Best Anime Openings Spring 2023
With the Spring season winding down, I thought it might be a fun time to share my favorite openings from this season (may or may not do an endings one as well). Initially I had thought about doing a tier list, but that's far too arbitrary for my tastes at this point, so we're gonna stick with the ones that stood out. I'll just go ahead and get started.
Mahou Shoujo Magical Destroyers - Magical Destroyer
youtube
I don't really need to say much about this one, I already wrote about it in depth once. But yeah, damn good opening that has the perfect mix of everything Inagawa, and tells a self-contained story about the journey of these magical girls and Otaku Hero. It's a wildly impressive affair from start to finish, though not quite for the faint of heart as the music choice may be abrasive to some (personally, I love it).
Heavenly Delusion - Innocent Arrogance
youtube
Really, this and MAD are interchangeable as my openings of the season/year. In most cases though I give the edge to MAD for the insane style of the latter half, but Innocent Arrogance is far tighter affair. Its themes and stories are more apparent and accessible to fans of the series, and it has a more unique style throughout with the harsh highlights and lighter/softer color palette through most scenes.
Hells Paradise - Work
youtube
I might avoid the anime like it's the plague, but you do have to give credit for the opening. Solid on all fronts, it has a unique style that sells the characters and world incredibly well, all tied together by very fluid and dynamic camera movements. Plus, Millenium Parade on an opening is always appreciated. I would still say it's comfortably below the first two in terms of quality though. The stories told through visuals in the above are just out of this world.
Skip and Loafer - Mellow
youtube
The song title for this one is very fitting. It's an incredibly comfortable, fun, and warm opening that does a lot with how little it shows. As expected, the color design is wonderful and has the perfect vibe for being a slice of life. The icing on the cake though is the dance sequence. Full of energy and joy, it tops off the wonderfully full feeling that this opening gives viewers.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury - Slash
youtube
Potentially hot take for this one, but while the opening is solid, it's how it teases the story that allows it to be superior. The pieces that are placed in plain view that we're only able to understand in hindsight is where the appreciation for this one comes from. The pieces that aren't directly tied to that comparison are solid, but I wouldn't say they're amazing. The best non-teaser though has to be the scenes of Miorine underwater and in a fractured crystal, as they reflect her mental state without placing anything in front of the viewer to compare it to.
The Legendary Hero Is Dead - Shinda!
youtube
This one really surprised me, between Masayoshi Ooishi performing divorced from the other half of OxT and a relatively unknown pair of directors for the opening, a very impressive effort was given for something incredibly memorable. Aggressive colors and storyboarding, a campy feel that plays right into the spiraling shots and lower quality CGI. It presents something incredibly memorable but without an incredible amount of effort expended in pursuit of it. Great example of a solid OP on a (resource) budget.
Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage - Gold
youtube
There's not much to say here other than the geniuses over at WIT did it again. A wonderfully executed opening that chronicles the journeys of our various characters as they join Bojji on his adventures. It's incredibly cute and heartwarming, and one of these days I'd love to break down how perfectly it rehashes the story of Season 1 into an energetic and hopeful opening that punctuates the intermediate stories of this season. Also, WIT is yet to miss on song choices for these openings.
Dead Mount Death Play - Nero
youtube
I think this opening is the one with the most wasted potential out of the ones I've seen this season. There's some really incredible shots and ideas through it with stuff like looking through the eyes of characters and what they see, but at the same time there's quite a few bog standard pieces that fill out the build up to the crescendo of this OP. I wouldn't say I'm disappointed as I wasn't expecting anything out of this world, but I think if the team pushed themselves a little more they could have had a huge creative breakthrough.
Also, you should 100% go watch the MV that was made the song itself. It's animated by a single person and is entirely out of this world in execution. Amazing work.
youtube
And that's about all the very notable ones I have to talk about. There's some I was disappointed with like MahoYome's new OP that was rather restrictive, or the unremarkable nature of Demon Slayer (Zankyou Zanka >>> Akeboshi >> Gurenge >>>> Kizuna no Kiseki ) or Dr. Stone's latest openings. While there was certainly let downs and disinteresting openings, there was also evidently quite a few surprises and dark horses that appeared through the season. Overall, it's really enjoyable seeing how much a lot of newer shows are finding inventive ways to deliver creative and memorable openings.

I already thought King Desha was a cool character. But, Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage Episode 4 made me like him even more.

Since I'm running uber late (how are we already on week 4?!), I decided to skip my usual anime pick livestream so I can catch up 😅
Here's what I'm watching for the Spring 2023 anime season. I'm kinda proud of myself for "only" having 18 picks this time compared to last season's 24 😂🤣
I'm excited to watch:
The Ancient Magus' Bride S2 - I've been waiting for this for a looooooong time!
Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion - I was about to read the webtoon for this when I heard it was getting an anime!
Oshi no Ko - ANN kept posting about this on their social media and I can never resist cute twins in the first place 😆
My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 - Same story as Oshi no Ko, also, my rom-com picks from last season are all done and it left me wanting more 😍
My surprise picks:
Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage - Only a surprise cause I didn't hear about this.
Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts - I actually remember this being announced and totally forgot about it! I read the manga a long time ago, so this is one of those rare ones where I know exactly what I'm getting into
Tengoku Daimakyo - This is my attempt to get some culture in me since all I've been watching lately are trash 😂🤣
I'm expecting to drop:
The Aristocrat's Otherworldly Adventure - It's isekai trash so it'll totally depend on how cringe this harem is gonna be 😅
KamiKatsu - exact same reason as above 😆
Purple = I'm definitely watching
Yellow = I'm giving it 3 ep. to win me over

