One more LL related ramble,but this time just some of my overall thoughts on the new Liella girls separately and in general -

• Like most people,I did like the fact that Liella was only five members bc it was a new and fresh concept for Love Live but I feel like since the 12 member Niji thing got mixed reviews,they scrambled a little and decided to follow the nine member tradition

• And I don’t know why they decided to add them NOW instead of earlier,especially since we’ve already had so many songs,lives,SIF cards and also a whole anime season without these girls

• That being said though,I do think this was planned (just like how R3BIRTH was planned since 2018 supposedly don’t quote me on that I just read it somewhere) in a way,plus it makes sense since a big factor of Superstar is that the school is just opening up and new students are coming in so it’s not completely out of nowhere

• Also to piggyback off of that,I’ve seen this theory called the constellation theory and from what I understand of it,the original 5 represents the 5 points of a star (hence Superstar and the meaning of the name Liella) but 9 “stars” can make a constellation (again don’t quote me on that just roll with me). Plus each girl is a different zodiac sign,so we might be getting 3 more girls in the future with the remaining signs to complete the “constellation” and although that’s a cool theory that might be true idk if they’d do that

• Now I’m curious about who the seiyuus will be,since that is a large part of LL’s popularity (just look at how popular Aqours’ seiyuus are) and if we’ll get subunits now

• I’ve also seen a theory where we will actually see the original 5 grow up and we’ll get 3 seasons,and honestly?? That would be interesting I’m also interested in seeing how the original 5 will get along with these new girls

• Speaking of subunits,I 1000% think that this is why we haven’t gotten them yet. They were waiting for the group to be more “complete” but I’m excited to see them,and I also think that they were waiting to add them to All Stars because of this too

• From what I have gathered,Shiki is by FAR the most popular no doubt about it and imo it will probably stay that way I like her a lot too she’s a very unique character

• But for me though,Kinako and Mei will most likely be my favorites just based off of their designs and what little information we have so far

• Mei and Shiki are 110% in love,I have a strong feeling that they will be the most popular ship between these girls like Shiki LITERALLY says her favorite thing is Mei,they’re in the science team together,their hair and eyes are inverted of each other and they’re drawn together like come on they’re definitely setting it up

• This is less serious like the previous one,but I saw someone on Twitter say Natsumi is like if Mr. Krabs got reincarnated as an anime girl and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it cndjsj I also think Natsumi and Kinako are going to be a popular ship as well idk why just a feeling

• My personal predictions for their image colors and attributes : Kinako - Yellow,pure , Shiki - Gray / white,cool , Natsumi - Pink (but a different shade than Chisato’s) or maybe an aqua,either smile or cool and Mei - Red or purple,either cool or pure

That’s all I can think of,overall I’m hesitantly excited and curious to see what these girls will bring us in the future! Liella isn’t my favorite of the 4 groups,but I think this might mix things up for them and change my mind idk

Natsume Yuujinchou: “Cookies to the Forest’s Entrance” Summary (Chapter 105)

Our cuties are back with more adventures!

I was trying to get this out within a week of the chapter’s release, but life happened so it took a while. ;w; Anyways, this is our first chapter after the 4 month hiatus! Perhaps to serve as a breather after the super intense Homura arc, we have a relatively short chapter (only 24 pages compared to the usual 30-40 pages) about Natsume, Tanuma and Nyanko-sensei stumbling into an old house in the middle of the forest. In some ways, this chapter felt more like a special chapter rather than a main one (don’t expect any plot or character development for this one, especially not information on the grandpa), but surprisingly, it also helps wrap up some stuff in the Homura arc (firstly, DID NYANKO GET HIS COOKIES, secondly, our poor cinnamon roll pure boi needs a hug ;w;). It still gives me the usual NatsuYuu feels, so no complaints from me! Also (I’m sorry for plugging), but if you enjoy what we do, and don’t mind giving a couple of dollars,

Chapter 105: “Cookies to the Forest’s Entrance”

While walking home from school, Tanuma accidentally steps onto a cookie, hearing it crack under his foot. He spots another cookie in the distance, and begins finding more and more of them the further he looks.

Tanuma: (It leads into the forest.) // This is just like Hansel and Gretel. / I wonder who dropped these…

Tanuma: ! // Natsume? Natsume: Huh… // Tanuma!? / Why are you in a place like this? Tanuma: You too, Natsume, what are you doing here…

Tanuma asks if Natsume might have been the one to drop the cookies, but it turns out Natsume didn’t notice the cookies at all. After recognising the cookies, he runs off, following its trail. Tanuma runs after him as well. At the end of the trail, they find a little house.

Natsume: Ah. // In a place like this… / Is it a vacant house? Tanuma: Hey, Natsume… / Do you know what these cookies are? / You looked like you were looking for something.

Natsume: …It’s nothing big. / I guess you can say I was just curious… Tanuma: Curious? Natsume: ——These cookies are…

Natsume recounts what happened shortly after he and Nyanko-sensei returned from Homura. Touko and Shigeru were extremely glad that he was able to find Nyanko-sensei, and gave Nyanko-sensei the cookies that they had kept aside for him (if you remember at the start of the arc, Nyanko-sensei wanted some pretty cookies but ran off before Natsume went to buy them). Nyanko-sensei was super happy about them too. However, when Natsume returned home from school that day, Nyanko-sensei was nowhere to be found in his room. Thinking that Nyanko-sensei might have ran off to play as usual, and that he might be going beyond Yatsuhara…

Natsume: I couldn’t stop thinking about it, and I figured it would be interesting to try following Sensei at least once… Tanuma: … I see… Natsume: ...Don’t laugh. Tanuma: Haha, I’m sorry. / So, at the end of these cookies will be…

Yes, it is Nyanko-sensei.

Natsume: Found him! Tanuma: Fufu. / There’s a hole in his bag. / So that’s how the cookies fell out.

Tanuma: *sigh…* ……Natsume? Natsume: ——As I thought, I’m still a little worried about Sensei. Tanuma: Ah… / That’s right, at the White Mist Pottery* Village, he caught the eye of a strange Collector……

[*I’m gonna translate “Hakka Pottery” to “White Mist Pottery”, since I can pretty much confirm that ‘Hakka’ is not a family name lol. So, for localization sake, I am translating the whole term.]

