Guido Cavalcanti  | ‘La bella donna dove Amor si mostra’
The lovely lady who is Love for certain, Amor, full of valour and adorned, Draws the heart out of your very person: Takes your life away with her new-born, Since her cloister’s guarded so sweetly As every unicorn of India knows, And virtue arms it for the fierce tourney; Every fault receives its counter-blow, For she is surely of so great a value, That she lacks no aspect of the…

Completed Rome.
Usually, the daily puzzles are either fun facts or quotes about the capital city or are varied quotes from people whose heritage is from that country. Rome had 23 total facts/quotes that fit that and 8 that did not. Those 8? Quotes by Romanians. And 6 of those 23 that did fit the pattern were quotes about Rome by Romanians, making it 14 total by Romanians and 17 not. I didn’t count how many fun facts there were (and there’s no way to check after the fact), but there were absolutely more quotes from Romanians than from Italians (even if you include the Ancient Romans as Italian)—I remember 1 quote from an American and 1 from a Brit, and there were at least 3 fun facts, which puts it at at most 12 Italy vs 14 Romania. In Italy’s own goddamn month.
Now, yes, what is now Romania was part of the Roman Empire, but so were a lot of other countries. Yet none of them are included unless they’re talking about Rome (whether Modern or Ancient), only Italy and Romania are, and based on the sheer number of quotes by Romanians, they’re not considering the capital + its country in this case to be Rome + the former Roman Empire. It wouldn’t be half Romanians, half other nationalities + fun facts, it would be a much more even mix.
Clearly someone working on this app thinks Rome and Romania are the same thing.

Task || 002 — About the Mun.
01. what’s your name/alias you go by ??
Stephanie, but I go by Steph or S.
02. what’s your age ??
Well—if Dani’s ancient then I am prehistoric. If you insist on a precise number, I’m 30.
03. what’s your zodiac sign ??
Aquarius.
04. what’s your ethnicity ??
Dudes, I don’t even know my blood type let alone my heritage. What I do know is that I’m whiter than casper.
05. what’s your nationality ??
American.
06. what’s your favorite band and/or musical artist ??
Hahaha, cover your ears, Cody. It’s Taylor Swift.
07. what’s your dream job ??
My absolute dream job would be writing either as a novelist or showrunner. That said, I’m really passionate about teaching, and can’t wait have a classroom of my own.
08. what’s one place you would love to visit ??
My favorite city in the world is New York City, but I really want to visit Germany.
09. what’s your favorite tv show ??
Oh goodness... I’ve seen and loved way too many. If we’re talking ultimates though, I’m going to have to say Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
10. what’s your favorite movie ??
Remember the Titans. I am a sucker for sports films. I literally cry the whole time because they are just that moving.
11. what’s your favorite song ?
I don’t really have a favorite. I go through stages of listening to songs on repeat over and over again and then not revisiting them until some time later. Right now that includes “Don’t Throw it Away” by the Jonas Brothers and “Church” by Aly and Aj.
12. what’s your favorite sport ??
Baseball! I am a huge fan of the Cleveland Indians, though I’ve recently started stanning women’s soccer. How about that Christen Press though?
13. what’s your favorite food ??
Italian. I’m garbage for pizza and pasta.
14. what’s your favorite face claim to use ??
Hmmm. A few months ago I would have said Eliza Taylor without a doubt, but I’ve really taken to playing with Tasya Teles and Daniel Sharman as well.
15. what’s your least favorite face claim ??
I get very uncomfortable when people roleplay with child actors and/or children in general.
16. what’s your favorite character of yours to play ?? which do you think you’re most like ??
I have been with Rory for several years now, so I definitely feel like I know her the best. She’s very near and dear to my heart, so she’s probably my favorite. I love all my kids though. They’re all so different, and they provide me with such a unique perspective!
I don’t know if I’m really like any of my muses. If I had to pick one, I’d say Matt because I too cannot speak around girls. Haha I don’t have him anymore though, so maybe Ashton or Jonas.
17. what’s your sexuality ??
 I’m a lesbian because women 😍
18. what’s the last movie you saw in a cinema/theater ??
Ugh. I feel so set up by this question! I took my niece and nephew to see The Secret Life of Pets 2 today, and it was pretty cute.
19. what’s the worst injury you’ve ever had ??
The summer before 7th grade, I broke my leg and shattered my growth plate sliding into home plate. I was safe though, and we won the game! Too bad my pain tolerance levels are like zero, and it was the worst pain I’d ever felt. #embarrassing
20. what’s a random or interesting fact about you ??
