This Week In BL - GMMTV Holds the Line
Feb 2023 Wk 1
Being a highly subjective assessment of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.
Tumblr media
When they say “famous last words” this is what they mean.
Ongoing Series - Thai
My School President (Fri YT) ep 10 of 12 - They are so stinkn’ CUTE as bfs. Possibly the cutest. I chuckle a lot with this show. And that’s great, very serotonin inducing. Also 2nd half had good soapy drama tension with the music competition + the mom’s surgery at the SAME TIME (gasp). Can’t wait for next week.
Moonlight Chicken (Weds YT) 1-2 of 8 - Oh it’s great. Messy gays struggling with both internal and external conflict. It has a Taiwanese gritty queer authenticity to it. EarthMix are perfect for these roles. Khaotung is the most adorable thing ever. And GeminiFourth are fun to see as new characters. Fourth is showing off his acting chops, the way he holds his jaw and mouth for this more sullen complicated part - it’s completely different from Gun. His acting style reminds me of Nanon a bit, he’s very nuanced in his facial expressions.
Never Let Me Go (Tues YT) ep 9 of 12 - 15 minutes of cute bf and dumb tattoos and then SUFFER! I love how quickly Palm put to rest your bog standard gay boy fantasies about a bisexual’s options. Palm was basically: “All the things that you dream for me with a woman, I can do that with you.” Honestly? I wasn’t that moved by the noble sacrifice of this episode. It was fine. More peril please. Looking forward to things going very very badly for the next couple of episodes. Bring on the pain GMMTV.
Hit Bite Love (Sat YouTube) ep 3 of 6 - Baby Dom is quite the kink dilettante, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a kinkster with more varied tastes. Maybe baby just hasn’t found his true fetish yet? I feel for poor Shogun who just wants a boyfriend who treats him decently and ends up with Mr. Experimental. The humorous outcome is, of course, predictable. Not wild about the stepbrothers storyline (despite my taboo preferences). Really? I just want more King and Burger.
609 Bedtime Story (Fri WeTV) ep 11fin - With the exception of Mum, every character suddenly started acting totally OUT of character. Anygay, Mum comes back to find Dew single and all obstacles to their romance magically cleared. The pub staff setting them up was cute. But all in all it felt like we were suddenly in a completely different show. Series review below.
I cannot believe we have 3 BL’s airing AT THE SAME TIME from GMMTV. It’s insane. I remember when it was exciting because we had 3 BLs airing at the same time at all.
Tumblr media
Ongoing Series - Not Thai
HIStory 5: Love in the Future (Taiwan Weds Viki) ep 7 of 10 (or 13&14 of 20) - It’s an office romance BL, so I like that office politics is complicating matters for both of our couples. I personally don’t believe in scions (with very few exceptions, we know it tends to be bad for a corporation, and that has certainly been my experience). Still, it’s suitably traumatic to see our couples in angst over the power transition. The confession scene for the leads was very sweet. And a nice kiss. And cute bf. Taiwan always just does these beats better than anyone else.
Candy Color Paradox AKA Ameiro Paradox (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 8 fin - K needed to realize O is a big boy. Yes we get it. Bummer he couldn’t figure out that for himself and had to be told by somebody else. I do feel sorry for the bartender character who keeps having to deal with all of these gay boys and their inability to communicate and resulting overdramatic depression. Meanwhile O needed to realize K needs him. And they both needed to learn to communicate, these… journalists. Good kiss and decent sex scenes for a JBL, with an HEA. Careful Japan we may start to develop expectations. I bumped up my rating on the strength of this finale. It was good! Series review below.
Individual Circumstances (Thurs Viki) 7-8fin - I like the resolution and explanation for the conflict, a lot more than I liked the conflict itself. The kiss wasn’t awesome, but it wasn’t entirely dead fish either. However, Korea has proved that it can do better, so I was annoyed by it. Also, no shirtless scene this time around, we were robbed. Series review below.
The End Of The World, With You AKA Bokura no Micro na Shuumatsu (Japan Sun Gaga ep 2 of 8 - This is way too high heat for them to end it happily. It’s all v weird. I guess I’ll keep watching? Even if everyone dies, this one is not gonna ruin me the way Eternal Yesterday almost did.
Tumblr media
It’s Airing But I’m Not Watching it
My Beautiful Man S2 (Viki & Gaga) - Because there are only 4 episodes, I decided to wait and binge this one. What can I say? I just do not trust Japan. Sorry I’m too scared, those of you braver than I must watch first - I salute you and look forward to the gifs.
