Songs You Totally Misunderstood, Explained
These songs have more to their meanings than meets the eye—or ear.
Have you ever been singing along to your favorite tune and suddenly realized that the song might be about something completely different than you previously thought? Don't worry, you're not alone. In fact, there are more than a handful of hits that have more to their meaning than what meets the eye. For instance, if you like dancing along to "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People, you'll be floored to find out that it's actually about mental illness. And did you know that the early 2000s novelty hit "Who Let the Dogs Out" is a feminist anthem? To help clear things up—from The Beatles to the Boss—here are the famous songs that have been totally misunderstood.
1 "Who Let the Dogs Out" by Baha Men
As much as we love our four-legged friends, this Caribbean classic is not about canines. After eight years of research, Ben Sisto got to the heart of the titular question in his documentary Who Let the Dogs Out, which premiered at SXSW in 2019. The final answer? The steel drum-infused song is actually a feminist anthem.
According to The Daily Beast, Trinidadian artist Anslem Douglas wrote the song—originally titled "Doggie," but famously known as "Who Let the Dogs Out" thanks to Baha Men's 2000 cover—as a "rallying cry" against cat-calling. Hence the lyrics: "Well the party was nice, the party was pumpin'/And everybody havin' a ball/Until the fellas started name callin'/And the girls responded to the call/I heard a woman shout out/'Who let the dogs out?'" And for other reputable remakes, check out The 50 Best Cover Songs of All Time.
2 "Blackbird" by The Beatles
In terms of symbolism, "Blackbird" is one of The Beatles' best metaphors—and no, it doesn't have any aviary connection. The British band was fascinated and appalled by the American civil rights movement happening in the '60s. They wrote the song "Blackbird" after hearing about the Little Rock Nine, a group of African-American students who fought to desegregate the school system in Little Rock, Arkansas. In 2016, Paul McCartney tweeted, "Incredible to meet two of the Little Rock Nine—pioneers of the civil rights movement and inspiration for Blackbird," following a meet-and-greet with Thelma Mothershed Wair and Elizabeth Eckford.
3 "Semi-Charmed Life" by Third Eye Blind
This '90s hit from San Francisco rockers, Third Eye Blind, isn't what it seems. Despite its upbeat sound, the lyrics have a much darker undertone. In a 1997 interview with Billboard, frontman, Stephan Jenkins, calls "Semi-Charmed Life" a "dirty, filthy song" about, well, sex, drugs, and rock n' roll.
"I think people hear 'Semi-Charmed Life' as a happy summertime jam. And that's fine with me," Jenkins said. "I don't think the song should be so blatant that I have to come out and say, 'Couples who take speed tend to break up, so don't do it.'"
Even the title itself refers to "a life that's all propped up," Jenkins adds. "You know, the beautiful people who lead bright and shiny lives that on the inside are all [messed] up." And for more music about relationships gone wrong, check out, The 100 Best Breakup Songs of All Time.
4 "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler
This breakup ballad is not about your typical "boy meets girl" scenario. In fact, Jim Steinman who wrote the song for Bonnie Tyler, told Playbill that he based the song off a fantasy about vampires. No joke. It was originally called "Vampires in Love," which explains all the creepy lines such as, "Your love is like a shadow on me all of the time/I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark."
5 "Waterfalls" by TLC
Who could ever forget this carpool-karaoke staple? You loved singing the 1994 TLC hit, but you may have overlooked the song's serious subject matter. It's actually about the AIDS epidemic, as referenced in the line: "His health is fading and he doesn't know why/Three letters took him to his final resting place."
"Anything that's self-destructive, that's chasing a waterfall," singer Rozonda 'Chilli' Thomas told The Guardian. "We wanted to make a song with a strong message—about unprotected sex, being promiscuous, and hanging out in the wrong crowd." The music video furthered this message by showing a kid dealing drugs and a man contracting HIV.