This is the question I struggled with the most. I’m boring, y’all... I have a baby brain tumor that I call a ‘brain buddy’ because he’s not really doing anything up there but chillin’. Also, I once wrote a feature length Power Rangers Film when I was 12. I still have it!
21. do you listen to music while you write ??
Sometimes! If I do, it has to be very mellow because I get distracted very easily. If there is a song that really fits the moment or inspired me to write the moment, I’ll listen to it on repeat to keep the vibe. Otherwise, I’ll listen to instrumentals or Sleeping At Last’s album titled “Atlas.”
22. are you a morning, day, evening, or night writer ??
It all depends on when I have time. I honestly get my best writing done on pen and paper while I’m at work with fewer distractions, but a lot of times, I get inspired at night. I also did a lot of writing while substitute teaching, so it all just depends on if the situation allows for it and how focused I can get myself.
23. have you ever roleplayed intoxicated ??
Yes, it’s embarrassing. Don’t do it!
24. what language or languages do you speak ??
I only speak English fluently, but I can read French decently well.
25. how long have you roleplayed ??
I started role playing way back in the days of message forums and MSN chat. It was power rangers, and I was 14 so... 16 years. Damn.
26. favorite roleplay genre ??
Honestly, genre isn’t important to me. Give me a story worth telling, and I’m in. I just need plot. Everything else will fall into place.
27. one sound you hate & one you love ??
I fucking hate the sound of metal against metal or metal against teeth. Anything that gets that loud screeching noise is a big no from me.
I love the sound of heavy rain and thunder storms.
28. do you believe in ghosts ??
I’m fairly certain that no less than three of my former houses have been haunted, so yes. Yes, I do.
29. do you believe in aliens ??
Sure, why not? I find it harder to believe that the galaxy exists with only us.
30. do you believe in true love ??
Yes, I do. I believe in reincarnation, and soulmates, and finding each other in each and every universe. It might not be forever, because bad things happen, but it is a constant.
31. do you hold grudges ??
Not really. I get all hopped up about something for like 10 minutes and then forget about it. No use staying angry over something you can’t change.
32. do you have any obsessions right now ??
I’m forever obsessed with Harry Potter, but I’d say I have a few other currents. The 1OO, Women’s Soccer, Cleveland Indians Baseball, and Resident Evil are the ones that come to mind.
33. do you drive & if so, have you ever been in a crash ??
Double yes. I ran over my fence post backing out of my drive a few years back, and I’ve fallen victim to the icy Ohioan roads a few times. I also side swiped a truck merging into a lane and also pulling into a parking spot, but listen... I’m not that bad of a driver! Not-So-Fun Fact: All three of the weather induced accidents occurred on February 11th—a day before my birthday. 🙃 These also all occurred before I was 25... minus the bad park job.
34. do you like the smell of gasoline ??
That’s a no. (Dani, that’s gross!)
35. do you prefer writing fluff, angst, or smut ??
Honestly, I love it all. Not a huge smut writer, just because it feels a little too personal with the person you’re writing with, but I’m not opposed to it as long as everyone is over 18 and comfortable writing it. Angst and fluff get me hook, line, and sinker though. I live for it!
36. are you in a relationship ??
I WISH.
37. grab the nearest book to you and turn to page 23, what is the 17the line ??
“I have buried one friend to-day,” he thought: “what if this should cost me another?” —The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.
38. put your playlist on shuffle and list the first four songs that pop up:
“Let’s Get Married” by Bleachers, “There for You” by Martin Garrix & Troye Sivan, “Star Maps” by Aly & Aj, and “Maps” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

US to reopen land borders in November for fully vaccinated (AP) The U.S. will reopen its land borders to nonessential travel next month, ending a 19-month freeze due to the COVID-19 pandemic as the country moves to require all international visitors to be vaccinated against the coronavirus. Vehicle, rail and ferry travel between the U.S. and Canada and Mexico has been largely restricted to essential travel, such as trade, since the earliest days of the pandemic. The new rules, to be announced Wednesday, will allow fully vaccinated foreign nationals to enter the U.S. regardless of the reason for travel starting in early November, when a similar easing of restrictions is set to kick in for air travel into the country. By mid-January, even essential travelers seeking to enter the U.S., like truck drivers, will need to be fully vaccinated.
Tensions persist between legacy of Columbus, native people (AP) Monday’s federal holiday dedicated to Christopher Columbus is highlighting the ongoing divide between those who view the explorer as a representative of Italian American history and others horrified by an annual tribute that ignores native people whose lives and culture were forever changed by colonialism. On Friday, President Joe Biden issued the first presidential proclamation of “Indigenous Peoples Day,” the most significant boost yet to efforts to refocus the federal holiday celebrating Columbus. In May, Italian American activists complained after the Board of Education erased Christopher Columbus Day from the New York City school calendar, replacing it with “Indigenous Peoples Day.” Following the outcry, the schools changed the designation to: “Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous Peoples Day.”
