The Secret Sauce: Spice Up Your Life With Creativity, Culture and Community
Join us at 8:15am at Jane's Restaurant to explore the CreativeMornings global theme of SPICY, featuring speaker Jackie Wild.
As a young boy growing up in the rural farmlands of Southern Leyte, Jackie's father spent countless hours in the kitchen alongside his mother, cooking up tasty traditional Philippine dishes. Since immigrating to Canada in the 1980s, he dreamed of opening a restaurant where he could serve the same nostalgic meals from his homeland and childhood.    Over four decades later, Jackie turned this pipe dream into a reality by penning a business plan while on maternity leave from her career in the corporate sector. Taking a collective leap of faith, this father-daughter duo opened Tito Boy Restaurant's doors to their kababayan (fellow country people) and the broader community in October 2022.    As the first Philippine eatery in the south end of Winnipeg, Tito Boy's offers a safe, welcoming space for building intergenerational and intercultural connections. The purpose of this communal gathering place is not only about serving delicious food—it's about sharing and celebrating the lived experiences of our Philippine-Canadian diaspora.    Join us for engaging conversation and delightful bites with Jackie at the upcoming CreativeMornings session. During this talk, she will unpack the unconventional path that enabled her to unlock her creative potential and launch her own business.
About our Speaker: Jackie Wild
Jackie Wild | Founder, Tito Boy Restaurant & Founder, Delight Digital   Jackie Wild is a seasoned communications and marketing professional with over a decade of experience managing successful community-focused initiatives within the public, private and non-profit sectors. As a racialized woman in business, she understands the critical role anti-racism advocacy plays in advancing equitable outcomes for her kababayan (fellow country people) and the broader business community.   In 2022, Jackie launched Tito Boy Restaurant, Winnipeg's first south-end Philippine eatery, offering traditional and fusion culinary creations. The business, named after her father, Agustin "Tito Boy" Doming, represents the intersectionality of different generations and what it means to be a Philippine-Canadian in the modern era.   A champion of community building, Jackie serves as president of the Manitoba Filipino Business Council, leading their vision to serve as the prime community resource hub for Philippine business people and professionals. Jackie also volunteers as board secretary with the Manitoba Museum, small business advisory council co-chair with The Winnipeg Chamber, interview chair with the Loran Scholars Foundation and board member with the Health Sciences Centre Foundation.   In 2020, Jackie was named one of CBC Manitoba’s Future 40 recipients and featured in the Filipino Journal’s 20 Filipinos to Watch list.
APRIL CREATIVEMORNINGS THEME: SPICY
Tumblr media
April’s Theme is SPICY.
When you’re cooking, spices add flavor, depth, and complexity to an otherwise plain culinary dish. Spicy foods interact with receptors in our mouth and can trigger sensations of heat and even pain. Can you handle it? Being open to trying new and bold tastes is a good lesson for bringing daring and originality into all of our creative endeavors. As they say, “variety is the spice of life.”
Our Tucson chapter chose this month’s exploration of SPICY and Sophie McTear illustrated the theme.

The Philippines. Manila and Boracay Basics: Top Things to Know Before You Go
youtube
What You Need to Know About the Philippines, Manila and Boracay
My month-long Philippines trip is just around the corner and I wanted to put together a short intro to the Philippines, Manila and Boracay.
The Philippines: What You Need to Know
The Philippines is an archipelagic country in Southeast Asia, in the Pacific Ocean. The Philippines is made up of 7,640 islands, 2,000 of which are inhabited. The country is broadly categorized in three main geographical divisions:
Luzon - This is the largest, northernmost island. Manila is a part of it.
Visayas - The major islands Panay, Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Samar, and Masbate.
Mindanao – In the south. This is the second largest island.
Manila: What You Need to Know
Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is a densely-populated metropolis located on a bay of Luzon (one of over 7,000 Philippine islands). Manila has a population of about 15 million in a 240 sq mi area, making it the most or one of the most densely-populated cities in the world.
The City of Manila is the capital of the Philippines and is made up of 16 administrative districts like Binondo, Ermita, Intramuros, Malate, Quiapo, and more.
The greater Metropolitan Manila area or Metro Manila is officially called the National Capital Region (NCR). Metro Manila made up of cities like the City of Manila, Makati, Quezon City, Parañaque, Pasay, Taguig, and more.
