Old People Housed in Former Malls Afraid of the Sky

There is little denying that a vast amount of retail space is emptying during the coronavirus pandemic — 25,000 stores may close by the end of this year — all while the over-65 population is increasing by about 10,000 a day. So even though arena-like malls and strip shopping centers might never see another Sears, J.C. Penney or Lord & Taylor store, some are being transformed into something more interesting: comprehensive upscale retirement complexes.

The factors driving retail-to-housing transformation were set in motion years ago but have been accelerated by the pandemic. The demise of malls and shopping centers has also been amplified by the shift to online retailing in recent years.

The crisis in mainstream retailing has become an outsize challenge and opportunity for municipalities, real estate owners, managers and developers. More than 8,000 stores have closed so far in 2020, according to Coresight Research, after 9,500 shut down last year. Mall stalwarts like Bed Bath & Beyond, GNC, Pier One Imports, Men’s Wearhouse, and New York and Company are in various states of bankruptcy and reorganization. Department stores such as Neiman Marcus and Lord & Taylor are on a long list of retailers going through shutdowns.

Ellen Dunham-Jones, a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology, has researched the repurposing trend. Retail closings across the country have led to 400 proposals for retrofits, with some 315 projects completed or in progress. Notable examples include the Ridge House Apartments in Wheat Ridge, Colo.; the PathStone Skyview Park Apartments in Irondequoit, N.Y. (occupying an old Sears site); and Aljoya Thornton Place, on the former parking lot of the Northgate Mall in Seattle, which was one of the nation’s first regional shopping malls and is still in business.

Professor Dunham-Jones writes about Folkestone in “Case Studies in Retrofitting Suburbia,” her upcoming book with Prof. June Williamson of City University of New York. She noted that the complex, in addition to occupying a former retail site, took a more progressive turn in its design.

Seniors are increasingly demanding more activities and environmentally sensitive and walkable communities, rather than sequestered, gated or golf course developments that require driving everywhere, Professor Dunham-Jones found.

“Baby boomers don’t want to be isolated,” she added. “They want to be connected to the community.”...

Flying Saucers Invade Cincinnati! (Maybe)

Flying Saucers made headline news in Cincinnati on 7 July 1947. The term “unidentified flying object” or UFO had not even been invented when Terrace Park housewife, Betty Stollmaier, spotted two gleaming disks sailing northward. According to the Enquirer, she

“ . . . described the objects as ‘shiny silver plates’ about the size of phonograph records. The visible surfaces gave off brilliant reflected light but there was no sign of flame associated with jet propulsion, she said.”

Five years later, In response to thousands of such accounts, the Air Force created Project Blue Book. From 1952 until 1970, the Project Blue Book collected thousands of civilian reports of unidentified flying objects and shipped them to Wright Patterson Air Force Base for analysis. Eventually, Project Blue book issued a set of official findings best summarized as “How should we know?”.

Many Blue Book reports originated from Cincinnati and some of them make entertaining reading. You may enjoy kibitzing as the Air Force’s investigators attempt to make sense of some of the Cincinnati incidents.

A 5 October 1959 report from Deer Park described a silent, 150-foot-long, cigar-shaped craft with several windows, glowing from within. This vehicle drifted straight toward the 13-year-old observer and then vanished. The young man sent a handwritten affadavit describing all this to the Air Force. The official file includes an interesting footnote:

“Subsequent rpts fm the same witness indicates that he rpts any obj or light in the sky w/his own interpretation that they are ‘flying saucers’. There is also the strong probability that some of these rpts are imaginary.”

Then there was the housewife “active in church and community affairs,” who, in 1968, reported a flying saucer chasing an airplane just east of where Northgate Mall is now located. According to the questionnaire she filled out for the Air Force, she:

“Saw aeroplane in full moonlight with unround circle of light trailing plane, some distance behind plane.”

TWA Flight 128 had recently crashed on approach to the Greater Cincinnati Airport and this observer thought there was a connection:

“I was alarmed when I saw the seemingly saucer chasing the jet plane. (Guess it was a jet.) A jet plane had crashed and I thought that this plane or jet might be in danger. This was the reason I called our airport. I thought this might be the reason some jets crash.”

It appears that this “seemingly saucer” was a small Cessna airplane towing an electric advertising sign. The Air Force found a local pilot who towed such signs and Blue Book investigators were able to match his flight schedules with several reports of unidentified flying objects.

