David and the Elves (2021)
Tumblr media
I didn’t mean to pick a movie entirely in Polish to start the 2023 season, but it’s for sure an interesting one. Warning- I watched this on Netflix with English subtitles, but there was a background narration voice that wasn’t subtitled. I don’t know how much I missed, and I never will.
Elf Albert (Jakub Zajac) has been the top elf at the North Pole for 5 years in a row. With the help of his close friend Elf Erwin (Piotr Rogucki), Albert tries to stay on top of his declining levels of Christmas spirit. That’s where an elf’s power comes from, so if they lose it, they shrink until they vanish altogether. Albert is convinced that the solution is to get humans to love him more. Santa Claus (Cezary Zak) tells Albert that humans don’t know who he is and that humans aren’t as understanding about elves. Albert leaves anyway. Erwin tells Santa, so Santa and Mrs. Claus (Monika Krzywkowska) can keep an eye on him and help if he needs.
Albert lands in the street in front of a kid named David (Cyprus’s Grabowski). I’m not sure how old David is supposed to be, but younger than 10 seems likely. David believes in the magic of Christmas and loves Albert, but that’s not enough to help Albert. Albert causes mayhem with David’s dad, Piotr (Michal Czernecki), by making his fake beard real and with David’s mom, Hania (Anna Smolowik) by turning the Christmas tree into a life size Albert statue.
This movie is chaotic and has multiple characters having existential crises but, like, festively, so I’m into it. There’s also a moment at the end that’s really cool, but would be a little homoerotic in an American movie. I probably wouldn’t watch it again, but it was fun the one time. Any time I noticed music, it was cringey. Having no frame of reference for Polish acting, the acting was good. Santa and Mrs. Claus were a little weird, but that seemed intentional. Overall, 3 stars.

David and the Elves (2021)
My rating: 5/10
I mean, it's not the worst Eastern European Christmas movie I've seen on Netflix recently...
But seriously, while this isn't great, as such, with poor pacing and way too many shenanigans, it manages to get pretty close to a satisfying ending, and the whole "Christmas isn't about the trappings, it's about being with people you love" message is downright Seussian. It's fine.

NHL Expansion Draft 2021: Full list of players available for Seattle Kraken
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The NHL announced the protected lists for the 30 teams involved in the NHL Expansion Draft. (Vegas is exempt.) With the names of those protected come the guys who could be snatched up by the Seattle Kraken. There are a number of big names that have everyone trying to figure out just what general manager Ron Francis will do. Will he take Canadiens netminder, and future Hall of Famer, Carey Price and his hefty cap hit? Is Vladimir Tarasenko the sniper he needs or is his health a big question mark? There's also a number of guys who would fit in nicely but are free agents and the chances of signing them are not high (i.e. Alex Ovechkin).  EXPANSION DRAFT: Date, time, rules & more for Seattle Kraken team selectionRegardless of what Francis, coach Dave Hakstrol and Co. end up doing, there's a good chance the Kraken will be a playoff contender in just their first season. For now, let the intrigue and the guessing WWRFD (that's: what will Ron Francis do?) begin. Here's a look at every player they can pick.

Ramblings: Thoughts on Dahlin, Bailey, Montembeault, Quality Starts, more goalie talk and more (Mar 18)
Ramblings: Thoughts on Montour/Dahlin, Bailey, Montembeault, Quality Starts, more goalie talk and more
***
Now available for pre-sale – the 13th annual Interactive Playoff Draft List. Pre-order it here. It will be Friday April 5. If you bought the Ultimate Fantasy Pack in the summer, this will be included in that purchase. It is not included in the Keeper Fantasy Pack.
*
Travis Zajac had been having himself a great season, not only becoming one of the best defensive forwards in the game but also managing to put up decent points while doing so. A month ago his points-per-game average was higher than it’s been since 2010. But with all the injuries to the Devils Zajac no longer has a supporting cast and everything is falling apart in terms of fantasy numbers. His Hits are up and his PP time is up, but in the last 12 games he’s a minus-10 with five points. On Sunday I counted eight forwards in the lineup who have had AHL time this year plus Drew Stafford who is a regular healthy scratch.
