Florentine Butter Chicken with Burst Tomatoes and Basil

Adapted from this recipe, posted for 007 Fest 2023, @mi6caferecipes

This is a fantastic dinner which serves many people and is easy to scale up to serve more...provided you have a big enough pan. It's also very versitile and you can swap out a lot of things, like different herbs, or swap the cherry tomatoes for canned tomatoes if you want more of a sauce.

Ingredients

2-3 tbsp olive oil

4 tbsp butter

2 sprigs fresh basil

lime frost sea salt

430g (ish) cherry tomatoes

50g plain flour, seasoned with lawry's

1 egg, beaten

2 skinless chicken breasts, sliced in half to be thinner

3 cloves garlic, roughly chopped

425g freshly cooked angel hair pasta

You'll also need two shallow bowls, a bowl for tomatoes, and a big frying pan. I use my 12 inch with high sides. But you can do less chicken to make it fit in your biggest pan.

Directions

Heat the oil and 2 tbsp of the butter in a frying pan over a high heat.

Add the basil, tomatoes, and season with sea salt. Cook for about 5-6 minutes, until the tomatoes begin to soften but are still holding their shape.

Tip into a bowl.

Start some water boiling for the pasta.

Put the egg and flour separately into two shallow bowls.

Dip the chicken first in egg, then in the seasoned flour. (If you feel like getting more plates dirty, you can do this to all chicken before putting any in the pan. I do it in conjuction with step 7.)

Heat 1 tbsp butter in the pan and when melted, fry the chicken for 3-4 minutes on each side, basting the chicken in the browned butter if there's enough.

Probably midway through that, your water has started boiling. Cook your pasta according to directions given on pasta.

When the chicken looks just about cooked, return the tomatoes to the pan with the remaining butter and garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes.

Remove the chicken from the pan and serve to plates. (Or forget literally every time you make this to take the chicken out.)

Add the pasta to the pan to absorb the flavours for a minute or so.

Serve the linguine & tomatoes to your plates with the chicken, scatter with more basil if desired.

Contrary to popular belief, the second in command of Q branch is not R

R leads the floor - R is the Q branch minion with the best inter personal skills. That’s why everyone is always communicating with R. That’s why R is the one in-charge when Q isn’t around. In that sense, R is the pseudo second in command.  

But when Q isn’t around, R isn’t the one managing the technological fort. It’s a hectic enough job managing the whole branch. The ones holding up the fort are always the collection of digits that add up to 10. 

It could be J8 and G2. It could also be F4, V4, A1 and L1. It depends on which particular skill set was required. Thus calling upon the combination best fit for the job.

Presently, there isn’t any one person who would dare claim the title as being the second in command of Q branch.

Except Z10.

Z10 appeared twice. Holding the fort and firewalls on their own. And on both occasions combined, it accounted for every minion in Q branch. The running rumour was that Z10, was actually Q himself. A safeguard protocol or something. Everyone was sure Q installed it to run automatically. That, or it was another of Q’s many personas he had online.

Z10 may remains a mystery for now, but the minions would uncover it one day. 

Q was sure of it.

It was Tanner who had bought Skyfall before MI6 was supposed to put it up for auction when James was assumed dead. He felt it was the least he could do to honour his friend and his family. Tanner knew he didn't really have time just yet for it, but he hoped one day to retire there and have a place for his grandchildren to visit.

He was... not terribly surprised when the place went up in flames. But some local heritage groups suddenly came out of the woodwork and asked if he would like help restoring the old place.

It took years. Nearly a decade. But Skyfall was looking better than James could remember it and he found himself blinking back tears when Tanner invited him inside. After all, what family is complete without an unofficial uncle?

Humans AU headcanon

for the robot/andriod square

The 00s are all the highly advanced synths that Boothroyd built and tried to protect from the world

Some of them fit really well into the family and stay together after Boothroyd dies, while others strike out to make it on their own in the wider world. Alec is one of those who leaves and travels the world. The others are worried he will do something stupid (again) and their existence will be found out. They only hope he is in another country when he does so.

Of course, they are all fiercely protective of Boothroyd’s son Q. He’s their little brother. He nearly died in a plane crash when he was just a kid, but Boothroyd was able to use synth technology to save his life. As far as they know, he’s the only human-synth hybrid. 

Q spends his free time and computer skills campaigning for synth rights.

Olivia had to pay her way through college. She was right at that edge of women being allowed by society to study maths and sciences rather than studying typing and home economics. The push from the war effort would only provide opportunities for employment, not for textbooks. To make her way, she did some modeling. Nothing lewd, but she knew she looked good and her father knew some people at the paper who needed some young girls to sell products. Word of her availability and willingness grew from there. She was getting her photo taken every week. As long as it was easy and paid well, she didn't particularly care what her image was selling. She didn't even know she was on the cover of The Housewife until her aunt phoned up to reprimand her mother for letting Olivia elope. It took a week to convince her otherwise.

Pixies at MI6 headcanon

Contrary to popular myth, pixies do not live in Q branch, playing in the tunnels and stealing gadgets. No, the pixies of MI6 live in the halls of accounting.

There is one filling cabinet which always seems to be stuck and yet no one removes it. That is where the pixies live. It's cozy, right near the radiators, and through a rusted spot in the second drawer they can see out the nearest window.