Reading some Cincinnati UFO reports, you can just imagine the Air Force officers pulling their closely cropped hair out. A good example is provided by an advertising manager for Dubois Chemicals on 18 July 1957. Apparently located somewhere near Mount Healthy (Blue Book reports are redacted to remove names, addresses and telephone numbers), he reported that eight observers had witnessed two bright blue lights, trailed by a bright red light. Beyond that? Not much. A handwritten note in the file expresses the investigating officer’s frustration:

“With exception of statement that he saw UFO, he can give us nothing (or remembers nothing) on the size, shape, elevation, direction, and other basic data – generally remembered or given by UFO observers. Also contradicts himself.”

The questionnaire itself is scribbled on like a grade school essay. At one point the questionnaire requests a drawing of the object. The observer supplied only a weirdly curved line, almost as though his pen had accidentally slipped. The Air Force investigator wrote next to it, “Is this it?”

When a set of photographs landed on the Project Blue Book desk in 1967, the Air Force immediately sent off a questionnaire to the photographer in Pleasant Ridge. They wanted, obviously, to know more about this amazing sighting, despite the photographer’s admission that he was only 11½ years old:

“I am sending two pictures of what I saw Wednesday, Sept. 20, 1967, about 4:00 p.m. at [redacted], Cincinnati, Ohio, taken with a small camera. To me it looked about as big or a little bigger than a station wagon.”

The Air Force waited, and waited, and waited. Additional information and the original negatives were not forthcoming, so the file was closed. The typed summary merely notes that no requested information was submitted. A handwritten note suggests a little more skepticism:

“Photos are very similar to a Frisbee.”

The Air Force was less eager to dismiss a 5 April 1966 report from a Catholic priest teaching at Roger Bacon High School. On his way to church around 6:06 a.m., the priest reported:

“There, to the west, was a very bright orange object which appeared to hover 2,000 to 3,000 feet above the ground. It had the shape of a pancake, but thicker in the center with a definite bulge top-side.”

The priest himself was at first skeptical:

“Naturally, I thought it was a plane at first – banking and catching the early rays of the sun. Many things went through my mind . . . but especially the fact that, so I thought, the sun hadn’t risen enough by that time to reflect off the object – hence the object must be its own light source.”

The Air Force decided it must be sunlight reflecting off a normal aircraft.

The Norwood Searchlight incident of 1949, probably the most famous UFO recorded from Cincinnati, never made it into Project Blue Book.Most Cincinnati reports got filed as flights of birds, the moon, light reflecting from clouds, meteors, “other (confusing data),” and, of course, weather balloons.

Northgate Station

Today was a short bike ride and a chance to check out some recent changes to a middle-aged part of north Seattle. I rode past Green Lake and up through the Maple Leaf neighborhood to the park that’s built on top of the reservoir. I love the views back toward Mount Rainier and downtown, though no photos today.

Then it was downhill to the Northgate area, where everything seems a work in progress. The classic 1960s shopping mall is gradually turning into the center of a 2020s urban village. The mall itself has been rebranded as ‘Northgate Station,’ reflecting its position as a transit hub on the new light rail line. The central part of the old mall is gone, replaced by the ‘Kraken Community Iceplex.’ Three skating rinks, a team store, and a Starbucks. Posters hanging on construction fences, and the website for Northgate Station, show a future with parks and public space, residential high rises, new and different commercial space, and of course, parking garages.

The surrounding area is changing, too. Thornton Place has been around for a long time now (I like the way they built it around a somewhat artificial and highly plumbed stretch of Thornton Creek) but the remaining parts of the old mall and big blocks of the area east of 5th Avenue are getting rebuilt. The Link Light Rail station has been operating since early October, though there is still much work going on around it (including construction of the line that will continue farther north). The elegant new John Lewis pedestrian bridge over I-5 between the station and North Seattle College is now done and provided me a nice way to cross to the west side of the highway and then loop south back to Green Lake.

(I was up here, without the bike, a couple of days earlier and the pictures of the ‘iceplex’ were taken then.)

The station joins a network of vibrant stations with public art and sustainable design that connect to a diversity of neighborhoods in the seattle metropolitan area. The light rail system is the first major railway system in the united states to run on 100% carbon-neutral electricity.

Seattle, Washington – October 6, 2021 – LMN Architects celebrates the opening of the U District Station and the completion of the 4.3-mile Northgate Link Extension with three new light rail stations. The design of the 105,000-square foot station creates a unified transportation solution and offers a new gateway to the University of Washington campus.

