i definitely think you’re onto something about ronan (or perhaps a different dreamer(s?)) dreaming the mods? after learning that b was dreamt up, it seemed all the more possible to me that ronan or other dreamer(s) could’ve created a physical manifestation of their feelings of fear, loneliness, isolation, etc.
in a similar vein i think this relates to what the Lace represents for hennessy. reading the scene about her mother’s painting and the lace pattern thing, i definitely made that connection too. it was clearly a time of great stress/distress and fear, hopelessness, rejection, etc in her life that relates to hennessy’s current insecurities and worries. i think maybe the Lace is like a physical dream/nightmare version of that, the emotions she fears might consume her. as much as she tries not to show them in waking life, she can’t escape them in dreams.
BELOVED. i can't even remember the last time i posted about this. thank you for (a) reading my posts from month ago, love you, and (b) giving me an excuse to word vomit about this again
i have been discussing this AT LENGTH with ryn (@parrished) because we're both insane. i'm gonna put my thoughts under the cut though because i have very very many
(as always, i don't claim to be right about any of this. i'm just theorizing)
so, while a month ago i completely agreed with both of those things, my latest thought has been this: what if what's happening here is not that ronan and hennessy created these entities because of the way they were feeling, but rather that, due to their vulnerable emotional states, they were chosen to manifest already existing entities?
if we think of the dreams we enter not as our own creations, but as a different plane of existence that we can only enter in our sleep, then we can also imagine that this plane exists even when we're not there. and then we can imagine that maybe bryde and the lace existed in this plane before ronan and hennessy knew them. maybe not in the form we know them in now, but still. we already know something like this is possible because we saw it with cabeswater. ronan didn't invent it - he just gave it a shape. think about how carmen and liliana talk about the lace. they don't think hennessy has control over it the way bryde and ronan believe she does. so maybe she didn't invent it, either. maybe it's something autonomous, something with ulterior motive, that saw an opportunity in a deeply sad little girl with the power to bring it into the world. it takes the form of a memory that haunts her not because she came up with it herself, but because it's purposefully manipulating her
so what i'm saying is, bryde and the lace might differ from cabeswater in that they might have the power to choose who brings them out into the world. into our plane of existence. let me focus on bryde now. we already know he can access the minds of other dreamers. what if, when he does so, he's searching for a dreamer vulnerable enough, lonely enough, to dream him out of the plane he's trapped in? the ley lines are his key to living an untethered life, but he needed someone to give him an earthly form in order to access them - who better than sad, abandoned (and super powerful) ronan? bryde said "ronan, you dreamt me", and maybe it wasn't a lie - ronan did take him out of his dreams and give him a shape like he gave cabeswater - but maybe it wasn't the full truth either. just because ronan dreamt him doesn't mean he created him
and here is where i turn to completely undeveloped speculation, so proceed with caution (and a grain of salt)
i spend a lot of time thinking about nathan farooq-lane and what his connection to bryde is, because there must be one, right? what if ronan isn't the first dreamer to be manipulated into dreaming bryde? what if nathan was the last one to do it, before he went rogue? he died at the very beginning of cdth, and, shortly after, we see bryde appear in ronan's dreams for the first time. was he vanished back to the dream plane because his tether was gone? the fixation on scissors becomes interesting if we consider that nathan might have been inextricably connected to an entity he manifested, one with access to his thoughts. one he maybe very badly wished he could be rid of. there are a lot of gaps in this theory that i don't know how to explain, but i'm just Thinking Thoughts here. i feel like there has to be some sort of bryde/nathan link that we just haven't seen yet

This update is so... late 😭 it was supposed to come out on the 7th, then the 8th, and now it’s the 10th so three updates this month it is!
So! I finished the first chapter of In the Woods Somewhere, and I’m almost done the first chapter of I Know the End! I started I Know the End a little late into the month so I’m really pleased to make some progress on it already. In the Woods Somewhere has turned from a short story, to a novella, to a full novel, and this is the first shot I’m taking at the novel version. Creating new characters and expanding on old ones has been so fun. Even if I’m stuck on chapter two now. 🤧
Further notes, excerpts, and taglist under the cut!
In the Woods Somewhere
I finished chapter one! I actually struggled a lot with not giving too much exposition like I had in the previous versions of this wip, but I think I’m happy with what I ended up with. Saoirse’s voice is easy to write, she’s been the only main character for soo long but as soon as I hit Henry’s first chapter (this is my first time doing dual povs too help) I was stuck. I should’ve done writing exercises for him, but I didn’t and now 😐 I will get past it, though
I thought that Evanthe would definitely make an apperance in chapter one, but I ended up cutting her and Saoirse’s meeting entirely and moving it to chapter three. I might regret that later lol
So instead of that, chapter one is mostly Saoirse musing on her decision, sneaking out, and escaping. Like this

Not a ton to show off from this chapter but I think these parts are neat 🏄‍♀️
She’d thought about rolling over and taking it; had thought that maybe living out the rest of her life idly, feigning ignorance, would be easiest. Spend her days with Henry and Catherine, and not think about what awaits her. Indulge Henry in all his little wants, impose on Catherine once more just to listen to her tell stories all night. Let them remember her as she was, and vow not to make a sound.
She wondered if she could convince Henry to sell her a hunting rifle, if her hands would shake as she pointed it beneath her chin, or if they’d be steady, resigned to her choice.

