Akiko Tamura and Akira Ishihama in Boyhood (Keisuke Kinoshita, 1951) Cast: Akira Ishihama, Akiko Tamura, Chishu Ryu, Renaro Mikuni, Toshiko Kobayashi, Mutsuko Sakura, Takeshi Sakamoto, Ryuji Kita. Screenplay: Keisuke Kinoshita, Sumie Tanaka, based on a novel by Isoko Hatano. Cinematography: Hiroshi Kusuda. Art direction: Tatsuo Hamada. Music: Chuji Kinoshita. It's easy to see why Keisuke Kinoshita was one of Japan's most popular directors: He had that audience-pleasing ability to create identifiable characters and familiar situations, along with a sincere desire to make a statement about ordinary people caught up in the sweep of history. Like his Twenty-Four Eyes (1954), Boyhood is about people in wartime but not where the conflict rages most fiercely -- the conflicts in Boyhood are interpersonal and internal, not international. Ichiro (Akira Ishihama) is a 15-year-old boy, too young to fight in the war. When his family -- mother, father, two younger brothers -- relocates to the country during the war, Ichiro chooses to stay behind in Tokyo so he can continue his studies. But the first air raid finds him on a train to see his family, and when he returns to school he finds that he has fallen behind the other students and is stigmatized for his flight. So he joins his family in the country and starts at a new school, where he is an outcast, in part because the rural people treat the refugees from the city with scorn. He also feels at odds with his father (Chishu Ryu), an intellectual who tacitly disapproves of the war, and is disturbed by the fact that his mother (Akiko Tamura) does most of the work to keep the family fed and housed, while his father continues with his studies. Ichiro is regarded as a weakling by his fellow students, and the teachers, most of whom preach the militaristic virtues of strength and self-sacrifice, do little to help. When the lake freezes over in winter, for example, Ichiro finds that he is incapable of learning to skate, and though he makes a determined effort, he's mocked for his failure. Not as wrenchingly sentimental as Twenty-Four Eyes, Boyhood still elicits strong feeling because Kinoshita sticks with Ichiro's point of view -- his desire to fit in, his closeness to his mother, and his confusion about his father's distance from the reality of what is happening around them. At the conclusion of the film there's a measure of triumph in the defeat of militarism at the war's end, but there's also a feeling of a lack of resolution to Ichiro's story.

INTERVIEW: MAJOR SECOND's Natsumi Fujiwara and Kana Hanazawa Talk About Their Baseball Fandom!
Tumblr media
With the Major League playoffs now in full swing, there’s no better time for sports anime fans to be getting into MAJOR 2nd. Picking up after the events of the award-winning, decade-spanning MAJOR series, middle school student Daigo Shigeno seeks to follow in the footsteps of his father and someday earn a spot in the Major Leagues along with his rival Sato Hikaru, close friend Mutsuko Sakura, and the myriad of teammates he’ll get to know along the way!
With its second season currently underway, we got a chance to talk to Natsumi Fujiwara, who plays the role of Daigo Shigeno, and Kana Hanazawa, who plays the role of Mutsuko Sakura. Read on below to find out what they had to say about voice acting, baseball, and what you should be looking forward to from MAJOR 2nd this season!
Tumblr media
How did you both get your starts in voice acting?
Natsumi Fujiwara: I have liked games and anime since I was little. When I realized that the energetic and cute character from one show, and the pretty, mature, and cool character from another show were all played by a single actor, I thought, “That’s so cool! I want to do that!” And I decided to become a voice actor.
Kana Hanazawa: I discovered anime voice acting during my second year of middle school, when I was a child actor.
How do each of you prepare for a voice acting role?
Fujiwara: I try to experience the same things my character is experiencing. For MAJOR 2nd, I went to batting centers, played catch, and did everything I possibly could in the real world to get feel for distance and pitching, just so I could get a bit closer to the character.
Hanazawa: I gather from the script as many aspects I need to play the role. If there’s a manga or anime I read or watch it first before I begin. However, if it’s a role where it’s better not to know what will happen, I will deliberately not read it. If I need to act out something I never experienced mentally and physically, I look for a similar experience within my own life.
    Natsumi Fujiwara
In MAJOR 2nd, you voice Daigo Shigeno, son of Goro Shigeno from the longrunning MAJOR series chronicling his journey all the way from little league baseball to the American majors. What similarities or differences do you see between Daigo and his father?
Fujiwara: Daigo is different from his father in that he has a delicate side, but he’s just as passionate for baseball and tenacious as his father. He is dense around girls, so he does take after his father a bit there! [Laughs]
I understand that performing the role of a young boy takes much more than simply altering your voice. Could you tell us more about that?