Seattle’s University District is a bustling and eclectic mixed-use community situated directly between the city’s downtown core and the burgeoning neighborhoods to the north. With the University of Washington’s Seattle campus and numerous commercial enterprises creating a destination for thousands of students, workers, and visitors every day, this new station anticipates record numbers of riders in fulfilment of its pivotal role in Seattle’s urban evolution.

The U District Station, designed in collaboration with McMillen Jacobs Associates, offers pedestrians, cyclists, bus commuters and residents a highly functional, easy-to-use, and appropriately scaled transit hub conveniently located for their diverse activities.

Mark Reddington, Partner, LMN Architects, comments: “This project is a model of urban transportation infrastructure and relates to a complex of interconnected stations which we have been designing for Sound Transit over many years. Integrated into the urban fabric of Seattle, the U District Station and its associated public spaces, along with prominent use of color, art, and lighting, provided an opportunity to connect major urban mobility systems, integrated into the immediate neighborhood community.”

The U District Station is the first stop on the Northgate Link, a 4.3-mile light rail extension from the University of Washington Station on its way to points north. With the train platform located 85 feet below street level, the bulk of the station’s 105,000-square-foot area is below grade, served by two entrances on Brooklyn Avenue NE between NE 43rd Street and NE 45th Street. The balance of the above-grade site accommodates a future high-rise transit-oriented development project to be constructed on top of the station. Each of the two entries provides elevators, escalators, and stairs to the trains below. The north entrance lobby serves riders heading to and from the adjacent Neptune Theater and mixed-use neighborhood, as well as a major Metro bus transfer hub on NE 45th Street. The south lobby gives pedestrians a direct link to the UW campus a few blocks east. Creating a pedestrian-friendly experience, the sidewalks and streets facing the entrances meet Green Street standards, with ample landscaping, pedestrian lighting, seat walls, and a bike lane. For bike commuters, both entrance lobbies offer bicycle storage and racks.

This bright, open, and easy-to-navigate station is expected to serve thousands of daily riders. Above ground, black granite cladding establishes the project’s legibility within an increasingly dense and varied urban environment. When the future transit-oriented development completes the block, the entry structures will integrate effectively into the larger urban setting, maintaining their Sound Transit identity.

Daniel N. Adams, Corporate Development Officer, McMillen Jacobs Associates, comments: “Working with LMN Architects throughout the design, construction, and commissioning was extremely rewarding. LMN collaborated seamlessly in what was, at the time, the first use of Building Information Modeling for the agency. We have designed and built quite a few underground stations, and the completion of the new U District Station is a good example of what we can build for the advancement of Seattle as the metropolitan area continues to grow and expand into the new century.”

From the north and south lobbies, patrons descend through the escalator and stair tubes to a mid-level open landing, placed within a tall voluminous central space, and continue to the train platform below via open escalators or an open stair. The landing appears to float above the angled cross-bracing elements and is offset to the east. The offset, along with artwork and video installations on the west wall, create a design asymmetry that will help to define north-south wayfinding and directionality on the platform. While passengers wait for their trains, they will experience “Fragment Brooklyn” by Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo of Lead Pencil Studio. The artwork is a collection of sculptural pieces formed from stainless steel woven wire fabric into architectural appendages containing video screens depicting domestic life.

Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo, Lead Pencil Studio, comment: “This station artwork references the little-known original platting of this neighborhood as the city of Brooklyn, WA. Intended to be similar in every way to the namesake New York borough, the early development model never took hold except that the street name of Brooklyn Avenue remained. Fragment Brooklyn is an imaginary urban streetscape of building parts woven from metal mesh with films that detail quiet moments of domestic life and U-District history. The scale of the artwork, at almost 300 ft long, is a response to the cathedral size volume of the subterranean station and provides an opportunity for riders to make a visual connection to the increasingly urban context of life above ground.”

The large central volume is defined by a white corrugated metal ceiling and canted walls that conceal essential back-of-house functions. Wayfinding is enhanced by overhead aluminum tubes containing lighting, speakers, and other systems, which begin at the north and south station entries and trace a path to the platform. Two different colors aid passengers in orienting north and south: orange for north and blue for south.