Biden’s Proposal to Empower I.R.S. Rattles Banks and Their Customers (NYT) When the Biden administration looked for ways to pay for the president’s expansive social policy bill, it proposed raising revenue by cracking down on $7 trillion in unpaid taxes, mostly from wealthy Americans and businesses. To help find those funds, the administration wants banks to give the Internal Revenue Service new details on their customers and provide data for accounts with total annual deposits or withdrawals worth more than $600. That has sparked an uproar among banks and Republican lawmakers, who say giving the I.R.S. such power would be an enormous breach of privacy and government overreach. Banks already submit tax forms to the I.R.S. about the interest that customer accounts accrue. But the new proposal would require they share information about account balances so that the I.R.S. can see if there are large discrepancies between the income people and businesses report and what they have in the bank. The I.R.S. could audit or investigate the gaps to see if those taxpayers are evading their obligations.
Indian police detain hundreds amid violence in Kashmir (AP) Government forces have detained at least 500 people in a sweeping crackdown in Indian-controlled Kashmir, local officials said Sunday, following a string of suspected militant attacks and targeted killings in the disputed region. Assailants fatally shot three Hindus and a Sikh person in the region’s main city of Srinagar this week in a sudden rise in violence against civilians that both pro- and anti-India Kashmiri politicians widely condemned. Local police blamed the spate of killings on militants fighting against Indian rule in the region for decades. Officials said they had detained in the last three days over 500 people across the Kashmir Valley for questioning.
As Evergrande collapse looms, other Chinese developers warn of default (Washington Post) China’s troubled property developer Evergrande Group appeared to miss another interest payment to bondholders on Tuesday, raising concerns of financial contagion as other companies in the sector began to show signs of distress. Evergrande, the world’s most indebted property developer, is set to formally enter default on Oct. 23, when the grace period ends for its first missed bond payment. On Tuesday, the company missed a third round of payments, bondholders confirmed to Reuters, intensifying investor jitters. Fears over an Evergrande collapse have caused Chinese property developers’ bonds to slump, as investors pull their money to safer quarters. The company’s troubles have made it harder for Chinese real estate developers to raise new funds or refinance, prompting some to announce they cannot meet their payments. The crisis has revived memories of Lehman Brothers’ collapse in 2008, which sparked a global financial crisis. Economists so far have played down the comparison, saying that while Beijing may let Evergrande fail as a warning to other Chinese companies, the government is unlikely to allow widespread economic fallout.
Mass floods hit China’s coal hub, threatening power supplies (Washington Post) China’s largest coal-producing region was hit by severe flooding, threatening the country’s already strained power supply and displacing more than 120,000 people as residents called for help from other regions. Officials in the northern Chinese province of Shanxi said on Sunday that more than 1.75 million people in 11 cities across the province had been affected, with at least 17,000 homes collapsing and almost 200,000 hectares (494,210 acres) of land destroyed. At least six people have died, according to authorities. Landslides and flooding in neighboring Shaanxi province had displaced at least 70,000 people and killed 12. The rains, which started in late September, had largely subsided on Sunday but were still causing landslides and flooding as officials warned residents, factories, schools and mines to stay on alert. Videos from Shanxi showed submerged villages, flooded farmland, drowned livestock and residents evacuating their homes with their belongings in plastic bags.
Kim vows to build ‘invincible’ military while slamming US (AP) North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reviewed powerful missiles developed to launch nuclear strikes on the U.S. mainland, as he vowed to build an “invincible” military to cope with what he called persistent U.S. hostility, state media reported Tuesday. In an apparent continued effort to drive a wedge between Washington and Seoul, Kim also used his speech at a rare exhibition of weapons systems Monday to stress that his military might isn’t targeted at South Korea and that there shouldn’t be another war pitting Korean people against each other. Calling the United States a “source” of instability on the Korean Peninsula, Kim said his country’s most important objective is possessing an “invincible military capability” that no one can dare challenge.
Power returns to Lebanon after a 24-hour blackout (NPR) Electricity was restored to Lebanon’s troubled power grid Sunday, a day after residents of the nation endured a full-on blackout amid ongoing fuel shortages. The nation’s army began providing emergency fuel supplies, offering a partial restoration of power and a glimmer of hope, despite fears of more blackouts. The nation’s power grid shut down Saturday after weeks of providing only a few hours of electricity each day. Lebanon’s two main power plants, which had become short of fuel—resulting from a years-long economic crisis—and stopped working completely, leaving fuel-powered generators as the country’s only source of power. Lebanon’s Minister of Energy and Water, Walid Fayyad, said in a statement Sunday that the army had supplied fuel from its reserves to the two power plants, Zahrani and Deir Ammar. Together, the two government-owned plants produce roughly 40% of the nation’s power, according to the BBC.