Natsume: …There was someone who reassured me, saying, “I’ll take care of this incident, so you don’t have to worry.” // He isn’t someone who would say things without thinking, so I did think that things would be alright now. / But when I didn’t see Sensei around like this, I can’t help but feel anxious. // ...But I’m glad.

Natsume looks around.

Natsume: I guess he found this vacant house and has been idling around in it. / …Seriously, he even brought his favourite sake and sake bottle with him. Tanuma: Wow… // It doesn’t look like anyone is here, and it’s quite wide. Rather than a residence, this is more like… an arbor?

Tanuma: It’s old, / but it’s pretty. // It’s perfect as a hideaway / or as a secret base.

Natsume: A secret base… / Then we’ve done something bad, haven’t we? Since Sensei has been secretly having fun here… Nyanko: *open!* Hm hm. / Natsume and… the Tanuma brat. Natsume: Ah! Nyanko-sensei! // I’m sor- Nyanko: You came here with perfect timing. Help me out. Natsume: Huh!?

Nyanko-sensei explains that he discovered this place while chasing butterflies during his patrol. He figured that it would be the perfect place for him to take his afternoon naps, and was just in the midst of checking it out. The only issue is that the place is rather dusty, and Nyanko-sensei doesn’t have the spare time to clean the place up as he likes.

Nyanko: I’ve brought some dust cloths with me. / Just wet them in the river over there. Natsume: What— Nyanko: If we don’t at least clean this veranda, you two won’t be able to idle around either, right?

And just like that, the boys got to work.

Natsume: Geez~~~ *wipe wipe wipe wipe* // This house may be vacant, but it might have an owner, so don’t just do whatever you like, Sensei. Nyanko: Come on! / Put your backs into your wiping! Boys: Phew~~ // We’re finally doneee—

Completely exhausted, they plopped down onto the veranda, and had their rest. And as they closed their eyes—

Natsume: (What is this?) / (There’s some sort of sweet fragrance coming from somewhere.) // (Is it Sensei’s cookies?) / (No…) // (Maybe it’s flowers.) / (——It’s very) // (kind and sweet——)

Soon enough, Natsume notices that evening has already arrived, so they prepare to leave.

Nyanko: By the way, how did you two learn of this place? Natsume: How? Because your cookies had fallen out, Sensei. Nyanko: WHAT!? // *stunned* There’s a huge hole… Natsume: Shall we pick them up on our way home, Sensei?

Nyanko: …… / No, just leave them as they are. // We still have lots of maintenance to do. / Tomorrow, you two will follow this trail back to my afternoon napping spot. We will gather there.

[Did Nyanko just… sacrifice his cookies!? Omg!]

Natsume: “Maintenance”……? Tanuma: Haha, I’m sure birds would have eaten them by tomorrow, Sensei.

The following day, the two boys find the trail of cookies and arrive at the empty house.

Natsume: We’re here. Nyanko: You two are so slow! / You’re gonna be devoting yourselves to the maintenance of my drinking party spot! Natsume: Wasn’t this your afternoon napping spot? Tanuma: ——Huh? Natsume. / There’s something on the pillar there…

Indeed, on the pillar was a hand-written note, saying,

“Thank you for wiping the place. Please enjoy yourselves here.”

Natsume: Uwah! / It’s probably from the owner. (S- So embarrassing…) Tanuma: I wonder if it’s okay to just take advantage of their offer like that. / Even though we entered as we liked… Nyanko: Stop complaining! Today, we are wiping the sliding doors! / I want the moonlight and the evening sun to shine on it beautifully.

Natsume: …As an apology for Sensei coming in as he liked, we should at least clean the frame of the sliding doors. Tanume: Let’s do that. Natsume: You help too, Sensei. Nyanko: Hmph. / Just this should be enough, right?

Or so they thought.

Nyanko: *rip…*

Stunned by the tear, the two boys inspect the damage. Natsume asks if it can be fixed, and Tanuma figures that, if they bring some sliding door paper and glue tomorrow, it should do the trick. Natsume returns to the note on the pillar, and quickly jots down an apology.

“Sorry, we tore the sliding door. We will fix it tomorrow.”

Back at home, Natsume asks Shigeru for some sliding door paper.

Shigeru: ...Hm? Sliding door? Natsume: Yes… // Can I have enough for one grid? / We were staying at a place and we kind of… tore it. Shigeru: Oh. / Were you at the Tanuma’s? Natsume: Ah, no. Shigeru: It’s okay to be mischievous, but you have to keep it in moderation.

Shigeru: If it’s at home, you can break as many as you like, // but always make sure to apologize, alright, Takashi? Natsume: …… Yes.

[Shigeru is such a good papa ;w;]

As Natsume leaves the next day, Touko stops him, handing him some strawberries.

Touko: Here, give them these strawberries as an apology. // *rustle!* Do your best! Natsume: ——… // Thank you so much. Nyanko: Oh~~~ These strawberries look tasty~~~ Natsume: They are not for you, Sensei.

They continue to follow the trail of cookies (how have they not been eaten by animals yet??), during which Natsume asks if the owner might be there. Nyanko-sensei promptly answers that he doesn’t need to care so much about an uninhabited empty house.

Natsume: Don’t you start, Sensei. Tanuma: Oi, Natsume—

The three of them head to the house, and find that a new note has been attached to the pillar.

“Thank you for cleaning the sliding doors. I have a request. Could you help me plant these seeds in the garden?”

Natsume: Huh? // By ‘seeds’, do they mean this? // …They don’t sound angry. Tanuma: You fix the sliding door, Natsume. / I’ll clear the weeds over there and plant this. Natsume: Thank you, Tanuma.

Natsume: …… // (The owner of this house sure is strange…) // (Rather, it feels like…) // Hey… Nyanko-sensei…

Nyanko: HEY! / ENOUGH OF THAT! HURRY UP AND BRING OUT THE PAPER! // Let’s paste it down right away. It’s time to repair my afternoon napping spot! Natsume: ——… Yeah. // You’re right.