Howard Fitzpatrick, Principal, LMN Architects, comments: “When we began the design, we were conscious of the large-scale transportation and infrastructure needs, but more importantly the neighborhood and its relationship with the urban framework. The station will bring together commuters, travelers, and the local community to experience the city in a new urban ‘room’ infused by the life around the site. We are extremely proud to be a part of this effort to help improve public infrastructure and support Seattle’s urban evolution.”

The U District Station embodies LMN’s transit design principles: urban legibility, simple form, intuitive wayfinding, and memorable public space. It contributes another innovative, visionary station to Sound Transit’s growing light rail network. LMN Architects is recipient of the 2016 AIA National Architecture Firm Award and is widely recognized for its design of projects that support smart, sustainable cities. The firm has successfully completed more than 700 projects across North America, including the double LEED Platinum Vancouver Convention Centre West in Vancouver, Canada; Cleveland Convention Center & Civic Core in Cleveland, Ohio; Tobin Center for the Performing Arts in San Antonio, Texas; and the recently completed Mukilteo Multimodal Ferry Terminal in Mukilteo, Washington. As one of the first post-war suburban shopping centers in the US, the Northgate Mall in northern Seattle defines classic mall architecture.

Its architect, John Graham Jr., pioneered the dumbbell, big-box shape for malls, in which two rows of stores face each other and two department stores anchor each end. Graham also gave Northgate Mall a grocery store (which later became a food court) and a huge parking lot. In the decades that followed, malls around the country copied Northgate's layout, which became the model for most American malls throughout the late 20th century.

This design may not be working in the 21st century, however. Hundreds of malls and thousands of mall-based stores have shuttered in the past two decades, and many more may close within the next 10 years. One of the most recent retailers to go down is the jewelry chain Claire's, which filed for bankruptcy in March. Sears also said Thursday that it's closing 63 stores, on top of the more than 160 locations it has already shuttered this year. Both Sears and Claire's have blamed plummeting mall shopper traffic for their declines.

Traditional malls need to transform themselves to stay alive, and many are making changes to attract more business — including Northgate.

Developers are now turning many of the mall's parking spaces into a light rail station, which will connect the neighborhood to downtown Seattle. Other parts of the lot have been turned into LEED-certified apartments, senior housing, a medical center, more retail space, and a bioswale that keeps runoff away from the nearby creek.

Malls of the future have an opportunity to fulfill other community needs besides commerce, June Williamson, a City College of New York architecture professor and the author of "Retrofitting Suburbia," told Business Insider.

"Northgate [Mall] evolved as the neighborhood around it — which was mostly built in the '50s, '60s, and '70s — did," she said. "People are tired of the traditional mall."

Things to Do in College Station, TX

College Station, Texas is a thriving metropolis located in eastern Texas. It is home to the largest campus of Texas A & M University. On the campus, there is the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum; houses a replica of the famous Oval Office and a historic sloping mound of the Berlin Wall. The Sanders Corps of Cadets Center exhibits memorabilia and historic weapons and the College Station City Park Zoo features a collection of animals.

In addition to the major venues, there are many minor venues that attract local residents and tourists on an annual basis. One of these is the peach creek vineyards. This community is in College Station, Texas, just outside of Houston. The peach creek vineyards offers a variety of activities for residents and visitors to enjoy. Visitors are often greeted by the scent of sweet musk and the taste of ripe peach orchards.

Another popular family fun activity in College Station, Texas is enjoying horseback riding on the grand station entertainment trail. This trail offers a challenging path for equestrians, including an eight-mile loop, plus one additional twenty-one mile long segment that travel through the woods. The trail also includes portions which are staked into the ground for both safety and horseback riding enjoyment. The trail makes for a wonderful afternoon excursion for the whole family, or a nice evening out for two or more guests.

The Museum of Fine Arts in College Station, Texas also offers a number of family fun activities and events on a regular basis. The Museum of Fine Arts was built in 1940 and serves as a national resource center for visual and performing arts. The Museum has two main buildings, which house the museum itself and other buildings surrounding it which house local businesses and offices. Many of the exhibits in the museum are designed and housed in the historic brick and sandstone buildings.

Other popular things to do in college station include things to do at the numerous Northgate Shopping Center locations. Located on Golf Road across from the tennis courts at the Northgate Station Mall, the shopping center offers a large selection of food and merchandise, public restrooms, ATM machines, movie theaters, movie tickets, toys, and other things to do with all ages and skill levels. Northgate's most popular shopping center is located between Riverside and Main streets.

