Sennheiser MD 421-II- Best Recording Dynamic Microphone (Full Review)
Tumblr media
The Sennheiser MD 421 II continues the tradition of the MD 421, which has been one of Sennheiser’s most popular dynamic mics for over 35 years. The large diaphragm, a dynamic element handles high sound pressure levels, making it natural for recording guitars and drums.
The MD 421’s full-bodied cardioid pattern and five-position bass control make it an excellent choice for most instruments, as well as group vocals or radio broadcast announcers. One listens and you’ll know why it’s a classic.

Vocaloid of The Day!
MEIKO!
Tumblr media
Release Date: November 5, 2004
Era: V1; V3 update
Company: Yamaha and Crypton Future Media
Language: Japanese/English
☆☆☆
She was released as a counterpart to KAITO, and sold a bit better than him. The DTM Magazine was the main way to advertise vocaloids at the time, and was a majority male audience. MEIKOS mature voice is what gained her popularity with that audience.
There was a competition held in 2006 where users would submit an original song with her voicebank. 80% of contestants received a "signed" copy of MEIKOs voicebank box.
MEIKO and KAITO were the first to have official designs, and the more anime/cartoon look given to them is what helped solidify what designs future vocaloids would have. Her original box art, shown below, was drawn by illustrator Wasshi. Her V3 box art(first image) was drawn by iXima.
Tumblr media
Her name comes from her voice provider, Meiko Haigō. Her codename during development was HANAKO, the Japanese equivalent to Jane Doe.
She has no official age, but is commonly interpreted as a middle age woman. Her fans also interpreted her as a drinker, and was commonly drawn with a bottle of sake in fanart.
Both her and KAITO were not going to get a software update, the company wanting Miku to take over for them. Eventually due to their steady popularity they were both given v3 updates. Her song usage peaked between 2008-2010.
At the time, she was the most popular vocaloid, selling over 3000 units. However, she has gone up and down in popularity ever since, disappearing and reappearing in the top 10 vocaloid products list.
Her v1 box art features a Sennheiser MD421 microphone, and her V3 has a modern Model 55 microphone.
☆☆☆
Personal Opinion:
I remember really hating her when I was younger. I was not a fan of the deeper, more mature voicebanks. I also really liked KAITO at the time, and for some reason that made me think I had to hate MEIKO. I no where near hate her now, but she definitely isn't a favorite. I find her design a little boring and her voice isn't really for me. That being said she is still a really neat character!

Did something way outside of my comfort zone and recorded drums the other day. I've been wanting to play drums on a song for over a decade now and it feels great to finally have the confidence to do it. I'm actually fairly pleased with how it's sounding so far, especially for being a song I had just started writing a few days prior. I have no idea if/when this song will ever be officially released anywhere, but that's not really why I did it to begin with. As far as the nerdy aspects, I was using my usual setup of my 70's Pearl kit (22, 13, 16) with a Ludeig Supraphonic snare. Cymbals were all Zildjian. 14" New Beat hats, 18" medium thin crash, 22" Ping Ride, and a 21" Sweet Ride as a crash. Mics were fairly standard as well. Audix D6 on the kick, MD421 on the rack, CAD M179 on the floor. I stuck with a 57 on the snare top, but tried a Samson C02 on the bottom. Hats were an SM7b, overheads were a spaced pair of 1990s Røde NT-2's, and the room mics were the usual setup of a pair of Cascade Fatheads running into an ART Pro MPA and VLA, although I went a little bit more extreme with the compression on the VLA. Hopefully I'll be posting some clips soon! . . . . . . . . . . . #Recording #Drums #HomeStudio #HomeRecording #Drumming #PearlDrums #Zildjian #Ludwig #LudwigSupraphonic #Supraphonic #LM402 #PingRide #SweetRide #Shure #SM57 #SamsonC02 #SM7B #Sennheiser #MD421 #CAD #M179 #Audix #D6 #Røde #NT2 #CascadeFathead #ARTProMPA #ARTProVLA #Studio #LiveDrums #Music #MusicProduction #Producer #Studio331 (at Studio 33:1 Productions) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bxvtxvpg3UA/?igshid=76cyqlbxvz29

Sweater Weather: Electric Guitar
The microphones used to record the electric guitar parts were a Sennheiser MD421, a Shure SM57 and a AKG C414. I was the one playing guitar, so whilst I was tuning and warming up, Hailey and Nathan were setting up the microphone positions and Isaac was setting up the cables into the desk, making sure we were getting signal. The guitar used was a Mexican Fender Telecaster and the amp was an Orange Crush.
Tumblr media
The MD421 was used so we could pick up the low - mid frequencies of the amp as it’s frequency response is flat from 100Hz - 1kHz and has a boost at 4kHz. The polar pattern is cardioid which makes it ideal for recording an amp as it can only picks up sound from in front of it (i.e the amp) and won’t pick up any unwanted noise from behind it. It was positioned  about 6 inches away from the amp’s cone and was facing it dead-on.
Tumblr media
The SM57’s role was to pick up the mid - high frequencies as it boosts frequencies between 6kHz - 10kHz. This would allow the mix to have a brighter sound to the electric guitar, making the overall sound from the amp represented accurately in the final mix. Because of its cardioid polar pattern, it was positioned off axis at around 25° aimed at the edge of the cone.
Tumblr media
The final mic used was an AKG C414, and its role was to be a room mic, similarly to how we recorded the acoustic guitar. Because it has multiple options for the polar pattern, we chose to have it in omnidirectional so we could pick up any sound that would bounce off walls and therefore picked up to the sides and behind the C414. It was positioned about 5ft off the ground and around 6.5ft away from the amp.

Main Recording Session (Bass/Electric Guitar)
Heading back into the studio, we had a strong idea of what needed to be accomplished. Aside from the drum recordings, completed in the last studio session, we had still yet to record the main aspects of the track and so went about starting with the counterpart of the drums and recorded the bass in through direct input as this allowed us to get the cleanest bass tone and meant we were trialling different recording methods, rather than just use mic set ups for everything. This allows us to have a wide variety of recording styles showcased in the one recording, without compromising the overall sound. Once we had few takes of the bass recorded, we set up a single coned Vox amp with a Sennheiser MD421 placed close to the guitar amp and in line with the centre of the cone, but on a slight angle. This mic was especially useful for the guitar recordings as it has a narrow cardioid pattern and so will avoid picking up any aspects of the room. As well as this it also has a large dynamic range, meaning it can pick up a range of frequencies with relative ease and allows the low and higher tones to show just as well on the recording. Again, once we managed to get the mic set up we went through and got a couple takes of the track to ensure we had something usable.
