#Rainswept Flower's death
Note
So both clear and gray are bad… what about my boy jagged? Does he get a happy life?
Jagged Peak does indeed get a happy life!
Just uh.... Ignore WCR!The Sun Trail for a minute. He ain't having a good time in there.
He becomes mates with Rainswept Flower, becomes a permanent part of Shadowclan, and has kits of his own later after learning and maturing and really getting comfortable in his own skin. The kids are Holly Bird (who will one day become a leader named Birdstar), Shade Pelt, and Dewy Nose. Eagle Feather is no longer his child, and Holly doesn't exist.
Holly Bird is named after Fluttering Bird. Shade Pelt is named after Shaded Moss. Dewy Nose is named after Dewy Leaf, who babysat both Rainswept Flower and Jagged Peak, and was a great companion.
He is 1/3 actual Main Protagonists for WCR!DOTC, alongside Thunder and Petal/Sky Petal/Skystar.
He changes and grows through his life, learning to look before he leaps, and take other's opinions on-board, sadly it comes from watching his god-awful older brothers.
He's an all-around good guy, learning to adjust to a new world and becoming more secure in himself while also processing his own emotions.

So, I'm writing an essay on the whole STATE of misogyny in WC for one of my university classes, and I was wondering if I could ask you a couple of things! No pressure of course, please feel free to say no!
A) Could I reference your good takes with appropriate harvard referencing and links back to your blog?
B) Are there any specific moments from the books that you think should be covered the most?
C) The end result will be a visual essay, so it's like those fun infographics people on Tumblr make on like ADHD and stuff, so when it's done, would you like to be tagged to read it?
(Sorry for anon, I'm nervous lmao, but if you'd be more comfortable I'll resend this off anon)
AAY good topic! You've got a lot to work with. Absolutely feel free to reference anything I've written, and tag me when you're done.
While you're here and about to write something so legitimate, I'm also going to recommend you check out Sunnyfall's video on gender in Warrior Cats. She breaks down the arcs into numbers, directly comparing the amount of lines mollies have to toms, and examining the archetypes women are usually allowed to be.
I think it's a must-have citation in a paper about WC misogyny.
...and, I think it's insightful to look at the WCRP Forum thread about the video. Note how the respondents immediately come into the thread to complain about how the video is too long so they didn't watch it, dismissing Sunnyfall as not being entertaining enough to hold their attention, even whining that she starts with statistics to prove her point, which I'm convinced she did exactly because they would have cried that she "had no evidence" if she didn't.
I am not a scholar, so I don't know how to document or prove that the books have an impact on the audience outside of anecdotes. But I think if you do write a section about fandom, it would be worth mentioning the in-universe and metatextual apologia for Ashfur and its reflection in the real world discourse, the authorial killing of Ferncloud because of fan complains, and the utter defensiveness against the discussion of misogyny you see outside of Tumblr.
You may also want to check out Cheek by Jowl, a collection of 8 essays about sexism in xenofiction by Ursula K. Le Guin. There's a very unique manifestation of authorial bias in animal fiction, having a lot to do with how the author views "the natural world," and it's worth understanding even though Warrior Cats are so heavily anthropomorphized.
So... Warrior Cats Misogyny
I think discussing individual instances can be helpful, but I'd implore you to keep in mind what's REALLY bad about WC's misogyny is framing and the bigger picture.
Bumble's death is shocking and insulting, but it's not just that she died. It's that the POV Gray Wing sees her as a fat, useless bitch who took his mate so she deserves to be dragged back to a domestic abuser, and he's right because the writers love him so much. It's that Bumble's torture and killing only factors into how it's going to hurt a man's reputation.
It's how Clear Sky hitting, emotionally manipulating, or killing the following women,
Bright Stream (pressured into leaving her home and family)
Storm (controlled her movements and yelled at her in public)
Misty (killed for land, children stolen)
Bumble (beaten unconscious, blamed nonsensically on a fox)
Alder (child abuse, hit when she refused to attack her brother)
Falling Feather (scratched on the face, subjected to public abuse and humiliation)
Tall Shadow (thrown into murderous crowd, attacked on-sight in heaven)
Rainswept Flower ("blacked out" in anger and murdered in cold blood)
Moth Flight (scratched on the face for saying denying medical treatment is mean, taken hostage in retaliation against mother for the death of his own child, which he caused)
Willow Tail (eyes gouged out for "stirring up trouble")
Is seen as totally understandable, forgivable, or not even questioned at all, when killing Gray Wing in an act of rage would have been "one step too far" with the ridiculous Star Line.
"Kill me and live with the memory, and then let the stars know it would only matter if a single one of your murder victims was a man."
It's the way that fathers who physically abuse their kids out of their ego (Clear Sky, Sandgorse, Crowfeather) aren't treated anywhere near the same level of narrative disgust and revulsion the series has for "bad moms", even if they're displaying symptoms of a post-partum mood disorder (depression, anxiety, and rage), an umbrella of mental illnesses 20% of all new mothers experience but are heavily stigmatized with (Sparkpelt, Palebird, Lizardstripe).
