Best Horror Anime To Watch on Netflix

Come every October, audiences can be guaranteed that programming will shift over to horror-centric content to fit with Halloween. With the litany of streaming services that now exist, it’s gone from being difficult to fill 31 days of content to it being a serious struggle to fit everything in. There’s horror programming everywhere at the moment and this is also true when it comes to anime.

Netflix has built up an increasingly impressive library of anime content that includes some moody horror selections that are perfect for the season (or anytime really). However, with so many titles out there it’s not always easy to know what’s worthwhile, especially when the names of some series don’t do much to help on the matter. Here’s a helpful selection of some of Netflix’s best and most frightening anime titles so you don’t have to dig through the herd.

Parasyte –the maxim–

How Many Episodes: 24

Sub and Dub

There are plenty of anime that feature unassuming humans who are suddenly paired together with a supernatural partner or even become a hybrid of man and beast themselves. Parasyte -the maxim-,however, is the only one that feels like it could be an unofficial sequel to The Thing. Aliens have invaded the planet with the goal to gradually subjugate the entire human race. Shinichi Izumi is a run of the mill highschooler who finds himself bonded with one of these parasitic monsters who takes up residence living inside his hand. Shinichi and his alien parasite try to root out and eliminate the rest of these predatory species and the result is an amazing hybrid of mystery and action with constant body horror thrown in for good measure. There are hundreds of different aliens featured in anime, but the threats in Parasyte will actually make stomachs churn. In addition to the disturbing visuals, Parasyte crafts a surprisingly emotional relationship between Shinichi and the alien living in his hand.

Devilman Crybaby

Sub and Dub

The Devilman series has been around for decades in various iterations, but the most recent take on the material, Devilman Crybaby, feels special and like it’s trying to do something different with the property. Devilman Crybaby‘s plot isn’t overly complex. It features a world that’s at risk of being overrun by demons. Akira bonds with a demon in a way that turns him into Devilman, a hybrid between man and demon that’s the key to ending this war. Devilman Crybaby is dripping in carnage and it’s a series that trades in extremes. The legendary Masaaki Yuasa is the director and it’s the fluid ways that he plays with animation and color that makes Devilman Crybaby such a delight. Bloodshed and monsters have never been so visually beautiful.

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress: The Battle of Unato

How Many Episodes: 3

Sub and Dub

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is like if Resident Evil and Snowpiercer had a baby. It’s one of the few genuinely creative takes on the zombie genre in years. The Battle of Unato is Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress’ movie that’s set six months after the events of the series and it features the humans’ united front to take back their world from the undead. The animation is on a whole other level and there’s such satisfying world building present in this broken steampunk society. Obviously a knowledge of the original anime is helpful here, but The Battle of Unato can still be appreciated by genre fans who are looking for something like Attack on Titan meets Frankenstein. It’s a smart combination of old-world technology with radical new forms of destruction. Netflix splits up Battle of Unato into three busy episodes, which makes this the perfect watch that won’t take up a lot of time and can help bring more people around to the preceding series.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

How Many Episodes: 26 and 2 Movies

Sub and Dub

Neon Genesis Evangelion may not immediately come across as a horror series, but there’s disturbing imagery that’s present from the first episode that only becomes more intense as the series goes on. Evangelion is a moody deconstruction of not just the mecha genre, but also human nature. The series elegantly meshes together provoking questions with incredible action sequences and gutting character drama. The anime stands out for its unique take on robots, monsters, and how it intertwines religion with it all. It’s an ambitious project, but few anime create the same sense of anxiety and dread as Evangelion. Neon Genesis Evangelion is still considered to be one of the most acclaimed and challenging anime even decades after its debut. There’s truly nothing else like it.

Ajin: Demi-Human

Sub and Dub

Ajin: Demi-Human is a horror anime that riffs on many of the themes that populate the genre. Kei Nagai learns that he’s an Ajin—a hybrid between human and demon—who have advanced regenerative abilities. Ajin can also create powerful ghost-like warriors to combat other Ajin, which is kind of like if Tokyo Ghoul mixed together with JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure. Ajin are hunted by the government and turned into science experiments, which makes Nagai and the rest of his kind determined to take out the corrupt organization and quell the conflict between human and Ajin. Ajin: Demi-Human is more interested in action and atmosphere than some of the heavier psychological issues explored in these other anime, but it’s still addictive and morbid fun.

Death Note

How Many Episodes: 37

Sub and Dub

Death Note is one of the bigger anime to come out of the past few decades and it’s because despite the hyperbolized places that the story goes, it still presents a parable that explores the curious nature of man and the dark places that curiosity can go. Death Note is a brilliant exercise in perspective as it shifts between killer and detective with the titular and mysterious Death Note caught in between. There’s something deeply terrifying about the Death Note’s power to kill anyone whose name is written inside of it and how flippantly Light Yagami utilizes this function. Death Note has some provoking thoughts and it’s impressive that it’s able to mesh such exaggerated visuals and extreme elements into this disturbing character study. Part of the joy in Death Note is that Light makes mistakes from the start and only works himself deeper to the point of no return.

