You know. The thought occurs to me. That the reason Junko didn't just give the whole cast of DR2 their memories back. Is because it was never about them. And it was never about Junko actually coming back in their bodies.

Not for her.

It was literally all about screwing with Makoto.

Because all Junko had to do to get out was give them their memories back and tell them the plan, and most of them (if not all) would have willingly died to bring her back. That's why they were there in the first place - to bring her back. And we know Junko could have given them those memories at any point because she gave Mikan her memories back.

She just didn't.

Because it was significantly more entertaining to put on a show of the cast killing each other and sending it to Makoto and just, Hey, you know those people you were trying to save? Hey, GUESS WHAT.

Junko said, Hey, Makoto, you want another opportunity to beat me at a game where I could literally win easily - more easily than last time! I just don't have to do ANY OF THE THINGS I HAVE BEEN DOING, but you know what, I just want to screw with you and show you that your hope SUCKS. Oh, and also, can you bring Kyoko and Byakuya and then kill me again, I'd like to die again, please, I did not get enough sweet despair of death last time, you gonna come save these dweebs or what?

This didn't even have to be a game! This was not hard! Junko made it harder! To screw with Makoto! Because she doesn't actually care about winning! And she doesn't actually want to be back in the real world again, Izuru. The real world sucks, and she's tired of it! Just let her die already!

That's why it's very clear that Junko is waiting for Makoto. It's very clear - from her - that the Remnants aren't the main cast. Makoto is. The survivors are. It was never - for her - about getting back out into the main world.

It's literally just about screwing with Makoto. (And maybe getting him stuck for all of eternity in a virtual world with her. Maybe. That'd be fun, right, Makoto. Right, bestie. Right??)

Can you explain your Makoto Junko empathy theory?

The thing is Junko cannot shut up about other people suffering, she loves it, she gives people despair as a show of love, if she’s high empathy it makes a lot of sense she would do this, she’s leaching off other people’s despair, feeling their pain to increase her own. She lives to make others suffer and drag them into the crab bucket of despair to make her own despair worse, the snake biting its own tail. She’s also EXTREMELY aware of other people’s emotions and how they’ll respond to them and analytical aligned talents normally have a lot of problems with that.

Meanwhile Makoto while kind, struggles a bit with empathy, you can see it most clearly in how he treats post trial 2 Ishimaru, he’s kind but completely unable to connect with him about how he’s feeling, just being vaguely awkward and sympathetic. He admits that he feels no sympathy or anything for Celeste but he’s sad still because she was his classmate. While he startles at violence that startling tends to fade rather fast, hes less visibly shaken then characters like say Aoi or Toko around bodies or death. Once his shock fades he’s sad someone’s dead, but hes not feeling their pain or anything. He can get along with people who did horrible horrible things without much problem, this lets him help them be better but is something that basically requires one to not overly empathize the victims. There’s a reason someone like Aoi wasnt in danganronpa 2 but instead the other two low empathy survivors of Kirigiri and Byakuya. He cares for people not because he can feel their pain strongly, but because they’re PEOPLE and people deserve kindness

A sharp smile appeared on the face of the blobby fashionista being the masyermind and director of the hospital had let her in quite a sorry state.. She had the whole package and was enjoying every second of it her heart struggling to even beat~ so despairful!~

Even while she was meeting with someone she didn't stop chugging and eating lard.. She wanted to ruin herself further destroy her body make her face be unrecognisable with flab.. Sunken in despairful gluttony ~

"Wha?" Daffy then looks behind him and notices a group of skateboarding hooligans.

"Yo, we the Wild Grinders! My name's Lil' Rob and we just got hired by someone named Dough Funnie to take someone named Madoka Kaname down!"

"There might be only three of us but she's goin' down!" Says Jay Jay.

"Yeah!" Replied Goggles.

"H-Huh?! Wait! What are you-"

*BONK! BONK! BONK!*

Madoka would get knocked on the head by their skateboards three times, causing her to pass out and collapse on the ground.

"Amaaaaaaaaaazing job, team! Doug's gonna pay us some seriously wicked bucks when he hears about this!"

Madoka's heart and ghostly spirit would emerge from the knocked-out body, floating above it.