It's Crookedstar's Promise giving him two evil maternal figures in a single book, while bending over backwards to make every man in a position of power still look likeable in spite of the fact they're enabling Rainflower's abuse. Leader Hailstar is soso sorry that he has to change Stormkit's name for some reason, in spite of leaders being unaccountable dictators the other 99% of the time, and Deputy Shellheart functionally does nothing to stop his own son from being abused or even do much parenting before or after the fact.
It's the way men's parental struggles are seen sympathetically, and they don't have to "pay for it" like their female counterparts (Crookedstar's PPD vs Sparkpelt's PPD, how Daisy and Cinders are held responsible for Smoky and Whisper being deadbeats, Yellowfang's endless guilt for killing her son vs Onestar's purpose in life to kill his own), even to the point where a father doesn't have to have raised their kids at all to have a magical innate emotional connection to them (Tree's father Root, Tom the Wifebeater, Tigerstar and Hawkfrost).
It's less speaking lines and agency for female characters, being reduced to accessories in the lives of their mates and babies, women getting less diversity in their personalities, with even major ex-POV characters eventually becoming "sweet mom" tropes.
You could zoom in on any one of these examples and have an amoeba try to argue with you that "Oh THIS makes sense because X" or "Ah well my headcanon perfectly explains this thing" or "MY mother/girlfriend was abusive/toxic/neglectful and I've decided that you are personally attacking ME by having issues with how a character was written or utilized," but the beleaguered point,
That I keep trying to hammer in, over and over, across books worth of posts,
Is that these are trends. More than just a couple one-off examples. It's the fabric that has been woven over years, showing a lack of interest in, or even active prejudice of, women on behalf of the writers.
LONG STANDING trends, which have only gotten worse as the series progressed. From Yellowfang being harshly punished with a born evil son who ruins her life in TPB and the mistreatment of Squirrelpaw that begins in TNP, all the way up to the 7 Fridgenings of DOTC and Sparkpelt's PPD being a major character motivator for her son Nightheart.
So, I would stress that in your paper, and structure it less as "the Sparkpelt slide" and "the Yellowfang slide," and more as "The paternal vs maternal abuse" slide, and "the violence against women" slide. They're really big issues, there's tons of examples for each individual thing.
Anyway to leave off on a funny, look at this scene in Darkest Hour that I find unreasonably hilarious,
Tumblr media
"Everyone who matters to me; my truest friend, my sensible and loyal warrior, the wisest deputy I've ever known, and 2 women." -Firestar, glorious idiot
He can't even think of a single trait for either of them what the hell does "formidable pair" mean lmaooo, when I finished a reread about a year ago this line killed me on impact.

Tigerstar body count:
Redtail
Runningwind
Brindleface
Gorsepaw
Bluestar (last life)
Stonefur
Clear Sky body count:
Fox
Misty
Bumble
Rainswept Flower
I will charitably count every indirect death at the First Battle, an event which was 100% his fault, as only 1 (Falling Feather, Jackdaw's Cry, Hawk Swoop, Frost, Fircone, etc)
Micah
Tiny Branch (refused to let Acorn Fur get fully trained or fetch help until it was too late)
Willow Tail
Wind Runner (1 life)
I could also point out that Tom the Wifebeater, Moon Shadow, Storm, Petal, and Bright Stream died as a result of bad calls or terrible choices he made. Not to mention his long history of physical assault, abandonment of the disabled, and emotional abuse.
This is fine because the writers like him. "He just made some mistakes," but also he should totally forgive himself because it was always foretold and thus not really his fault

DOTC rough rewrite ideas v v v
One-Eye's group and Slash's group exist from the beginning. They're the first cats in the forest, and are introduced early on.
^ Also a BUNCH of these random cats are kitty pets so they get funny names. I don't know why in canon every cat has a nature-inspired names (Alder, Fox, Juniper, Beech etc..) ur telling me NO ONE was once a kittypet?
Bright Stream stays home. It isn't until Jagged Peak goes missing that she *and* Grey Wing go look for him, resulting in the three of them joining the travelling tribe group.
Moon Shadow dies. he dies to a hawk/vulture, replacing bright streams death.
The Tribes relationships are clearly stated-- Bright Stream is the sister of Rainswept Flower. Dappled Petal and Turtle Tail are sisters etc...
Bumble and Tom are both barn cats. Specifically barn cats. I do not like the amount of sexism DOTC has, so Tom only exists to be the sire to Turtle Tail and Bumbles kits.
One-eye's group is akin to Thunderclan. Their driving goal is to get rid of the mountain cats.
Slash's group is akin to Bloodclan, as he is more or less just power-hungry. He convinces One-Eyes cats to join him after so many of them get beat up-insisting that they should just run away and come back later.