Egoist (Japan) cinema - Japanese movies are notoriously difficult to get ahold of.
Marry My Dead Body AKA Ghost and I Becoming Family (Taiwan) - movie about a police officer forced to marry a ghost.
Cafe in Love - Can’t find it
Finished this week
Tumblr media
609 Bedtime Story
An interesting time slip concept and a great set up ultimately disappointed. It opened strong, on one of my favorite under appreciated Thai actors: Plustor (as Vee) in a side bartender romance with younger bisexual king, Games. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there. OhmFluke’s solid chemistry and romantically soft kisses were ill served by a reformed rake meets rich-kid cheater pairing. While it was nice to see Ohm play a part with more animated facial expressions, his was the only character that remained consistent. All in all, this was a confusing show about disloyalty and parallel worlds that never made sense or stayed true to its characters. A promising start, confusing middle, and disappointing end. I don’t say this lightly, but Oh My Sunshine Night is better, and OhmFuke deserve better than either. 6/10
Tumblr media
Individual Circumstances
A second chance romance between a movie director who was once promising and a writer who disappeared due to past hurt. Stars JunQ (main rapper of MYNAME) and Han Jung Wan (Mr International Korea winner). Reunion romances are not my thing but I liked the bratty director despite his stalking (and prob because of his naked chest). Using a guitar to torture someone is entirely appropriate, in my book/BL world it happens all too often. I did want to know what happened in the past but the mystery got drawn out too much and the tsundere character became frustratingly mean spirited as a result. I like the resolution and explanation for the conflict a lot more than I liked the conflict itself. I could tell what this show wanted to be, and what it could’ve been, but it simply never got there. In the end, like a host of other KBLs over the last couple of years, it is serviceable but eminently forgettable. 7/10
Tumblr media
Candy Color Paradox AKA Ameiro Paradox
Innocent but talented gay tabloid journalist partners (and falls in love with) a jaded player bisexual cameraman. This is a solid JBL of the more emo, cringe, and navel gazing variety that never really resonates with me. The main pairs’ chemistry felt weak and their characters were pat (for live action yaoi, I’ve seen or read this couple a million times). Bringing Izuka Kenta in to guest star was a stroke of genius and also challenging, because he has a complex history with JBL which I could not forget as I watched him EAT up the screen so hard he made the leads feel insipid. There were a lot of aspects of this show that felt more KBL than JBL. I missed the kinky edgy pushing boundaries we usually get from Japanese office romances. It did have a stellar ending (featuring a decent kiss and 2 nice sex scenes, you go Japan) but for me CCP was fine, just no more than fine. 8/10
Look you know how I feel about JBL, when it’s good it’s some of my absolute favorite (Seven Days, Old Fashion Cupcake, Minato’s Laundromat, Takara & Amagi), nothing else whips me into wit and eloquence and film crit like it, but when it’s off, for me, it’s really off. And Ameiro never gelled with me. It was too much work to watch. I don’t like chewy BL - nourishing and necessary though it may be for others.
Tumblr media
Gossip
Issues and Controversies of Thai BL Actors - I get asked about these a lot, so I’m just gonna point you all at this YT henceforth.
Viki picked up Boys Planet so I’m watching it. I have FEELS but I’m not going to ruin a perfectly decent BL blog with Kpop reality TV, no matter how pretty. Just know I’m over here suffering for 4 hours every week. SUFFERING. Some of the singing during the first ep alone was SO BAD it put Thai BL boyfriends to shame. I am so glad they got 3 vocal coaches in this show. People better vote with their goddamn ears and not just (as they did with iLand) much lower down. (Oo, I’m salty already.)
In Case You Missed It
Feb releases list is here.
2023 forthcoming BL master post. (see comments some are inaccurate, NOT UPDATED)
Next Week Looks Like This:
Tumblr media
I am so spoiled these days, now I’m upset there isn’t a good KBL airing right now. Do you remember when we barely got one or two a year? What a demanding monster 2022 turned me into. Anygay, 4 more Thai BL starting this week...