Boracay: What You Need to Know
With its powdery white-sand beaches and tranquil turquoise water, Boracay is a paradise on Earth. Boracay covers only 10km and the narrowest point is only 1km. Boracay is located in the western region of Visayas, in the Aklan province, under the jurisdiction of Malay.
Boracay has received various recognitions from top travel magazines such as the Best Island in Asia award from Travel + Leisure and the Top Island in the World from Condé Nast Traveler.
The most popular beach in Boracay is the White Beach (it’s also the biggest), but there are many other world-class beaches exist such as Puka Shell Beach, Bulabog Beach, Diniwid Beach and Ilig-Iligan Beach.  All these beaches have white sand and they are unique their own ways.
Boracay White Beach is divided into 3 sections: Station 1, 2 and 3. These stations are essentially the north, middle and south parts of the beach.
Station 1: Wider Beach & Luxury Resorts
Boracay’s famous visual landmark Willy’s Rock is in Station 1. Here you will find most of the luxurious hotels and resorts. Station 1 is comparatively quieter than Station 2.
The water is shallow and the beach is wider here with no separate walking path. Station 1 has the finest stretch of white sand.
Only a few clubs are in the same proximity within a short walking distance if you want to enjoy the Boracay nightlife.
Station 2: The Centre
This is the middle part of Boracay and the most crowded, with an assortment of shops and restaurants. You will find many mid-range hotels and resorts. The water is still shallow but not as much like Station 1.
The biggest D’mall sits right in the middle of Station 2. There is a seafood market, D’Talipapa, located in the south. You will find lots of bars, live music, and 3 clubs where you can experience the Boracay Nightlife.
Station 3: Nature and Tranquility
This is the quietest station with lots of greenery and lots of budget-friendly hotels. The beach is a lot steeper here. There are only a handful of laid-back bars and one club for nightlife.

Manila's Top Restaurants Feed School Children in Leyte
Tumblr media
At least 12 high-end restaurants in Manila have forged a partnership with Thrive Philippines, a non-government organization advocating an end to hunger, to finance a drive to feed school children in a poor community in Leyte and other areas in the country. Janelle Carlos, Thrive Philippines operations manager, said these restaurants include Gino’s Brick Oven Pizza, Bamba Bistro, Cyma (four branches), Souv! by Cyma (three branches), One World Butchers, Cafe Fleur, and Pardon My French.   “Each restaurant has selected a specialty dish and will contribute 10 percent of all sales of that item for the month of May to Thrive as part of commemorating World Hunger Day on May 28. Proceeds will finance the feeding of Filipino schoolchildren,” said Carlos, a young entrepreneur in this city.   These special dishes include Tiramisu at Gino's Brick Oven Pizza, Tindahan ni Maria Salad at Bamba Bistro, Roka Pasta at Cyma, Smoked Pork Belly at One World Butchers, Spiced Chicken a la Plancha at Cafe Fleur, and Butter-Lemon Barramundi at Pardon My French. Carlos said in an interview Thursday that donations would finance the existing feeding program for more than 200 children in Dawahon Island in Bato, Leyte. The other 200 recipients are students of City Gates Academy in Antipolo, Rizal; Coron, Palawan; and Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya. City Gates School has been providing free quality education to the poor and disadvantaged but deserving children in the community for free. Founded in 2012, Thrive’s mission is to deliver healthy food to hungry children in the poorest areas of the world and partners with schools to provide more than 12,000 meals to schoolchildren each week in Bangladesh and the Philippines to improve nutrition, boost school attendance, and increase readiness to learn.   Monica de Ocampo Casperino, president of Thrive Philippines, said in a statement: “It is truly heartening to see many of the top restaurants in the city join together to raise awareness of hunger, and to help feed children in need.” “We have more than 5,000 children at 20 schools on our waitlist, and through efforts like this, we will be able to increase our reach.”   In Dawahon Island, Thrive’s feeding program began in 2022, focusing on 220 elementary students identified as malnourished. Dawahon is an island community located at the Dawahon Reef near the tri-border of Cebu, Leyte, and Bohol. This fishing community has the highest population among the 32 villages in Bato town. In 2011, the Hunger Project created World Hunger Day, an initiative to highlight the plight of disadvantaged people around the world and take action to end world hunger. World Hunger Day is observed every May 28 to raise awareness about the more than 820 million people living in chronic hunger and to encourage action to bring this to an end.   Sources: THX News & Philippine News Agency. The Life of Rosello
This is a biography of Rosello Rodrigo. He was born in Calabuian, Leyte, Philippines, on April 20, 1965. His father, Constancio Rodrigo, was a corn and peanut farmer. His mother, Rotina Talle, is a partner in Constancio's farming. Rosello has four siblings, and he’s the second child of Constancio and Rotina. His parents might not have been able to give them a well-off life, but they were able to feed them and make them go to school.