First book -> The group discovers the forest, and they bump into a few of One-Eye's cats. -> Clear Sky is like 'well. we are not going back to the mountains.' and begins aggravating One-Eyes cats. (One-Eye never meets Clear Sky or the others face to face, just his lackeys.) -> The group *kick* Clear Sky out for his behaviour, Bright Stream, Jagged Peak, Jackdaw's Cry and Hawk Swoop join him. (Jagged Peak is about 6 months old, Jackdaw Cry and Hawk swoop are around 10 months to a year.)
Second book -> It's clear One-Eye's group is dying off, but in reality, alot of the cats are just migrating to Slash's group. -> At this point Thundering Storm is born to Clear Sky and Bright Stream. -> Clear Sky has sheltered some of cats who aren't particularly tied to either group. (Petal, Frost, Fox, Muddy Paws and Mouse Ear.) -> Thundering Storm and Bright Stream leave Clear Sky after an attack from One-Eye's group. They rejoin the others on the moor.
Third book. -> Moor cats are having problems with Slash's group. Also Turtle Tail is here with Bumble! But not really, she's a barn cat now. Her kittens are moor cats. -> Thundering Storm changes her name. she also decides being a woman is epic. -> Bright Stream, supporting her daughter encourages her to explore, which she does. Thunder creates her own mini Thunderclan -> Clear Sky begs the moor cats + Thunder to help beat the hell out of One-Eye. being normal, and not colonizers they say no. Clear Sky, instead beats them up. -> The First battle ensues. Some cats die. Clear Sky still kills Rainswept Flower which enraged Bright Stream as she makes an attempt on his life. -> Clear Sky is forever shunned from the moor cats. -> The rest of the moor cats and Clear Sky's old group members decide to meet up in honour of the dead cats. (Four trees is created)
Fourth book -> River's here. he's cool. -> Sickness. Star Flower just appears offering the cure. no one knows who Star Flower is. -> Clear Sky is all alone until Star Flower comes around. -> Star Flower and some of her friends (she has friends and a personality) join Clear Sky's group. -> Through Clear Sky we learn that One-Eye's old group has merged into a cruel dangerous group - Slash's group. -> Moor and Thunder's group don't care. -> River mentions Slash's group. Everyone cares now. -> Slash's group attacks and seriously maims bright stream- actually killing her. -> Thunder and friends goes to politely ask Slash not to kill them. -> Slash says no. -> We meet Violet and everyone else I forgot to mention.
Fifth book -> Star Flower goes alone to speak with Slash. they keep her hostage, Hollyleaf/Ivypool/Twigbranch style. -> Clear Sky begs for help. -> Everyone says no at first because they hate Clear Sky, but Star Flower's cool, so they plan a rescue plan. -> Star Flower escapes. -> Slash's group is starting to crumble as there's no sense of unity or community, which is something One-Eyes group actually had. -> After Star Flower is rescued, Slash, and his group, attacks and kills one of Wind Runners kits. -> Moor cats flee to what will later be known as Shadowclan, with Tall Shadow assuming leadership.
Sixth book -> war. slash is defeated and some more cats die. -> Wind Runner and her followers go back to the moor, needing time to heal. this officially marks the beginning of each clan, Thunderclan, Riverclan, Shadowclan, Windclan and Skyclan. -> general wrap up of the series and some implements of the first of the warrior code.

List of cats Clear Sky has killed or wronged in no order
1. Jagged Peak(Kicks him out for getting permanently inquired under his watch during training)
2. Thunder(Rejects him at birth. Gets him back because of him helping during the fire. Proceeds to torment him, put him through harsh training, and then tell him to lick a festering wound for defending a campmate from his bs)
3. Frost(Kicks him out to die due to a permanent inquiry that wasn’t treated. Wanted Thunder to leave him “Where the maggots could get him”)
4. Misty(Murders her for being on his territory and then wants to kill her kits)
5. Bumble(Murdered her for being on his territory and then blames it on a fox)
6. Jackdaw’s Cry(Keeps him prisoner and starves him)
7. Shadowstar(Throws her into a gathering of his cats basically as someone to murder)
8. Rainswept Flower(Murders her in a “fit of rage” during the Great battle)
9. Micah(Due to Clear Sky’s orders he fell from a tree to his death)
10. Moth Flight(Refuses to let her train Acorn Fur and takes her hostage later to “punish Windstar and make her admit her mistakes”)
11. Windstar’s first life(He slashed her throat AND BROKE HER LEG leading to her death from the inquires)
12. Willow Tail(Blinds and then kills her)
And many more that I’m SURE I forgot(I excluded the other casualties of the Great Battle which was caused by him and his camp)
All of this and you’re telling me he went to Starclan for saving ONE CAT FROM A DOG?!?? It the Tom redemption death all over again.
And no I’m not counting the last three books of DOTC where he’s “so sowwy guys : (“ as a redemption. It’s mostly characters making excuses for his actions and then him committing the same if not worse actions AGAIN. He’s not sorry he did it. He’s sorry he got CALLED OUT FOR IT. We see the same behavior in Moth Flight’s vision and Riverstar’s home. Both of which take place after Path of Stars. He’s not sorry. He never was.