Destiny Seeker (Tues WeTV ) 1 of ? - Feb 14 we think, MDL is janky on this one. Engineering student Songkram is head of dorm 3, for "strong & athletic" students. Aye is head of dorm 2, for the "good looking" students. Aye used to be Songkram's tutor and friend, but they fell apart after becoming dorm heads. Aye is actually in love with Songkram but thinks Sonkram likes someone else. Songkram actually likes Aye. So, Bad Buddy the pulp rebirth meets that weird Japanese “girls-crossdressing-as-boys for love and infiltrating secret society of hotness” tradition.
Boyband (Thurs YT) 1 of 10 - Feb 16, it’s on the tin, BL drama about putting an idol boyband together. AKA how to make ABL suffer by combing favorite (celebrity romances, Kpop) and least favorite (bad singing) tropes.
Bed Friend (Sat YT & iQIYI uncut) 1 of 8 - Feb 18, but we’re looking for the rerun/uncut, so not sure on drop date for those. Fuck buddies get messy, AKA Between Us the second cuming, this time in an office (and on a desk). I have been waiting for James to hold down (or be held down in) a BL for years! Watch out, new kings of high heat are heading our way.
Chains of Heart (Sat Gaga) 1 of 10 - Feb 18 Suspense thriller about a forest ranger, smugglers, memory loss, and lost love. Stars Haii (Cirrus in TT2) and Poppy (Porpla in YYY). Adapted from a Y-novel of the same name by TJ Tommy.
Supposedly, but I’ve no idea where to watch it:
Jack Frost (Japan) - Feb 17 After saying goodbye to his friend, Ritsu had an accident and lost his memory. His roommate, Ikuya, struggles to rebuild their relationship and help him regain his memories. In the process, Ritsu falls in love with Ikuya, but he was unaware that they were already in a relationship.
Moments Of Love (Thai) Feb 14 Foremorfilm Production movie for cinema release. Was originally Golf (Director of 609 Bedtime Story & The Eclipse) to direct stars SmartJames (LeonPhob from Don't Say No) in a series. Is now something totally different and a movie. We are all confused.
THIS WEEK’S BEST MOMENTS

Top Shows I Watched in 2023 (not of)
SPOILERS!
7. Loki (Season 2) - 6.5/10
Tumblr media
I don't have much to say about Loki other than I loved the final episode, Natalie Holt deserves some kind of award for her music and it makes me cry.
6. One Piece (Live Action) - 6.5/10
Tumblr media
As everyone has already said, this should not have worked. I didn't have much faith in it, but I chose to watch it anyway. And I'm glad I did.
Though there were moments of stiff acting and/or line delivery, I still like it overall.
Though I still liked Roger's anime death more than here.
5. My Beautiful Man/Utsukushii kare (Season 2) - 7/10
Tumblr media
I don't remember much considering I watched this months ago. But I do recall wanting and waiting for this for a WHILE. I was not disappointed and Utsukushii Kare stands as my favorite BL series. Minato's Laundromat would've been on the list, but it failed me, Utsukushii Kare hasn't. So yeah.
4. Jack O' Frost (2023) - 6/10
Tumblr media
I have issues with the whole "an MC has amnesia" plot and considering this has happened 3 times in the same year is crazy to me.
But do recall I Fucking LOVE the music! OOOOHHHH, Shit! I love it. As soon as "Winter Days" started playing during episode 2 or 3, I immediately started looking for the soundtrack.
I also have yet another celebrity crush in Kyoya Honda.
3. Taira no Kiyomori - 8/10
Tumblr media
This is unfair given the fact I started this last year and left for a month, making me finish this in January or February. But I still finished in 2023, so it counts!
As per my previous review, I was fucking bored with the first 6 to 9 episodes. After them, however, I loved this show. I love the music, I love the characters, and I like some of the comedy. There are so many great moments that I absolutely love.
Despite knowing how it ended, historically, I was still upset at the characters' deaths.
2. More Than Words (2022) - 6/10
Tumblr media
I heard this was a Japanese BL, my favorite type of BL, and I guess. But as others have said, it's mostly about the relationship between Makio and Mieko. Though perhaps not for the second part of the story...
Anyway, I loved this show. It fucked me up, but I did stay up all night till 12 or 1 am to finish it, and I couldn't stop thinking about it for a month. So yeah, despite the score, I am putting it up here.
1. Kamakura dono no 13 nin/13 Lords of the Shogun - 7/10
Tumblr media
HERE COMES THE MAIN MAN HIMSELF, KŌKI MITANI!
Tumblr media
The main man himself, the man who wrote my favorite Taiga Drama, SANADA MARU! No wonder I was fucking addicted to this show. For first time in A WHILE I watched and finished this entire show in a week.