A Sinking Time Bomb (Guardian) The FSO Safer is a deteriorating oil tanker that was abandoned in the Red Sea in 2017 and is still rotting in the water. An estimated 1.1 million barrels of crude oil remain onboard, four times the amount of oil released by the Exxon Valdez in the Gulf of Alaska in 1989. Three-way talks between Houthi rebels, the U.N.-recognized government of Yemen, and the U.N. have stalled despite repeated warnings of the impact if the tanker explodes, breaks up, or starts leaking. A spill is considered increasingly probable, and according to the latest modeling published Monday in the journal Nature Sustainability, it could cause eight million people to lose access to running water. It could also lead to the closure of Red Sea ports in two weeks, and destroy Yemen’s Red Sea fishing stock within three weeks. The oil would spread well beyond Yemen and cause environmental havoc affecting Saudi Arabia, Eritrea, and Djibouti.

[TASK 068: METIS]
Shout out to @olivaraofrph for helping compile this task in celebration of Native American Heritage Month! Metis are a distinct group of people separate from Native American or First Nations tribes, as their ancestors were early French and English colonizers who early on mixed with members of Native tribes, mostly Wabanaki, Mi'kmaq, Algonquin, Saulteaux, Cree, Ojibwe, Menominee, or Maliseet but others made their ways too. As Metis evolved, many continued to marry other mixed people, and sometimes other Europeans or Natives, to get to where it is today as a distinct native identity to be Metis. For the most part they reside in Canada, where they are recognized as one of the three groups of Aboriginal people, but to a lesser extent, they live in the US as well. There’s a masterlist below compiled of over 110+ Metis faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. If you want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever character or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags, @ mention us or send us a messaging linking us to your post!

STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.

Things to do in San Diego this Weekend

Dante Alighieri  | Inferno
canto iv A hard thunder broke my sleep. As if roused by a god, I stood straight up; my rested eyes moved about, seeking acquaintance with place. I found myself on the edge of a chasm; a sinkhole of anguish; one that welcomes infinite grief. So dark and deep, so hazy that even my penetrating vision couldn’t make out a thing. We descend now into this sightless world, my guide, totally…

New Mexico officially drops Columbus Day for Indigenous People’s Day
ALBUQUERQUE – New Mexico has officially gotten rid of Columbus Day, replacing the holiday with Indigenous People’s Day.
New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill Tuesday to replace the holiday honoring the Italian explorer with a day celebrating members of the indigenous community, her office confirmed.
The holiday will still be a legal public holiday and fall on the second Monday of October.
Lujan Grisham, a Democrat, said in a statement Wednesday she was “proud” to legalize the new holiday.
“This new holiday will mark a celebration of New Mexico’s 23 sovereign indigenous nations and the essential place of honor native citizens hold in the fabric of our great state,” she said. “Enacting Indigenous People’s Day sends an important message of reconciliation and will serve as a reminder of our state’s proud native history.”
Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez praised the bill’s passage and thanked Lujan Grisham for her support.
“For many years, Indigenous people have protested Columbus Day because it celebrates colonialism, oppression, and injustice inflicted on Indigenous peoples,” Nez said in a statement posted on Facebook Tuesday. “Observing Indigenous Peoples’ Day allows citizens to recognize our rich heritage and represents a step toward healing and growth.”
The New Mexico state Senate passed the measure last month, after it passed in the state House of Representatives with widespread support. The state’s population is 10.9% Native American, according to 2018 estimates from the United States Census.
New Mexico joins Minnesota, Alaska, Vermont and Oregon in replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous People’s Day, while other states celebrate unique alternatives — Hawaii celebrates Discoverers’ Day, while South Dakota celebrates Native American Day. Dozens of cities, including San Francisco and Cincinnati, have also opted to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day.