Fujiwara: When I take on young boy roles, first I try to be relaxed. Then, depending on what kind of boy I’m playing, be they energetic, shy, or mature, I imagine how they would speak, and add these various aspects to my performance.
  Kana Hanazawa
Do you feel that your work changed since you’ve gotten married?
Hanazawa: I don’t feel anything changed right now. As my personal feelings and lifestyle changes from having a larger family that’s dear to me, my own acting may change.
You’ve had an incredible career as a voice actress. Is there a role you would like to try someday?
Hanazawa: If you let me I’ll try any kind of role! If I must pick, I want to try roles I don’t get a lot of, like boys or female villains!
Tumblr media
How does Daigo’s and Mutsuko’s relationship with one another affect their growth as baseball players?
Hanazawa: The two are very attentive to those around them (even though Daigo is clueless about love…) so they’re able to emphasize and help with each other’s and the team's problems. Daigo sees Mutsuko’s mental strength and selects her for pitcher, and later gives hints when she’s talking about her worries. Mutsuko keenly senses the changes Daigo is going through, and is always thinking about how to help him.
What aspects of MAJOR 2nd highlight it within the baseball anime genre?
Fujiwara: Since a lot of girls join all at once in season 2, “Girl’s Baseball” becomes a major keyword as the story progresses. I hope fans will be excited to see how everyone at Furin Middle School plays baseball, and how Daigo’s friends from season 1 will get involved in season 2.
Hanzawa: I think it’s an excellent story of Daigo’s growth as a human, and how it follows his path in baseball. Since little league, Daigo faced highly skilled and athletic star players, which forced him to deal with his own complexes. During middle school baseball there are a lot of fascinating teamplay scenes that show how he supports his team as a catcher. It’s impressive how he fights in his own unique way.
Are either of you big baseball fans? Did you ever play?
Fujiwara: Since I had my first ever pitching ceremony at Seibu Stadium, I’m cheering for the Seibu Lions! I played a little baseball as a student during PE classes. I remember how disappointed I was when I came short of catching a fly ball one of the baseball team members hit. When I joined MAJOR 2nd, I wanted to join a softball team! I really love playing catch and still do so now!
Hanazawa: Since I was little, I’ve been watching games with my dad who’s a Giants fan, and I’ve played catch at the park. I’m a fan of Yoshinobu Takahashi, and I used to have his baseball card tucked away in my student ID book.
Tumblr media
Are there any moments from the latest season of Major 2nd that you’re most excited for fans to see?
Fujiwara: Wow, there’s so many! [Laughs] There’s the scene where you think the team finally came together, only to be separated due a certain thing happening, but everyone still thinks of the team, and their bond grows stronger. Then there’s the scene that touches on everyone’s love of baseball…
I want the fans to watch them all!! [Laughs]
Hanzawa: The scene where Daigo’s trauma from Season 1 comes back. Also look out for times when Daigo acts differently, and how the other team members act.
Are there any final messages you’d like to leave for overseas readers?
Fujiwara: I’m very happy that overseas fans are enjoying both MAJOR and MAJOR 2nd. Thank you so much! I hope everyone can enjoy both the manga and anime. It spotlights how Daigo engages with baseball in a way that’s different from his father and unique to him, and how each team member personally feels about baseball. Thank you for your continued support!
Hanazawa: Furin Middle School’s baseball team gets frustrated a lot because opponents see all their girl members and ridicule or go easy on them, even though the girls can play baseball just as well. Even then they grow as they fight back using their strengths. Please watch this amazing team do their best!
MAJOR 2nd is available to stream on Crunchyroll and VRV with new episodes premiering Saturdays at 7:00am EDT.

Good to see you, friends!
Heh, I feel like I’m getting better at making these recaps go into more detail without being twelve miles long. I’m also getting better at remembering the sequence of events so I don’t have to go back through the episode as much. That being said I’d better get on with the post before I have to eat my own foot.
We open exactly where we left off, with Daigo getting the news that Hikaru moved away. This, naturally, sends him into a downward spiral. Hikaru was the entire reason he picked up playing again after all. He becomes a grump again fairly quickly and it seems like it’ll be there to stay until Toshiya comes by with a letter from Hikaru.
This letter is exactly what you think it is from the title of the episode. It reveals to Daigo that the news of Hikaru’s move was just as much of a surprise to Hikaru himself as everyone else. He apologizes for not telling Daigo, who he considers his best friend, when they last saw each other, but he couldn’t bear the thought of their last game of catch ending in tears. He thanks Daigo for showing him how much he loved baseball, and he promises that so long as they keep playing one day they’ll team up to form an invincible battery!
This has an appropriately shonen effect on young Daigo who redoubles his training efforts with Toshiya (who, being the intelligent if estranged father he is guessed the effect the letter would have and was still waiting in his car right outside).