Cory Schneider is getting regular work every second game now. The pattern has continued for 11 games and no matter how spaced apart each game is, Schneider and Mackenzie Blackwood are straight up rotating. Schneider has four consecutive Quality Starts, so this system is working well for him as he moves further down the road to recovery.
Since starting off his rookie season with 18 points in 23 games (0.78), Will Butcher has 54 points in 129 games (0.42). That’s a 34-point pace.
*
The Avalanche are really trying to squeeze value, any value, out of the third-round draft pick they gave up to get Derick Brassard. He has seen 21 minutes of PP time over the last six games (3.5 minutes per game!) and has come up empty. This is while on that power play with two of the league’s leading scorers. And to make matter’s worse, he is minus-7 in that span. He is winning faceoffs though (at least 60% FOW in each of the last five games), I’ll give that much.
Since picking up Brassard, Carl Soderberg’s great season has come to end. Now he’s back to mediocre season. Soderberg has two points in his last 10 games and is minus-6 in that span.
Philipp Grubauer has posted five consecutive Quality Starts and three shutouts, including one Sunday. With Semyon Varlamov coming off four consecutive non-Quality Starts and the Avs scratching for wins here, Grubauer is going to get more starts than we would have guessed two weeks ago.
*
Alexander Nylander was riding a four-game points streak (six points) for Rochester when he was called up by the Sabres last week. It took him four games but he finally got on the board for the big club, notching two assists Sunday. He was on a line with Conor Sheary and Evan Rodrigues.
Check out our scouting profile for Nylander, including his PNHLe graph (new feature!) here.
Brandon Montour has six points in the 10 games since joining the Sabres, and just one of those via the power play. He is getting mostly second-unit PP time and yet is still producing offense. He hasn’t impacted Rasmus Dahlin in terms of PP time, but because Dahlin is paired up with Montour at even strength, he seems to be tied down. As the better player defensively, Dahlin is stuck being responsible while Montour gets free rein. Dahlin did get an ES point Sunday, but including that one he has just two points in those 10 games that he’s been paired up with Montour. He’s also a minus-7. This pairing is something to watch and could influence projections for 2018-19.
*
David Perron has points in each of his two games since returning from injury. He is filling in on the first line for the Blues, taking Vladimir Tarasenko’s spot.
It’s still early, just five games in, but it looks like the Blues are leaning towards an every-other-game goalie rotation for the time being. Allen has four consecutive Quality Starts. Last five games:
Jake Allen – 1-2-2, 2.17, 0.920, 1 SO, 4 QS
Jordan Winnington – 3-2-0, 2.04, 0.922, 1 SO, 2 QS
The numbers have been comparable, but the team is still coming together better in front of “Winnington”.
*
Ryan Suter picked up an assist Sunday but he has had a tough run of late, managing five points in his last 15 games. Suter had 26 points in 31 games to start the year. Then his partner Matt Dumba suffered an injury early in Game 32. Suter has 19 points in 42 games with Jared Spurgeon by his side.
Mathew Barzal’s two assists Sunday gives him six points in six games. This is on the heels of a big slump that saw just nine points in 21 games. He’s playing with Jordan Eberle and Anders Lee now after playing most of the season with Josh Bailey and Anthony Beauvillier.
I’m disappointed in Beauvillier given his golden opportunity this year. But I’m guessing it came about one year too soon. I’ll be still interested in landing him as a depth guy for next season and see what happens, but man – he’s had every chance this year. From linemates to ice time to prime zone starts to pretty good secondary PP time. All for maybe 30 points in the end?
Just five points in his last 13 games for Josh Bailey. And now he’s not only without John Tavares on his line, but both Anders Lee and Barzal are on another line. His linemates? Tom Kuhnhackl and Valtteri Filppula. I had enough room on my bench in my one league to hang onto him, but I certainly have no qualms about dropping him. He won’t be one of my 12 keepers and frankly if I can keep 18 I doubt he’d make that list either. We all saw this decline coming once Tavares left, but he had been hanging in there pretty well with 45 points in 59 games before this slump.