I was drawn into this show by the fucking neck. I just was.
I remember seeing You Oizumi as Minamoto no Yoritomo and thinking, "Nah." I couldn't get behind him, I simply didn't see it at first. Then he died and literally episodes later, I was missing this man.
All my favorite characters died. ALL! And since I don't know much about the Heian nor Kamakura period, I was taken out. Fucking Kazusa, dead; Minamoto no Yoshinaka, I knew this was so it's my fault, but dead; fucking Wada Yoshimori, I fucking loved him, and I didn't know it! DEAD!
They killed my pathetic twink, Minamoto no Sanetomo. And he was gay! FUCK! I was heavily upset.
And the fact that it ends with Yoshitoko's death via his sister not giving him his medicine and watching him die! Gods dammmmmnnn!
Kōki Mitani you heavenly fucker! Ah!
I also love the music, one of my favorites Taiga drama themes.
Now, that wasn't all I watched, but simply all I felt should be on the list. I refuse to put ten shows up here if I don't care enough for them.
Here's to another year.

Hello Luta,
I realize you don't know me and this is coming kind of out of nowhere but I saw you were interested in watching Hit Bite Love but were waiting for a few more episodes to drop before seeing it.
As someone who has both greatly enjoyed your D/s comments (and general reviews) and sympathized with all you've been through and who has watched the first two episodes of Hit Bite Love, I felt like giving a bit of a heads up in case no one else had. I understand you make your own, informed decisions but the MDL synopsis for the show is pretty inaccurate when it comes to Shogun (Shokun's) story and the trailer only partially clears things up.
What I mean is, the storyline following Shogun has SA and coercion. The SA occurs in ep. 2 starting at the 4:30 mark of the 4/5 section of the show on YT. Thankfully very brief but the trailer/synopsis gives no hint that this will happen.
As for the coercion, that involves the new love interest, Matteo. Now, the show is jumping around in the timeline a lot and there might be scenes in the upcoming episodes that show how Shogun comes to agree to Matteo's deal but the way ep 2 ended, Matteo is basically saying the only way available for Shogun to achieve a personal dream is to become Matteo's playmate.
As the MDL synopsis makes it sound like Shogun starts dating Matteo for social status and the trailer shows Shogun only voicing complaint about the pain play only after they're already dating, I don't feel like adequate information had been given to fully understand the story one is signing up to watching.
And after 2 episodes, Shogun still looks like a kicked puppy and he is such a sweet cinnamon roll that he really doesn't deserve it.
Hey fellow friend,
I'm not familiar with you, no, but I appreciate anyone looking out for my well-being. I do have severe issues if I'm surprised by SA, it's a huge trigger, so thank you very much for the heads-up.
I'm actually watching the first one right now. So perfect timing. There is no way I can skip this because I've fallen madly in love with Burger and King, but thanks to you, I'm going to get a buddy watcher. @notfreetoday were you planning on watching this show at all? Are any of my @coconuts-mafia planning on watching?
Hey, fellow SA if you'd like me to post trigger warnings like I did for LITA, let me know. I like to live as much of a normal life as I can and enjoy the things I would like to. But thank you for giving me the opportunity to do it safely. 💜💜💜
Love, Luta

Remembering on what would’ve been her 82nd birthday, mystery author Sue Grafton (Apr 24, 1940 - Dec 28, 2017), best known for her “alphabet series,” beginning with “‘A’ is for Alibi” which introduced her popular main character, private investigator Kinsey Millhone. The daughter of detective novelist C. W. Grafton, she said the strongest influence on her crime novels was author Ross Macdonald.
“I know there are people who believe you should forgive and forget. For the record, I'd like to say I'm a big fan of forgiveness as long as I'm given the opportunity to get even first.”

Susan Spann delivers another compelling mystery set in 16th century Japan with this sequel to her first book, “Claws of the Cat,” featuring Hiro Hattori, a master shinobi (Westerners refer to them as “ninja”), who is charged with protecting Portuguese Jesuit priest Father Mateo in the guise of a ronin translator.