Tourists can take in a display of quilts, pottery, American Indian tools and jewelry, antique maps, prints, photographs, and much more in the museum. The Kyle Field Museum is also in college station, which is the first major natural history museum to be established in the state of Georgia. The museum displays a vast collection of artifacts, such as dinosaur bones, which have been found in different parts of Georgia and in several southern states.

Tourists can enjoy the museum, which features a cafe and restaurant that are open to the public on certain days of each week. Some events, such as the Peach Blossom celebration, are held at the end of May or the beginning of June. Other notable festivals in college station include the Georgia Peach Festival, the Georgia Tomato Festival, and the Georgia Peach Grandparents Day Festival. While these festivals are great for visitors and locals, they are not the best things to do in college station during the summer months. This is due to the fact that there are very few festivals in the summer due to the high demand for tickets.

One of the best things to do in college station is to check out all the golf courses in the area. You can visit The Georgia Golf Association, which is the only professional organization of golf courses in Georgia. There are many country clubs in the area that serve different purposes. Country clubs are great for socializing, while golf clubs are great for getting some practice on your swings and putting. If you are trying to plan a family getaway, you should definitely consider going to College Station and seeing all of the exciting things that the town has to offer.

24 — Let’s Go to the Mall

“New Oldsmobiles are in early this year.��

Soon enough, all malls will be dead malls.

A dead mall is vacant and has lost its “anchor store” — the retail behemoths like JC Penny, Sears, Nordstrom, who get rent discounts to drive foot traffic that supports the smaller stores. KMart, Alexander's, Montgomery Ward, Woolworth's, Marshall Field's, Filene's, and Hecht's. Dead, more or less, all of them! Did you know that, since 2010, we’ve been in something called a “retail apocalypse?” My friend’s girlfriend just lost her job at Barney’s because Barney’s closed. For good! Wikipedia assures me that the quantity of malls grew twice as fast as population over a 40-year period, but, cmon: I asked a robot that lives in my house to reorder diapers today. I think it’s no tjust about real estate.

And then I see the list of defunct department stores and am immediately saddened, of course — dicking around in the aisles of a Penny’s while my mom helped my brother try on church shoes is a memory that sticks. The promise of free-sample-chicken in the food court and an Electronics Boutique perusal run to look at the new video games sounds as compelling today as it was in the 1990s, but am I sad malls are done? Really?

Maybe shopping malls aren’t great. Maybe the not-so-subtle message in the Dixie Square chase scene — that a bemused appreciation of the mall is best countered by commerce’s absolute, literal destruction — is the right one. Sure, fuck Amazon forever (unless you have a baby, and then, man, it’s nice for diapers and wipes), but was the mall ever a community center? It’s hard to pick apart.

Loitering, browsing, sneaking snacks into movies, first surreptitious attempts at shoplifting — their real value in my life is nostalgic. Amazon destroyed a thing that already was destroying the good version of shopping. Consider that Dixie Square Mall was a dead mall before The Blues Brothers and Landis rented it for filming.

And consider, for a minute, the violent history of Dixie Square, which closed after only 12 years, as the surrounding area of Harvey quickly descended into blight and crime. Three murders across the first few years of the ‘70s, followed by disrepair, employee theft and shoplifting led to it closure in 1978.

After the movie shot there, the complete destruction of the property just ... congregated. Caretakers couldn’t clean it up. Drug dealers began to use its carcass for their activity. A police station AND juvenile court very close by weren’t able to tilt the scales. Weather damage and tree overgrowth took hold. The homeless found it. In the early ‘90s, it was the site of another murder.

The mall is everything that unfettered growth at all costs — the new American expansion — can ruin. Like Jane Jacobs’ criticisms of the Garden or Radiant City, malls are communal but not containing a community. Organized but to no purpose. Public but providing no utility or function outside the commercial. Left alone, the enclosed suburban space becomes itself dangerous, as we see.

Over Christmas, I went to Seattle with my wife, and we visited two malls, one in Lake Forest Park that has a still-functioning BASEBALL CARD store, along with a sprawling three-restaurant food court that opened into a tremendous indie bookstore, replete with massive kids’ section, swarming with children — and I’ll be damned if it didn’t seem like a declining-but-vibrant still-going quirk, hungover from decades prior. It was wholesome and lovely. And then we went to Northgate Mall, preparing for its overhaul/facelift, but completely abandoned. Shuddered breweries, blocked walkthroughs, dead ends. It had, only a few years prior, been bustling in the day or so after Christmas, full of gift-card shoppers and gift-receipt returners, and the takeaway in December 2019 was nothing shy of “totally freaky.”