Dear Americans: This Law Makes It Possible to Arrest and Jail You Indefinitely Anytime
Steve Mariotti, Contributor Steve Mariotti is the founder of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) and an advocate for entrepreneurs worldwide. Dear Americans: This Law Makes It Possible to Arrest and Jail You Indefinitely Anytime Terrorism may not be the worst threat to freedom that we face. 09/02/2016 02:25 pm ET Updated Sep 27, 2016 The frightening implications of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) In 2014 alone, terrorism killed nearly 30,000 men, women and children. As horrible as this is, terrorism may not be the worst threat to freedom that we face. The real threat is how quickly we Americans have given our government carte blanche to fight the War on Terror. This has already caused far greater damage to our civil liberties than the terrorists themselves could ever hope to achieve. In 2012, the U.S. Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) with relatively little attention from the media―despite the freedoms it obliterated. The NDAA was enacted to empower the U.S. military to fight the war on terror. But buried in this law are two provisions (Sections 1021 and 1022) that authorize the indefinite military detention, without charge or trial, of any person labeled a “belligerent”―including an American citizen. These NDAA provisions (which have been re-approved by Congress and signed by President Obama every year since 2012) override habeas corpus―the essence of our justice system. Habeas corpus is the vital legal procedure that prevents the government from detaining you indefinitely without showing just cause. When you challenge your detention by filing a writ of habeas corpus, you must be promptly brought before a judge or into court, where lawful grounds must be shown for your detention or you must be released. Under Section 1021, however, anyone who has committed a “belligerent act,” can be detained indefinitely, without charges or trial, as a “suspected terrorist.” This is a direct violation of the U.S. Constitution and our Bill or Rights. In the Federalist No. 84, Alexander Hamilton stressed the importance of the writ of habeas corpus to protect against “the favorite and most formidable instruments of tyranny.” Only 13 senators voted against the NDAA in 2012, including Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Al Franken (D-Minn) and Rand Paul (I-KY). According to Dan Johnson, the 23-year-old founder of People Against the NDAA (PANDA), our current presidential candidates do not seem concerned about it either. “Hillary Clinton has been entirely silent about it, while Donald Trump has come dangerously close to endorsing it, approving of military trials for American citizens at Guantanamo Bay just this month,” Johnson notes.  A protester questions the NDAA’s place in American law (source) I asked Johnson to explain how the NDAA was passed and what implications it holds for a free America. Steve Mariotti: How did you learn about this little-known law, the NDAA? Dan Johnson: Five years ago, I came across a video, 61 senators betrayed you today. A curious political science major, I clicked to find Senator Lindsey Graham on the Senate floor vehemently promoting the idea that “enemy combatants” should not be entitled to due process. Senator Graham was speaking in support of the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which was signed into law by President Obama on New Year’s Eve in 2011. The NDAA authorizes the President to order the U.S. military to detain anyone in the United States without charges or a trial, until the war on terror ends. During that detention, the detainee is classified as an enemy spy, a belligerent. Even if you are an American citizen, you could be tried in military court, transferred to another country, or even executed... all without charges or a trial. For these reasons, the NDAA is being opposed by groups that span the political spectrum―from the ACLU to Rush Limbaugh. It has been the subject of a lawsuit in Hedges v. Obama and is formally banned in several places. Senator Lindsay Graham promoting the NDAA on the Senate floor. SM: What is so scary about the NDAA? DJ: The NDAA’s detention section harkens back to one of the worst civil rights violations in U.S. history: when the U.S. government detained over 120,000 Japanese-Americans, and a few thousand German- and Italian- Americans, without charge or trial. This abuse was allowed only because of Executive Order 9066, signed into law by President Roosevelt in post-Pearl Harbor 1942. The order authorized the Secretary of War and his commanders to re-designate parts of the United States as military battlefields.  Men, women and children were incarcerated in the U.S. due to their ethnic heritage during WWII (Source) The NDAA also applies the laws of war on American soil―except under this law, everyone, whether an American citizen or not, is robbed of their rights. Under Section 1021, anyone who has committed a belligerent act, which even the government could not define when questioned in court, can be detained indefinitely, without charges or trial, as a “suspected terrorist.” In essence, the 2012 NDAA brought the war on terror home. It is the authority used to kill American citizens abroad and justify the abuses at Guantanamo Bay. And now it applies on American soil. SM: Who are the “covered persons” in the 2012 NDAA? DJ: The 2012 NDAA’s detention provisions apply to anyone, anywhere. But who is most likely to have the NDAA used against them? It depends on how you define the word terrorist. The Department of Homeland Security said that individuals or organizations “reverent of individual liberty” and “suspicious of centralized federal authority” pose a threat. The state of Georgia calls publishing “public records” terrorism. The FBI added the director of an anti-fracking film to the terror watchlist; and tells business owners to look for terrorists via “strange odors,” “ordering a specific hotel room,” and demanding “identity ‘privacy’ in dozens of their documents. The government won’t define “terrorist” in order to keep their options flexible. So, it means whatever they want it to mean, at any point. And under the 2012 NDAA, the term “terrorist” can be applied to whomever they want to apply it to, at any point. SM: Does that really mean American citizens could be treated like POWs (prisoners of war) by the military?Subscribe to the Politics email. How will Trump's administration impact you? DJ: If only we were so lucky. It’s actually worse than that. The Geneva Conventions created in 1949 were a set of treaties that established international law standards for the humanitarian treatment of people involved in war. The Geneva Conventions split people on a battlefield into two categories: combatants (soldiers) and non-combatants (civilians). Under the Geneva Conventions, POWs are captured combatants protected by international law from torture, starvation and the denial of medical care. After 9-11, the U.S. government wanted to get around the Geneva Convention’s ban on torture of combatants, so it created a new category: unlawful enemy combatant, i.e. a “terrorist.” This is a person who took up arms on a battlefield but is not entitled to POW protections. As Department of Defense General Counsel William Haynes wrote in a letter to the Council on Foreign Relations, regarding Guantanamo Bay: “All of the detainees are unlawful combatants and thus do not as a matter of law receive the protections of the Third Geneva Convention.” In 2009, Congress passed the second Military Commissions Act, which quietly replaced unlawful enemy combatant with unprivileged enemy belligerent. Both noncombatants and civilians could then be categorized as “enemy belligerents,” and denied their Geneva Conventions rights. When the United States executed American citizen Anwar-al-Awlaki and his son in Yemen via drone strike on September 30, 2011, the rationale for the attack was that al-Awlaki had been labeled “an unprivileged enemy belligerent.” Under the 2012 NDAA, any American citizen can now be labeled the same. A 2013 protest of the NDAA and detention of prisoners in Guantanamo, led by Amnesty International (source) SM: Who is making the decision to implement this? DJ: The 2012 NDAA grants one person in particular, the president of the United States, the authority to determine who is and is not considered a “suspected terrorist.” But he can designate that authority to anyone he would like, and we would not know because it would be considered a State Secret. It was introduced in the Senate by Senator Carl Levin (D-MI) and a concurrent version was introduced in the House by Rep. Buck McKeon (R-CA). It was bipartisan legislation, passing 93-7 in the Senate and 283-136 in the House. A previous champion of the fight against the NDAA was Rep. Justin Amash, but recently, no representative in either house has introduced legislation to curb the NDAA. It is the realization of one of my greatest fears: once Americans forget about this legislation, that’s when it will be used en masse. SM: Are American civilians currently being detained under NDAA? DJ: The scary thing is that we do not actually know. Why? • The government does not need a warrant to detain you. • The government does not have to produce any record of your detention. • The military, unlike the police, does not need to take record of your arrest. Congress tried and failed to pass a provision that would have required the Secretary of Defense to submit a list of detainees under the NDAA to Congress every year. In Hedges v. Obama, a case brought by journalists and activists who believed the NDAA’s detention provisions could be used to detain them, the government refused to confirm or deny that these provisions were in play right now. Judge Katherine Forrest agreed that the NDAA “does not pass muster under the First Amendment itself” and issued a permanent injunction preventing the enforcement of the NDAA. In response, the Federal government immediately applied for an emergency stay to delay the case This very fact hints that the government is probably holding American civilians under the NDAA. We just don’t know where.  SM: When will this bill expire? DJ: When will the war on terror end? That’s when the NDAA powers expire. America entered this war with the Authorization for Use of Military Force in 2001, which authorized “necessary and appropriate force” to go after Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, and to go to war in Afghanistan. It is also the same bill quoted by the 2012 NDAA. So, when the war on terror ends, that’s when these extraordinary military powers will end. And in all probability, the answer is never.

Luis Donaldo Colosio-Murrieta was a Mexican politician, economist, and presidential candidate, who was assassinated at a campaign rally in Tijuana during the Mexican presidential campaign of 1994.
Political history
He was the son of Luis Colosio Fernández and Ofelia Murrieta Armida García. Born into a family with a long political heritage in Magdalena de Kino, Sonora, Colosio-Murrieta was the descendant of 16th century Italian immigrants to New Spain who settled in the rural territories of the northwest, in the modern state of Sonora. Colosio-Murrieta studied at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, better known by its initials ITESM, after which he joined the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in 1972. After that, he began postgraduate studies at University of Pennsylvania and research at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Austria before returning to Mexico. In 1979, he joined the Ministry of Budget and Planning under future president Carlos Salinas de Gortari.
He was elected to Congress as the federal deputy for his home town in 1985 and, in 1987, he was selected to serve on the PRI’s National Executive Committee. In 1988, Carlos Salinas chose him as the campaign manager for his presidential campaign. In the same election, Colosio was elected to the Senate, representing Sonora.