The three of them set down to work, and finally finished everything. Once again, exhausted, they plop onto the veranda and napped.

Natsume: (Nevertheless…) // (This is such a comfortable place——)

In his dreams, Natsume hears a man speak, and the thoughts of someone else…

Man: “——Hey there. Sorry to keep you waiting.” ??: ——It’s alright. // Always, / forever, // I will be here, waiting for you.

Natsume wakes up.

Note: As an apology, we have left some strawberries here. Tanuma: It’s quite a mysterious arbor. // It’s like we are exchanging letters with the house owner. Natsume: That’s true. Tanuma: ——Hey, Natsume. Natsume: Hm?

Tanuma: ...Nah. / See you tomorrow. Natsume: Yeah. // See you tomorrow.

And that night, Natsume had a dream.

Natsume: (There was a gentle-looking man sitting alone on top of the veranda.) / (And around him, perhaps it was the flowering season… There were so many colors as though it was overflowing with it.) Man: Ah, my beloved arbor. // I can only visit you once every year. / I can’t even maintain or take care of you. Please forgive this useless owner of yours. // This year, I’ve been busy with my family business as well. / The days where I come here provide emotional support, so I always look forward to it. // Ah, / the view here is so beautiful. // I built this here hoping that someday, / I could bring my wife, my children, and my family here to view this scenery. // But after so long, it has always just been me.

Man: I’m sorry. Even though I built you, // I’m always here alone. // I’m sorry I couldn’t make it lively. // ——Someday, // should // guests arrive here——

Natsume wakes up. The following day, he meets up with Tanuma again, and they follow the trail of cookies into the forest. Natsume wonders about all the strange things involving this situation, about the forest that was so close to his house and yet he doesn’t know much about it, about these cookies that still look great even after so long, and about the mysterious owner who never shows his face. And when they arrive at the arbor—

Flowers had bloomed across the garden.

Tanuma: What!? / Flowers!? // …This can’t all be / the seeds I planted yesterday…? // Just how did… Natsume: ——I’m guessing // this arbor made all of them bloom.

Tanuma: Huh… SFX: *rustle*

The one who wrote notes to thank them for cleaning the floor and the sliding doors might have been the arbor itself. With its memories of bygone days, it’s always been here inside the forest, waiting.

Natsume: You finally have guests coming here. / But I’m sorry that it was us.

This was such an old, old little arbor, and it felt as though it was mustering the last of its power to show them this scenery.

Nyanko: Ooh, there are strawberry flowers here too. Natsume: Tanuma. / Why don’t we take a seat at the veranda and look at this scenery for a bit? Tanuma: Huh? Natsume: Somehow, / I feel like we won’t be able to come here again tomorrow.

Tanuma: ———……… // I see——… Natsume: (——I wonder if there are buildings that can become ayakashi too.)

That was the mysterious arbor that Nyanko-sensei found. It was only a short while, but it was where two people, one beast, and another certain someone, had spent their time together. As they take a seat on the veranda, Natsume recalls the words that the owner had said in his dream.

Man: ——Someday, // should guests arrive here…

Man: Make sure to welcome them with lots of flowers, alright?

It was a beautiful and lovely, secret arbor.

Top 9 Nijigasaki Girls

Hell yeah baby, we’re doing one of these! Now obviously it’s news to nobody that Shioriko’s now in the group in JP so I could include her, but eh I’m only really familiar with her from EN where she’s not got loads going on just yet. I could technically include Yu as well since the title is just Nijigasaki Girls rather than Nijigasaki Idols but we’re ignoring her too. This is just my top 9 favourite of Nijigasaki’s normal idol members we’re all very familiar with. These rankings are based pretty much exclusively off of SIFAS’ EN server where I’ve read the entire main story and every bond episode so far, plus a good chunk of the side stories for individual cards, so I feel like I’ve got a solid enough idea of who each girl is to where I can make this list, right? Yeah. Also just as a fun aside, the picture I use for each girl is my favourite SIFAS card of theirs currently on the EN server also, since I thought that’d be a fun thing to do. Anyway that’s all my introductory text, let’s fuckin start.

9. Shizuku Osaka

Oh look at me, I’m Shizuku, I’m an actress, every single time I speak I always make it about how I do acting. My sole defining character trait is that I do acting. Yeah nah Shizuku doesn’t really do a lot for me. She has a really pretty design, sure, cute voice and good solo songs too, and like I know she has a bit more to her than being an actress, but it rarely feels like that’s come up so far, that one character trait is so pervasive that it’s hard to really think of anything else she is.

8. Emma Verde

Emma is a girl who I struggle to really find much to say about. She’s from Switzerland, and she’s a big sister, and I feel like those two end up being a good bit of what her character is, beyond the usual “nice” and “likes school idols” thing that kinda applies to most everyone anyway. She’s probably got my least favourite design of all the Niji girls even. She really just doesn’t do anything for me. But I mean, Shizuku’s acting focus can sometimes get annoying, whereas Emma’s never really annoying, so that’s why she’s not bottom.

7. Kanata Konoe

Oh look at me, I’m Kanata, I love sleeping and I’m a siscon. Kanata is a character that can get pretty tiring (HA) since she’s generally always talking about those same two things, but I actually put her above Shizuku and Emma because she has some pretty solid banter whenever she’s out to be snarky, which is fairly often, and also I like her design and especially her voice more, Akari Kito’s great.

6. Ayumu Uehara

Ayumu’s an interesting one. She’s the protagonist of a Love Live thing, the next Honoka if you will, but she’s not really anything like Honoka or Chika. She has an IQ above 80 for a start, and she’s a fair bit, I guess slower and less passionate about school idols than those two as well. And I do appreciate that change of pace, for what it’s worth. But Ayumu’s another girl where she doesn’t really do a whole lot for me. She’s nice, she wants to take one step at a time being a school idol or whatever, and she’s Yu’s childhood friend and is the most openly in love with her aside from maybe Kasumi. And she’s not much else. Unless you go to the fuckin Famitsu 4-koma baby!!! Ayumu has a snake called Sasuke and that fact alone fuckin carries her dude. Also I mean I really love her design and her voice is adorable and her solo songs are really nice and I mean Ayumu in general doesn’t really feel like there’s a lot to her but she is honestly really likeable anyway.