Erased

How Many Episodes: 12

Sub and Dub

Erased is a fantastic mix of genres that wraps together elements of horror with science fiction and psychological thrillers. It tells a very different kind of story about the pursuit of a serial killer and plots a tight story that doesn’t meander within a lean 12 episodes. The anime centers around Satoru, a man who experiences a phenomenon known as “Revivals” that send him back briefly in time to help prevent accidents. Suddenly Satoru’s mother is killed and it looks like the culprit has ties to a series of crimes from nearly two decades ago. Satoru’s next Revival sends him back to his childhood with the opportunity to prevent these crimes and save his mother in the process. Erased isn’t interested in the mechanics behind Satoru’s ability and it instead focuses on powerful character dynamics and a mystery that’s actually suspenseful and frightening. Satoru’s efforts to solve this crime as a 10 year-old boy makes for a fantastic complication.

Dorohedoro

How Many Episodes: 12

Sub and Dub

Horror anime should primarily be scary, but one of the perks of the genre is that anime can animate terrifying visuals on a level that often surpasses standard American animation. There’s still a lot of debate on whether the increased presence of CG in anime is a good thing or not, but Dorohedoro is proof that it can be used effectively and stylistically to amplify the surreal nature of the story at hand. Dorohedoro is set in a wild gig-economy world where magic is rampant and the schism between humans and sorcerers creates crime and disorder. Most humans are subjected to crude magic and find themselves with bizarre heads as a result. Caiman, the main character, wakes up with a reptile head and no memories of who he is, which leaves him even more vulnerable than usual in this chaotic world. Dorohedoro is another excellent example of creative world building that mixes horror together with fantasy and crime in an inspired way. It’s the type of freaky meditation of identity and society that Bright wishes it had been.

Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan has grown into one of the most popular anime series of this decade and it’s incredible to see how the scope of the story has slowly grown over time. The anime takes place within a walled city where humanity has feared the gigantic Titans that roam the land outside their walls. The anime chronicles the population’s efforts to combat these monsters, but it also looks at the war that’s been going on for generations and the sordid history of how Titans originated in the first place. Attack on Titan truly rewards dedicated audiences and the betrayals, revelations, and character development is just as satisfying as the epic fights with hordes of Titans. Netflix only has the first season of Attack on Titan available, but it’s still a convenient way to get introduced to the influential anime before its fourth and final season hits.

The Promised Neverland

How Many Episodes: 12

Sub and Dub

The Promised Neverland tells such an addicting, enigmatic story that there’s a reason a slew of horror films and even Stephen King have riffed on the idea that’s at its core. The anime is set in a broken version of the future and it looks at a number of young children who are confined to an orphanage. The orphanage’s charity seems to be a blessing in this harsh times, but it turns out that there’s actually something much more sinister going on with the orphanage and the people that run. The Promised Neverland tells a disturbing story that gets more intense with every turn. It’s not afraid to incorporate deadly creatures, but more than anything else it highlights how humans can be more evil than anything else. The second season of The Promised Neverland is on its way, so these excellent debut episodes should be mandatory viewing. A live-action adaptation is in the works at Amazon.

What you have been told isn't entirely wrong, but I think it misses the key purpose of these important particles and has caused you unnecessary confusion.

Unfortunately, Duolingo does a really poor job of explaining core grammar particles. And the roles of がand は are difficult to clearly understand from a bunch of random practice sentences without a proper foundation.

Let's start with the basics.

が is the subject marking particle. It marks the grammatical subject of the sentence. This is typically the actor or doer of the verb's action. Or in a descriptive or copular sentence, the subject will be the thing that is being described or compared.

ジョンが学校へ行きます。 (Jon ga gakkō e ikimasu.) "John goes to school."

In this sentence, ジョン is followed by が so we know that John is doing the action described by the verb 行きます "to go". And 学校 is marked by へ, the direction marking particle, so we know that he is going TO the school. The particles describe the grammatical relationship between the words. And が is one of the most important, since it defines the subject of the sentence.

However, you have probably noticed by now that a lot of sentences do not use が at all. Instead, they will frequently use は. This is because the Japanese language tends to prefer to drop the subject out of the sentence when it isn't absolutely necessary.