I guess, like we discussed earlier on the blog, anything is better than nothing, and so we’ll mourn the demise of the shopping mall — every one reflected the character of its community, maybe not because of their unambitious architecture, but in what those communities said and did and bought in those malls — commerce can tell a story, even if that story doesn’t have meaning. In the meantime, Dixie Square Mall was revealed to be full of asbestos, and then began a 7-year journey to force its eventual demolition in 2012. Its story is not dissimilar from the whole story of American commerce, labor and land exploitation, and the decline of the middle class, but, much like Landis, celebrating gleefully in its destruction, we will not mourn it.

Old people in defunct shopping malls afraid of the sky

he nation’s senior population is in desperate need of more affordable housing, particularly as the COVID-19 pandemic has disproportionately plagued senior communities. With this need expected to increase alongside aging populations, some developers are looking to abandoned shopping mall sites for innovative opportunities.

Shopping malls nationwide struggled long before the restrictions of COVID-19, as anchor stores like Macy’s have teetered on the edge of bankruptcy. For more than a decade, demolished mall sites have been turned into everything from medical centers and sports team training facilities to Amazon warehouses, car dealerships and biotech lab spaces, while others have sat vacant.

"If you want to be located in close-in suburbs, this is where the land is" for developers, said June Williamson, chair and associate professor of architecture at the City College of New York.

Williamson pointed to one of the country's oldest malls — Seattle's Northgate Mall, originally built in 1950 — as an example of how this land can be repurposed for housing: The site has undergone construction for the development of a high-density residential building, hotel, planned transit center and National Hockey League center, among other facilities.

Meanwhile, the mall’s satellite parking lot was turned into senior housing dubbed Aljoya Thornton Place, said Williamson. That housing describes itself as an "urban village" for people who "love the energy of urban life but don't want to live downtown" — a big draw for healthy older residents when looking for a place to live.... Rating Methodology

Health Inspections Every year, the government assigns inspectors to conduct a formal review of nursing homes for regulatory purposes to meet the mandates outlined for Medicare and Medicaid, this aims to measure and improve the safety of residents across providers. Facilities may also be inspected when complaints are submitted or based on a reported incident. When noncompliance is identified, the facility is served a citation that indicates which regulation that was identified, along with the severity of the incident. Nursing homes are subsequently required to execute a program of resolution in order to meet compliance. Some scenarios require enforcement actions to be applied, such as a civil monetary penalty or withholding of payment(s), to incentivize resolution in a timely manner. Penalties Facilities are applied 2 types of penalties due to non-compliance / accumulation of incidents. Civil penalties are monetary fines that may be applied to a facility based on citations / infractions identified during a review. The severity of a penalty is defined primarily by the size and frequency of the infraction. Quality of Residence Care There are 3 types of resident care ratings, but for this exercise, we primarily focused on the overall quality measure rating. The quality measures (QMs) include 17 data points that are derived from clinical information reported by the respective nursing home and also from Medicare claims data submitted for payment. Ratings are calculated for the QM domain using the 4 most recent quarters for which data are available. A nursing home receives points contingent on performance on each measure (weighting distribution is not equal). Staffing Staffing research is submitted regularly by the facility and is adjusted for the requirement of the facilities residents. For each of registered nurse staff and total staffing, a 1 - 5 rating is applied according to definitions established for each category. These ratings are subsequently combined to assign an overall staffing rating. As an example, to get an overall staffing rating of 5 stars, nursing homes must earn a rating of 5 stars for both registered nurses and total staffing. Nursing homes could also be assigned a 1 star rating should they not have a registered nurse on-site daily, and do not submit staffing data, or which the data cannot be verified.

This Kettle Won’t Settle – North Carolina Week of Solidarity, July 20th-27th

An international call has been put out to organize a Week of Solidarity with J20 Defendants. July 20th marks six months from the initial arrests during Donald Trump’s inauguration. In that time, what began with the mass arrest of over two hundred people and a single count of felony rioting (which is extreme in its own right) has developed into a massive federal case of state repression. A superseding indictment returned by a grand jury on April 27th filed eight felony charges against every defendant in the case: conspiracy to riot, riot, incitement to riot, and five counts of property destruction. The total maximum sentencing for all eight charges amounts to over 75 years in federal prison. This is an effort by the prosecution to coerce as many pleas as possible from co-defendants. Despite this, nearly two hundred defendants in the case have secured trial dates over the course of three status hearings this past June, and are committed to fighting these charges in court.