5. Kasumi Nakasu

Contemplated putting Nico Yazawa since they’re the same fucking character! Except oh wait Nico has depth and development. Okay so the thing about Kasumi is that I literally can’t convince myself she’s anything other than a discount Nico, with the only major difference being that she’s a 1st year rather than a 3rd year that looks like a 1st year, and also she’s even more pathetic than Nico is. Like, what else actually is there to her? I don’t even fuckin know dude, I really don’t. However – Nico’s already so amazing that if you’re a discount Nico that still shoots you up the list a lot – there are worse girls to be clones of. Kasumi also has the benefit of a great voice, great solo songs, and uh, uhm, yeah. She’s just a complete shitter and I bet she’s a plussy too. Idk, I like Kasumi.

4. Rina Tennoji

We’re at last at the point of the list where I just really adore every single character, and yo, I really adore Rina. Is Rina-chan board a dumb and unrealistic gimmick? Yeah. Is her saying “Rina-chan board says x” kind of annoying? Yeah. Is everything else about her perfect? Uh, fucking yeah! Rina’s cute, she’s got a great voice, the Rina-chan board may be a dumb and unrealistic gimmick but it’s also really cute and endearing and does a lot to differentiate her from the rest of the girls, I like her music a lot, she’s got a great design, her side stories are fun as hell, I love her fucking cat, I love her friendship with Ai, I just love like everything about Rina she’s a perfect mega cute angel.

3. Karin Asaka

Like I said, I adore everyone from this point forwards, and yeah Karin’s no exception. The cool and sexy Karin being this directionless idiot with such mature hobbies who also completely loses her shit when she sees a panda or something, it’s all wonderful. And I think she’s got a fair bit of depth compared to some of the others as well. Particularly in her side stories you see that that cool and sexy aura she has, that reputation she’s been upholding, it’s not really who she fully is. And I can appreciate that, anything that gives more to a character than just who they are on the surface is usually great, particularly with the Niji girls where we have like 3 girls defined by single character traits. Also her songs are fucking incredible, I’d put them as the second best set of all the solos so far, it’ll be obvious who number 1 is. Karin’s just great, and an unexpectedly well written character given how easy it would be to just make the cool and sexy character exactly that. Also though yeah she’s cool and sexy, her design captured those two elements really well and she’s got one of the best designs of this cast.

2. Ai Miyashita

I love Ai. Ai love I. I ai Ai. I love Love. Ai ai Ai. Ai-san aishiteru. I’m running out of boring unfunny jokes to make that nobody appreciates, not even myself. Anyway Ai’s great, she’s not really got as much depth as Karin and in fact she’s sorta that exact “single character trait” thing I was just talking about, but Ai’s single character trait is that she’s the most infectiously positive and humorous and friendly girl ever. Ai basically exists to just be the most extroverted people-person there ever was, capable of befriending everyone and spreading her cheer with the world. And that’s a type of character I’m finding more appealing these days, which is always great. And her energy is captured really well with her design, voice and especially her songs as well, Yuu & Ai and Meccha Going are both absolutely infectious bangers that are fun as fuck to listen to and then the DiverDiva songs both slap as well, forgot to say that with Karin but it applies here so. Ai’s just a really delightful character, also I love that she gets so many different hairstyles, that’s always a good thing for a Love Live girl to do.

1. Setsuna Yuki

Haha woah there’s a surprise, Setsuna’s number 1. And it’s her birthday no less! Happy birthday Setsuna. She’s not number 1 because it’s her birthday or anything, I just felt like if I’m making this list anyway then the fact that Setsuna’s number 1 is a good excuse to post it on her birthday. Anyway yeah, Setsuna. The absolute fucking weeaboo queen who named herself after two light novel characters. I love that a lot. She’s got an incredible design, I love her colour scheme so fucking much, Tomori Kusonoki’s voice is absolutely amazing for her, her songs are bar none the best solo songs with Niji, she’s got actual character development and like an arc across the main story and development in her bond stories and her side stories are also always fun as hell, she’s so passionate and enthusiastic about her hobbies and every time she talks about anything it makes me wish I could talk about them with her, she’s just incredible. Also because she’s Nana Nakagawa, Setsuna gets to be a glasses waifu as well, which we desperately need more of and I really hope the Niji anime lets her wear glasses a lot because Hanayo had hers removed too often, same with Hanamaru. Setsuna just makes me happy, plain and simple. I love her a lot. Everyone pray that I pull Fes Setsuna one day, it’s the only thing I want.

And that’s us. Might make a version 2 of this list in the future, maybe after their anime airs since that could change the list about a fair bit. I certainly don’t expect Setsuna in number 1 to change anytime soon though. Happy birthday girl.

There were a total of five OSTs released for Gundam Wing (the fifth was dedicated to the music of Endless Waltz, which will not be covered in this post or this playlist). Caitlin asked if I (Cathy) would create a playlist of my favorites. I didn't think she expected I would also write a novel. But here we go.

Let’s listen to some of the music of Gundam Wing!

(All song titles will be described with their English name and also the strangely romanized Spotify name.)

There are three main categories of Gundam Wing OST songs: (1) shoot 'em up fighting tracks which usually feature loud riffs, drums, and blats and blares coming at you at the same speed and frequency of mobile suits firing pointlessly at the Gundams, (2) instrumental, orchestral songs meant for the intermission period of a ballet that was never written or performed, or (3) synthy stuff with saxophones that wouldn't be out of place in a dingy rainy bar scene of a tame movie from the 80s. Most of the really recognizable tracks are in the first OST. OST 2 tends towards less interesting instrumental waltz-like stuff, Sanq Kingdom ballroom music as I've termed it in my head. They're fine, tolerable pieces of music, but you don't hear them and instantly think "Gundam Wing." By the time you get to OST 3, you're digging into the really deep cuts of Gundam Wing OST tracks, some of which I don't remember being in the show at all. (OST 4 is almost entirely character songs.)

