Katniss is canonically an doting mother.

She has no problem carrying them as many times as they ask. Never ignore them when they are crying and never get angry when they're acting like children. She doesn't care about wet beds or glasses of juice spilled on the table.

Peeta finds it a little strange at the beginning. He was raise with punishment for the smallest accidents. His parents were never very affectionate with any of their children.

One day Katniss is tying Willow's shoes and he says something like "It's time to do it yourself, young lady"

"Take your time, Willow" Katniss say.

Which makes Peeta reflect. It reminds him of all the times he walked to school with his shoes untied because no adult wanted to tie them for him. It reminds him of how he used to be punished for his dirt-stained shoelaces when he came home from school.

When Rye wets the bed at almost five years old, Peeta's first instinct is to warn him, but Katniss says it first:

"Maybe we should drink less water before going to sleep"

Which reminds Peeta of how angry his mother would get when he wet the bed. The first time he remember being physically punished was after an incident like this . Remember how after that he tried to hide the wet bed with blankets and pillows and never spoke to anyone again.

And how Rye, in contrast, would wake him up in the middle of the night saying, "Daddy, I did it again." And Peeta let him sleep between him and Katniss instead of him lying in the wet bed like Peeta did when he was a child.

He shares some of these feelings with Katniss and she makes and he realizes how dysfunctional his family was. And how difficult it is not to repeat the same mistakes.

Peeta felt triggered when one of his children cried... He remembered how much worse it was for him if he cried. But Willow was only six years old and it was normal to cry like that, Peeta learned to wipe away her tears and teach her to regulate her emotions.

One day he caught her stealing some coins from the bakery's cash register. He stopped in complete shock looking at her. He felt fear spread through his body. He remember that it was for this reason that his mother beat his older brother. She took a wooden spoon from the kitchen and hit his hands fourteen times. The number of letters that are in the phrase "I shouldn't steal".

She made Peeta and his middle brother watch. Remember Bran's face turning red as he held back tears and spelled "s-t-e-a-l". When his father came home and saw Bran's hands red at dinner time he didn't ask what happened. Remember hearing Bran cry at bedtime that night.

He felt afraid for Willow.

"What are you doing?"

"I just want to buy some gum on the way to school" she said innocently, not seeming to realize the problem.

"You shouldn't take the coins from there. These money are from the bakery. If you want money to buy something you should ask me or your mother"

She returned the coins to the cash register and nodded.

One day Peeta realized that his children saw no other purpose for a wooden spoon other than stirring the food in the pan.

I like to imagine that I was there and saw that with my own eyes, lol (I really attended freestyle competitions at the Olympics, just no Rye(n) for me *cries*)

You have no idea how much I missed drawing Rye! I love every version of him, he is such a joy (totally fandom-made but still, lol). And oh, my city is now full of banners for Olympic Games anniversary so I just HAD TO DRAW THIS. I've been thinking about this for two months haha.

Her favorite uncle

Another short story about teenage Willow Everdeen Mellark, but this time at her home in District 12. She sneaked out to have some fun with her friends at night, and now she must face her parents. But no worries, uncle Haymitch is there to save the day, well kind of. I just wanted to write something about Haymitch being an old uncle/grandpa figure to Katniss and Peeta's daughter. In my mind she can be quite rebellious and impulsive, while still loving her family and wanting to make them proud. But she's also young and wants to have fun. I like thinking that between her and Haymitch there is a special bond, he listens to her and tries his best to guide her. And she trusts him deeply. Also, Willow and her brother (Rye) do get along and love each other, I just didn't develop their relationship that much this time. tw: mentions of underage drinking

The treacherous keys slip from my hands and hit the ground. I curse under my breath. At this pace, there’s no way I’ll get in the house without making any noise. Great. My head’s killing me and now I’ll have to come up with an excuse to explain my night out. I can see my parents’ face already. I think about my brother, biting his tongue, acting like he doesn’t know anything about me sneaking out. He’d never snitch on me, but I know how much he hates secrets. In this family trust is everything, and I respect that. But I just wanted to have some fun with my friends. Is that so wrong?

