Beasts of No Name
I write this under candlelight. It is technically saturday, December 18. The electricity has yet to return in our area; we suspect the post connecting to our area has been compromised. We had just arrived from my aunt's house in a different barangay where we ate Pochero for dinner, and charged our flashlights and portable electric fans. Prior to that, we attended the Simbang Gabi mass - the third of the nine day novena. We also bought food, supplies, and wooden utensils in SM City. It seems no typhoon could stop devotees and dedicated shopers alike from reaching their destination.
But we are lucky.
Despite the personal damages, it is only minimal. The tall malunggay tree could be chopped branch by branch with the binangon. Its leaves could still be boiled and cooked in tinola soup. The shattered window in the comfort room could be replaced; the dented roof fixed. Other cities and provinces had much worse. My classmate worries because they could not contact their relatives in Siargao. A family friend weeps for when howling wind blew their roof away, the battering rain spared none of their clothes. In Bohol and Negros Occidental, murky waters turn nipa houses and sugar cane fields into islets. I need not go further to witness the devastation Odette has left my city. Some roads in Leganes and other towns remain inaccessible.
The aftermath, however, falls short in capturing the helplessness of man when faced with the unrestrained typhoon upon its reckoning. What remains, instead, are glimpses of that cosmic encounter - galvanized iron sheets stripped away from steel frames, speedboats lurched upwards into reclaimed streets, electric posts bent inwards; the giant Christmas tree in Fuente Osmeña robbed of its light and towering height.
Odette is only one of the many typhoons that has wrecked my country, the Philippines. She is not the first nor probably will it be the last to incur such damage. Perhaps this is why words matter. Pictures and numbers, while evocative, could only do so much in the uphill battle towards matters concerning climate change. But stories? They capture the soul in media res and preserve its gallantry and gore in equal measure.
As I write this, Odette is gaining speed and moving westward. It is forecasted she will leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility, though some predictions fear she will make a comeback for Northern Luzon. But tonight, the moon shines bright above howling beasts of no name. There is no more wind to wreck my mother's peaceful sleep. There is only the memory of dawn splintering into a thousand wailing women, and the weeping, for what was lost in the stillness.

Alaves who were beaten in the last season final will play Formentera, who stunned Athletic Bilbao in the previous round, while Las Palmas take on Valencia, Espanyol play Levante and Leganes were pitted with Villarreal in three clashes between top flight sides.

<p>It was on 15-Feb, when PSG had humiliated Barcelona where they defence co-ordination and offense lacked spark. Messi and co were made to look like mere mortals. All media and even Barca all but conceded that Champions league is obver for them. In history of Champions league, no team had come back from 4-0 deficit till date. Barcelona had 3 weeks to get redy for the reverse leg. In between they had 4 La Liga games to get some form back. They had 2 major areas to improve upon. Get their defense act together as they have conceded too many goals so far this season. 2nd areas was Neymar's form which was in major downfall. Messi was also not at his best. Suarez was lone player who was keeping barcelona alive. Barcelona started by winning close game against leganes 2-1. Major challenge and their etst of character came against Athletico MAdrid. They were tested to the core defense wise in that match which they won in dying minutes due to Messi late magic. Barcelona then thrashed SPorting and Celta Vego. They scored 11 goals in last 2 matches and just conceded 1. Neymar got his foot back. Messi even made a gesture after Celta Viga match that they needed similar 5-0 line to beat PSG and they would do it. 2nd leg started in blistering fashion for Barcelona as Suarez scored a goal inside penalty. PSG defense tried blocking but had crossed the line. They kept attacking througout first half. Just before interval, Kurzawa's own goal gave Barce 2-0 lead. Aggregate stood at 4-2. At 61st mnute, now PSg lead 5-3 by aggregate with 1 away advantage as well. So Barcelona had to make it additional goal else be knocked out. Barce kept trying though and created lots of chances. In 88nd minute, Barcelona got a free kick just outside the square. Neymar took a fantastic kock towards the left side of the goal . Wall should have made better attempt to stop. Keeper's effort was also not upto the mark. This was drama of highest quality. Match of supreme class. Barce still needed a goal to make it through. Else PSG would qualify on away goal advantage.Neymar, who delivered a stunning performance, turned provider for substitute Roberto, who poked home his first goal of the season as the Nou Camp exploded. Neymar was the star, Suarez was the strategist and Messi the goto man. Trio is back and how. BARca have raised the BAR of OPTIMISM proving that "Nothing is impossible". 3 weeks back, La Liga laggged way behind in La Liga and champions league looked out of hand. Now Copa Del ray , la Liga and Champions league all look possible with this form. </p>
<p>In other champions league match, Dortmund thrashed Benfica 4-0 to win 4-1 on aggregate. Arsenal who trailed by 5-1 from first leg lead by 1-0 by interval raising hopes of Wenger. But last 20 minutes was disastrous for Arsenal as they conceded 5 goals to Bayern. It was 10-2 aggregate for German giants. This was the last nail in the coffin of Wenger's exit. His firing note will come anytime now.</p>
<p>In first test vs NZ, SA made a credtable 308. They were 252-4 at stage with Elgar century being the brigjt spot.boult and co then instigated the collapse in SA lineup. Williamson's unbeaten 78 ensured NZ responded well. NZ ended day 2 at 177-3. Taylor was retired hurt of a bouncer.</p>

PV SIndhu thrashed Ayustine 21-12 21-4 to reached QF. Tougher matches are coming ahead though. But its exciting both have reached QF.The only Indian men's singles player left in the second round, Prannoy failed to mount a challenge against Chinese seventh seed Tian Houwei, losing 13-21, 5-21 in 33 minutes. SHrikanth had earlier lost in first round.</p>