We open with two of the best OPs—nay, songs—to have ever been made, "Just Communication" and "Rhythm Emotion," both by TWO-MIX. "Rhythm Emotion" was not, as you may have imagined, a mid-season swap-out. It was only used for about 10 episodes, and you may have even forgotten what it sounded like until just this moment, but "Rhythm Emotion" is no slacker. With alien, wintery synths that make you feel like you're soaring through the sky and between enemy mobile suits, this is one of those songs you would hear heavily remixed for knock-off DDR machines in arcades for years to come. The breakdown is cheesy, overemotional, and yet gives me the same goosebumps I would feel, years later, when listening to Love Live's "Snow Halation." Its more accomplished older sister, "Just Communication," dates itself from its opening note, but it owns its place in time and history unapologetically. Timeless, instantly recognizable, and eminently singable, you could, as Caitlin says in Episode 1, play this in a karaoke room full of randos and you're guaranteed to have someone scream along. There are some songs that make everyone feel like the star of their own shounen anime when they hear it, and "Just Communication" is one of them. Turning it up full volume in your car is like blasting "Take My Breath Away" while speeding on a motorcycle with a leather jacket. You are invincible through all 4:20 minutes of this song.

After that, perhaps one of the most famous instrumental tracks from the series: "The Wings of a Boy that Killed Adolescence / Shisyunki wo Koroshita Syonen no Tsubasa." (That boy is Heero Yuy. I know you know that, but this OST makes it explicit with its last instrumental track, "Code Name Heero Yuy," which is just another version of this melody.) There are a lot of songs like this, fighting tracks that hurry along at a clip, heroic but a little bit anxious ("When the Dragon Swims / Ryu ga Oyogutoki...," "Break Out," "Scattering Left Light / Kakusansuru Zanko" which barely sounds like music and is clearly hoping to be the soundtrack to your next laser tag game). I want to call out among them "Mission Accomplished / Ninmu Suiko," which has a last half that is so tied in my head to the world of Gundam Wing that when I hear it, I am instantly transported. It's almost a letdown that it's just an OST track, because it builds up such amazing tension that it releases just as quickly. "Mission Accomplished" is a bridge between these energetic tracks and more headbang-y, hard metal type fight songs like "Use the Cloak of Darkness / Kurayami Karano Tsukai," one of my all-time favorite guitar riffs from the GW OSTs. A lot of OST 1 is full of this "Enter Sandman" type stuff, though you still get reprises in the later OSTs, like "Well-Planned Tactics / Butsuryo Sakusen." The back half of "Cloak of Darkness," though, is a completely different track, this time pure fascist military fantasy. A lot of OSTs were like this, two short BGMs together masquerading as a one- to two-minute track. I'm not sure if it was just more expensive to list out a bunch of 45 second tracks, or if Otani Kou just ran out of emo names for all of them.

One thing I didn’t realize until this project is that there are no less than five variations on Relena’s theme in OST 1 alone:

To Beauty, to Elegance, and to Noble-mindedness / Karen ni Yuga ni...

As Relena Peacecraft / Relena Peacecraft Toshite

When you've heard one, you've heard them all, so I’m putting on "Soft Hair...,” the wonderfully 80s and slightly boozy "adult contemporary" version of it, completely with a Kenny G sax. The others feel much more pure and dignified, especially "To Beauty...," which I think of as "waltz music" as it shows up in many of the early series' ballroom scenes. ”Rainbow Bridge..." is a worthy remix/variant, and for another similar boozy 80s feel, also try "Coolheaded Bloodthirstiness / Reitetsu na sakki" from OST 1. While I’ve left most of this playlist in chronological album order, I’ve moved up "I Believed We'd Meet / Kanarazu Aeruto Shinji” from OST 3. This track is not particularly noteworthy to me, but I leave it here as an example of how even later in the series, Otani Kou makes references to this refrain, even if it's not played note for note.

Because like any good soundtrack, Gundam Wing reuses themes and motifs. "Searching for Peace Buried Amid the Corpses / Shikabane ni Umoreta..." and "That Clown Doesn't Need Make Up for Tears / Sono Doukeshi..." share the same melody, only one is a fighting song and another is a mourning song. I actually like the rendition in "Hourglass of a Sad Color / Kanashimi-iro no Sunadokei" (also from OST1) better, but while "Hourglass" is a straightforward BGM track, "That Clown..." shows off one of the more interesting aspects of the Gundam Wing OSTs: its frequent blending of synths, cheesy sax, and more classic orchestral strings. You can hear it in second half of "That Clown...", but also in tracks like "Unknown Pressure / Michi no Pressure," or OST 3's " Behind The Scenes of The Blackout / Anten no Butaiura de," which is a typical "woe is me" orchestral track that is for some reason constantly interrupted by digital "beep boop" mumblings. Without that blend, you're left with a lot of grave-sounding tracks with bombastic Phantom of the Opera-worthy brass sections, like "Soldiers Who Don't Have a Gravepost / Bhyounaki Senshitachi" or "Legend of Zero / Zero no Densetsu." Not that those songs are bad, which is why I include the last of the instrumental tracks from OST 3: "Who Will Give Their Life / Darega Tameni Inochi," which takes itself very seriously and very earnestly, just like the show itself.

One of the other frequent moods of these OST is anxiety, perhaps no better demonstrated than "You Can Hear a Voice Calling the Soul /Tamashii wo Yobu Koe ga Suru", which has a guitar emitting screeches of existential despair. “Signs of Consciousness / Ishiki no Taido" is from this same school, but its second half is more "I am walking into a rave already a few minutes into what I know is going to be a bad trip," which is not really a mood I remember from the series itself. By the time you get to OST 3, you start venturing into tracks that wouldn't be out of place in a horror film. You can hear an example of it in "The Eyes of a Mobile Doll / Mobile Doll no Me," which is on this list because it sounds like a fever dream, but you could also check out "The Abandoned Horse of the Age / Jidai no Sutegoma," which is not on this playlist and has the same effect. Some of them, like "I Don't Like Fairytales / Otogi-banashi wa Sukijyanai," are inspiringly atmospheric, almost hypnotic. Is Gundam Wing horror? [Treize Voice] Yes, the Horror of War.