6 "Slide" by Goo Goo Dolls
Don't be fooled by this popular 1998 song by the Goo Goo Dolls. "Slide" is not a love ballad, but rather, a story about an unplanned pregnancy. In a 2018 interview celebrating the 20th anniversary of the album Dizzy Up the Girl, lead singer Johnny Rzeznik told Billboard, "I was thinking a lot about the neighborhood I grew up in. 'Slide' is about a teenage boy and girl. They're trying to figure out if they're going to keep the baby or if she's going to get an abortion or if they're just going to run away. They're dealing with these heavy life choices at a very early age. Everybody grew up way too fast."
Don't believe it? Just take a glance at these lyrics: "Don't you love the life you killed?/The priest is on the phone/Your father hit the wall/Your ma disowned you."
7 "Macarena" by Los Del Río
The choreographed moves are almost as iconic as the tune itself. But this '90s Spanish cult-classic isn't as innocent as our childhood memories would expect. The rhythmic hit is actually about a woman who cheats on her boyfriend (with his two friends!) while he's being drafted into the army.
8 "Harder to Breathe" by Maroon 5
Maroon 5's breakout album, Songs About Jane, may be full of steamy love songs, but "Harder to Breathe" is not one of them. In fact, it is actually about a different suffocating relationship—with the group's record label.
"That song comes sheerly from wanting to throw something," frontman Adam Levine said in a 2002 MTV interview. "It was the 11th hour, and the label wanted more songs. It was the last crack. I wanted to make a record, and the label was applying a lot of pressure, but I'm glad they did."
9 "One Way or Another" by Blondie
Blondie frontwoman, Debbie Harry, pulled from personal experience to create the '80s rock classic, "One Way or Another." But, what sounds like a cat-and-mouse game between lovers is a scarier situation in reality. "I was actually stalked by a nut-job so it came out of a not-so-friendly personal event," Harry told Entertainment Weekly. "But I tried to inject a little bit of levity into it to make it more lighthearted. I think in a way that's a normal kind of survival mechanism. You know, just shake it off, say one way or another, and get on with your life. Everyone can relate to that and I think that's the beauty of it." And for other earworms from the '80s, check out 25 Songs Every '80s Kid Knows By Heart.
10 "Pumped Up Kicks" by Foster the People
This head-bouncing bop sounds like it has simple origins about a teenager with sweet new shoes. In reality, it's trying to raise awareness for mental illness and gun violence, as seen in the chorus: "All the other kids with the pumped up kicks/You'd better run, better run, outrun my gun."
"I remember that week, there was some shooting that happened, and it really bothered me, because I recognized that it was going to continue to get worse," lead singer Mark Foster told Billboard in 2019, setting the scene of the song's creation. "And then that song popped out."
11 "Gangnam Style" by Psy
As one of the earliest viral sensations—reaching 3.5 billion views on YouTube—Psy's "Gangnam Style" swept the globe with its infectious beat and dance moves. But behind the South Korean artist's lyrics, lies a sharp social satire on the ultra-rich residents of Gangnam, a neighborhood known as the Beverly Hills of Seoul. In the music video, he pokes fun at the glamorous lifestyle, but even doing that didn't bring him much satisfaction. According to The Atlantic, Psy said: "Human society is so hollow, and even while filming, I felt pathetic. Each frame by frame was hollow."
12 "Born in the U.S.A." by Bruce Springsteen
At first glance, the title track of Bruce Springsteen's seventh album seems as patriotic as patriotic can get. According to The New Yorker, the 1984 hit was even used in Ronald Reagan's presidential campaign. This quickly prompted the Boss to clarify things a bit, saying that "Born in the U.S.A." was "the most misunderstood song since 'Louie, Louie.'" From then on, he played an acoustic version of the hit that made its darker tone—about Vietnam veterans—more obvious to listeners.
In a 1984 Rolling Stone interview, Springsteen said: "When you think about all the young men and women that died in Vietnam, and how many died since they've been back—surviving the war and coming back and not surviving—you have to think that, at the time, the country took advantage of their selflessness."
13 "S&M" by Rihanna
If you thought Rihanna's 2010 bop, "S&M," was about a racy relationship, guess again. The songstress intended it to be about her tumultuous experience with the media. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Rihanna told Vogue in 2011, "The song can be taken very literally, but it's actually a very metaphorical song. It's about the love-hate relationship with the media and how sometimes the pain is pleasurable. We feed off it—or I do. And it was a very personal message that I was trying to get across."
