Why Don’t They Just Leave? – Lindsay Ann Burke Memorial Fund
LEARNED HELPLESSNESS is a phenomenon observed by psychologist Martin Seligman, about 50 years ago, which is still the basis of every abusive relationship. Seligmans experiments put dogs in cages and applied occasional electric shocks (this would probably not b allowed today). At first the dogs reacted w whining, barking and physical movement to try to avoid the shocks. Over time, they stopped reacting at all having learned there was no way to escape it. Eventually they refused any attempt to escape even as far as leaving the cage door open. This is Learned Helplessness. If u wonder why men and women in horrificly abusive situations dont leave? This is why.
