Celebrating the life and commitment to justice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on #MLKDay2023 #goodblacknewscalendar https://www.instagram.com/p/Cne_WQ-p86t/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
This is the single quotation that Bob Jones University pulled out to remember Martin Luther King, Jr. on #MLKDay2023.
Where does it come from?
It comes from two months before his assassination in February 4, 1968--two months before the BJU student body would give a standing ovation to King's assassination. It was a sermon at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, a sermon called "The Drum Major Instinct."
Here's the whole speech. Read it all. And here's the whole paragraph:
And this morning, the thing that I like about it: by giving that definition of greatness, it means that everybody can be great, (Everybody) because everybody can serve. (Amen) You don't have to have a college degree to serve. (All right) You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don't have to know about Plato and Aristotle to serve. You don't have to know Einstein's theory of relativity to serve. You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. (Amen) You only need a heart full of grace, (Yes, sir, Amen) a soul generated by love. (Yes) And you can be that servant.
What King was saying is the direct opposite of everything that BJU teaches.

Let us honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by reflecting on his impact on civil rights and equality, and committing to carry on his mission of justice for all.
One of the things we’re working on in our ERG at work (#DiverselyAbled), is how to shrink the space in between us. How do we do a better job of showing up for our council members, our ERGs, our teammates? Of course, this means that we face an issue that sometimes feels uncomfortable to talk about — racial equality. How do we get from there to a better place where we can openly talk about equality? We simply start talking about it and we don’t stop. It takes one person with the tiniest bit of courage. Is that you?
My life is beautiful because it’s filled with people of many different races and ethnic backgrounds from all over the world. I want to live in a world where we can all say that. I’m going to have to stop typing in a second because I can’t see through these tears. Today isn’t just a holiday — it’s life or death. It’s about real freedom. It’s about seeing people as more than numbers. It’s about getting outside ourselves. I leave you with these thoughts…
Remember UBUNTU: I am because we are. We are connected!
The great civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer noted: “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free.”
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. put it this way: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality.”