essentially like all of the she-cats, as well as jagged peak, from dotc are treated like shit in the fandom, AND in the books!! Like. there are so many interesting she-cats in this arc (quiet rain, tall shadow, wind runner, turtle tail, bumble, storm, rainswept flower, quick water, petal, bright sky, night, dappled pelt, drizzle, acorn fur) who deserve attention… and jagged peak, while he isn’t a she-cat, gets thrown to the side in favor of his awful brothers… geez, I wonder *why* that is, erins. clear Sky and gray wing just suck (sure i think they’re interesting but… like. clear sky isnt in the slightest redeemable or ‘misunderstood’, and gray wing isn’t all that ‘wise’ - he, too, is abusive (multiple times, even! to turtle tail, to jagged peak, to thunder, wind runner (tells her to just ‘get over’ her daughter’s death, and that it was ‘meant to be’) and tall shadow (shits on her for ‘not taking care of her clan’ while her brother is literally in a coma or something) - and another thing! thunder is weird too! when he first sees violet dawn, being abused and threatened by slash, does he point out how awful and wrong that is? no! his thoughts are essentially ‘woah she’s hot I want her to be my wife!!’ it is gross and completely inappropriate that the Erin’s decided that was okay to include
dotc is the most egregious of all arcs for this it has ZERO interest in the she-cats of its series beyond killing them, pumping out protagonist babies, or pacifying them so they don't come close to being in the same spotlight as the tom characters. no interest in them as characters, no interest in exploring them beyond what they can offer the male characters around them.
dotc's unique in how much openly misogynistic it is, but it also feels like the natural conclusion of the past series' writing trends and will only be exacerbated so long as the writing team sees critiques of these as attacks and not very warranted concerns.

I do like Gray Wing, but tbh it is true that he treated Turtle Tail and Bumble pretty badly. I think he matured a lot after Turtle’s death though, since he seemed to recognize the flaws of his ways and worked to better himself afterwards - at least from what I can remember from the arc. The highlights of dotc though for me was River Ripple, Tall Shadow, and Clear Sky, I found them all to be super interesting characters. I liked Rainswept Flower and Quick Water a lot too, both are pretty underrated
Oh yeah I agree about Gray Wing, he was a bit of an ass to them, but he did realise it after Turtle’s death at least I believe
I absolutely love River Ripple and Tall Shadow, and I find Clear Sky so interesting and I love his writing so much! He makes me too angry reading about him to like him lol but I really appreciate his character, and the fact he makes me so angry shows how effective it is.
You’re so right about Rainswept Flower and Quick Water as well, I’m surprised I don’t see more about them in the fandom tbh

for my first real post on this blog, i'll go ahead and talk about dawn of the clans, and how it made me so disgusted and bored that i stopped reading halfway through. dawn of the clans is the book series that actually introduced me to warrior cats. the blazing star was the first warrior cats book i ever picked up at the library because it had a cute cat on it, and now i'm here! back then i'm sure i loved dawn of the clans, as i loved every warrior cats book, but reading it back now it just made me... upset. specifically with how the books treated the female characters as something to be used and then tossed away because the male characters need it to fuel their stories. first it was fluttering bird, who i don't know if she really counts because she was such a minor character, but it sets the tone for female characters down the line being treated like trash by the authors. then bright stream gets carried away by an eagle while carrying clear sky's kits, making clear sky more distant from the other cats. storm gets buried alive, bumble (who was getting abused by tom) gets murdered, and turtle tail gets killed while trying to rescue her kits from tom. rainswept flower is killed by clear sky, just to add to that Man Pain! all of it is just so... distressing. like, i'm aware male characters die as well, but it felt like they didn't die on the same level the female characters did. and most of the female characters death only "benefited" the male characters, by giving them some sort of motive, which always boils down to "this pretty she-cat died, so i guess i have to be nice now :(" the blatant misogyny in dawn of the clans is the biggest reason for why i stopped reading halfway through. i enjoyed the characters like jagged peak and star flower, but everyone else either died or was just insufferable (looking at you, gray wing and clear sky, our "fun" protagonists we're supposed to root for). the books themselves were also just super boring, and it really made me sad that a series that i used to love was actually really bad. then again, that goes for the entirety of warrior cats, and i'm sure that i'll find more arcs to hate as i keep reading. in short. all of the female characters in dawn of the clans were done dirty, and i will stuff them in my pocket and keep them safe. also, rainswept flower x turtle tail forever.

About halfway through Suntrail rn and here’s how I would rate the traveling cats (from favorite to least favorite)
Jagged Peak - He is baby, can do no wrong, annoying in the best way, peak little brother
Gray Wing - Peak older brother, also I find him really relatable in the way he shoulders guilt like he was born to do it and feels overly responsible for everything
Moon Shadow - He’s the fucking worst and I love him for it, Berrynose kinda annoying, like I want to put tape over his mouth but I love him you know?