*
Evgeni Malkin was honored on Saturday for getting his 1000th point last week. Later that game he suffered a shoulder injury and is considered “week to week”. To me, that puts him out for the season or at best he’s back for the last game or two. With him out of the lineup, the Sidney Crosby line remained intact (Jared McCann, Jake Guentzel). Teddy Blueger shifted to center in Malkin’s spot and Bryan Rust moved up to Blueger’s wing slot.
If you missed the Battle of Pennsylvania Sunday, the Flyers tied the game at one with 19 seconds left. Then they won the game with four seconds left in OT. The Flyers did a ton of line juggling, and that’s been the case a lot lately thanks to Jakub Voracek’s recent suspension and the team desperate for wins. But whatever line gets Sean Couturier does just fine. Couturier has become the driver, and not the passenger. He has 64 points in his last 56 games.
{youtube}tSwqmFLRc98{/youtube}
After losing his first start since being called back up from the AHL, Carter Hart had a hell of a second game Sunday. He stopped 42 of 43 for the OT win.
*
Jacob Markstrom has Quality Starts in seven of his last eight games, and he stopped 44 of 46 on Sunday for the win. Since November 24 Markstrom is 19-12-7, 2.39 and 0.923 with 28 Quality Starts (73.7% QS is pretty spectacular).
*
Sam Montembeault started his fifth consecutive game Saturday. He had one game of NHL experience prior to that. After three straight Quality Starts, his fourth game wasn’t a QS but he still got the win. And on Sunday, Game 5, it was a loss (three goals on 22 shots). I think, with the momentum petering out for Monty, the Panthers will return to the James Reimer – Roberto Luongo duo again, now that they’re both apparently healthy. But I’ve been a fan of Montembeault and I’m impressed with his start in the NHL. What I like most is that he’s Florida’s top goalie prospect, and at this point is their goalie of the future by default. Not by talent, but by timing. Not that he’s a terrible goalie, he’s a decent prospect, but the timing is lining up right for him. He’s 22 right now, and Reimer – Luongo are paired up for two more years. When he’s 25, he’ll step right in and in the meantime he’ll fill in for injuries (which happen a lot with these two).
*
Last week the Leafs signed undrafted free agent defenseman Joseph Duszak. He had a massive junior year in the NCAA with 47 points in 37 games, plus 42 PIM. He’s 21, a little on the small side (5-10) but can move the puck. His next two season will likely see him in the AHL but I think he has potential if developed properly. You can read our scouting report and PNHLe graph on Duszak here.
Detroit signed LW Taro Hirose, a shifty winger for Michigan State, as a free agent. Hirose had 50 points in 36 games in his junior year. I included Hirose as a player to watch in the NCAA free agent section of my Midseason Guide. The Wings also signed another player I had in the MSG as a free agent to watch – Ryan Kuffner. He was Max Veronneau’s linemate and ended up outscoring the more highly-touted Veronneau 44 points to 37 (in 31 games).
Veronneau, as you know, signed with Ottawa and promptly picked up an assist in his second NHL game. He picked the right team to sign with, even if he wasn’t already from Ottawa. This team is going to be young next year and he has a reasonable shot of making it.
The Canucks signed another guy I listed in the MSG (so I had four out of the five big names last week in the Midseason Guide) – defenseman Josh Teves. The NHL squad isn’t exactly flush with prime puck-moving defensemen so I’ll be interested in seeing his impact. It’s a shame he’s not a right shooter, or I’d like him even more.
*
Brendan Perlini has had his share of struggles since joining the Blackhawks, culminating in healthy scratches littered throughout February. But since getting back into the lineup March 2 he has 10 points in seven games. This is thanks to being put on the Dylan Strome/Alex DeBrincat line, supplanting Dominik Kahun. The 22-year-old Perlini was the 12th overall draft pick in 2014 so giving up on him for the long term would have been premature.
*
Frozen Tools update: We added a new stat RBS (Really Bad Start…yeah, I know): If a goalie has a SV% of less than 0.850 in a game he gets an RBS. This is in the goalie profiles and game logs. We also increased the reports in the line combos section so that “Last Game Lines” now has five most common lines (up from four) and “Last 3 Game Lines” now has the six most common line combos (up from four).