14 "London Calling" by The Clash
Although "London Calling" was known as a political punk-rock anthem in the late '70s, the song was much more relevant to a topic of today's time: climate change. According to The Wall Street Journal, the British band was scared after reading a 1979 London Evening Standard article about the Thames river flooding the streets of London. Originally, frontman, Joe Strummer, focused his lyrics on the subject of drowning but then broadened his approach to include an array of dire circumstances. You can hear it for yourself in the chorus, "The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in/Meltdown expected, the wheat is growing thin/Engines stop running, but I have no fear/'Cause London is drowning/I live by the river."
15 "Royals" by Lorde
Although the lyrics to Lorde's 2013 hit "Royals" depict the idea of rejecting fame and fortune, the true meaning is literally in the song's title. The New Zealand pop artist was flipping through a 1976 issue of National Geographic, and stumbled upon a picture of George Brett, a Kansas City Royals baseball player, who was surrounded by screaming fans begging for his autograph. In an interview with VH1, Lorde explained, "his shirt said Royals… I really like that word, because I'm a big word fetishist. I'll pick a word, and I'll pin an idea to that."
16 "The A Team" by Ed Sheeran
Soothing acoustics aside, "The A Team" is a melancholy story inspired by Ed Sheeran's experience performing at a charity concert for Crisis, a foundation that helps the homeless in the U.K. After visiting the shelter and hearing their stories, Sheeran went home and wrote the lyrics in 20 minutes. You can pick up some of the references, especially in lines like, "Ripped glove, raincoat/Tried to swim and stay afloat/Dry house, wet clothes/Loose change, bank notes/Weary-eyed and dry throat."
17 "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga
Since she first stepped onto the scene in 2008, Lady Gaga has been an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and representation. And on her debut record, The Fame, she explores her own bisexuality in the song "Poker Face." According to NBC, the pop star said the song was "about being in a relationship with a man but fantasizing about a woman; hence, the man must read her poker face."
18 "American Pie" by Don McLean
Don McLean's catchy 1970s ditty may be the perfect campfire sing-along, but it's not as happy-go-lucky as it seems. In fact, the line "the day the music died" nods to the tragic 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, J.P. Richardson (a.k.a. The Big Bopper), and Ritchie Valens.
"The lyrics had to do with the [deteriorating] state of society at the time," McLean told The Guardian. When he auctioned the song's original manuscript at Christie's in 2015, McLean said, "Basically, in 'American Pie' things are heading in the wrong direction. It is becoming less ideal, less idyllic… it is a morality song in a sense."
19 "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan
This Sarah McLachlan song may conjure those sad SPCA animal commercials, but there's more to the tear-inducing tune. According to ABC News, McLachlan penned the piece in memory of Smashing Pumpkins keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin, who died from a heroin overdose in 1996. "The story shook me because though I have never done hard drugs like that, I felt a flood of empathy for him and that feeling of being lost, lonely, and desperately searching for some kind of release," McLachlan wrote on Quora in 2014.
20 "Closing Time" by Semisonic
You've most likely heard this crooner at the end of a late night out with friends. But contrary to popular belief, "Closing Time" isn't about the last call at a bar. Semisonic lead singer, Dan Wilson, actually wrote the piece for his daughter, who was born prematurely. At his college reunion at Harvard in 2008, Wilson told the crowd, "I hid it so well in plain view that millions and millions of people heard the song and didn't get it. They think it's about being bounced from a bar, but it's about being bounced from the womb."

Movie Reviews: The Greatest Hits / Civil War
This week I got to review two very different films:
The Greatest Hits
This week sees the Hulu release of the recent SXSW hit The Greatest Hits, a romantic drama fantasy. What got my attention was star Lucy Boynton, who has very quietly become a standout in multiple films notably the dream girl in Sing Street, which I named my #1 Movie of 2016. She is widely known for playing Freddie Mercury's fiance in Bohemian Rhapsody, an uneven music biopic, but no denying the lead performances. Here, she is the lead carrying the movie. No second billing 'cause she's a star now!