In this installment, the unlikely duo are drawn into another murder case when Hiro receives a pre-dawn visit from Kazu, a brother shinobi working undercover at the shogunate. Hours earlier, someone stabbed the shogun’s cousin to death at the palace. The murder weapon? Kazu’s own dagger. While Kazu proclaims his innocence, Hiro has reason to doubt the young shinobi’s claims. Though Hiro would like nothing better than to steer clear of another investigation, the shogun, having heard of Hiro and Father Mateo’s success in solving the events of “Claws of the Cat,” summons the shinobi and foreign priest to find the killer. Delving into the case as more deaths occur, the pair uncover a plot to assassinate the shogun and overthrow the ruling clan and must take care not to lose their own lives in a power struggle while revealing the culprit.
As with Spann’s first novel, I found this book to be a great read, bridging the cultural gap between East and West, creating memorable characters, action, political intrigue, unexpected plot twists, and a fascinating exploration of feudal Japan woven into a fun mystery. Four stars.

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 3 - Short Episode #5 “Drinking in Moderation”
This is my first post of the month, so I’ll start by asking you to please support me if you can through my ko-fi, and paypal or patreon which provides access to my hakuoki blog translations and early access to my postings. Also, please let me know if you have any hakuoki drama cds that you’d be willing to share that are on my Lookout List since i either do not have audio for those cds or do not have audio that I can share…. and if you are able to remove watermarks from a video, please contact me…
special thanks to @funjoushi for helping me with Iba’s relative’s name back in July when i put this into the spreadsheet since i made that adjustment to this post after (i normally just input stuff into the spreadsheet and leave it for someone else to review it since i’m not translating from Japanese).

Hakuoki Yuugiroku 3 - Short Episode #5 “Drinking in Moderation”
Translation by KumoriYami
Tumblr media
Motoyama: I, I really didn't expect that the Shinsengumi would actually invite us to drink/s. Ha, haha......
Tumblr media
Kondou: Don't be so stiff. We knew each other while we were still in Edo.
Motoyama: Well, that's true...
Tumblr media
Iba aside, I’m not very good at kenjutsu, so it might be boring to drink with me/s you might get bored if you drink with me.... Haha...
Tumblr media
Iba: Motoyama, you shouldn't look down on yourself/put yourself down like that.
Tumblr media
Hijikata: That part of you hasn't changed at all. You’re a vassal of the Shogunate now, right?
How can you be like/Why are you like this when you fight against Imperial Nationalists and those other foreigners.
Motoyama: I, I understand that, but...
Tumblr media
Kondou: Since we've here, let's order something to drink. Motoyama-kun what would you like to drink?
Tumblr media
Motoyama: Oh, is that okay!? Ah, there won’t be an issue with that, right!? [reword later?]
Tumblr media
Hijikata: As long as this guy hears about sake, he'll get excited [reword later].
Tumblr media
Iba: This is the only thing he has in common with Nagakura-san, Harada-san and Heisuke-kun. I've also been taught how to drink by Motoyama.
Tumblr media
Motoyama: That's because Iba's adoptive father/father-in-law, Gunbei-san, asked me to to teach Hachiro all sorts of things.  I tried to take him to Yoshiwara a few times, but... he's always managed to run away/escape.
Tumblr media
Iba: ...I'm still training.
Tumblr media
Hijikata: It's not good too be too inflexible. If you’re not able to adapt at the right time, that might cause problems in the future.        For example, when being pestered/hindered by a woman.
Iba: I was also told that by my adoptive father/My father-in-law also said that.
Tumblr media
Kondou: We'll first order sake for the time being. I'll go ask about store staff for their recommendations.
Tumblr media
Hijikata: Hey, Kondou-san. You don't have to do that—
Kondou: It's fine. Everyone, please wait here.
Tumblr media
Hijikata: Really, he could have just called for a server to come over.
Even though he's the Chief of the Shinsengumi now, he's as humble as always.
Tumblr media
Iba: But that's the best thing about Kondou-san/But, I think that’s Kondou-san’s strength.
Kondou: Everyone, I’ve brought everything over! There’s shōchū and doburoku/unrefined sake, so drink whatever you want/like.
Tumblr media
Motoyama: Oh, thank you!  This amount of sake will be enough/fine for drinking!
Tumblr media
Iba: Motoyama, I'm telling you, you need to drink in moderation/be careful about how much you drink. Ours and Kondou-san’s positions are different from the time we were in Edo [reword later].
Tumblr media
Hijikata: Things were dreadful/very scary back in Edo.
Every/Each time he got drunk, he'd start by taking off his kimono, then run around with/in just his fundoshi.
Iba: Yeah... once the alcohol get to his head/once things got to his head, he'd try to jump into the nearby river. And that was despite not knowing how to swim...