Life for his parents back then was tough and challenging. They don’t get a lot of money from farming, and the money they get from farming is only enough for them to have a portion of food on the table. There were times when his mother would make peanut brittle or pili nuts for them to have an extra income. Since their earnings from farming and selling peanuts are too short, they can’t take all of their children to college, and only one of them finished high school.
Rosello Rodrigo also lived a life of farming. At a younger age, Rosello learns how to plant and harvest corn and peanuts; he also helps his mother every time she sells pili nuts and peanut brittle. Rosello Rodrigo, including his four siblings, helps with the work of their parents. Rosello Rodrigo is the only one who finished high school among the siblings. He finished elementary school at Butusan Elementary School and high school at Calubian High School. Both schools are near their house, which is why he only walks every time he goes to school. But sadly, his parents cannot afford to take him to college. Rosello Rodrigo already understands that because he knows what life they’re going through at that time. He knows that his parents are already trying their best to gain more money, but what they get from their work is not enough.
Rosello Rodrigo wants to find work so that he can help with his family. He found out that one of his neighbors was going to Quezon City. Telia Pabilada and some of her family, including a great friend of his parents, are planning to go to Quezon City. The Pabilada family is close to the Rodrigo family, which is why their children are also close to each other. Rosello didn’t want to waste the opportunity to find a way to help his family by finding a job in Quezon City. Rosello Rodrigo decided to come along with Telia Pabilada to Manila to find a job. Rosello Rodrigo’s family allows him to go with the Pabilada family since they have a big trust that they will guide Rosello.
In 1984, Rosello arrived in Quezon City and quickly found a job. He works as a dishwasher at the restaurant near the house of the Pabilada family, where he stays. His salary is not that high, but it is enough for him to send money to his family, which is a big help to his family. As he works as a dishwasher, Rosello likes to watch the chef cook. Until the time when he learned how to cook just by watching closely the chefs in the restaurant. Rosello also works as a waiter at the same restaurant. And that’s where he met Helen Leal. Helen Leal is also a waitress at the restaurant. Helen also came from their province and decided to go to Quezon City to find a job and send the money to her family in Manticao, Misamis Oriental.
Rosello Rodrigo fell in love with Helen and decided to court her. Later on, Rosello Rodrigo and Helen Leal enter into a relationship. Rosello Rodrigo introduces Helen to his family through phone calls and introduces her to the Pabilada family. Rosello and Helen have both continued to work at the restaurant for many years. Sometimes Rosello gets another job to save more money for his family at the Calubian and also for Helen. They worked hard to save money until they were finally ready to get married and start creating their own family.
In 1992, Rosello and Helen got married at San Antonio de Padua Parish in Manticao, Misamis Oriental. In the same year, Helen and Rosello had their own house at Riverside, Commonwealth, Quezon City. They both resigned from the restaurant they worked for, and Helen decided to be a sampaguita vendor. In that year, Helen Rodrigo introduced her cousin Edwin Castillo to Rosello Rodrigo. Edwin Castillo entered Rosello into the company he was working for. The salary is bigger than all the money that he gets from being a dishwasher or a waiter. In 1992, Rosello Rodrigo finally had a decent job with a good salary. He works as a factory worker. They both get money better than before, and they still continue to send some money to their parents.
Now Rosello Rodrigo is 52 years old and currently lives in Rodriguez (Montalban), Rizal. They had seven children: four girls and three boys. One of them died on April 6, 2018, due to a serious disease. Rosello doesn’t have a job right now with the factory because of the pandemic. So he and Helen are now both Sampaguita vendors. Five of their children now have their own college degrees and work. They know that all of their hardships are worth it since almost all of their children are close to becoming successful and having their own families. Their lives changed after they got married because they got to know each other and helped each other give their children the best life they needed.