Fantasy Geek update: Running reports currently gives an error. The sheer size of the data this late in the season is at the heart of this. We will shut down the site (or we did, if you’re reading this later) from 3am to 6am EST to make our fixes live. Hopefully you can run reports better after this.
*
See you next Monday.

NHL expansion draft 2017: Protection lists for all 30 teams
Which players did your team protect from the Vegas Golden Knights?
The 2017 NHL expansion draft is only days away, and the rest of the league has prepared itself for the chaos to come. Teams submitted their protection lists to the NHL on Saturday afternoon, and the league announced them officially Sunday morning.
Up to 11 players can be protected by each team, with that number depending on the positions of the players involved. There are just two methods teams can protect players: the 7-3-1 format, in which they protect seven forwards, three defensemen, and one goalie, or the nine-player format, in which they protect eight skaters and one goalie.
By the time the expansion draft ends, Vegas will need to have picked a minimum of 14 forwards, nine defensemen, and three goalies.
Also in effect now through the expansion draft on Wednesday night is a roster freeze for any transaction that doesn’t involve the Golden Knights. Teams can still make trades with Vegas, which is also free to negotiate with and sign free agents, but all other deals must wait.
As the 10 a.m. deadline comes to pass, we’ll have all 30 protected lists here in one spot for your convenience! Check out where your teams stands below. (This list is currently updating)

Fantasy Hockey Podcast: Yes We McCann
Have you heard of the latest genre of fantasy hockey podcast? It's called streamo! And this episode of the Keeping Karlsson Hockey Podcast is a pioneer of the scene, giving you all the news and analysis you need to get an edge ahead of the biggest weeks of your season.
Elan and Brian are joined by Stream Scheme's Davey B, and together the trio talks about how they tweak their strategies for the fantasy playoffs, and which decent and perfectly rosterable players might not cut it with bad schedules next week. They also cover the flipside: players who are normally FA fodder who suddenly look attractive because of some extra games played they can offer you over the first part of the week.
Also: what happened to Jimmy Vesey? Do we have a tandem in St. Louis? Does someone really need to score in New Jersey? Can anyone continue scoring in Anaheim? ..and, of course, plenty more.
Don't follow Dave on Twitter, but if you get the desire, listen until he end of the show for his handle.
Players discussed on this episode include Travis Sanheim, Phil Danault, Justin Williams, Jonathan Drouin, Josh Leivo, Brock Boeser, Elias Pettersson, Bo Horvat, Craig Smith, Mikael Granlund, Colin Miller, Mark Stone, Anze Kopitar, Drew Doughty, Dustin Brown, Nazem Kadri, Andreas Johnsson, Kasperi Kapanen, Jimmy Vesey, Vladislav Namestnikov, Mika Zibanejad, Pavel Buchnevich, Filip Chytil, Brett Howden, Pierre-Luc Dubois, Josh Anderson, Kyle Palmieri, Travis Zajac, Jakub Voracek, Travis Konecny, Nolan Patrick, Oskar Lindblom, Jack Eichel, Sam Reinhart, Conor Sheary, Gabriel Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, J.T. Ramblings: Updates on Karlsson, Schultz, Zajac; Lineup Shuffling; Trade Bait – February 5
We had a big shake-up in Buffalo as Jeff Skinner was moved down to the second line to play with Casey Mittelstadt and Jason Pominville. The top line now looks like Sheary-Eichel-Okposo. How long will this last? No telling, but the panic button has been smashed.
Mittelstadt is now also on the top PP unit with Rasmus Ristolainen being booted to the second unit.
They also called up C.J. Smith, a 24-year old collegiate signing with 85 points in 98 AHL games. You can read his Dobber profile here.
*
Speaking of shake-ups, John Tortorella has bumped Artemi Panarin down to the second line with Nick Foligno on the top line with Cam Atkinson and Pierre-Luc Dubois. I assume the idea is to spread out the scoring but this could hurt Panarin’s trade value should they decide to go this route.
*
Erik Karlsson was back in practice with the Sharks, though his time on the ice was brief. The team starts a four-game road trip on Tuesday in Winnipeg but the fact he’s with the team indicates he should return before the road trip wraps up next Monday night.