Tumblr media
Motoyama: That's all in the past! Don't bring up each and everything that happened.
Tumblr media
I'm also an an adult/I'm already an adult. I’m not going to cause problems for everyone with my drinking.
Iba: That would be nice/good/It would be nice if that happened...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Motoyama: Ah~, the moon is so beautiful! Kaguya-hime must still be looking down at the earth from there.
Alright, I've decided! I'm going to/going to go to the moon! Farewell, Iba!
Iba: Please stop it, Motoyama! Saying that in such a loud voice/so loudly will cause trouble/will trouble the others in the store!
Hijikata:...Hah, I figured that it'd end up like this.
Kondou: We-Well, he's very spirited, isn't he.
Hijikata: There should be a limit to how spirited one can be...
Motoyama: The pine tress over there look suitable for climbing! Now—
Tumblr media
Take care of yourself/It’s fine, Iba! I'm a man on the moon!
Iba: I'm telling you, you can't/no! Get off of that tree!
End

Used to love that game.   Completely logic based, but not so overwhelming like chess that you can't play it over a beer. Nice cinematography BTW.

Thanks everyone who commented on our blog posts last week. Hearing from you was both informative and very helpful. As you might imagine, we spent a fair amount of time during this week’s Monday Meeting discussing the reactions we’ve encountered.
End of the day, we’ve tried from the beginning of Onyx Path‘s existence to bring in new and diverse creators onto our projects, and now that we’re starting to make that work, we’re not going to let them feel threatened here.
Dystopia Rising: Evolution art by Sam Denmark
While it might seem like a tonal shift to now start talking about the Lunars Kickstarter; all of last week and into the meeting today we looked to this KS as an awesome positive example of what we do in the midst of a lot of negativity.
Gotta have light shining in the dark, gotta have the good with the bad.
Part of why we’re grooving on the Kickstarter and all the great comments and posts about Lunars as we “leak” out parts of the manuscript, is that we’re hearing so many folks enjoying what they are reading. That’s great, and it is what we hoped for, as there’s always been a feeling on the creative level that the last two editions just didn’t do full justice to the Lunars.
As per the blog title: 3rd time’s the charm. (All the puns and allusions intended).
Here’s hoping everyone’s enthusiasm stays stoked once all the text is revealed by the end of the Kickstarter – we certainly think it’s all great!
Trinity Continuum: Aeon art by Gunship Revolution
Something else that I’m personally thrilled by is the Scarred Lands game being played by Devil’s Luck Gaming on their Twitch channel here:https://twitch.tv/videos/385880467
For me, I was very impressed by the costuming and design of the promo I saw, but started chortling when I saw the Slitherin ratman all made up and squeaking! See, I was the one who originally wrote their first descriptions in the first Creature Collection.
And no, I did not name them after the House. I had not even read those books when I gave them that name, but boy did I realize how it sounded after I did! I was going more for the feel of them slithering up out of the ground and from sewers, with dirty jagged daggers in hand.
So it’s an absolute thrill to see one of them being played, and played so well. Check it out if you can.
Dystopia Rising: Evolution art by Marco Gonzales
Finally, we talked about the Onyx Pathcast interview with Eric Zawadzki about his work on Deviant, and how he has stepped into Dave Brookshaw’s shoes as developer of the book.
You can hear Eric’s enthusiasm for Deviant, and how infectious that is during the interview, and we’re all extremely excited to be getting closer to presenting this new kind of supernatural for Chronicles of Darkness.
Eddy notes several times how the themes of Deviant are very basic, very grounded, and very evocative for our current time. Deviants are very accessible as characters, and very flexible in what could inspire them. There are just so many pop culture references that could be drawn from, as well as classical stories of quests for revenge and payback.
Take a listen, if you have the time, and I think you’ll agree just from listening to Eric, Dixie, and Eddie talk about the game. Link down below in the BLURBS! section.
Until next week, remember:

From there we’ll share emails and get you started, so when you do start producing content we’ll be able to promote it on our blog and YouTube channel!

Please check any of these out and let us know if you find or produce any actual plays of our games!
ELECTRONIC GAMING:
As we find ways to enable our community to more easily play our games, the Onyx Dice Rolling App is now live! Our dev team has been doing updates since we launched based on the excellent use-case comments by our community, and this thing is both rolling and rocking!
