In mainstream competitive ballroom dancing, same-sex partnerships were not allowed until 2007 when the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF), which oversees competitive ballroom dancing worldwide, decided to finally allow same-sex couples to compete in mainstream competitions.

In 2019, the National Dance Council of America (NDCA) changed their rules and allowed same–sex and gender-neutral couples to compete against opposite–sex couples. The traditional definition of male as a leader and female as a follower changed as well. Now it is simply a leader and a follower regardless of sex or gender of dancers.

This 2006 photograph taken by Angela Jimenez shows same-sex ballroom dancers Petra and Caroline. The image captures a joyous and glorious moment. It also reminds us that there have been many who resisted the “status quo” to challenge the traditional rules, refused to be less than who they are, and pushed the boundaries.