Here in North Carolina, our Week of Solidarity will be a platform to launch #DropJ20, a campaign targeted at US Attorney Channing Phillips to have the charges dropped. Our intention is to generate as much visibility around the case as possible, and to apply pressure on those with the power to end this political persecution!

To that end, we’ve planned several reproducible actions that can be organized in similar regions with a high density of supporters who want to get active in the case. We hope that as many defense committees and regional support crews as possible recreate this platform for their own cities, and modify them as necessary. Thursday, July 20th – Coordinated Day of Beautification Actions: To kick-start the Week of Solidarity, we’re asking that as many organizations, affinity-groups and individual comrades as possible plan and coordinate a beautification action that calls attention to the J20 mass arrest, the political nature of the charges, and the #DropJ20 campaign. These can include wheat–pastings, banner-drops, projections, etc. While we hope that actions like these take place throughout the entire week of solidarity, by coordinating these autonomous actions to take place on the same day their effectiveness and visibility can be maximized. Thursday, July 20th – Anarchists on the Silver Screen @ Firestorm Books & Coffee (610 Haywood Rd • Asheville, NC 28806): A movie marathon to kick off the week of solidarity with J20 defendants. We will be showing two short films and a fun full length movie – featuring the latest Trouble episode, the debut of Channel (A) – Episode 2, & What To Do In Case of Fire. It’ll be a time folx! Bring donations for defendants, your friends, and cozy pillows for an evening of riotous laughter and cinematographic subversion.

Friday, July 21nd – Letter-Writing/Call-In Party @ Northgate Park (300 West Club Blvd • Durham, NC 27704): To increase the public pressure to drop the charges, we’re organizing a letter-writing/call-in party at 6:00PM. We’ll be enjoying BBQ and writing letters to US Attorney Channing Phillips to demand that they drop the charges. We’ll also be calling in to Rochelle Howard at the Office of Police Complaints, which has funded an investigation into the misconduct and brutality of the MPD on Inauguration Day. The investigation is being delayed until October, 2017, one month before the earliest trial dates are set. This investigation has to happen now! With enough political pressure, we can make both of these goals happen!

Saturday, July 22nd – Benefit Show @ the Back House (Riverview & Clifton • Asheville, NC): A benefit house show is being held at the Back House at 6PM as a fundraiser for the NC J20 Defense Fund! Mutual Jerk, Poor Excuse and Clyde Conwell will be performing, along with a secret special guest! The night will also be a bakesale and BBQ, and folks are asked to bring $5-10 for donations!

Sunday, July 23rd – J20 Defendants Support Group: One large part of this process is dealing with the trauma, namely large amounts of stress and anxiety that comes with it. We want to support each other through this and find ways to make this journey more tolerable for all of us. To increase our resiliency against repression, we’re organizing a defendant-led support group in the park (no snitch-phones allowed!) to share our experiences with each other in a judgement-free space.

Monday, July 24th – A Feast for Friends: Despite the trauma of state repression, this case has produced a plenum of beautiful relationships and affinities; supporters have sprung out of the woodwork that have dedicated their time, lives, and emotional labor to help complete strangers endure these trying times. It’s time to return the favor! Defendants are organizing a free dinner for their defense committees, legal aids and community supporters! If defendants and supporters alike are going to make it through to the end of this process, we need to come together for more than just status hearings and legal calls, we need levity, friendship, and a good bit of fun to replenish our spirits!

Tuesday, July 25th – Benefit Show @ the Nightlight (405 1/2 W Rosemary St • Chapel Hill, NC 27516): The Nightlight presents Institute, a punk show benefit for J20 defendants! Headlining the night will be Drugcharge and Decoy, and doors open at 9PM! All money raised at this event will also be going to the NC J20 Defense Fund, and they’re also asking that folks bring $5-10 to donate as cover for the show.

Wednesday, July 26th – Resisting State Repression, A Press Conference @ Durham Central Park (501 Foster St • Durham, NC 27701): To round out the week, we’ll be holding a press conference as the Durham Central Park at 12:00PM, open to the press and to the entire community of Durham. The conference will present background and updates of the case and its development up to this point, an overview of how this case fits into a larger national tapestry of state repression and violence, and the unveiling of our #DropJ20 campaign.