Here’s an update from the App devs:
Onyx Dice!  We’ve recently released the Changeling: The Lost, Trinity Continuum: Aeon dice, and now the Geist dice.  Next up on our radar is: Demon: The Fallen,  Mummy: The Resurrection,  Kindred of the East, Vampire Dark Ages, and Mummy: The Curse.
We have a serious issue on the Pixel and Motorola phones that prevent the user from using the app correctly.  A fix is coming shortly.  A temporary workaround is to minimize the app without shutting it down, and then restore it.
ON AMAZON AND BARNES & NOBLE:
You can now read our fiction from the comfort and convenience of your Kindle (from Amazon) and Nook (from Barnes & Noble).
If you enjoy these or any other of our books, please help us by writing reviews on the site of the sales venue you bought it from. Reviews really, really help us with getting folks interested in our amazing fiction!
Our selection includes these fiction books:

TODAY’S REASON TO CELEBRATE:
Today in 1971, Sean Astin was born and then was raised by Gomez Addams. Later, he searched for pirate treasure with his goony friends, played football, and became a gardener for the Baggins family. After a long journey to return a particularly memorable piece of jewelry to the manufacturer’s facilities for a refund, he was elected Mayor of his town of residence. Let’s hear it for “our Sam”!

GoT 7x07 Musings
My initial reaction to “The Dragon and the Wolf”
Tumblr media
Available for $49.99 at Macy’s!
Well, I was wrong last week, and how the hell was I fooled again? I thought the fact that people were paying attention to logic over spectacle meant criticisms might last, but wow. No. Rave reviews for probably one of the most plodding, unmotivated, illogical episodes of the show. The only time I wasn’t bored to tears was when I was pissed off (Theon), or literally LOLing (Bran-bot).
Let’s dive in. Or you could read Jess’s much more coherent analysis first.
Cheryl’s Landing
This entire thing, the whole sequence showing Deadpan’s troops marching and how impressive everything was, just reminded me how little sense them negotiating for a cease-fire even means
WHAT ARE THEY WORRIED CHERYL IS GOING TO DO
do they just want her to grind her troops down too? Because they didn’t ask her to do that
is Deadpan that attached to Dragonstone?
they literally brought a wight and got one of Deadpan’s dragons killed so they could have proof, so Cheryl would just sit her pretty head on the Iron Throne and…keep on keepin’ on
D&D must be paid by the word “cock”
I really don’t want to dive into the other walk-and-talks. Of course Pod’s dick arc continued. Of course Brienne and Sandor chummed it up about Arya (actually that one worked fairly well). Of course Tyrion and Bronn…I don’t even know. D&D are not half as good at writing these scenes as they think they are.
I loved the pit being an abandoned colosseum (wtf were the Targs *doing* with their dragons) way the hell away from the city.
Tumblr media
That’s some nice stadium seating!
I actually thought it was dumb of Deadpan not to show up with just Drogon. That could be her mount. Pretend the other two are resting. Bringing 2 dragons would just raise questions, like it did.
Cleganebowl is coming guys. Pushing towards healing is a DUMB arc.
It was physically painful to have a scene with these two powerful-ass queens sitting while the menz patiently explained the situation.
Anyone want to venture a guess who Euron was playing this week? I think I’ve got my impression of him down at least
So. Okay. The wight acted not like a wight’s ever acted before, but whatever; props to Jonny for bringing a visual display to the quarterly review.
Here’s the thing: Cheryl and Euron already knew about the Golden Company, which meant Cheryl and Euron already knew they weren’t going to take part in whatever kumbaya truce they were angling for
This means LITERALLY EVERYTHING THAT WAS SAID IS USELESS until the Cheryl/Larry breakup
Cheryl asked Jonny not to take any sides. If he had said yes, what would she have done with the Golden Company, exactly? They’d still be coming. So it was a meaningless request of no purpose. Or did she think offering her aid would lead to that outcome, in which case…what would she have done with the Golden Company, exactly? It doesn’t sound like she was ever actually going to offer her aid (how would that have worked, by the way?), especially the way she told Larry about her deal with Euron…so why was she asking for this? Was it just so Jon could get chided about being stupid so he could then assert that his dad was kind of cool for being honorable?
You can keep playing logical loopy loop with that question, just like the Tyrion/Cheryl convo was a big loopy loop.