Tumblr media

Boynton plays Harriet, a woman who is still mourning the passing of her boyfriend Max. She is finding that certain songs can transport her back to a particular place and time - literally. Upon hearing a song on the radio or in a coffee shop, she goes back to a point and time in the relationship. This causes her to go through her entire record collection and note which albums do and don't have that effect. Then while at her support group, she meets David, who is dealing with loss of his own. They hit it off, but she's having trouble letting go of the past and pondering if she should change the past too.
Music geekdom in pop culture is usually male-driven, which is why the TV version of High Fidelity, where Zoe Kravitz took over the John Cusack role in the film, was so exciting. The idea of a female-driven music geek movie about a protagonist who browses record stores and organizes her record collection is something pop culture should catch up with. Why does it have to be male-driven movies about music geeks? I say this as a male music geek who frequents record stores and organizes my music collection! But in terms of this movie, I think I liked the idea of it better than the actuality. The movie itself had an interesting concept about the way that a song can take you back to another place and time, but then it just fell into romantic tear-jerker tropes. But the thing is I really wanted to like this, especially since Boynton deserves a star-vehicle of her own.

Civil War
British author / writer / director Alex Garland has had a mixed bag as a writer/director. His 1996 book The Beach was adapted by Danny Boyle in 2000, which had its moments but more or less became a star vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio. That lead to Garland's screenwriting with Boyle directing 28 Days Later and Sunshine. For the former, I dug the first two-thirds and then it fell apart in the last third. However I will say that there's an alternate ending on the DVD that they didn't film, but show the storyboards with voiceover and that would've been a much stronger ending and movie as a whole. The later I don't remember too well, but remember liking it when I saw it. Over the last decade, Garland has brought his dystopian bleak view of the world to the director's seat with mixed results. His best work IMHO was 2014's Ex Machina, which came out just as Siri and Alexa were becoming commonplace and had something to say about AI. If Stanley Kubrick was alive in the 2010s, that's exactly the kind of movie he would've made (NOTE: I said "kind of" not "exactly like"). Now Garland's back with another bleak future, this one about the Divided States of America in Civil War, which opens this week from A24.
Tumblr media
movie poster
In a war-torn U.S., there's a civil war raging with some states resisting the current president (a wasted Nick Offerman, who is barely in it). In NYC, veteran war photographer Lee (Kirsten Dunst) is covering a protest and saves Jesse (Cailee Spaeny), a young photographer just starting out who is actually a fan of Lee's. The next day Lee and her journalist partner Joel (Wagner Moura) are getting ready to drive from NYC to D.C. in the midst of this chaos in hopes of scoring an interview with the president before the rebels get to the White House first. Along for the ride is Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), an older New York Times reporter, and to Lee's dismay, Jesse. Along the way, they see a lot in this dystopian horror-show. Lee and her team get up close for their coverage. As Lee says in the movie (not a spoiler) their job is not to ask questions, just to photograph and let others ask questions.
I had a lot of issues with this movie. First of all, it only scratched the surface. This movie brings up some hot button issues and it's being released in an election year and yet it doesn't really dive too deep only scratches the surface. The film gives no context as to how any of this happened. I don't need everything answered for me in a movie and I'm all for ambiguity when it works, but this just seemed like a missed opportunity. There could've been something to say about the left and the right and where that leaves the middle ground or something to say about Trump waging war on the press, but instead it said, well, not too much. Kirsten Dunst, who is always reliable, was easily the highlight of the film. She is among the greatest child actors who continued to deliver great performances as an adult. Between all of her collaborations with Sofia Coppola (The Virgin Suicides, Marie Antoinette, and The Beguiled), the excellent Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Melancholia (an uneven movie but truly elevated by Dunst), TV's Fargo, and her Oscar-nominated performance in The Power of the Dog, she has quite an impressive filmography. And did I mention she was excellent as MJ in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy! Here, she pulls off an internalized role of a hardened veteran. It's all in her eyes with this performance. But the biggest issue I have with Civil War is that is trying to be deep, profound and meaningful...and by the end it felt like - that's it?!?! Axl Rose singing "what's so civil about war anyways?" was more deep than this!