Some quick call-outs in the odds and ends group: “Tokimeite Harmony” is the 3x4 theme, a literal duet between a violin and a flute, and it’s there for that reason and that reason alone. I could not tell you for the life of me where in the series “Yasuragi no Hitotoki...”, “Kizuna,” “Sonzai Syomei,” or “Kioku no Gyakuryu” come from, but they sound like beautiful tracks from a video game I’ve never played. Similarly, “That Day Was The Last Day I Saw Your Smile / Anohi Saigo ni Mita Egao” is uncharacteristically fluttery and beautiful for a Gundam Wing OST piece, an almost Ghibli-esque track which nevertheless ends on an anxiety-inducing note of unrest.

And finally, the character songs. I leave you with one for each of the six main characters, and then a bonus.

Heero Yuy: "With Only My Words / Oredake no Kotoba de." Did you expect Heero's singing voice to sound like this? Neither did I. I have no idea why they thought this was a good image song for Heero. It's not. I leave it here because you must listen to it. The better "sounding" song is "Flying Away," which shows up in this CD later, but it doesn't give me the same dissonance as this one.

Duo Maxwell: “Wild Wing.” "Good Luck & Good Bye" is the superior song. (there's a little bit of Wang Chung “Everybody Have Fun Tonight" to it), but the sheer hilarity of this chorus (WILD WING BOYS!) means that i have to include it.

Trowa Barton: “Clown / Doukeshi.” What to say about this? This is a typical ballad, something you may play during a romantic moment of a kdrama or during the slow motion death scene in a Hong Kong film that would be released around the same time as GW was. I feel bad for Nakahara Shigeru who clearly is straining himself singing this. but it is nothing if not period accurate.

Quatre Raberba Winner: “Star’s Gaze / Hoshi no Manazashi.” Poor Orikasa Ai. Quatre’s voice is passably bishounen in the series itself, but it's hard to hide that his seiyuu was a woman when it came to the image songs. That said, her voice has a much fuller quality than her fellow pilots, and this is actually a decent-enough filler song. You could imagine debuting an idol maybe in the late 80s with this track.

Chang Wufei: “Knock at Tomorrow's Door / Asu eno Door wo Tatake.” If Wing were a kpop group, Wufei would be the rapper. You don't get to argue with me here. It's hard enough to imagine Wufei actually singing, but Ishino Ryuzou's singing voice also doesn't bear that much resemblance to the voice he adopted for the character. 

Relena Peacecraft: “Love is Not Crying Yet / Ai wa Mada Nakanai.” One of the most unexpected of the image songs is this bossa nova inspired track for Relena. Like Orikasa's ballad, this song almost works as a real song, and the purity of Yajima Akiko's voice is incredibly charming, which makes it all that more surprising that she's actually best known for being the seiyuu to the eponymous Shin-chan of Crayon Shin-Chan.

I do not include the image songs for Zechs and Treize, simply because they're boring. Both of them are extremely well-known and popular seiyuus, who have since done a number of musical projects. You can tell that they will fare better at that endeavor than Trowa’s seiyuu, but there's really nothing interesting to say about their songs. As always, the men of Gundam Wing are shown up by their female counterpart: Lady Une's "Brightness & Darkness" is positively anthemic and fun to listen to. Sayuri doesn't hit all the notes perfectly, and you can sense there is Fleetwood Mac / Stevie Nicks impersonator out there who could really knock this one out of the park, but if I were to keep one image song out of the whole bunch, it'd be this one.

FINALLY!! i am all caught up with the manga!! there are only 123 chapters translated from what i’ve seen, and i understand that the translation group stopped doing translations a year ago??

the official yen press translations are about 20 chapters behind the current available translations (however, volume 10 of the yen press edition comes out in may! volume 10 is japanese volumes 19 and 20).

moving on (i’m not gonna mark spoilers since this has been out for a year but, if you’re actively reading the manga and don’t wanna know what happens, then ignore everything below this):

i’ve learned so much!! i was on and off with this manga for years, but i’m so glad i took this month to get back into it! i wouldn’t say there’s a lot happening, but i am liking what’s happening so far, and i feel that it’s well-paced! mikanagi-san has been doing great with pacing, i think.

learning more about yogi was great! and his sub-plot seems done, at least for the time being. there are definitely two points in yogi’s character that i can see being expanded, if the story calls for it - where silver!yogi has gone (if he’s gone anywhere or has he been fully integrated with yogi? - i don’t think the manga made this super clear); and what experiments he underwent with kafka and with circus (more trauma yay!). and i wonder if yogi’s sister will play a role in the future? her story seemed pretty straightforward, but who knows.

learning about nai has been great! who would’ve thought he was part karoku’s father!? i was absolutely stunned to read that haha. admittedly, it really is amazing what karoku’s mother was able to do in a wooden cabin, but that’s absolutely thanks to all the practice she had with splicing at kafka.

i’m super soft-hearted about nai and karoku being true, real friends! karoku was only experimented on and knew nothing outside of the lab, and nai was just a super cute niji who tried to protect little bunnies from being eaten. they came together - karoku having a purpose to save/heal nai and nai being super interested in karoku - and they were there for each other! karoku, i think, absolutely needed something to take care of and something that wasn’t linked back to kafka and experimentation. sad, though, that his mother experimented on nai because “he wasn’t important” but i’m really glad that karoku saved nai and taught him how to speak and walk! they’re truly family and that makes me happy.

however!!! karoku is still a mystery to me. i’ve, finally, (hopefully) deduced that kafka cloned karoku and that’s why kafka has their own karoku. i’m curious if kafka!karoku has hit the next level of evolution that they wanted from the original!karoku (before his parents took him and ran away). it seems like it given that he attacked te third ship. but we’ll see!

i’m also eager to see how gareki shapes up as a combat medic! i’m super proud of him for accepting that position, and for wanting to stick to it! he hasn’t really been able to do much in regards to his unique and specific position, but the manga seems like it was gonna pick back up on that, so i hope it actually did.

also! tsubame and... her brother that i immediately forget the name of! how interesting!!! tokitatsu is such an interesting character and i wish we saw more of him! what’s his purpose for keeping yokata (ha i remembered!) in the dark about him having a sister? i understand making sure that yokata (wait actually is that his name?) completely loyal to him and him alone... hm, that’s probably why, but, tokitatsu, i’m sure, has another motivation behind that, especially since, arguably, everyone under circus (minus research) is technically loyal to him. so i’m curious to his thought process on that front!