I Know the End
I Know the End, my beloved 💞 I started this a few days into April and it suddenly replaced the other wip I was gonna work on instead (rip Orpheus). I chose to write in first person with the secondary main character referred to as “you” throughout mostly because I wanted to get deep into Bridgette’s head & explore how she handles Isabelle leaving their church and her revelations following it.
My two other main wips are both set in the past, so writing something modern is so nice 😭 Chesley (the town it’s set in) is based on a small town I like semi grew up in with the nice glowy diner the next town over and a church on every corner & I can’t wait to get further into it and explore the isolation and the fear and the self loathing that comes with growing up gay in a small conservative Christian town and what happens when your world is flipped because your only friend is excommunicated and wants to run away. And then God starts talking to you, and things get really crazy...
Only one excerpt since most of this chapter is all over the place 😭
I don’t tell you that while you were gone, I hardly left my house. It doesn’t matter; the gossip reached me anyway. I’m able to fill you in on who’s cheating on who, who broke up quietly, who broke up loudly, and who had drama on Maple right in front of the gas station attendant who told his sister, who told her best friend, who told her cousin, who told her aunt, who told my mom, who told me.

Realizing that I haven’t exactly posted much about my dearly beloved D&D character, Ryn (AND that this is my blog and I can do what I want), I’m gonna make some things about her and her backstory, because I’m in a moment of time where I can actually give a lot more thought about it than I was originally able to (also playing her helped me figure out things on the way). So we’re gonna start with those character questions:
What would completely break your character?
Her flock and/or her family getting killed.
What was the best thing in your character’s life?
Receiving a direct message of support from Syranita in her decision to leave the nest for an adventuring lifestyle.
What was the worst thing in your character’s life?
The all-out rejection and scorn from her flock towards her life decision.
What seemingly insignificant memories stuck with your character?
When Kerri got all flustered at the party offering advice(?)/support towards her attraction towards Helleboris despite her usual confidence and casualness towards talking/communicating with just about everyone.
Does your character work so that they can support their hobbies or use their hobbies as a way of filling up the time they aren’t working?
Hobbies are her way of filling up the time when she’s not working (although her work is also kind of a hobby, so a hobby to occupy time when the other hobby isn’t happening?)
What is your character reluctant to tell people?
How desperately homesick she gets, even though she knows she’s not wanted back there anymore.
How does your character feel about sex?
Ryn had a few... Pleasant encounters when she was still with the flock, but seeing as there haven’t been much in the way of aarakocra during her travels (which is all she’s used to), it hasn’t crossed her mind as much. But boy howdy if we run into a hawk at some point she’s not even gonna be able to form a coherent sentence other than flustered hoos.
How many friends does your character have?
She lost all of the ones she had back with the flock, but she likes to consider her current 4 companions as her friends.
How many friends does your character want?
Ryn would like to befriend anyone with good intentions and a willingness to exchange knowledge.
What would your character make a scene in public about?
A non-friend grabbing/touching one of her (Very Soft and Well Maintained) wings.
What would your character give their life for?
Protecting a close friend or saving her flock and/or family.
What are your character’s major flaws?
Impulsive at times, quick to play the “speak softly but carry a Big Stick” card, she will literally eat just about anything off of the ground, consistent loyalty and love towards her flock despite the fact most of them never want to see her again, Too Trusting of strangers.
What does your character pretend or try to care about?
Who the “original owner” of an abandoned, Very Shiny thing is. All of the care and attention people give to the shoes they wear even though they have perfectly good feet that work the same with or without shoes
How does the image your character tries to project differ from the image they actually project?
Helpful with a friendly disposition --> A THIRST for intimidation and power moves like holding direct eye contact with someone while eating An Entire Bug.
What is your character afraid of?
Being stuck in small spaces, losing friends due to decisions she made for herself, returning to her flock to discover they’ve all been wiped out.
What is something most people in your setting do that your character things is dumb?
Turning their noses up at PERFECTLY GOOD BUGS that are just WAITING to be plucked out of a tree and eaten.
Where would your character fall on a politeness/rudeness scale?
Maximum Polite, unless she unknowingly breaks some kind of cultural rule/boundary, or someone else was being Not Nice.