First Impression: Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage
Tumblr media
Best boy Bojji is back in Ranking of Kings: The Treasure Chest of Courage, which in episode one features two shorts. The first, “Kage’s Errand,” begins with Despa becoming despondent after discovering an age spot on his face. In fact, he’s so upset that he won’t continue training Bojji unless he’s able to eat a shuddercap, a type of mushroom known for beautifying faces. Kage takes on the task, but finding the fungus to be a rare commodity, has to head into a forest, where a fearsome monster he’s been warned of may not be the creature he originally envisions. In the second short, Despa is again causing trouble (“Oh, Despa”). He demands a higher payment out of Bojji and Kage, who then try to find work to make up for the shortfall. They finally find something that Bojji can excel in, but when a young girl in need comes to their business, the two must decide if they should treat her differently than any other customer.

i need more Big Four content. for research purposes obviously.
Tumblr media
a commentary on the seventh episode. spoilers below cut.
like what was it like before season one's plot? welcoming Apeas was hard for Dorshe, but how did they bond as the first two before Bebin came in? (they did get along, okay! captured from ep 13.)
Tumblr media
did anything improve after Bebin came out of the underworld? did they see Domas as an absolute kid or what? what happened after the battle with Ouken? did they hold grudges against each other but kept it together while Bojji was king? gosh, just thinking about it either makes my head hurt or makes me wanna laugh.
like what's with them istg...
Tumblr media
...what's the beef!? to the point you imagined him to push yourself to max??
Tumblr media
but Bebin and Apeas always had the coolest fight scenes, and it's equally neat seeing it from a distance instead of following the motion like in the og series...
Tumblr media
does this mean Bebin had a field day when Daida sent him to slay Apeas? I'm cackling.
Tumblr media
did Daida grow up seeing them having this undercurrent tension of distaste to say 'always' or this is just after he got back on the throne? (but I think he must've known about Bebin and Apeas' beef at some point)
Tumblr media
well, you sent them to assassinate each other, lad. take responsibility.
dorupeas do take care of the younger ones tho.
Tumblr media
them watching Domas getting into his own mess but then be like "oh i can mess with my brother, you can't!"
Tumblr media
concerned parents of the friend group. nothing else to see here.

part two here for more of braems babbling ^^

Ousama Ranking Season 2 Episode 5: The Law of The Underworld | A White Horse In Love | The Gentle Soldier, Hokuro
Tumblr media
So I heard you wanted to put filler in your anime? Well, Ousama Ranking is effectively the gold standard for filler. Sorry, I don't make the rules. I just know something's good when I see it. Contextualizing previous events, exploring characters in more detail and where they find their starts and how they wormed their way into the story, and just plain dumb fun. This new season/OVA of Ousama Ranking does it all and then some, putting to shame entire series.
First thing's first though, this episode is more like two parts plus an interlude, if that makes sense. It's a piece about Ouken and the Underworld, followed by a brief break with Despa's horse Hakuo, and then followed about with Hokuro's story.
Let's go in order though, at least, meaning we'll start with the story of Ouken. This one was rather surprising, I wouldn't say it's simple but is has a strong beat to how the story's approached, and I'd say I definitely like it. Risking your life to find an answer to a curse is a brave thing to do, and I think they framed it well enough. It doesn't come off too preachy or out of touch with the core of Ousama Ranking, but stretches it just enough to get something different yet believable out of it.
Tumblr media
In terms of what I didn't expect from this story, was that we find out just how Despa comes into contact with the people that he uses to test Bojji. A really interesting little detail that just serves to help flesh out that side of things, taking the opportunity to explain details and provide exposition on things they might not have otherwise been able to. Just feels like the perfect example of good filler in that regard, as it's telling its own story while weaving pieces of the main story into it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Past that, I don't really think there's much else to say about this part of the episode. Well done, very well animated and storyboard, and enjoyable to watch. Though not as enjoyable as the Hakuo interlude.
This part was just pure comedy, and I loved every second of it. That's all there is to it, funny humor that gives viewers a break during the episode and runs with the freedom that filler/OVA gives teams.
And last but not least, Hokuro. Man, I really really liked this one. It's a great little story to show just how much Hokuro likes Bojji, and the impact he made on his life at a low point. It's incredibly endearing and heartwarming, and goes really far to show just how dedicated Hokuro is to Bojji.
Whether it's through learning sign language so he can talk with him, or becoming a soldier just so he can work in the same castle that Bojji lives in, or even putting his life on the line for the little prince when nobody else would. His character shows so much dedication and passion that Bojji was able to bring him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And, of course, WIT goes all out for the episode once more. Creative and full of life and style, and the environment art continues to be absolutely stunning. Really, I'm going to run out of praise before this season ends. There's just too much good about each episode, so I've exhausted my vocabulary explaining them, and well, they're not massively important or big story developments, so there's not a world of stuff to talk about with them. Just an outstanding continuation for Ousama Ranking all around.

I’ve decided “Ranking of Kings” may be my current favorite wholesome anime (which admittedly, is perhaps a relative term, but in the scheme of shows I’ve seen, I’d say it’s fairly wholesome). Also, Treasure Chest of Courage could use more Despa. There can always be more Despa. The vibes are iconic, please and thank you.