Under the night sky, I struggle to see the keys, and the drunkenness doesn’t help much. I finally find them and continue on my way, dragging my feet. I'm about to resign myself to the consequences when I notice light coming from Haymitch’s kitchen. Could he be awake at this hour? Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me. Curiosity drives me to stealthily approach his window and when I take a peek inside, I jump back startled. Sitting at the table, drinking something hot, is my old uncle Haymitch looking at me without an ounce of surprise. Mi mind is still somewhat confused, but if one thing’s for sure, is that I’m in trouble. And he knows it too. He points at the door with his thumb and his eyes leave no space for refusal.

As I enter the kitchen, I'm enveloped by the smell of coffee. With his back to me, he's making a second cup. I sit down and place my head on my arms.

"So, tell me, did you have fun, little one?" he asks handing me the drink.

"How did you know?" I mumble with my eyes closed.

"Your brother called me" I lift my head so fast I get dizzy.

"Hey, you know it’s not his fault. He’s just worried about you. You should be thankful he didn’t tell your parents, honey" and he’s right. I can’t blame Rye for anything. I’m the one who broke the rules.

"What about you? Why didn’t you say anything?"

"I think you’re old enough to fend for yourself. But if they found out, I won’t deny anything, you hear me?" he declares with an accusing finger.

"Thank you Haymitch" I offer him one of those smiles I use to soften him. They always work, even if he denies it.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Now drink your coffee and tell me what you’ve been up to over there"

There’s no point in hiding anything to him, he can read my mind without trying. So, I tell him all about the laughs, the dancing, the drinking and the gossip. We keep talking until dawn, and, even though he doesn’t judge me for my juvenile adventures, he asks me to be more responsible next time. Especially with my drinking. At times like this I wonder how his life used to be before I was born. Even if my family tries to be as honest as possible about their past, I know there’re things that are just too hard to explain. I understand that, so I don’t pressure them, but sometimes I can’t help but think about it.

When the phone rings, Haymitch tells my mom I had agreed to help him with his geese that morning. Apparently, I was so excited with the task that I had woken up extra early to enjoy breakfast with my favorite uncle. I doubt she bought it, but she didn’t ask more questions. Later I understand that she just wanted to laugh at my disastrous attempt to deal with those wild animals. Well, at least someone’s having a good time. With that said, I think I won’t drink again for a long, long time.

I saw this sound on TikTok (though I think its pretty old already?) and I just wanted to share it because its giving me a Katniss and Prim vs. Peeta and his brothers vibe 😂 Katniss is just so caring and loving with Prim and we never got any insight on Peeta’s relationship with his brothers but being 3 teenage boys who wrestle as a hobby and with Peeta being the youngest, I can imagine them affectionately beating each other up over the dumbest things (as brothers often do 😂) Anyway, here’s the sound:

Hi Anon, I could not open the link (could be b/c I don't have Twitter) but here is a little bit of sibling energy with a dash of Pining Katniss-rated T:

Katniss sat in the bleachers waiting for Prim to arrive from her after-school program. Her sister was invited to do a school beautification initiative. Katniss couldn’t care less about planting roses around the school. However, if her gentle sister wanted to make things look girly then Katniss was going to support Primrose.

There was a whistle blown and the wrestling team came out clad in sweats. Amongst them she spotted two blond bulky forms, one of them made her heart pound in her chest. Katniss wanted to shrink into herself as she raised the hood of her sweater.

Katniss questioned when HE had joined the wrestling team. Her mind quickly went over the timeline. This must have been recent.

The coach yelled at his brother Rye for a smart mouthed reply.

The wrestlers laughed and the coach told them to warm up. Katniss watched them stretch, run, and jump.

Her mouth ran dry when he removed his sweater and pants and was dressed scantily. The stretch uniform left nothing to the imagination. His blond arms were massive, bigger than his brothers. His shoulders were broad, and the two thin straps emphasized just how stocky he was. When he turned around and bent to pick up his shirt, Katniss felt her cheeks heating up. His butt made funny things happen to her in areas that were shameful. The reaction caused Katniss to snap her legs closed.

The whistle blew and Katniss caught herself staring at her boy with the bread. She quickly looked around to make sure no one caught her. She was not someone to ogle guys. Gale was after all good looking, but she never had any interest in awkwardly gawking at him.

But HIM.

Yowzah!

Peeta Mellark, the boy with the bread. It was hard not watching him. Katniss sighed and looked away. There was something beyond his looks that drew her to him. There was a bond between them that spanned time and space.

