'The Gardens of Anuncia' Theater Review
'The Gardens of Anuncia' is an evocative, stylized musical inspired by the childhood of Graciela Daniele.
(L to R): Priscilla Lopez, Kalyn West in The Gardens of Anuncia (Julieta Cervantes) In order to deal with the past, sometimes memories must be altered to beautify the ugliness of their reality. This is one of the themes in Michael John LaChiusa’s musical, The Gardens of Anuncia, directed and choreographed by Graciella Daniele. The Gardens of Anuncia is currently running at Lincoln Center’s Mitzi…

tumblr mobile wouldn't let me post earlier so let's do a speedrun. brahms 4 mahler 9 and tchaikovsky 6 all have this in common: they'd be a satisfying enough piece of music if it was just the first three movements but the fourth movement elevates it to something beyond enjoyable, it becomes philosophy, it becomes worldly, it offers perspective. also the chicago symphony horn section has become a disaster since they denied david cooper his tenure. if i was on the board i would be freaking the fuck out and demanding we bring him back because the last few weeks the horn section has been straight up embarrassing (and this is a horn section that has a reputation of being one of the best in the world). there's a front of house guy at my job that i was like ooooo maybe i can seduce him hee hee even tho he's straight. but then today he boldly asked for my phone number and then told me he was bi (oops sorry!!!) so i'm hoping to kiss him at the upcoming holiday party. camille claudel has an exhibit at the art institute and it's phenomenal, i mean it's really comprised of two masterpieces and lots of work on a smaller scale, but nevertheless. i spent a lot of time with it yesterday, and then i went back to the art institute today, where i walked around the impressionism rooms and i was like oh, that's right 🙄 they also have rodin 🙄 but anyway it's incredible how claudel's sculpture conveys a sense of movement and maturity, and looking at her work--or rather, around her work, because i think when observing sculpture you should NOT stay in one place--it's simultaneously painful and exhilarating. also i just listened to the days of wine and roses cast recording and maybe it's better live but it struck me as way too academic and precise. i read a review of adam guettel's music once that said it sounded as though it were written in a manhattan penthouse, and that's definitely the case with this one. give me the melodrama! dig deeper! i think michael john lachiusa exists in a similar musical realm but also he's just so much better. and that's what you missed........on glee!

In 2019, Michael John LaChiusa said on a podcast that he was working on another show for Mary with Jack Cummings and I just put together what it was and they did another workshop on it last year and I love when things still have a chance to work out

The Gardens of Anuncia Review: The Anti Evita Musical
Graciela Daniele, a Broadway luminary for six decades, directs this lovely and peculiar musical written by her good friend Michael John LaChiusa, who uses Daniele’s life as the inspiration for a story about the family of strong women who nurtured her. “The Gardens of Anuncia” features a cast of golden-voiced actresses, but also a stag stand-up – by which I mean a deer (a hoofed mammal) who cracks…