Tall Shadow - There’s not much for me to say about her yet but I like the change in her that happens after she ends up in charge, you can feel her desperation and frustration while fighting with Moon
Shaded Moss - I think his relationship with Rainswept was really sweet and he was a really kind and steady leader while he was around, there isn’t much to say in him but he was pretty great
Quiet Water - I think her bit about hating water is really funny and that little moment she has with Jagged after he freezes on the Thunderpath was really sweet
Dappled Pelt - Fish lesbian! She’s super sweet, there isn’t much to her but I like the way she always seems to look out for everyone and her friendship relationship with Falling is super cute
Falling Feather - Another fish lesbian! She kinda gives me golden retriever energy? Just like- idk, very sweet and generally happy, her scenes with Dappled are super sweet and I like how eager she is to be in water, admittedly when I think about her I just picture Feathertail
Turtle Tail - admittedly she hasn’t stood out very much to me until the last like two chapters I’ve read, she’s sweet and I like her eagerness but she doesn’t have much in terms of actual character yet, it’s mostly just about Gray Wing, though I find it interesting how she specified multiple times how much she’d hate a boring life
Clear Sky - I don’t have much to say about him? I mean, it feels wrong to judge his character rn when I’ve basically only seen him grieving (though I know he’s an asswipe most of the time anyway) but he yelled at Jagged so... he’s really only here because he’s got more to him then the others
Rainswept Flower - Her relationship with Shaded Moss was really sweet and her reaction to his death made me sad, I also liked that scene with Gray helping her across the gorge-thing, again not much to her yet but she’s cool
Cloud Spots - Our other healer! Again, not much to her, but she seems to know even more about herbs then Dappled even though Dappled is supposed to be their herb cat? I’m really curious how she knows all of it, did Dappled teach her?
Bright Stream - She admittedly didn’t have much character outside of Clear Sky but I still found her very sweet, the fact she died because she was helping Gray Wing is really upsetting
Shattered Ice - Not much to say on him, the only scene I remember of him is when he takes charge of crossing the thunderpath right before they reach the territories, and I mean- he does well there ig
Jackdaw’s Cry - now, listen, I don’t dislike him, but I legitimately can’t remember a single thing he’s done, so by default he’s at the bottom
I’ll redo this list once per book from now on, just to see how my opinions change over time

fun ideas to consider for a dotc overhaul bc that arc is hot garbage:
clear sky starts a cult and leaves resshakkmyu [the tribe of rushing water] to continue having control over its members. this includes clear wing, clear peak, storm's stream, quick water, dappled cloud, hawk swoop, jackdaw's cry, jackdaw's feather, dewy leaf, and turtle tail.
cats from fwookk [the tribe of flowing winds, one of my personal creations] decide to leave in order to have a new place to come to if something happens to the mountains. this includes shaded moss and his three daughters [rainswept flower, ice flower canon's shattered ice renamed, and star flower she's baby. just weaned.], snow hare, hollow tree, tall shadow, and moon shadow.
there's already a group with its own culture in the forest -- the cats of the river, led by river ripple. the cats of the river are a highly pacifist group, but they're very welcoming to new additions who want to join them, even if it's just to grab something to eat bc hunting was shit and there's a litter of kits to feed. no cats are ever forced to become a cat of the river, nor is anyone expected to repay their kindness.
wind runner's sort of a leader of her own group of cats, but it's more like cats that sometimes come in because they need help and then come back later to repay the favor. most lone cats or duos/trios are familiar with wind runner's rules of engagement as they don't like going near the river.
after settling in the marshes, shaded moss dies and his group ends up being under the joint leadership of his three daughters. this falls apart following the death of rainswept flower during the fourtrees battle and the remaining sisters join separate groups. [shaded moss is not a very good parent. he isn't terrible, but his daughters have only been told to follow in his pawprints as leader. this is very formative to star flower, who thinks she has to remain in a position of power to keep her father's memory alive.]
clear sky's cult settles on the moor, allowing contact between wind runner's group and clear sky's cult. this eventually leads to clear sky taking most of his cats to the forest, leaving behind clear wing, dappled cloud, hawk swoop, jackdaw's cry, and turtle tail.
in the forest, clear sky recruits cats into his cult, sometimes forcibly. one of his new additions kills dappled cloud, leaving both groups without a healer. this upsets everyone, but clear sky gives a half-assed lie that clear wing believes. clear wing's intelligence, coupled with his insistence that his littermate is different than everyone thinks he is, leads wind runner to treat him as an equal. this causes problems.
turtle tail leaves the moors because clear wing still has his nose up his littermate's tailhole and becomes a housecat. she's able to get a reasonable grasp on what's happening in the forest from sitting on her fence. this is important for later.