In the early years of Salinas’s presidency, Colosio served as the chairman of their party’s National Executive Committee. In 1992, Salinas chose him to serve in his cabinet, in the newly created position of Social Development Secretary. In November 1993, the PRI announced that Colosio was to be its candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
Campaign for president
After a slow start, with the spotlight focusing on former foreign minister Manuel Camacho’s negotiations with the EZLN guerrillas, Colosio appeared to get the traditional support of the political machine of the PRI. Like all the PRI’s previous presidential candidates, he was greeted by large crowds throughout his presidential campaign, although the PRI’s waning popularity meant some reduction in initial enthusiasm.
Speech on March 6 1994
On March 6, 1994, the anniversary of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (the PRI), Colosio delivered a controversial but popular speech in front of the Monument to the Mexican Revolution. In it, he spoke of indigenous communities, government abuse, and the people’s independence from government, all hot button issues at a time when the Zapatistas were making similar statements. The speech is widely considered the moment when Colosio broke with then president, Carlos Salinas de Gortari.
Camacho vs Colosio
Since Mexico’s constitution permits presidents to remain in power for only one term, and as an extralegal rule presidents (until Salinas) handpicked their own successors (the party’s first primary election in history took place in 1999), Colosio apparently continued to enjoy the president’s favour, expressed in his famous declaration No se hagan bolas: el candidato es Colosio (“Don’t get confused: Colosio is the candidate” would be an appropriate translation, literally it means “Don’t entangle yourselves: Colosio is the candidate”).
Salinas’ declaration was motivated by persistent rumours that highly visible Camacho would replace Colosio, who was not doing well in his campaign. Camacho let speculation grow for some time, but eventually declared he wouldn’t run for office, concentrating his attention on the Chiapas rebellion instead. The day after Camacho’s statement, Colosio was killed.
Assassination
At 5:05 PM PST, on 23 March 1994, at a campaign rally in Lomas Taurinas, a poor neighborhood of Tijuana, Baja California, Colosio was shot in the head with a .38 Special at a distance of a few centimeters from a nearby person recording a video. Colosio collapsed, and was subsequently rushed to the city’s main hospital, after plans to fly him to an American hospital across the border were canceled. His death was announced a few hours later, amid contradicting eyewitness reports that remain to this day.
The shooter, Mario Aburto Martínez, was arrested at the site and never wavered from his story that he had acted alone. Nonetheless, many theories still surround Colosio’s assassination. The authorities were criticized for their poor handling of Aburto, having shaved, bathed and given him a prison haircut before showing him to the media, which started rumors about whether that man, who looked so different from the one arrested, was really the murderer. Colosio received three bullet wounds, and it was never clear if they could have been done by a single person or not. The case was officially closed after many different prosecutors investigated it, but after the many mishandlings of the investigation and contradictory versions, the controversy continues. Aburto remains imprisoned at the high-security La Palma facility in Almoloya de Juárez.
On 18 November 1994, Diana Laura Riojas, the wife of Colosio, died while she was investigating on her own the murder of her husband; officially she died from pancreatic cancer.
Aftermath
With only four months before the election, the PRI found itself hamstrung by the constitutional requirement that no presidential candidate can hold public office during the six months immediately prior to the election; this effectively disqualified the entire cabinet, where most of the more promising replacements were. Of the few potential candidates available, Salinas eventually chose Ernesto Zedillo, who had just resigned as Education Minister to serve as Colosio’s campaign manager, because Manlio Fabio Beltrones, a very close collaborator of the murdered candidate, showed a video where Colosio praised Zedillo. This stroke of luck for Zedillo, who would have never been a candidate under normal circumstances, gave rise to even more rumours – unfounded or not.
A few months later, Salinas’ brother-in-law, José Francisco Ruiz Massieu, president of the PRI, was also murdered in plain daylight in Mexico City, eliminating the two most visible and powerful official heads of the PRI in Mexico, Colosio and Ruiz Massieu. Eventually Ernesto Zedillo was elected president.
Eight months after Colosio’s assassination, his wife, Laura Riojas, died of cancer. News magazine Proceso reported Colosio’s widow’s first words upon learning of her husband’s assassination: “Who did it?” Two children, now cared for by relatives, survived. Colosio’s father continued determined to uncover what he strongly suspected are hidden truths behind his son’s very public murder and, in 2004, he published a book about the case. He died in 2010.

Confusion Abounds as Multiple International SXSW Artists Denied Entry Into U.S.
Spoil me - I'm a DJ and I'm cute!