media release: DEAN Set to Return to Malaysia in Long-Awaited [DEAN with Tabber Live in Malaysia] is proudly organized by JioBuddy
Tumblr media
Highly-acclaimed and renowned South Korean alternative R&B singer-songwriter, rapper, and record producer, DEAN, is set to embark on a long-awaited tour in 2024, and Malaysia is also proud to be included among this much-anticipated event on 10 March 2024!
Known for his soulful yet innovative music, as well as his sultry, velvety voice, DEAN has earned worldwide acclaims since his debut EP "130 Mood: TRBL" in 2016. He has also received various accolades, including awards as "Best Composer of the Year" in Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) 2018, as well as Billboard and local South Korean music charts. DEAN has also constantly collaborated and featured in many artists' songs, such as Girls' Generation Taeyeon's "Starlight", Heize's "Shut Up & Groove" and "And July", Loco’s “Too Much”, DPR Live’s “Know Me”, and also IU's "Troll". In 2017, his single "Instagram" not only topped all local music charts in South Korea, but also resulted in a viral sensation through numerous online covers.
Besides several high-profiled collaborations, DEAN’s compositions have also garnered worldwide attention even before his official debut! Notable songs that DEAN has written include EXO’s “Black Pearl” and “Unfair”, VIXX’s “Voodoo Doll”and “Eternity”, Lee Hi’s “World Tour” and “Video”, as well as a slew of hits from “Show Me The Money” rap competition series.
Not only that, DEAN is a part of the R&B and hip-hop crew Fanxy Child, which boasts of renowned and talented musicians including Zico, Crush, Penomeco, Stay Tuned and Millic. The crew released “Bermuda Triangle” on 2016, peaking at No.2 on GAON Digital Chart (now known as Circle Digital Chart), and even charted No. 3 on Billboard’s World Digital Song chart. The crew then held a two-day concert [FANXY CHILD 'Y' CONCERT] in 2019, with both shows sold out within one minute!
Having started his career as songwriter and producer, DEAN’s US debut in 2015 not only allowed him to feature in critically-acclaimed American artists such as Eric Bellinger, Anderson Paak, Mila J, Daniel Caesar and Jeff Bernat, but also receive numerous invitations to overseas music festivals and events, including SXSW, KCON, Clockenflap, etc.
After a near 5-year hiatus, DEAN made his comeback single "DIE 4 YOU" on November 18, 2023, charting No.1 on many music platforms including New Zealand Hot Singles, Korea and Singapore Spotify, even charting No.51 on Malaysia's Spotify. The song garnered more than 2.4 million views on YouTube, and also 11.3 million streams on Spotify itself.
With such a highly-anticipated comeback, DEAN is announcing a brand new tour in 2024, and he will be returning to Malaysia with [DEAN with Tabber Live in Malaysia] and is organized by JioBuddy.
This marks a four-year wait for DEAN's return to Malaysia, as he last graced the stage at Good Vibes Festival in 2019. Joining DEAN on this tour is rapper and singer-songwriter, Tabber. After signing with DEAN's label you.will.knovv in 2020, Tabber participated in South Korean rap competition TV show "Show Me The Money 10" in 2021, and went on to release several projects, including “007 feat. Syd”, “want YOU”, and his first EP album “Madness Always Turns to Sadness. His recent concert "Tabber.Live [Madness Always Turns to Sadness]", held on 20 November 2023 in Seoul, was sold out within 30 seconds! Will Carter Band Just Wait And See - 4k.mov from Steve Baker on Vimeo.
Katy, Texas born and bred, Will Carter and his band launch their electric live show to national stages as they continue to herd accolades across the Lone Star State for Will’s songwriting and for the band’s live performance. This country artist has landed over a dozen singles on the Texas music charts with three crossing over to Nashville’s Music Row Chart. Carter’s appetite for storytelling and engaging sets have earned a 2022 “Band Of The Year” nomination and four nominations for “Male Artist of the Year,” including one for 2023, at the annual Texas Country Music Awards.