*
As far as the line changes for both Buffalo and Columbus go, I wouldn’t expect either to last very long. Call it a hunch. Like with Colorado now going back to their old top line after just one game.
*
Still no Evgeni Malkin at practice for the Penguins.
In more optimistic Penguins news, Justin Schultz was in a regular jersey at practice for Pittsburgh on Monday. He’s steadily making his way back, but fantasy owners will need patience as he might need some time to get up to speed. Though he was practicing on the second PP unit so maybe his return will be quicker than I anticipated.
*
Travis Zajac did not practice with the Devils after missing the team’s weekend game, and Marcus Johansson left said practice after talking to the trainers. Tough times for New Jersey right now.
*
Sven Baertschi was out of the lineup on Monday night with an illness. Tim Schaller took his spot on Bo Horvat’s line. It’s not expected that Baertschi should miss much time.
*
Pheonix Copley signed a three-year deal with the Washington Capitals, carrying an average annual value of $1.1-million. He’s going to look good in a Seattle uniform in a couple years.
*
It appeared Alex Edler hit his face on the ice during the third period of Monday night’s game after getting tangled up in front of his net with Flyers forward Jakub Voracek. There was a lot of blood on the ice and he stayed down for a while, with the stretcher being summoned. He left on the stretcher but was sitting upright and apparently coherent. Let’s hope there is no long-term injury out of this.
Jakub Voracek and Sean Couturier each scored a goal in the 2-1 win with Carter Hart stopping 41 of 42 shots. That makes back-to-back 40-plus save wins for Hart, his seventh consecutive victory. This kid might have a future!
*
John Gibson was pulled in Toronto’s 6-1 win over Anaheim. This was the subsequent performance after their thrashing via the Jets. He didn’t seem very happy about the circumstances, either.
Andreas Johnsson had two goals and two assists from the fourth line while William Nylander had one of each. That makes six points in his last five games for young Nylander. Is he starting to finally heat up? Also, put Johnsson on that third line please.
The story was Jake Muzzin, though, with a goal and two assists in just his third game from the Leafs. He also had an awesome sequence where he crunched Corey Perry, drew a penalty, and scored on the subsequent power play. I think Leafs fans are going to like him.
*
Jeff Carter left Los Angeles’s game in the second period with a lower-body injury (per the broadcast) and he did not return. We will post an update when there is one.
Adrian Kempe had a three-point night as the Kings beat the Rangers 4-3 in overtime with Tyler Toffoli marking the overtime winner. It’ll be interesting to see if Toffoli lands in a new locale within the next month.
*
With the Super Bowl behind us (hopefully the hangover wasn’t too bad on Monday morning), the race to the NHL playoffs is on, especially in the Western Conference where there are five teams within Vancouver’s 54 points for the final playoff spot (as of Monday afternoon). It means we’re also just a few weeks away from the trade deadline, a very important time of the year for fantasy owners. Sometimes your player gets traded to a new team and does almost nothing (think of Rick Nash or Tomas Tatar last year), and sometimes it changes their season’s fortunes (think of J.T. Miller or Evander Kane).
I wanted to look at TSN’s trade bait board and go through a few players that are hopefully going to land more on the Miller/Kane side of things than the Nash/Tatar side.
  Wayne Simmonds
It seems all but certain that Simmonds is gone, given his age, pending UFA status, and the team’s unlikelihood of reaching playoffs.
The 2017-18 season was a poor one for Simmonds, though he had a plethora of injuries that started from the very beginning of the year right through to the end. The hope was that he’d be healthy and back to his usual production in 2018-19, but that hasn’t been the case as his goals per game this year (0.31) is actually lower than it was last season (0.32). We know that he’s in the decline phase of his career and as a power forward, could age even worse (think of guys like Ryan Kesler, Corey Perry, or Milan Lucic). The problem isn’t actually his five-on-five scoring – his 0.8 goals/60 minutes is a three-year high – but rather it’s the power play, where his shooting percentage (14.29 percent) has been cut nearly in half compared to 2016-17 (27.45 percent). This won’t come as a shock to most, but his conversion rate has been cut nearly in half despite his role not changing too much. Here are his shot locations at five-on-four in 2016-17 (from Hockey Viz):
And here are his shot locations at five-on-four this year:
It should be noted that his PP shot rate this year is consistent with his normal output, so his PP goal total (or lack thereof) is largely a function of shooting percentage and not shot volume.