は is the topic marking particle. It marks the topic of the conversation as a whole - whatever you happen to be discussing at the time. In English, topics are rarely used. But in Japanese, they are a core part of the language. Rather than stating the subject of your sentence directly, in Japanese, you will bring up a topic and allow the listener to understand your intended meaning based on context. There is a lot of contextual information built into the Japanese language and how it works, so the same sentence can end up meaning very different things in different contexts. It can be a little tricky to work out when you are new to the language, but it gets easier with practice and experience.

Using the previous example sentence, this is a much more natural sounding version:

ジョンは学校へ行きます。 (Jon wa gakkō e ikimasu.) "As for John, (he) goes to school."

In this sentence, John is the topic. The actual subject of the sentence is left implied, but easy to guess based on the context provided by the inclusion of a topic.

Interestingly, you could even drop the topic and simply say:

学校へ行きます。

This sentence is a perfectly valid sentence in Japanese, even though the subject has gone missing entirely. In a normal conversation, it would be clear from context. As a stand-alone sentence, the natural interpretation would be "I go to school", but in the right context, it might actually mean "He goes to school." or "You go to school." or even "They go to school."

For example, let's give a little more context ...

ジョンとメアリーは学生です。学校へ行きます。 (Jon to mearī wa gakusei desu. Gakkō e ikimasu.) "Regarding John and Mary, (they) are students. (They) go to school."

Notice how ジョンとメアリー (John and Mary) are marked は. That means that the rest of the sentence and the following sentences are related to that topic.

There's no exact translation of the particle は, since there is no direct English equivalent for its function, but I will tend to translate it as "As for X" or "Speaking of X" or "Regarding X" when I am doing a DIRECT translation from Japanese to English. When I want to make a more natural-sounding English translation, I will usually remove the topic and reorganize the sentence to match normal English grammar. In Japanese, the topic heavily used as a way to introduce something you wish to talk about in greater detail. The topic itself is important to the conversation as a whole, but it is always what comes AFTER the topic that is new information. That's where your attention should be focused.

So what about が? Most of the time, where you would expect a subject to be provided in English, you will either see a topic OR nothing at all. But sometimes, you can't avoid stating the subject. Either because it is part of a grammar pattern that requires a stated subject or because the subject itself is very important and needs to be emphasized. Since が is rarely used, it draws extra attention to the subject when you choose to state it plainly, rather than leaving it implied.

One of the most common places that you will see this in early Japanese studies are when you are using the verbs of existence, ある and いる. Generally, when you talk about whether or not something exists, you will use が.

あそこに猫がいる。 (asoko ni neko ga imasu.) "There is a cat over there."/"A cat exists over there."

猫 is marked by が because it is doing the verb's action. It is "existing" over there. It would sound rather strange to say it like this:

あそこに猫はいる。 (asoko ni neko ha imasu.) "As for the cat over there, (it) exists."

I mean ... why are you even bringing that up? Weird.

Topics are always shared information. Something that both you and your listener already know about. If it hasn't been discussed yet, new information must be introduced into the conversation first, usually with a shared topic or implied by contextual cues, or with a stated subject. So in order to use the cat as a topic, your listener must already know about it or at least be aware of its existence. Which sort of undermines the purpose of the whole sentence.

Now let's look at another example sentence:

象は鼻が長い。 (Zō wa hana ga nagai.) "Elephants have long noses."

Now look at how the grammatical particles mark this sentence. what do you see? In the naturalized English translation, the subject is "elephants." But is that true for the Japanese sentence?

Here's a hint. The word for "elephant" is 象 and the word for "nose" is 鼻.

That's right ... the grammatical subject is 鼻 which means that the subject is actually "nose". So what does this sentence really say in Japanese?

象は鼻が長い。 "As for elephants, (their) noses are long."

The structure is actually quite a bit different from what you might expect based on the original English translation. Due to the differences in sentence composition between English and Japanese, it is quite common to encounter natural English translations which deviate quite a bit from the Japanese sentence, both in terms of grammar and vocabulary.

Let's try another one:

ボブは猫が好きです。 (Bobu wa neko ga suki desu.) "Bob likes cats."

So .. what is the subject in this sentence? It's obviously not Bob.

Yep, it is 猫 (cat). In Japanese, fondness is expressed differently. Instead of using a verb to describe someone doing the action of liking something else, an adjective is used to describe the object of your affections as something that is liked or likeable. The person who is doing the liking is identified using a topic and the thing that is liked is the subject of the sentence.

ボブは猫が好きです。 "As for Bob, cats are liked."

I've only just touched the surface, regarding Japanese grammar and there's much more to say about the relationship between が and は, but I think that's probably enough for now.

Personally, I think the most important thing is to recognize that が always marks the subject and that the topic is NOT the same as the implied subject. The rest will become clearer as you read more Japanese and get better at deciphering what is actually being said in the Japanese sentences.

Also ... Don't trust too deeply in naturalized English translations when trying to understand new grammar. They can be quite misleading. It is always better to trust the particles instead. The particles will tell you what is really going on.