We see Daigo catching 130km/h fastballs at the batting center, and Toshiya applauds. Daigo is puffed up with bravado because of how far he’s come, and so is served a slice of humble pie by Coach Toshiya via the suggestion they try 150km/h. Daigo’s reaction is priceless.
Tumblr media
Toshiya quickly explains it was a joke. There’s no need to practice at that level in the Junior leagues. Instead he wants to move on to focusing on other things. On the drive to Daigo’s place, Daigo gets a little somber and says that he’s confident in his catching, but he’s going to be in right field for the upcoming tournament. The old dragon of his weak arm is rearing its ugly head in the back of his mind. He self-deprecates hard in front of Toshiya who gives him the dose of medicine he sorely needed two years before.
Tumblr media
They go practice down by the river. He has Daigo throw 50m pass, and he does it with some effort. He then drops the truth-bomb on Daigo that the kid was too impatient to hear when he first started out: That a kid in Juniors doesn’t need to be able to throw like a freaking pro. Mind=Blown
Having been actually told in a way and by some one he’ll actually LISTEN TO that he just has to work at strengthening his arm, Daigo sets in to chase his dream of playing baseball with his best bud again some day. This leads him to drag Sakura into the next phase of her arc... PRACTICE I mean he drags her into practicing with him... Yeah.
She mentions how she wants to play and he’s all.
“Then you should”
But she’s all “Parents won’t let me” And he’s all “Well then don’t because you obviously don’t want it bad enough”
And she’s all “Wow for you, self awareness is just something that happens to other people isn’t it?”
And he’s all “What’s self awareness?”
“Forget it I’m gone.”
And scene.
Of course having been batoned over the head by shonen spirit from both Hikaru and Daigo, Sakura naturally takes his “If you want it you’ll chase it no matter what” attitude more seriously than she lets on and through her overwhelming drive and soulful descriptions of the sound effect of a ball hitting the glove just right.
Tumblr media
She manages to convince them that she’s serious about this. We end at practice the next day where the coach announces that they have a practice game coming up and introducing Sakura as the new team member. Daigo is surprised... for some reason.
Well, that was pretty great. I’ve gotta wonder why Mutsuko’s parents were so dead set against her playing that they made lame excuses. What is it with parents in this show being so weirdly inconsistent.
SPEAKING of which! Hikaru’s mom. I’ll grant that she had a good reason for moving and it wasn’t what I thought. I judged that hastily, BUT she doesn’t get off the hook. In his incredibly revealing letter to Daigo, Hikaru revealed that his mom deliberately hid the fact they were moving from him until the last possible minute. Literally the night before the move. How she managed to hide this from him when she would have had to PACK UP HOUSE WITHOUT HIM NOTICING is a line of speculation I won’t bother to dwell upon. What I will dwell upon is this idea of “He’ll totally be dead set against it so I won’t bother telling him until last minute so I don’t have to put up with my child being upset that we’re moving again so soon.”
Of course who am I to judge? After all it’s a well known fact that children are alien creatures who cannot comprehend concepts such as “Legitimate reasons” and “Compassion”. Telling him as soon as you’d made the decision to move so that he could have time to say goodbye to his friends and explain the situation to those who might care to know would only have brought misery to you. Only adults actually care about saying a proper goodbye to the people in their social circle. No Hikaru definitely would have just ground in his heels and been a problem. So it was much better to let him live in blissful ignorance and then force him to pack up his entire life overnight, go to school the next day, and then drive out to Gunma uprooting the fledgeling social life he’d eked out for himself.
{Don’t make us cut you off for sarcasm again} ((I’m almost done, back off))
Anyway YES This was an absolutely FLAWLESS plan with NO LOGICAL INCONSISTENCY WHATSOEVER! After all it’s not like she had time to say goodbye to her frie-
Tumblr media
Oh... OOOOOOOOOH.
Yeah, I’m a bit miffed by that. It’s not that it’s badly written. Quite the opposite, it’s a really believable circumstance, because some parents WOULD do this if it was in their power. In my experience the sort of parent who would do this is the sort who wanted to have kids, but didn’t want to deal with little things like: “Their child being upset about something” or “Their child wanting to know why the parent is doing a thing” or “Literally any of the more tedious elements of parenting”
Okay... I need to get off my damn soap box. I’ve never been a parent myself. I’ve only ever been the child in this sort of relationship, but I have seen a lot of parents. I have an understanding, or at least a perceived understanding, of what makes kids “rebel”, and I also know that any responsibility comes with both good and bad elements that we have to undertake if we want to live up to that responsibility.
Know that critique of parents in fiction is going to be a continuing trend in my posts. Particularly because I have an unreasonably high standard in Junko Kaname to compare them to. xP
For now I’m going to knock off for the day.
Until next post keep talking fiction, friends! I’ll see you soon.