Simmonds has never been known as a play driver, he’s always been known as a specialist; a power forward who can be a monster with the man advantage. I have to think that he can regain something resembling his form in another locale. The question is which playoff (or Cup) contender needs depth on the right wing in the form of a PP specialist? Two teams come to mind in San Jose and Montreal.
The Sharks are loaded on the left side. They have Evander Kane and Timo Meier (who can play both sides but has been on the left lately while lining up with Joe Pavelski), as well as Tomas Hertl when they don’t have him lined up as a centre (which has been often this year). The right side is a little more barren with only Pavelski to speak of. Joonas Donskoi is a fine play driver but I’m still unsure of his scoring upside. Simmonds would give them a guy to play in their middle-six as well as clean up the garbage around the net on the power play given Brent Burns’s shooting proclivity.
As for Montreal, they have the same issue as after Brendan Gallagher, things get a little thin on the right side. Right now, they have Paul Byron (who is injured), Joel Armia (who should be on the fourth line), and Nicolas Deslauriers (???). They also have one of the worst power plays in the NHL. The Habs are a very good five-on-five team and Carey Price is looking more like the old Carey Price over the last couple of months. If Price can maintain this level of play (which is a big IF), the power play is the glaring weak spot, and Simmonds can help. I wasn’t expecting the Habs to be this good this year but they are a top-5 team in the East and Simmonds shouldn’t be too expensive to acquire. In other words, they won’t have to mortgage their future to get some help this year.
  Gustav Nyquist
It’s been quite the fascinating season for Nyquist. There were absolutely no expectations for him this year in Detroit, coming off three straight seasons producing under 50 points and never more than 21 goals. He’s currently on a 70-point pace, though, and has been dynamic on the top line with Dylan Larkin. With Larkin injured now, though, there isn’t much at centre for Nyquist to play with besides (perhaps) Andreas Athanasiou.
Teams looking for Nyquist wouldn’t necessarily be looking for a goal scorer, they’d be looking for someone to facilitate other goal scorers. A guy who can get out of his zone, and into the offensive zone, with possession of the puck to look for trailers, seam passes, or to start the cycle. Who fits that bill? Two teams from the Central.
It’s no big secret that Nashville needs more secondary scoring. Kevin Fiala hasn’t taken the next step as expected, especially in the goals department, Kyle Turris has been injured, Craig Smith hasn’t scored in a month, and so on. Being able to put Nyquist on the second line with Fiala and Turris (when he’s healthy, which may be very soon) could help them both going as playoffs start to roll around.
Winnipeg has really struggled since the Nikolaj Ehlers injury and Patrik Laine has been mired in a brutal slump. Adding a rental like Nyquist would allow for one of Ehlers or Kyle Connor to slide to the third line and play with Mathieu Perreault, it would give Laine a legitimate playmaker at five-on-five and provide insurance in case of another injury like the one Ehlers suffered.
  Brayden Schenn
One name that really stuck out to me is Brayden Schenn. He was acquired before the 2017-18 campaign and had a very good year with 28 goals and 70 points. His 2018-19 season hasn’t been a good one, but the same could be said for most of the Blues. But this team has really turned around its fortunes over the last month or so and Schenn has six points in his last four games.
Seeing as Schenn has another year left, a trade would have to come from a team that expects to contend both this year and next, and may need some insurance in case of free agents. One of these teams is San Jose (Pavelski is a pending UFA). Two others seem obvious: Dallas and Carolina.
It’s no secret that Dallas, like Nashville, needs more depth scoring (though the former is in a much worse position depth-wise than the latter). What Dallas also needs is players to take advantage of whatever remains of Tyler Seguin’s and Jamie Benn’s peak years. Next season will be Benn’s age-30 campaign, so the clock is ticking. I assume, however, that the Blues wouldn’t trade a player of Schenn’s calibre to a division opponent.