Katniss tried to act like watching him wrestle. She watched his brother jump on him and try to lock him down, but Peeta was too fast and clever.

Rye was getting frustrated. His face was red, and his blond hair hung limply around his face. Peeta laughed and suddenly he was free. Peeta stood up, his smile radiant and sweet. Rye tackled him to the ground.

Katniss stood ready to march down and beat Rye Mellark to a pulp when she heard her sister’s gentle voice.

“Thank you for waiting for me.”

Katniss was divided between addressing her sister and what was going down below. Internally Katniss pushed down her want to go defend him and turned to her sister. “It’s no problem. Did you plant flowers?”

“Yes, we planted the seeds,” Prim rushed out.

Katniss smiled as she buttoned her sister’s coat. “That’s exciting, though isn’t it too early to plant flowers. It’s not even spring yet.”

Prim laughed brightly. “Oh Katniss, don’t you know that in order for a flower to bloom, it has to gestate for a long time in the ground. It is just like love. It must be fostered before it can bloom.”

“Now that’s just silly talk,” Katniss said, as she led her sister down the steps of the bleachers.

Prim laughed again, as her sister began making quaking noises as they made their way to the exit.

On the mats, Peeta flipped his brother off him. Then walked to the side to drink water. He tracked Katniss and her sister as they left the gym.

“Are you done showing off,” Rye grimaced.

“Huh.”

“Come on Peet, I know you were showing off her,” Rye said in a hushed voice.

Peeta, coughed. “Not sure what you’re talking about.”

“Look Peet, I know you’re into the huntress. I get it she is something. But this is the last time I’ll let you win.”

Peeta cockily looked at his brother. “Let me win old man?”

Rye snorted. “Looser does the dishes tonight.”

“You’re on.”

What would have happened if

1. Katniss didn't volunteer for Prim, so Prim and Peeta compete in 74th Games.

2. Gale and Katniss compete.

3. Katniss and Peeta's brother compete. Before, he volunteered for Peeta.

The Questions :

A.What strategy would Haymitch made for District 12?

B.What would Katniss do to them? Would she become an ally with those 2 boys?

C.Who would be the winner in the end?

1. Cato would have won lololol unless Peeta made it his mission to save Prim for Katniss and still used his crush on Katniss to try and bring Prim home but that’s less compelling and wouldn’t have probably worked out

2. They would have probably butt heads or Gale would have refused to play the Capitol’s games and with Katniss still determined to get back home to Prim, I feel like Gale wouldn’t have been much benefit to her. Not with Cato and the other Careers. And even though Gale is canonically really hot, the Sponsors would have had Thresh and Cato who are bigger but exude the same “back off” attitude and so therefore Gale probably would have died earlier on in the games. Because he wouldn’t have joined the Careers or tried to play at some strategy. Gale was, at the point of the first book, too straightforward with how to deal with the Capitol, and would have probably gotten a target on his back with the other tributes and been the one they hunted down. So best case scenario, imo, Gale would have gotten killed early on and left Katniss alone in the arena. Or worst case, he would have gotten a target on Katniss’ back too. And this isn’t taking into account little Rue, who Gale probably would have had some conflict with allying with because he’s not a monster she’s a little kid he probably would have been angry she was even there but also wouldn’t have wanted Katniss to partner with her because it weakened their chances of survival and so therefore Gale probably would have gotten angry about Rue’s presence and done some small act of rebellion towards the Capitol and gotten himself killed by the Gamemakers if the tributes hadn’t done the job yet. And then maybe Katniss would have also been a target of the Gamemakers too? All in all, it would have been a very bad idea to have them both in the first arena.

3. I feel like there would have been so little contact with Katniss and Brother Mellark. Maybe she would have acknowledged what his little brother did for her years ago and tried to help Brother Mellark to pay Peeta back? Or maybe she would have just internalized it and felt even more guilty and then, after she won all by herself, gone to Peeta and apologized to him for not helping his big brother more and maybe thanked him for throwing her that bread years ago? And maybe that would have been their “this would have happened anyway” story? Well anyways I digress.