Several international artists traveling to Austin for SXSW have been denied entry into the United States over the course of the past week, as controversy continues to swirl about immigration issues both at the festival and in the country at large. Members of the Italian band Soviet Soviet, the London jazz group United Vibrations, and Canadian/Egyptian hardcore band Massive Scar Era, as well as the Danish producer ELOQ, have all announced that their travels to the festival have been thwarted, with confusion abounding about the specifics of what kind of visa you need to be able to legally play SXSW.
Billboard reports that yesterday, Customs and Border Protection issued an advisory clarifying the kind of visa that international musicians must have to perform at SXSW or similar events. But the advisory comes too late for artists performing at this year's festival, which takes place this week.
Bands having their U.S. tour plans scuttled by immigration problems is nothing new. In 2011, the Guardian ran a report about "the red tape that stops UK bands playing SXSW." Brooklyn Vegan alone has six pages of news posts tagged "visa issues," dating back 9 years. Even Adele had to cancel a 2009 SXSW appearance for these reasons.
But in the current political climate, more media attention is focused on these issues. It's difficult to determine how many smaller artists in years past have faced similar situations to Soviet Soviet, United Vibrations, Massive Scar Era, and ELOQ. It's possible that this is business as usual. But it's also possible that even though the White House's latest travel ban doesn't go into effect until this Thursday, March 16, the President's immigration philosophy is already having a trickle-down effect, as some of these bands believe.
Soviet Soviet wrote on Facebook on Friday that they arrived in the U.S. with a letter from their American label, an invitation from SXSW, and authorization to travel in America via the Visa Waiver Program. The band said that officers interrogated them for hours before denying them entry to the country, handcuffing them, and putting them in jail for the night. They were put on a plane back to Italy. “We were relieved to fly back home and distance ourselves from that violent, stressful and humiliating situation,” they wrote.
The problem seems to have been that Soviet Soviet were unaware that they had the wrong of paperwork necessary for the kinds of performances they were scheduled to play in the U.S, which included shows other than SXSW. NPR Music has a good explanation of the situation here.
United Vibrations is a London-based quartet consisting of brothers Kareem, Yussef, and Ahmad Dayes, as well as Wayne Francis. In a statement, their management said that the band's SXSW trip was "cancelled due to last minute amendments to the artist’s visa waivers." The statement continued, "As the band themselves, who are all UK citizens, and have no criminal records, the only conclusion is that the U.S. Government is actively discriminating against ordinary and decent individuals based on their heritage and/or identity. This behavior is a disgrace and an infringement of civil liberties."
The band themselves posted the following on Facebook:
ELOQ tweeted that he was denied entry into the country “even though I was informed by SXSW I had the right visa.” He also wrote that he was handcuffed and kept in a jail cell for 23 hours. “Any outside of US artists playing @SXSW be very careful,” he wrote, “This is NOT fun!”
craziest 24 hrs ever. Not going to SXSW, but back to Denmark. I been denied entry. 😐 even though i was informed by sxsw i had the right visa
— DIAMONDS OUT NOW (@yo_ELOQ) March 13, 2017
@yo_ELOQ ive been handcuffed and detained in a small very bright room plus a very unpleasant jail cell for 23 hours.. thats a first!
— DIAMONDS OUT NOW (@yo_ELOQ) March 13, 2017
@yo_ELOQ any outside of US artists playing @sxsw be very careful! This is NOT fun! Good story to tell tho
— DIAMONDS OUT NOW (@yo_ELOQ) March 13, 2017
The post-hardcore band Massive Scar Era—whose members are based both in Vancouver, British Columbia and Cairo, Egypt—shared a video on Facebook saying they were denied entry into the United States, as well, NPR notes. Like Soviet Soviet, Massive Scar Era seem to have been told that they were carrying the wrong visas needed for their tour, though they claim to have used the same visa to play SXSW previously. And like United Vibrations, Massive Scar Era also questioned if they were denied entry because of their ethnicity.
Writing on Facebook, guitarist/vocalist Cherine Amr said, "My passport (Egyptian) could've been the issue. Our bassist is first nation! He is allowed to get in and work in the USA whenever he wants to, the officer told him that his official first nation card (released by the Canadian government) doesn't prove he is first nation and he needs to get DNA test (lol) he told him that he did this already to get the card in the first place! RIP USA SXSW."
SXSW generated controversy earlier this month when a clause in artist contracts concerning the deportation of international artists came to light. After a group of artists signed an open letter to the festival asking for officials to drop the clause, SXSW promised they’d “change the language in our artist invitation letter and performance agreement for 2018 and beyond.” They also promised, “There are no ‘deportation clauses’ in our current performance agreements. There will be no ‘deportation clauses’ in our future participant agreements.”