Gurren Lagann Anime Featured - Gurren Lagann takes place in a future where Earth is ruled by the Spiral King, Lordgenome, who forces mankind to live in isolated subterranean villages. These villages have no contact with the surface world or other villages and are under constant threat of earthquakes. Selected villagers called diggers are conscripted to expand their homes deeper underground. Simon, a meek young digger ostracized by his peers, finds solace in his best friend and older brother figure, an eccentric delinquent named Kamina. Kamina encourages Simon to join his gang, Team Gurren, to help him achieve his dream of visiting the surface world. One day, Simon unearths a drill-shaped key called a Core Drill, followed by a small mecha resembling a face called a Gunmen. Shortly thereafter, a huge Gunmen crashes through the ceiling and begins attacking the village, followed by a girl named Yoko, who attempts to repel the Gunmen. Simon uses his Core Drill to activate the smaller Gunmen (which Kamina names Lagann) and it's drilling-based abilities, and successfully uses it to destroy the larger Gunmen and break through the ceiling to bring him and Kamina to the surface world. Simon and Kamina learn from Yoko that humans on the surface are attacked each day by Gunmen piloted by beastmen, humanoid creatures who serve as Lordgenome's army. Kamina hijacks a Gunmen and names him Gurren, combining him with Lagann to form the mecha Gurren Lagann. Their actions inspire other humans to steal their own Gunmen and join Team Gurren, which makes Kamina rename it Team Dai-Gurren. Eventually Team Dai-Gurren captures an enemy Gunmen fortress to use as their base of operations, though Kamina is killed in the preceding battle by one of Lordgenome's four generals. Rossiu, a boy from another village, takes over the job of piloting Gurren, but Kamina's death causes Simon to sink into depression until he meets Nia, Lordgenome's daughter. Team Dai-Gurren is initially distrustful of her but allows her to join when it becomes apparent that she was abandoned by her father, like many who came before her. Nia helps Simon come to terms with Kamina's death, and the rest of Team Dai-Gurren prompt him to take up the role as the team's leader, leading them and other humans, who captured other Gunmen and Gunmen fortresses, to Lordgenome's palace. As the palace itself turns out to be a gigantic Gunmen called the Teppelin and launches armies of other Gunmen, the human forces hold them off while Simon, Nia, and Rossiu pilot Gurren Lagann against Lordgenome, who fights them in a similar Gunmen called Lazengann. When both Gunmen are damaged, he himself fights Simon in Lagann with his bare hands. Lordgenome emerges victorious, until Simon uses his Core Drill to defeat him once and for all.--excerpt from Wikipedia.--

Gurren Lagann is definitely part of the super robot tradition though, especially in regards to series such as Getter Robo. The emphasis on drills and Spiral Power is more than just a simple nod to the work of Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa, as they are almost direct parallels to how Getter Robo deals with things like Getter Rays.While the setting in Getter Robo is arguably bleaker and the presence of the green hued Getter Rays are lethal in the extreme, the sheer force of will used to tame such power can be similarly seen in Gurren Lagann and how the characters master their use of Spiral Power. To say that Gurren Lagann is simply derivative of Getter Robo would be both inaccurate and probably more than a little petty, as Gurren Lagann’s focus and narrative deals with the ramifications of Spiral Power in a unique and refreshingly honest way.Rather than use the sheer force of gruesome will that drives the pilots of Getter Robo insane, Simon and his compatriots have to find confidence within themselves in order to overcome the challenges they face. While Getter Robo is still a fascinating series and hugely engrossing with it, Gurren Lagann’s ongoing appeal is its refreshing optimism, even in the face of almost certain death.--excerpt from Ollie Barder on Forbes.-- There's an old saying in parts of the east and midwest United States: "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute. It'll change." This phrase perfectly fits Gurren Lagann, which is one of those shows that ends in a drastically different place than where it started. Sometimes the twists don't work out so well, and sometimes they lead to amazing storylines. But whichever way the show goes, Gurren Lagann is never boring. The surface world was always considered to be dangerous, but Kamina had dreams of leaving the village and exploring the world above. Then one day they stumbled upon a strange mecha and a scantily clad young girl named Yoko from the surface. What follows is a strange tale of action, heroism, determination, loyalty, comedy, and lots of fan-service. Stylistically, the series is similar to the random and downright odd antics of another Gainax-produced series, FLCL. But when it comes to substance, Gurren Lagann is unlike any other series in the mecha genre. Action is one of the strong points of this show. Giant robot battles haven't been this interesting in a long time. While the main mecha (called gunmen in this series) in this show is highly reminiscent of your standard Gundam-type fighting robot, there are many other designs that defy mecha anime standards. One of them even looks like a big talking banana.