A. Haymitch’s strategy with Peeta and Prim probably would have been just straight up strength for Peeta and for little Prim… maybe sympathy? Idk, Suzanne said Haymitch waited for a tribute like Katniss all those years he was a mentor so maybe he would have sighed and said he’d try next year with different tributes and drank away his guilt and self-hate. His strategy with Katniss and Gale would have been to have them use their hunting, probably try to get them to fake a romance but with Gale not willing to play the Capitol’s games and also not wanting to perform for the Capitol’s audience, then I doubt it would have worked out well for them. So in the end Haymitch would have probably hated Gale more than he disliked Katniss at first and Gale and him would have had a contentious relationship which would have deflected also onto Katniss and Haymitch’s relationship too. Disaster on all sides. And then idk I feel like Haymitch might have used Peeta’s brother’s wrestling and strength the same way he used Peeta’s but somehow it probably wouldn’t have worked out the same way. Katniss wouldn’t have had the same connection with Peeta’s big brother or his brother wouldn’t have liked Katniss because she was too standoffish or from the Seam. And therefore it would have made it impossible for Haymitch to make them into a team. And then Haymitch probably would have just chosen Katniss alone and left Brother Mellark to do his own thing/just use his strength alone with no ploy to play up the sponsors.

B. She definitely would have allied with Gale obviously but as I said above, I’m doubtful it would have ended as well as it did with Peeta. And I doubt she would have allied with Brother Mellark unless it was out of convenience like Maysilee and Haymitch.

C. Either Katniss would have won alone or Cato would have. I can’t see Gale and her partnership starting a revolution or bringing them both home. And I definitely cannot even see Brother Mellark and Katniss making their alliance last to the end of the games lololol.

Learned some important things in this chapter --

One, I've had to move to digital linework. It just makes edits easier.

Two, I need to give myself more time if I want higher quality. I'm happy with the art of this chapter, but it falls under 'good and acceptable'. Balancing edits, life, and the fact that I work in Pharmacy during flu season means I had less time than I'd hoped, and I just accepted I wanted to get this chapter OUT. I didn't want to make people wait longer.

So bi-weekly updates moving forward, but Patreons will see weekly pages as I finish edits and pages.

This has already turned into a great learning process and excited to continue it! I also would LOVE to hear your thoughts on Peeta's brothers~ I know there is quite the debate about their names.

LETTERS FROM NEW PANEM - extra snippets

- Thom's parents and little brother died when he was 13, of pneumonia. He was taken to the community home and kept on quarentine for a month, before being mixed with the rest of the kids. He and Delly get married the day after she turns seventeen. They have a VERY active sex life. Their first daughter is born on the first day of winter but her name is Summer.

-Gale moved to District Two, and I couldnt care less what he's been up to.

-Prim and Mrs Everdeen move to District 4. By the time Katniss gets married to Peeta, Prim is finished with her nursing training, so she comes back for the wedding and she stays in Twelve for a couple of years, to get some "real life" experience before moving on with her studies.

-Reese Donner takes over his his parents sweetshop, and he provides an ample ammount of gummybears for K and P's toasting, because he knows she loves them. He barely recognizes Prim, who's nearly as tall as him and with a slight tan. He gets injured a lot after that.

- Madge and Rye live together in town. He runs a restaurant right next to the bakery and she's the kindergarten teacher. She still refuses to marry him even after being together for ten years and all the kids calling her Mrs Mellark.

Idk why but it’s set in my head that once district 12 comes alive again and there’s children and schools and all, Peeta volunteers to coach the boys at wrestling. It’s a part of his old life, something I bet he associates very strongly with his brothers. So it’s a way for him to heal and keep that part of him and his relationship with his brothers alive.

I truly believe Katniss helps at the bakery. A bakery is too complicated to work alone, Peeta even hires someone to help, but it's Katniss who is his other half.

She works at the counter and keeps the kitchen organized while Peeta prepares the bread and heats the ovens.

Katniss is extremely resourceful and finds a way to learn.

When the first baby is born, Katniss takes some time off and Peeta tries to spend as little time at the bakery as possible. After the war, victorious tributes no longer receive any type of financial aid. So they can't actually close the bakery.

When the girl is old enough, Katniss brings her to the bakery in the morning and puts her to sleep in the storeroom while they both work. The babies learn to take naps in the middle of flour sacks like Peeta did when he was a baby.