when clear peak is cast out after breaking his leg, star flower finds him and gets snow hare to take him to their home. while this is an objectively good thing to do, star flower starts taking in disabled cats so she has cats loyal to her, like how her sisters have cats willing to listen to them no problem. [she doesn't realize that it's because her sisters have friends. clear peak, now jagged peak after cutting ties with his older brothers, does think of star flower as a friend.]
after storm's stream has his firstborn, clear sky doesn't bother looking at his mate -- he claims that he's busy defending the territory -- until clear thunder is almost weaned. clear sky kills storm's stream when she refuses to cast out their freakish son, a kit that was born with one extra eye and a lower jaw on the side of his face. [clear thunder's appearance is supposed to be a message from a higher power.]
clear thunder ends up being found on the moors as a pregnant turtle tail returns -- with her wife bumble -- and ends up being raised by hawk swoop, jackdaw's cry, and clear wing. when clear sky ends up sheltering on the moors after a forest fire, clear thunder is encouraged to go live with his father.
tiny kits moth flight and pebble heart end up wandering into the marshy territory controlled by the flower sisters. they end up spending a lot of time with snow hare and learning how to heal from the old cat. turtle tail ends up getting squished by a carriage while looking for pebble heart.
when clear thunder refuses to take a disabled cat -- frost, named silent frost by clear sky -- to die out in the woods, clear sky banishes him. clear wing uses words very similar to clear sky's to justify the group not taking in frost. this makes clear thunder break off to create his own group with silent frost, bumble rly she was going to be kicked out bc she's been declawed and can't hunt or fight, acorn fur, lightning tail, sparrow fur, owl eyes, and morning whisker. [he also sheds the "clear" part of his name, separating himself from his family.] many of the cats to leave with him are young, just like him. dewy leaf, milkweed stem, chervil leaf, pink eyes, and violet dawn end up breaking away from clear sky's cult and joins thunder's group.
clear sky begins kidnapping cats in order to kill the leaders of the groups that oppose him, so he can rule the entire forest. he kidnaps shine and hopper from the cats of the river's territory, gorse root i renamed gorse fur bc his canon name sucks ass from the moors, and moon shadow from the marshes.
a great battle happens in the middle of the territories, where there are four of the largest oaks ever seen and a massive stone in the shape of a tree. [this later becomes the great rock at fourtrees. the stone tree falls over during a horrible storm not long before twolegs start destroying skyclan's territory, but that's very far off in the future.]
nettle, quick water, jackdaw's feather, hawk swoop, jackdaw's cry, rainswept flower, moon shadow, cricket, flutter, stoat, and dewy leaf all die in the battle. [many other cats end up disabled from the ferocity of the fighting.] the fighting only stops because a bolt of lightning burns off half of clear sky's whiskers before he can kill clear wing.
the spirits of the dead rise and demand that the cats unite or die. clear sky immediately tries to rally all the other cats under him, only to get bitch slapped by fluttering bird -- his half-sister that their father denied as soon as she was born bc she didn't look like him, his half-sister that became the god of his cult.
"what you want isn't true unity! it's about control! cats will only die if they continue to follow you."
cats shuffle around from thunder's group, the moors, the marshes, and the river. clear sky will not allow any more of his cats to leave. ice flower -- now shattered ice, star flower, bumble, holly, mud paws, pink eyes -- now pink flowers, pebble heart, and buzzing bee all shift territory.
star flower tries to gain power by cozying up to thunder. it works, until he catches her guilting silent frost into loyalty. when thunder kicks her out, star flower joins clear sky and quickly becomes his second in command and mate.
clear sky continues to recruit cats for his cult until there's a civil war within his territory. clear wing, still thinking there's some good in his littermate goes to help. when he takes a blow meant for clear sky, he's left for dead and is only saved by a dissenter taking him to tall shadow's group, where pebble heart saves his life.

Notes (not all my notes though and I'm not done) for the DOTC Rewrite.
It is clear from the start that Clear Sky is pushy and controlling. He pressures Bright Stream to go on the Journey.
Rainswept Flower and Turtle Tail do not die. Turtle Tail has more kits with Bumble (father unspecified), and Rainswept Flower has kits with Jagged Peak (the litter Holly would have had) as Shadowclan cats. Holly Bird, a trans molly who is noted to be very pretty. Storm Pelt, a son who shows interest in Medicine. Then Dew Nose, a little daughter who is a happy Shadowclan cat, mentoring an apprentice of her own in the end and the ancestor of Tallpoppy.
Emberkit is renamed to Ember Paws. Still dies though. After Gray Wing's insensitive remark, he is kicked from the moor group.
Bright Stream breaks it off with Clear Sky after he starts gaining power, dying in the building and having Thunder Storm (1 kit litter). Petal gets together with him, and is his one bit of clarity, the one cat who can keep him on track. They foster Birch and Alder, and she ends up pregnant during The Blazing Star with the other litter. She does not know his true crimes and tries to remain more neutral. She coins the idea of a mediation role.
Clear Sky has vitiligo, he grows more white as things go on, symbolizing his clouded judgment. By the 6th book, he is almost pure white.