+on more light-hearted notes!

i’m glad that yogi has reconciled a lot of his memories! and hirato dressed as a prince is truly heavenly!! he looked so good honestly. i love seeing panels of nai sleeping because he’s truly adorable(tm).

aaahh, i wish we saw nai and karoku interacting more! i feel like i hadn’t seen karoku in ages before the last few chapters. and i want more nai+gareki interaction because i love seeing these two dorks interact haha.

also! akari, for all his meanness, actually trusts circus to do thier jobs - he trust hirato and tsukitachi even though he has high blood pressure about them. this is exactly the type of info i like to know haha.

+this has gotten quite long, so i’ll wrap this up.

i hope that yen press can put out vol11 (japanese vol21-22) this year as well! that would be where the translations end (minus three chapters). i just don’t want them to do another three year gap between volumes haha.

i hope that someone is able to pick up the translation, but if not, i have no problem waiting for the yen press releases! they’re, admittedly, not that far behind japan.

ah, i’m so tempted to write a fic for karneval, but, as always, what exactly? who knows, but i’ll definitely think about it!

Dumb men (I was going to say ‘straight, white, cis, American’ men but realised I’ve seen other types of men also being equally idiotic, SO I GUESS JUST MEN) being deleted from all youtube comments please. Also maybe shut down tumblr. I think we’d all benefit from that tbh. Also while I’m at it, can we have a game similar to Pokemon GO but instead of catching Pokemon you catch hot anime bishies. Get exercise and also get five thousand hot boyfriends :D Also retaining the nickname feature. Because that’ll be entertaining. 

3. What’s your favorite word and why? I’ve always been fond of kerfuffle. It just sounds so cute and happy. A kawaii way to say you fucked someone’s shit up. Petrichor is also a DAMN FINE word. It sounds satisfying and the meaning is EVEN MORE SATISFYING. 

4. Hot chocolate with milk or with water? Toppings? Marshmallows? It tastes better with milk, but as I at times have more than 3 a day (since I don’t drink coffee and need caffeine), if I plan to have more than 2 I will make them with water. I believe I have already stated my opinion on marshmallows as well lmao. 

5. If you could change one thing about your favorite fandom, what would it be? Tbh delete all appreciation for my absolute NOTP. And no, I don’t actually mean Akashi/Furihata like most other Akashi/Kuroko shippers; I occasionally state I don’t particularly care for that ship, but I tend to just ignore it and its existence for the most part. Whereas my actual ‘I FUCKING HATE THIS’ ship, NOPE I WANT THAT OBLITERATED> DELETE ITS EXISTENCE. WIPE IT CLEAN OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH. This can also be said to apply to one particular person in said ‘FUCK NO’ NOTP. I have frequently expressed my disdain for this character, I do not make it a secret, so it should be no leap to assume who, and which ship, I’m talking about here. 

6. You now have the ability to permanently alter one character from any fandom. Who do you pick, and what do you change? -Lmao. Okay. Well, I’ll name some names after all then, shall I?  -Can I just. Completely erase Momoi’s existence from KnB entirely? Jfc I cannot fucking stand her one bit. The only redeeming quality of her very 2D, bland, and at times downright offensive character, is her desire for the GoM to be friends again. And I could live without that somewhat nice sentiment if it meant the remaining 99.9% of her shittiness was gone. I will never like her. -I can occasionally stand her in fanfiction if she does’t have a major appearance, and also if she’s not being monumentally annoying. And even then I don’t feel any issues with killing her off due to dislike of her canon characterisation. I could literally care less what happens to her. Harsh, maybe, but I personally feel she brings nothing of value to this series, and tbh it would be far better, and certainly less cringey, without her.  -I have essentially been awake for 3 days so this is probably said with much less delicacy than I would normally use, though regardless of insomnia-induced aggression levels, the base feeling is the same. 

7. What is your philosophy on life? (Is it pointless, is it meaningful, is it what you make it, etc…) I honestly don’t care about things such as ‘the meaning of life’. We’re never going to know who put us here, if anything did, or what we’re meant to do, if there is anything, or why we are here at all. Just do whatever you want. Everyone’s going to die and the sun will turn into a black hole and swallow the earth and the universe will ultimately end in a rather unpleasant manner anyway. As long as you’re not harming anyone’s way of life, do what ever you want I could care less.  (that got kinda dark... I guess that’s what happens when people ask philosophical questions)

8. Would you consider getting a tattoo? If you would, what would it be and where would you put it? -Well the first tattoo I ever planned on getting (decided upon when I was 15), and the one I still want to be my first, is my recently passed dog’s pawprint tattooed on my left wrist; where I used to frequently self harm. The original idea was to get a tattoo of something meaningful there that would remind me every time I went to hurt myself that there’s still reasons for living. I stopped self harming around the same time my dog died in 2015, and even though I didn’t really need the reminder to not hurt myself in that way, I decided that getting his pawprint (which I was given a print of when he passed) would be especially nice, and would serve as a reminder of things I survived, and should I ever need a reminder in the future. My plan is now to get his paw on my left wrist (where the majority of damage was done, as he was my first pet), and when my cat also passes (hopefully not for a while still), I will get her pawprint on my right wrist.  -In less meaningful directions, I’ve also wanted the Grey Warden’s emblem tattooed on me for the longest time. I’m thinking thigh in terms of placement. idek what it is about them, or about the DA series in general. I mean, being a Grey Warden is arguably (is it tho) kind of a shitty thing?? You don’t really want to aspire to that if you enjoy, idk, LIFE? But their tagline of ‘In war, Victory; In Peace, Vigilance; In Death, Sacrifice’ IDK BUT IT JUST GOT ME.