Carter accredits his hard-won success to his tight-knit family. Between homeschooling, breaking horses, milking goats and tending crops, young Will had to carve out time between his chores to hone in on his songwriting and guitar skills. From his family scrapbooks, Will took his first stage at age three and picked up the guitar at age 10.
When Carter was a teenager, his father became severely ill. Like so many of us, he created a playlist of his father’s favorite songs to share with his dad in hopes of providing some comfort and an escape for his dad. Seeing the initial impact from the music, Will recorded these songs and sold CDs to help raise money for his family. This creative and active way of assisting his family landed him on the Debra Duncan television show when he was just 13. Those songs were played for his father every day until he passed. The peace, comfort, and inspiration of that period would serve as the catalyst for Carter’s songwriting and performance career.
Carter bravely pursued his passions kickstarting his professional career in 2016 after a stint with Texas dance hall headliners The Emotions. His debut album, Good Bad Idea, in 2019, laid the foundation for his sound paving a lane on the sonic highway blazed by headliners Mark Chesnutt, Jack Ingram & Easton Corbin. Since then, Carter has been actively touring with his band, performing 150-200 shows each year. Will’s confident, high-energy performances are a country music tour de force appealing to music fans of all ages and putting industry eyes on this remarkable emerging talent.
The Will Carter Band has opened for Cody Johnson, Randy Rogers, Bart Crow, Jack Ingram, Larry Gatlin, Saints Eleven, Josh Ward, Cody Canada, and played SXSW. Carter and his music have been featured on podcasts such as The Troubadour, The Sports Guys, and Scenes Live. Their releases can also be heard on radio stations nationally with particularly heavy airplay in Texas and surrounding states.
There are few artists today who can match Carter’s blend of native talent, determination, and drive. Audiences find his lyrics compelling and his live shows invigorating.

Experimentik #68 / Oct.18.2023 / Julie Rousse / Pierce Warnecke
Tumblr media
October 18. 2023 / 20:30- (doors 20:00)
Solo x 2
Julie Rousse - laptop, sound card, controllers, tape recorders, loop pedal
Pierce Warnecke - electronics
FB event: https://fb.me/e/1x5kBhd2J
----------------------
Julie Rousse Her work is diverse and expressed through several different experimental music projects based on improvisation : live performances, sound installations, electroacoustic compositions, music scores for dance, performance, films, visual artists and photo documentaries.
Passionate phonographer and noise lover, she is always looking for new sonic sources in her worldwide travels, exploring the possibilities of sound capturing in specifically chosen contexts, working with different recording devices. She oscillates between the purity of the recordings and a special attraction for archaic, lo-fi machines. She uses that sonic collection - in an experimental process - as her raw material, an infinite source of rhythms and colors which she shapes with a real time sound treatment software - real time being the essential element of her spontaneous and chaotic approach. She digs in the sound - intruding in the detail - exploring in search of new textures of raw sounds.
In 2015, she was Laureate of the Institut Français programme Hors les Murs, for a3 months stay for a research around the musical culture of the Mapuche people autochtones from the south of Chile.
With Félicie d’Estienne d’Orves, they created the monumental audiovisual installation EXO - Spatio-Temporal Archeology, inviting the audience to turn towards the sky and contemplate while listening to the multiphonics spatialized compositions the Julie created for each objects pointed by Felicie's lasers.
Since 2018 she is living in Marseille. In 2020 she integrates the Collective Les Ateliers Jeanne Barret where she will have her studio as associated artist.
Since 2001, she has been playing in various festivals, events and venues around the world Festival Les Musiques (Marseille ; 2018) ; Nuit Blanche (Paris ; 2005, 2011, 2015, 2018) ; Centre Pompidou (Paris ; 2017) ; Musée de l’Homme (Paris ; 2017) ; Festival REEVOX (Marseille ; 2016) ; Festival PiedNu (Le Havre ; 2015) ; Festival de Arte Sonoro Tsonami (Valparaiso, Chili ; 2013, 2015) ; Le Fest (Tunis, Tunisie ; 2011) ; Send and Receive (Winnipeg, Canada ; 2011) ; Suoni per il Popolo (Montréal, Canada ; 2002,2004) in solo or in collaboration with emerging as well as renowned improvisers from the experimental noise music scene.