I admire Rosello Rodrigo because, at such a young age, he manages to not only help but also understand his parents. He’s not retreating from every challenge that was given to him. He has a lot of perseverance and never forgets his family, even though he has his own family. Rosello faces a lot of problems, but he will not let those problems stop her from protecting and loving his family.

Chew Love's cute and dainty interior 🤍 Mama found this cute space online. I learned that from her. Whenever we would travel, she'd make sure to research places first and read reviews so we won't waste time going somewhere we won't enjoy.
Definitely did not expect to see anything like this in Tacloban. It's like a breath of fresh air. As someone who studied Interior Design for two years, I was really drawn to the pastel colors and cute figurines found around the restaurant. They also placed vintage inspired designs. There's also a vintage bike outside, by the door. The restaurant as a whole is full of color but not the distracting kind.
They offer good food, although they lean more on the pricey side, for some. Their serving is also cute since the rice is formed as a heart. They offer a variety of dishes from sandwiches to sides to mains to desserts and refreshment. Chew Love is definitely a cheerful spot in Tacloban. If you’re traveling to Leyte anytime soon, it’s definitely worth a stop. You can consider it as a tourist spot in Tacloban.
Would love to come back soon! 😋
Chew Love Tacloban Address: P. Gomez Street, Tacloban City Restaurant hours: Mondays to Saturdays 11:00 am to 8:30 pm; Closed on Sundays

Sucre Sucre is sugar in french. Sucreme Kitchen is a restaurant that offers sugar loading pastries, pasta and snacks. We were looking for dessert house or a cafe to chill. We only tried their chocolate cake, brownies, macaroons and leche flan. First, I tried their leche flan. I’m glad that it was not that sweet. The flan balances the sugar syrup. You know the flan is made up of pure egg. Second was the macaroons. It was freshly baked. It’s soft on the first bite and have just right amount of sugar in it. You know that the desiccated coconut was in it and no added extenders. Third was the brownies. It was oven fresh coz’ it is chewy. There were a few nuts on it. It was not that sweet and not that chocolatey. Fourth was this chocolate cake. Good thing that it was cold when served. You can taste the richness of the chocolate cream on cake. It was sweet and delightfully temptatious as they would say, I think most chocolates are tempting and illicitly desirable to consume. The only thing I was not amaze was the place okay. Also, I think the aircon was not on or not working at all when we came in, we were the only customers. I did not bother to ask. Luckily, I asked their staff if he can direct the wall fan on our area. So we will be comfortable eating while chitchatting. Still the pastries was wonderful, the service and the staff was okay. I would say overall, moderately good. #Sucreme #SucremeKitchen #LecheFlan #Macaroons #Brownies #ChocolateCake #Pastries #Bato #Leyte #francheskadora #binibinisugbu (at Sucréme Kitchen) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cf0_-FMLHb0UcYXw4pP5CYm9Xz22SUkmYxY-nU0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Name: Beata Cayadong Nickname: Atang/Bea/Bibi Race: manananggal Abilities: flight, stealth & agility; a keener sense of hearing and scent Quirks: currently works as one of The Diabolical’s staff; wants to be human; tries hard to either be vegetarian (ie - not eat humans) or to eat “ethically-sourced” meat; has the worst luck of falling for her boss’ eldest brother - carlos trese - a famous aswang hunter - after her saved her from getting kidnapped by a group of aswang; she's kikay personified! but don't let her catch you trying to take advantage of someone who's had too much to drink. the pink smoothie she's fond of isn't always strawberry.
She was found as a toddler and raised by a former mananabang (midwife) from Leyte named Eustiquia. The midwife is a middle-aged widow who didn’t have her own children, and her only companion is her dog named ‘Paghot’ (Bark - because he’s noisy!), and the villagers who would come to her for help. But Ekiang was then shunned by the community for raising a monster. The healer reasoned that Beata was nothing but a child - she was even christened by a priest from the next town - but the villager’s fears weren’t unfounded. Creatures of midnight are feared for a reason.
An opportunity to go to Manila came up, so Ekiang and Beata went to Manila and stayed with Ekiang’s sister. Ekiang was a hired help at an eatery ran by her sister's friend, while Bea - as she asked to be called since Atang sounds sooo probinsyana - attended the nearby public school and helped at the small restaurant during the weekends.
The story of how she met Alexandra Trese is honestly a ripoff of Promising Young Woman - only, unlike Cassie, Bea was able to get her revenge.