At night, they enjoy sneaking out and changing single numbers on finished reports. The chaos such a small change makes is way more pleasurable than the old days of pulling hair or spoiling milk. 

And if no one seems to notice that the changes are always in Q Branch's favor, well, the previous Q was a man of the land and he knew the signs of pixies and was very good at striking carefully worded deals.

Vampires at MI6

It entertained M to no end every time she heard the 00s joke that the medical staff must be vampires. That was the obvious joke. And since they never had to deal with accounting, there’s no reason why they should stumble upon the truth. 

A few of the older members still drank blood. Often going to the doctors in medical as a resource for clean blood. They had a crockpot in their kitchen which kept it warm--apparently it tasted better that way. 

But most of the department were those newer, more evolved vampires: energy vampires. They drained people’s energy by engaging them in small talk in the halls, sending constant emails about little things, and worst of all holding small meetings to review the particulars of the budget every quarter. M always knew on those nights, she would be sleeping in her office. It was impossible to muster the energy to make it safely home.

Maybe next year she’d consider bringing one of them to the annual justification committee with Parliament.

Felix told James that the CIA asked him to specifically make sure James didn't get involved in that latest mission in Cuba. Bond about died laughing, especially when he made this meme and then threw in on tumblr. It's not his fault that the bald eagle has such a bewildered face seen straight on. Besides, its his duty to King and country for him to make fun of the colonies.

Sandman AU

Or, headcanons about who would be Endless in this AU and how they would be slightly different from Gaiman’s original. Glad I finished this in time for Crossover day. And, this wraps up my non-human prompt table!

Destiny (Bill Tanner) was the oldest sibling and was frequently the one to settle arguments between his younger siblings. They listened to him and respected his authority, but only within his sight. Which yes, technically, was everywhere. He did have his book which told him everything that was happening in every possible universe. But sometimes he closed the book. Sometimes he remembered to spread a little more Free Will.

Death (Eve Moneypenny) used to be more severe, taking her job seriously and wanting to be as punctual as possible. But then she took someone her sister was close to without allowing Despair to say a proper farewell. The hurt on her sister’s face made her realise that maybe she could be a little more gracious. In the last two millennia, she has really embraced her role as Life as well. 

Dream (Q) loved seeing what humans invented. No, they weren’t the smartest creatures in the universe, and yes, they had a tendency to make incredibly stupid decisions without considering the ramifications. A few of them knew him better as Nightmare. But. They dreamed. Their ingenuity knew no bounds in the waking, and Dream delighted in seeing their ideas come to life in the Dreaming. 

Destruction (Elliot Carver) was never how people expected him to be. They wanted to paint him as a villainous character, someone who revelled in the ruin which followed in his wake. And, to be fair, he had been like that in his younger years. Yet quite against his will, he found himself drawn to the rejuvenation efforts, the rebuilding, the Creation in the wake of ruin. At Dream’s subtle suggestion, e found himself wandering worlds, collecting stories from survivors and passing them on to encourage others.

Desire (Octopussy) lived and breathed influence over others. She was good at it too. She revelled in manipulation of any creature, they were all beneath her. All except her twin.

Despair (Elektra King) was the queen of rotten luck. She didn’t laugh at people down on their luck, no. She commemorated with them, comforted them. She was the sweet sorrow and every smile in the bittersweet moments. After her twin, she got along best with Death, because she understood how every sad ending is sad because of what came before.

Delight (Dolly) is pint sized and full of exuberance. Like Desire, she sways people with her charms, but she just wants everyone to love life and experience it to it’s fullest. Which, she’s still young, and sometimes she spills over into Delirium when things become overwhelming, but one of her siblings, Destruction usually, is there to catch her and reminder her that sometimes a little bit of moderation is good. It’s a work in progress. 

In this AU, James Bond of course takes the role of Hob. The man can’t die and he has a lot of character development to work on.

In a world where Bond doesn't stop her as fast, I imagine Elektra has very adept PR people who really sell her as the face of a country which is quickly positioning itself to be a world leader and change the way others view it. I think people would be quite impressed with the way she hires local people and pays them a fair wage and how she has proven herself a skillful negotiator in a business dominated by men.

As usual, there's a lot the people of the world don't know about Elektra King.

Shapeshifter AU headcanons

Bernard Lee M - M shifts into a swan. It was quite unusual when he was a child, but when he ended up in government, it started to make sense. He kept others in line and worked hard to make sure people stayed alive. He was quite proud of reducing casualties when he assumed the position of M. Only once did an agent get him so furious that they found out just how hard a swan bite could hurt.

Robert Brown M - M shifts into a porcupine. Just like his shifted form, he presents a prickly exterior but those who know him realise he can be very kind hearted. Confident enough in himself, her is not afraid to be seen in his shifted form and is often found soaking up the rats of sun on his desk.

Judi Dench M - M shifts into a chameleon. Adept at adapting to new situations, she is much like the animal she becomes. When affects find out, they nearly always say it makes sense that she has cold blood to match her cold heart. Only Q asked if she can shoot blood from her eyes. She cannot, but she did spend two weeks trying to teach herself.

Ralph Fiennes M - M shifts into a butterfly. It's been a source of embarrassment his whole life. He was always mocked for being fragile and for caring about his appearance. But in reality, his butterfly trait is that he is easily swayed by the political winds.