Petal is the one cat that makes him apologize, forcing him to be a little better. When he at first rejects Bumble, she comes forward and says that she can stay, but for one night only. She is also renamed Sky Petal...
Bumble is taken in by Tall Shadow, and she leaves with her and Turtle Tail, disgusted by Gray Wing's attitude. She becomes mates with Bumble and it is clear Gray Wing was never the true protagonist.
Sparrow Fur wants revenge on Tom, not to meet her "father". When she pounces on him, he recognizes her and starts beating her. One Eye steps in.
Slash no longer truly exists. Female villain time BABEY
Star Flower is the final antagonist, she is making Clear Sky worse and trying to kill off the leaders. At first it is for One Eye to rule, but after his death, it is to ruin the Clans for killing her father, she brings his rogues together and carves a flower petal into their paws. She is a parallel to canon's enabling attitude towards cats like Clear Sky.
River Ripple has much more involvement with the issues, he doesn't want to be involved, but he has no choice. His home is under threat and he cannot simply sit back and watch other cats be tortured by Clear Sky.
The ending is Gray Wing succumbing to his asthma, kicked out of the Clans (except Shadowclan, which he doesn't even try with) by their leaders. He dies at Fiveoaks, swearing that he will haunt the Clans that rejected him forever, he will destroy their precious Stars. Except Shadowclan, he still has love for Turtle Tail and the home she loves, unable to let go of his possessive behavior towards her. He doesn't go to Starclan, or even the Dark Forest. He is so full of hate, his ghost haunts the living world.

Do you have any plans for Shaded Moss, since Gray Wing is dying in his place? (The specifics of that in my brain was Gray Wing shoving him out of the way of the carriage)
My own thoughts were something along the lines of him having been second-in-command to Gray Wing, but after xir death, Clear Sky starts undermining them, 'suggesting' to people that hey, maybe he *set that up* like, isn't it convenient? That Gray Wing died? Leaving Shaded Moss in charge? Wow, funny like that, huh? And even if most of the group dismisses it as bullshit, it's still "What kinda moron almost gets run over by a carriage and has to be pushed out of the way? Should we really be following him?" Eventually, Clear Sky takes the people who listen to him and leaves, and Tall Shadow kinda forces him to step down, and Shaded Moss kinda lives on the fringes of the group until after Bumble gets driven out. He kinda serves as a surrogate father to Thunder (because I kinda want to keep adoption a thing) and teaches him how to pass better as a tom (because I love older transmascs helping guide their juniors, I wish I had had someone older who knew a little more helping me with that shit as a kid).
I imagine he dies in the First Battle, either just before the "Tell the stars you won" line, or just after, knocking Clear Sky off of Bright Storm and getting killed for it just before Starclan intervenes.
GREAT IDEA let's take it!
(Note though: Shaded Moss -> Shaded Flower, because they now have a naming system that includes a familial last name. Shaded Flower and Rainswept Flower are father and daughter like canon.)
It'll be good for showing how "connected" tribe culture is, to have Thunder Storm have bonds with a lot of the cats he will eventually come into conflict with. Thunder Storm having a surrogate dad figure in the disgraced leader works nicely. Here's how I'll approach it though, taking your suggestions and making sure it works with what's established;
Gray Wing was the leader, Shaded Flower was second in command. He was a logistics sort of guy.
They had never seen a horse before. The group charged in front of it while crossing, spooking it.
Something I found interesting in Sun Trail is that Clear Sky was commanding them across the road that gets Canon!Shade killed on. I think I want to keep that, having Clear Sky be the one who shouted for them all to charge.
Shaded Flower's response to the large animal rearing up was to hiss and freeze
And of course, Gray Wing runs back to save him, getting kicked and killed.
While burying xem, Shade was catching flak. He panicked and his response was to freeze. Clear Sky never takes responsibility for his own actions, and what kind of guy freezes in front of a deer so huge??
He didn't really "step down" so much as Tall Shadow and Clear Sky just naturally started becoming the new leaders. He was pretty ashamed that he got Gray Wing killed.
Embarrassingly, Rainswept Flower ended up having to be his defender a lot of the time. He didn't want her reputation to suffer as a result of his cowardice, but... ugh here they are.
When Jagged Peak broke his leg, Shaded Flower didn't speak up, doubting his own judgement.
But when Bright Storm comes back with her three-legged newborn, he is IMMEDIATELY on Tall Shadow's side in the split. Though his reputation took a big hit, him being on her side IS still helpful.
He probably teaches Thunder Storm how to cook along with helping his transition, since this is going to be an important skill he displays later when he befriends River's Ripple. Rainswept Flower is like a young 19-year-old at this point, making her own life, and Shaded Flower has a sort of loneliness about him.
He probably looks out for Bright Storm, too, since they both had a pretty traumatic experience with Clear Sky treating them like ass. Brings her food and such, makes small talk, watches her kid when she needs a break.
Shaded Flower is, however, probably not a member of early ThunderClan. Or at the very least, he's kind of conflicted about it.