9. What’s your favorite headcanon? (Could be your own or someone else’s) Shit, I have A LOT. *These are all mine as well! (mostly lol) -One that I’m still fond of is the hc that Kuroko becomes sleepy after eating a lot (particularly sugary things) which is one reason he eats quite lightly, and that the GoM during Teikou would always be attempting to overfeed him because they thought it was adorable when he curled up in their laps and went to sleep.  -Another I came up with is Akashi not being allowed to play videogames (and probably also not watch much TV) after his mother died. Thus, the GoM (and later Rakuzan regulars, YES YOU TOO MAYU WITH UR LOVE LIVE RHYTHM GAMES) would bring in their DSs and PSPs to school to let him play them as a much needed break from all the pressure being put on him.  -Ideas conceived with 6ubblegum earlier such as Masaomi actually having an unrequited interest in Kuroko’s dad when they were younger, and obviously him becoming quite upset when Kuroko’s dad married Kuroko’s mother. We also came up with the idea that Masaomi and Shiori’s marriage was arranged by their parents for mutual family benefits and that the pair never cared much for each other, and also that Shiori was aro (also I angstily suggested ‘imagine her crying under her veil as she walked down the aisle tho’). Then I also suggested the idea of what if Shiori and Kuroko’s mother were friends, going on playdates with their sons (and also the humorous idea of them putting baby Akashi+Kuroko in matching dresses). So in the end, Masaomi has never been much interested in his own son, and the only person who cared about Akashi truly was his mother, who is now gone. Also Masaomi becoming understandably VERY opposed when Akashi begins dating Kuroko in school.  -Anything involving mentally ill GoM + others (though a chunk of these aren’t even headcanons and more: I am 100% convinced these characters actually have these conditions). Especially fond of self-harmer Akashi.  -Also literally any hc where any particular character is either aro, ace, or both. I reeaaaally love ace Kise actually.  -AGENDER REO!!!!! -I’ll end it with a somewhat nsfw one. The shameless guilty pleasure with 6ubble of Kise and Kuroko being known as the sluts of the Teikou. They’ve definitely boned all the regulars (including NIji) at least once. Probably more. definitely more

10. Do humans have souls? Do animals? I’ve been awake far too long for these kinds of questions XD UHHH in my personal belief I’ve always maintained the idea that all living creatures (this includes humans, as humans are primates) have a sort of.. living energy?? My belief is that once a creature dies, of its lifeforce/energy/soul/the magic keeping it alive/whatever you fancy calling it, the personality part (which I would say comes from the brain and is made up of memories and of course the individual’s unique personality) goes to a plane with other deceased energies (suppose you could call this heaven of a sort - tbh I always pictured it as kinda like the pyreflies in FFX), while the rest of the energy (which I would say comes from the heart and is, I guess, the emotions the individual has experienced through life) is recycled and returned to the earth to be used again. SOOO a sort of somewhat logical theory that combines both afterlife and reincarnation. I also think that the recycled energies can recognise other energies they knew in previous lives. Not in a literal sense, but more like, they might feel an inexplicable connection, be it between two people, a pet and a human, etc etc. I kinda like the idea of this also explaining real life cases of supposed ‘soulmates’. Two energies meeting that once knew each other and were compatible in a previous life (sounds really YA romance I know). This could also be potentially used to explain some conditions or mental illnesses. Recycled energy that previously had lots of negative experiences may be renewed as someone who is also troubled (blame ur disorders on your energy ancestors lmao). This could explain troubled people who have no family history of any similar experiences. IT ALL SOUNDS VERY FANTASTICAL BUT YE. This has all come together after years of viewing and researching many different spiritual beliefs and recounts of spiritual or other ‘incredible’ events, in an attempt to kind of merge everything into something that could potentially be real and/or believable. Idk if scientifically this would make any sense, but I feel it’s logical enough to suit me anyways. 

11. What’s your favorite holiday and why? Well I have mentioned I’m pagan before, sooooo, my answer to this will probably be weird? XD LONG AND BORING BACKSTORY TIME: I didn’t really become self identified as pagan until the age of 13-14, and before that I grew up typically celebrating Christian holidays (Easter, Christmas) despite my immediate family not being religious at all. I always saw these holidays as more just time to be with family than anything else. So I do still celebrate Easter and Christmas as I’ve grown up with them in a culture that celebrates them whether you’re religious or not. I guess Christmas was always my favourite? It’s roughly a month after my birthday, far enough that I get double presents, but close enough that there’s still lots of ongoing excitement. And growing up it was typically the only time each side of my family would all be together (we’d alternate, one year at my mum’s parents, the next at my dad’s). But as I’ve gotten older, and grandparents have died and families have drifted apart, I’ve become less interested in both Easter and Christmas, seeing them now more as just times to buy stuff for people when you really can’t afford to, and tbh now I find myself more drawn to things such as Samhain (also ref that if you have seen spn, they butchered the pronunciation. it’s more akin to ‘sah-ween’ it’s an Irish word I think, which explains everything tbh) in particular. Before last year I had never sought out other pagans in my area and thus was a bit lax in my celebration of sabbats, so when I actually started meeting up with other people in my city early last year, it actually really changed things for me (so emotional sobsob). The Samhain I celebrated with this group earlier in the year (as I’m in the southern hemisphere, Samhain for me is in May) was actually a really really special thing that I did. It also happened to coincide around the 2 year anniversary of my dog’s death, and as Samhain (which has become modern Halloween to most) is a day for celebrating loved ones who have died, it was just a really nice experience to think about my dog, as well as my grandmother who died 3 months before him.  THAT WAS A LONG, BORING, AND MUSHY WAY OF SAYING THAT BASICALLY: ‘pagan Halloween’ (tho that term doesn’t even make sense lmao) is actually really lovely and memorable compared to almost every other ‘traditional’ holiday of my life.