Her pieces have been edited on the labels Sub Rosa, TsukuBoshi, Zeromoon, NoType et diffusées sur les ondes d'Arte radio, France Culture et Radio Libertaire.

Bon Iver's Justin Vernon releases 'Holocene' precursor 'Hazelton' Bon Iver bandleader Justin Vernon has shared ‘Hazelton’, a solo song he recorded between 2005 and 2006 that later served as a starting point for ‘Holocene’, a track from Bon Iver’s self-titled 2011 album. ‘Hazelton’ and another song from that era, ‘Liner’, were originally released by Vernon on a small run of handmade CD-Rs in the mid-2000s, while he was still in his previous band, DeYarmond Edison. The two tracks were released on streaming platforms earlier this week. Both will appear on a comprehensive DeYarmond Edison box set titled ‘Epoch’ which is set to arrive later this year. Listen below: [embed]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZvqPkpMB3M[/embed] Vernon’s solo recordings arrived shortly before DeYarmond Edison broke up in 2006. Vernon soon recorded what would go on to become Bon Iver’s debut album, releasing ‘For Emma, Forever Ago’ in July 2007. Vernon’s former bandmates Brad Cook, Phil Cook and Joe Westerlund went on to form the band Megafaun following DeYarmond Edison’s dissolution. ‘Epoch’ is set to arrive physically on August 18, and September 22 digitally. The box set will feature five LPs and four CDs, including DeYarmond Edison’s two albums (2004’s ‘DeYarmond Edison’ and 2005’s ‘Silent Signs’), live recordings and rare material by Vernon and Megafaun. It will also include a 120-page book exploring DeYarmond Edison’s history and the origins of Bon Iver and Megafaun, written by music journalist and friend of the band Grayson Haver Currin. Pre-orders are available here. In addition to ‘Hazelton’ and ‘Liner’, other songs from the compilation that have been released so far include DeYarmond Edison’s ‘As Long as I Can Go’ and Phil Cook and Justin Vernon’s ‘Feel the Light’. Since their disbandment, DeYarmond Edison have sporadically reunited. They played a one-off show as part of SXSW in 2011. In 2016, they united with Bruce Hornsby to contribute a cover of The Grateful Dead‘s ‘Black Muddy River’ to the benefit compilation ‘Day of the Dead’. Bon Iver released their latest album ‘I, I’ in 2019. In a five-star review, NME said the band’s fourth album saw Vernon draw on the sounds of the band’s three previous records. “Over 12 years the music Justin Vernon has created as Bon Iver has constantly changed, but that doesn’t mean the old sounds have been undone,” it read. “They’ve been repurposed and reused, evolving into something different – but always as compelling as the Bon Iver of yesteryear.” !function(f,b,e,v,n,t,s) if(f.fbq)return;n=f.fbq=function()n.callMethod? n.callMethod.apply(n,arguments):n.queue.push(arguments); if(!f._fbq)f._fbq=n;n.push=n;n.loaded=!0;n.version='2.0'; n.queue=[];t=b.createElement(e);t.async=!0; t.src=v;s=b.getElementsByTagName(e)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(t,s)(window, document,'script', 'https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/fbevents.js'); fbq('consent', 'revoke'); fbq('init', '2300206660218433'); fbq('track', 'PageView'); fbq('init', '370979561341328'); fbq('track', 'PageView'); [ad_2] Read More

Why Is the CIA at SXSW? Austin’s South by Southwest festival is a meeting of the minds for disruptors in film, education, technology, culture, music and... the U.S. military. The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) will be hosting a panel at this year’s SXSW, and it turns out it's not their first festival. The government organization known for its covert tactics posted a canva-esque graphic to Twitter to announce their “Spies Supercharged: Tech and Future of CIA” panel at SXSW2023 and people were quick to respond. “welcome to sxsw! don't miss the cia, they certainly won't miss you ;)” — Jill_Krajewski on IG (@Jill_Krajewski on IG) 1677168051 “CIA showing up to SXSW” — Ahmed/The Ears/IG: BigBizTheGod 🇸🇴 (@Ahmed/The Ears/IG: BigBizTheGod 🇸🇴) 1677102476 The panel promises to unpack our landscape of “ubiquitous surveillance, artificial intelligence, sophisticated disinformation campaigns and data streams that double in size every two years” with the agency’s top executives in technology and digital innovation. Related | Demi Lovato's Stans Should Work for the CIASXSW is known to most as a beloved arts & culture festival featuring everything from music acts from around the world to TV show premieres, film sneak peeks and panels led by people in almost every industry you can think of. But the oft unsung side of the festival consists of trade conferences, tech panels and military recruiting. As reported on last year’s CIA SXSW panel by WTOP, SXSW is the perfect breeding ground for the next generation of super spies.