Rainswept Flower is loyal to Tall Shadow, and will remain ShadowClan for her whole life. He really doesn't want to leave her behind
(She even eventually has kittens with Sun Shadow, but that's not super relevant.)
Though... I may have him be part of Bright Storm's Reinforcements, and note how much he's torn between supporting the boy who's practically an adopted son, and his daughter back in Tall Shadow's Clan. He can love them both equally and be torn up over it.
Whatever happens, he will be dying in the place where Rainswept Flower dies in canon. His death in Clear Sky's jaws, "I'm not greedy, just strong!" enrages Bright Storm, who bumrushes him.
She delivers the Star Line, Clear Sky rejects it, and Thunder Storm rushes in to end his battle with Clear Sky once and for all before StarClan halts it.

Slash's Famous Scene
Here we are, lads. Everyone's favorite scene in the totally best arc of WC. The one where Slash pins a pregnant woman to the ground and licks her face, while threatening her fetuses and cutting her cheek open so Clear Sky can have more man pain.
So far I've been using "fridging" as synonymous with the brutal killing of a female character to advance a male character's arc; but I do want to remind everyone that the term "fridging" describes disproportionate violence done to women in the service of their husband/brother/father/son's arcs. It doesn't HAVE to be death; it can also be battery, maiming, depowering, or sexual assault.
So far, 8 women have died to serve male arcs, most of them for Clear Sky specifically. Fluttering Bird, Bright Stream, Storm, Misty, Bumble, Turtle Tail, Rainswept Flower, and Petal. Now Star Flower gets sexually harassed and kidnapped, bringing the arc's fridge total to 9.
Anyway content warning, obviously. It's still Warrior Cats and doesn't get too graphic, but this bag contains a dead dove.
First, Clear Sky gets another toesucking from the ghost of his wife who died after leaving his controlling ass. Specifically, after he threw his disabled brother out of his Clan, and after his lust for seeing random people (including his brother) get mauled at the border resulted in the death of Fox.
She tells him that his behavior never drove anyone away, it was all totally not his fault. I'm waiting for a laugh track and it never comes. The apologetics in this arc are unrivaled.
Then, Clear Sky wakes up and his pregnant wife is not next to him. So he goes looking for her and sees her being flanked by Slash and his memorable minions, Grunt 1 and Grunt 2. Star Flower is so possessed by fear that she doesn't move.
Tumblr media
They REALLY need to sell that Slash is TRUE evil, PURE evil, because of the wet fart that is Clear Sky's redemption arc. They're saying that Clear Sky ISN'T bad, because he is not this. A dirty, sadistic monster who coos evilly about how he's going to hurt the kittens in his wife's belly and cruelly twitches his whiskers.
(as a petty side detail, please also note that this passage cannot even keep Slash's fur color straight. Behold, a cat so evil that he cannot even remain a brown tabby! He turns gray when he commits nefarious deeds! Ashfurification included!)
Tumblr media
Star Flower is the one being pinned to the ground and having her face cut open as Slash screams about how she promised her father she'd be his mate, but this scene is about Clear Sky's distress. Star Flower is an object to this narrative, which these two men are in conflict over.
The pinning, the violence, the sexual implications, are being done to make Slash as monstrous as possible to contrast to Clear Sky. Slash doesn't kill anyone, so the narrative needs to make you SO UPSET your emotions are thrown into overdrive, so you'll accept how truly terrible he is.
The simple truth that this rancid book is trying to make you ignore, is that Clear Sky is exponentially more deadly. He has caused harm so unspeakable that they have to describe his bloody murders in passive voice. They "died" now, instead of "were killed," and the violent system he created is presented as "making up" for the trauma he's caused to the survivors.
Tumblr media
"Pushing his muzzle close to her injured cheek, he licked the blood from her fur with a long, lingering lap."
Think critically about the characters they are presenting and the actions they make them do. None of these are real people. They are writing choices. They have portrayed Slash as a perverted, domineering, child-abusing savage, so Clear Sky the Settler can look good in comparison.
then Star Flower gets dragged off, kicking and struggling, feeble and completely unable to defend herself as clear sky thinks about how she might die along with his fetuses.
Tumblr media
Obviously Clear Sky is so very stressed out by all this and needs to blow off some steam, so he smacks the nearest woman and starts screeching about how Star Flower is more loyal than the son he abuses
Tumblr media
The first thing he does after the Slash event was physically assault the nearest woman. I can't... I don't have the words. Are you seeing this. Do you see what I am fucking dealing with. literally the first woman he sees.
"DOES THAT FEEL LIKE AN ACT??" He bellowed like a fucking wifebeater at the girl whose face is bleeding because he cut her in a fit of rage. That's fine as long as you don't lustfully lick it afterwards I guess!!!

Rainswept Flower’s last words were:
“You’ll keep stealing land as long as we let you. [....] How could any cat starve here? There’s so much. Wanting more is just greedy!”