"I'll take that!" Lil' Rob steals the floating heart of Madoka.

"And I'll take this!" Jay Jay would steal Madoka's soul.

"And finally, I'll take this!" Goggles steal the body.

"We out! Peace!" The Wild Grinders then go their separate ways with the heart, soul, and body of Madoka, heading into some random tunnel.

"HEY!!! YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!! THAT'S ONE OF OUR FRIENDS!!!!" Donald then turns over to Junko, "We'll deal with you later!" He zaps Junko with a Stopga spell that freezes her in place to ensure she doesn't cause any trouble while they're gone.

"C'mon, we gotta get after these hooligans!" Donald Duck told Daffy and Rock as they proceeded to follow after the Wild Grinders.

Looks like this is what they meant by Madoka being ambushed.

“Awwww, I thought my bestest of friends would know I always have another way back.” Junko still kept some distance but she gave a cute smile before shifting to another look, she never could stick with just one persona. Maybe it was just the insanity that came with despair or maybe she just didn’t know how best to present herself, but it was something she’d never try to change. Being the Ultimate despair did come with one positive thing, she never cared how people viewed her. If she were just the Ultimate fashionista she’d crumble under the pressure as many others do, thinking about it, it was just another despair she’d never feel.

“Considering I’m in your class it would be hard to keep it away. Makoto thought it would be a good idea to keep me somewhere close where someone could keep an eye on me. Especially from Kamakura.” Of course it wasn’t a lie, she never did lie much. Sure, she told lies when they made the situation more interesting but most of the time she found the truth was more despairful than a little white lie. Not to mention it only caused unnecessary arguments and they were never that much fun for her to get involved, the only fighting she liked was watching a physical fight of two beings on the brink. Two terrified prey trying to act as the predator. That was the only fight she had delight in watching.

Hit with this earlier, so am sharing.

But the idea of Hope's Peak is that some people are just better than others. Whether they're born with Talent or fought hard for it or just happen to have it because they needed to survive, they are better than others. Specifically at this one thing they do. Whether or not that's all they'll ever be - regardless of whether or not they want that to be all they'll ever be - they are better than everyone else. And they're chosen to go to this special school because they're better.

The Reserve Course is throw us enough money, and we'll let you say that you're better, even though you're not. It's throw us money for the name and prestige. It's throw us money because everyone has bought into our school being better and having the people who are better. (Which gives the idea that when companies or teams or whatever are going through resumes, they're also specifically looking for HPA graduates.)

And Hope's Peak is all about how do we make the most Talented most bestest person possible to the point of human experimentation, where they rip apart everything that makes someone human - makes them themselves - just to make them the bestest human being ever.

And Junko starts the Tragedy by basically saying no, that's bullshit, treat everyone equally.

I mean, she says it in a lot of messed up ways, but that's what the Reserve Course riots are about. They're being used as cash cows for something they didn't agree to, they aren't being treated the same as the actual better than you people, and it's one of them who was taken and experimented on to be made the bestest person ever, not one of the better than you people, who is already better than you.

HPA has no concern for the value of an actual human life.

And Junko spits in their face because look, the best of your best, your actual student council, I can make them rip each other apart and look, your human experiment who is supposed to be the bestest person ever is just as bad as everyone else and no, look, they are just. like. everyone else.

So what does HPA do?

They don't learn their lesson.

They take the survivors of the attack on their academy for trying to pretend that some people are just better than others, and again, say you are better than everyone else, the only hope for humanity are you specialist special kids, so we will lock you and only you away, and not even think that other people could possibly stay in this honking huge building we have here, it's only for the specialist special people and they will make everything better once they get out!

Of course, Junko's going to throw a Killing Game with them.

They aren't better than everyone else.

That's the entire point.

They fall to the exact same problems that even your everyday normal person does: threat to loved ones, not wanting their secrets told, money, backstabbing - they are exactly the same as everyone else, and their Talent doesn't suddenly make them better people.

Fuck off with that some people are naturally better than others bullshit. You all suck.

Junko's the Ultimate Despair because she looks at the whole of humanity and sees that everyone is equally horrible (which is true).

Makoto's the Ultimate Hope because he looks at the whole of humanity and sees that everyone is equally able to change (which is also true).