We’re left with Carolina. At time of writing, they’re tied for the final playoff spot in the East and the addition of Nino Niederreiter has provided the team with a much-needed boost. The long-awaited shooting regression has begun, and the team is winning while playing excellent hockey. They also have Jordan Staal hopefully recovering from his concussion. Schenn would give the team another scoring boost, and give them some added depth for next year. It also gives them some cover in case Martin Necas isn’t ready for a regular centre role in 2019-20.

                                                                      Notable Notes
The 33-year old Alex Ovechkin has 37 goals in the 50 games he’s played this season. Can we just take a second to appreciate how insane that is? Ovi leads the league in goal-scoring and has a seven-goal lead on second place. There are a bunch of players who haven’t even scored seven goals yet! That Nicklas Backstrom guy is pretty good too – with 51 points in 49 games. While T.J. Oshie has been the third member of this line recently, Tom WIlson has also seen considerable time on Washington’s top forward unit. In case you were curious, the Ovechkin-Backstom-Oshie trio has controlled a higher percentage of the shot share (52%) compared to the Ovechkin-Backstrom-Wilson line (49%).
With nine points in his last seven games, Frank Vatrano has been on fire lately. Across his three previous NHL seasons, the greatest number of games he’d played in a single year was 43. In 2018-2019, he’s already played 47 games with plenty more ahead of him. Vatrano is in a great situation playing alongside Aleksander Barkov and Evgenii Dadonov, but he’s simply not getting enough ice-time to inspire confidence in his long-term value. Speaking of his line mates, Barkov is one of the best two-way players in the league and Dadonov has been a positive possession player throughout his time in the NHL. So, it’s surprising to see how underwhelming this line’s advanced numbers are. They’ve controlled less than 48% of all shots taken while they’re on the ice, 46% of scoring chances and just 42% of high-danger opportunities. Granted, the sample size is still relatively small (58 minutes), so we might see some improvement going forward. One final note on this line and it has to do with Dadonov. He had 43 points in 42 games to close out last season, so don’t be surprised if he has a hot stretch to close out the 2018-2019 campaign.
youtube
The Arizona Coyotes define resilience. No matter how many times you knock them down, they’ll find a way to get back up and stay in the fight. Despite the number of significant injuries they’ve had to deal with this season, they remain within striking distance of a playoff spot. A large part of the team’s recent success can be attributed to a few cold Coyotes getting hot. Exhibit A is Richard Panik – the 27-year-old forward managed just 14 points in his first 39 games of the season but has seven in his last eight. Exhibit B? Vinnie Hinostroza. He had 12 points in 32 games to start the season but has also turned it around with six in his last eight. While I’m hesitant to recommend rostering either player for the rest of the season, they certainly make for viable streaming options when Arizona has a favourable schedule. In fact, I might even take it a step further for Panik who is seeing the most ice-time of his career (16:51) and might be on a hot streak that you can ride for the next little while. How does that Snoop Dogg song go? Keep him while he’s hot? Drop him when he’s not? As much as I want to close this segment with that clever wordplay, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the Panik-Stepan-Hinostroza line has controlled 55% of all shot attempts while they’re on the ice. That number is made even more impressive when you realize that they start more of their shifts in the defensive zone than in the offensive zone.
Nino Niederreiter has been a Carolina Hurricane for just four games and he already has four goals – he had nine goals in 46 games with the Wild prior to the trade. Look, I know the sample size is still small, but this guy is still available in 58% of Yahoo Leagues. A large majority of you can essentially acquire him for free. In his four games with Carolina, he’s been averaging four shots a game while seeing about 17 minutes of ice-time – both huge improvements from his situation in Minnesota. With all due respect to his teammates in Minny, Sebastian Aho is probably the most talented player Nino has played with recently, so I’m curious to see how the two of them perform as a duo moving forward. As a line, Aho, Niederreiter and Justin Williams have been pretty dang impressive. Again, I must stress that we’re working with a super small sample size as this trio has played together for just under 31 minutes through four games this season. I’m going to throw some pretty impressive numbers at you, so it’s important that you keep that in mind. They’ve controlled 65.6% of all shots taken while they’re on the ice, generating 66.7% of all scoring chances, and creating 64.3% of all high-danger opportunities while on the ice.
