rating Digimon Survive VA cast based on how their hypothetical character songs would sound like vocal-wise, by someone who is both a VA nerd and quite pedantic about singing.
prompted by a conversation about Digimon character songs I had with @supermacaquecool
Takuma - Amasaki Kouhei: he's actually a pretty decent singer and can sound dynamic when needed, but can sing in character well too, so I think Takuma is going to sound like Takuma just fine
Minoru - Abe Atsushi: a decent singer (even though sometimes he has the problem of singing flat, but it's ok it's not like Minoru is supposed to be a great singer), his default singing voice sounds exactly like Minoru so it's going to be fine
Aoi - Hondo Kaede: another decent singer. she has a lovely sweet and bright tone (imagine a Disney princess-y tone) that makes her singing pleasant to listen to even when she isn't technically impressive.
Ryo - Azakami Youhei: a decent singer, IMO much better than all the people mentioned before, but also his singing voice sounds very far from Ryo's speaking voice LMAO idk how well he'd sing as Ryo...
Saki - Takahashi Minami: a decent singer if not for her tone problem (nasal voice; though that's more a me problem). however, she's technically sound, a better singer than most of the cast. it's great that her actual singing voice sounds so much like Saki, so she'd have no problem singing in character while also making the song enjoyable to listen to.
Shuuji - Hirose Yuuya: an actually great singer with singing techniques. here's the thing though-- I refuse to believe Shuuji can sing, but the VA can't pretend he can't sing, so... yeah. he has a penchant for showing off whenever he's given the chance. will evoke the (funny) reactions people have for Jou's character song in tri.
Kaito - Takanashi Kengo: another great singer who actually knows how to sing, but the "Kaito can sing" headcanon is universal so that's okay. not as show-y as Hirose Yuuya thankfully? problem is his singing voice doesn't really sound like Kaito kahsdjdh (something something muscle memory making it hard for trained singers to change their tone)
Miu - Watada Misaki: a decent singer, someone around Hondo Kaede's level I'd say. her singing voice sounds exactly like Miu's speaking voice so it's going to be fine.
Miyuki - Kohara Konomi: …well, you've heard her sing. she's an okay singer IMO, pretty ironic that I actually think she's one of the weakest singers among the VA cast, but her tone works for the character and it's all that matters in the end for character songs kahsjkdh (also IMO her technical imperfections work for the character's physical age)
Professor - Yamaji Kazuhiro: haven't heard him sing, and I don't think he'll sing ever kahdsjdh
Agumon - Sakamoto Chika: she can do Agumon singing just fine, no need to worry.
Falcomon - Miyazaki Hiromu: haven't heard him sing
Labramon - Fujii Yukiyo: this isn't going to make sense to most people but she sounds like Labramon after 1 year of vocal training. someone around Takahashi Minami's level (including the tone problem, but that's irrelevant in character songs so kahdsjkdh)
Kunemon - Arai Ryouhei: haven't heard him sing
Floramon - Shimoji Shino: another problem because she's too good of a singer to be singing in character. not diva-level but certainly she doesn't sound like Floramon when singing.
Lopmon - Oozora Naomi: just imagine Lopmon singing, it'd sound exactly like that. not a great singer but she'd sound fine as Lopmon.
Dracumon - Nemoto Kouta: haven't heard him sing
Shakomon - Takano Asami: eh… she's fine. nothing to write home about tbh. whether she can sound in character as Shakomon or not is something we have yet to find out though.
Renamon - Suzuki Masami: an actual singer singer (not the idol seiyuu sort--I actually knew her first as a singer so to find out she was a VA too was a surprise for me). I'll leave it at that.
Gabumon - Yamaguchi Mayumi: I'm sure at least 90% of you have heard her sing as Gabumon. if not, here.