“The SXSW Festival attracts tech-savvy, forward-leaning and diverse innovators — the exact talent we need to assess and tackle complex global challenges, and provide policymakers the answers they need to make informed policy decisions,” Terry Randall, Deputy Chief of the CIA’s Talent Acquisition Office told WTOP in 2022. “The convergence of cutting-edge technologies, data analytics and other STEM-related fields makes South-By an ideal recruiting environment... we look for candidates with intellectual curiosity, interest in international affairs, foreign languages and experience overseas; people who desire meaningful work, have an interest in solving interesting problems and want to serve their nation.”Their not-so-clandestine plan is not to convert your average festival attendee into a double-agent — so be sure to remind yourself of that before ingesting any paranoia-inducing substances — but instead to increase diverse recruits among the CIA’s ranks. And they’ve been at it for a while now. Back in 2016, they hosted America’s LGBT Spies: Secret Agents (of Change), a presentation by “America’s Top Spy James Clapper” and “self-declared LGBT ally,” with the description reading: “#sxsw #LGBTspy.”It all factors into the intelligence agency’s DE&I plan. Yes, the CIA has co-opted DEI. Dating back to President Obama’s 2011 Executive Order 13583, personnel efforts in the federal government have sought to “promote the Federal workplace as a model of equal opportunity, diversity, and inclusion” and recruit a workforce more representative of the U.S. population and, in the case of the CIA, the populations of countries in which they operate overseas, or as their SXSW tweet puts it, “flying south.” “The CIA loves flying south to SXSW! In an open letter to SXSW and its parent company PENSKE Media, owner of outlets like Rolling Stone, Billboard, Hollywood Reporter and Variety, 120+ musicians called for compensation increases, an end to application fees and compensation + wristband deals for international and domestic performing acts. “The cost of touring, and the overall cost of living, have soared over the past decade, but SXSW has continued to offer the same disrespectful deal to artists,” musician and UMAW founder Joey La Neve DeFrancesco shared in a statement. “The festival has continued to grow, and openly brags about the hundreds of millions of dollars it generates for Austin. Yet the artists who are the backbone of the festival continue to be mistreated.”As festivals become content-farms and brands, and both businesses and the U.S. government sideline culture, the question remains of how far we can push the boundaries of art and technology and where artists can turn for authenticity while performing alongside panels like “Does ‘Mind Control For Good’ Exist?” That one’s not even government-funded. “Can this Google executive use Mind Control for good? I'm excited to find out!” — La Neve (@La Neve) 1677086463 Photo courtesy of Shutterstock https://www.papermag.com/cia-sxsw-2659466143.html

#Discussion – Creating the Modern Media Company_ SXSW Interactive 2016
Started in 1987, South by Southwest (SXSW) is a set of film, interactive, and music festivals and conferences that take place early each year in mid-March in Austin, Texas. SXSW’s original goal was to create an event that would act as a tool for creative people and the companies they work with to develop their careers, to bring together people from a wide area to meet and share ideas. That continues to be the goal today whether it is music, film or interactive technologies.