Cheryl touching her belly to play Tyrion was super clever in isolation, except the reveal she was playing him still leaves the question like HOW DO YOU FAKE FIGHTING THE ARMY OF THE DEAD? Also they didn’t even ask Cheryl for that. What did Tyrion *want* from her, exactly? What does anyone want? AHHHHHH
The Jonerys sexual tension was laughable. Deadpan was regarding Jon like a moron.
Tumblr media
Wow just look at that crackling chemistry.
Could Missandei have like…done anything? She and Grey Worm didn’t even get a moment wth?
Cherry Bomb’s explosion was so unmotivated. Cheryl was making decent points, especially since after the force, with Jon and Deadpan’s alliance, they’re fucked. This was no worse than blowing up a sept and that this was the straw that broke Larry’s back was seriously moronic.
I did like the snow on Larry. Makes me wish we had gotten AFFC adapted.
Dragonstone
It’s not worth talking about the scene that existed to be like “however will boatsex happen?”
The Jon/Theon scene kind of pissed me off, though I know it worked for some people. It’s not even really Theon being a captive of Ned’s so “YOU SHOULD LOVE HIM” is an odd message. It’s that our whole fucking justification for Sansa’s rape-revenge arc, other than making her the player she needed to be (I’m going to hurl), was that it was more dramatically satisfying to have Theon rescue a real Stark and right that “great sin” of betraying them.
And remember how at the beginning of S6, it actually seemed like the Theon/Sansa relationship was…something? But then he had plot things to do and fucked off in favor if his “real” sister, because fuck thematic significance?
My point is, out of all the ‘Starks’ to forgive Theon, it was *Sansa* who specifically mattered, as horrifying and awful a decision as it was, and they just punted out anything between them so Theon could get screamed at and triggered by his blood-relative sister. And after all that shit, they NOW try and pull back in the Stark Significance and how if Jonny gives him a nod of approval, it’s all fine? No. Fuck that.
Also fuck to bloody hell the scene of Theon winning over the Ironboors by HAR HAR not feeling anything when he gets kneed in the crotch, and proceeding to punch a guy to death (or whatever)
It was Larry stopping a sword with his golden hand, but even less tasteful. Especially in the same episode with the worst-written eunuch jokes heard to date.
Winterhell
I mean…what’s to even say? Sansa was playing Batfinger this entire time? Or did she decide the guy needs to be executed *after* Arya threatened her life (in private) because that could win over her little sister’s loyalty
Or was Arya in on it, but you never know when Batfinger is hiding in the floorboards
When was Bran in on it? Did he seek out Sansa, complement the dress she wore the day she was pulled from her horse in the King’s Landing riot, and then tell her all his dirty deets? Did Sansa ask him to do her a solid because Arya was trying to kill them?
At what point was Arya clued in? Was that political show in the hall something she knew about?
And why was this whole drawn out thing to punk Batfinger necessary anyway? Did she think it’d be more dramatically satisfying if he was surprised? He’d probably have been surprised if she did it at the end of last season, because she had the Lysa Card in her pocket for YEARS now, not to mention he sold her to the Boltons and lied about it to everyone
Okay. Cool. Batfinger is dead. Hoisted by his own petard…or something. Except not at all
D&D’s desire to keep us guessing until the last minute is just more of this “omg here’s the twist” writing where everything seems random and unmotivated. Sometimes there’s a satisfaction in a well-executed plan that we watch unfold, and shit.
Also, is Sansa just that over Arya threatening to literally kill her? “Eh, you’re strong.” It was nice seeing sisters *not* wanting to kill each other for a scene, but the fuck?
That said, glad to see a continuation of the sith robe in Winterhell
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But who wore it better?
Boatsex montage ft. Sam and Bran
Sam sidling in is the funniest thing I’ve seen in a while. And of course Bran emotes for him more than any of his family all year.
I want a montage of Bran telling people he’s the 3ER and them all shrugging “I don’t know what that is.” Sansa did it best
Bran literally just…opened his mouth and expo-dumped. This is “that’s my father!” but extended for like 5 solid fucking minutes
Also it’s amazing that Sam took in anything Gilly was saying about Ragger because hmmm….wouldn’t you think that kind of thing NEEDS FOLLOW-UP?
Okay okay. So. Ragger annulled Elia which means Rhaenys and Aegon were legally speaking, disinherited. And I guess this means that Ragger is now forfeit of any parenting duties? He just really likes the name Aegon and is free to pass it on to Lyanna
She’s not even pregnant! Or if somehow she was, women die in childbirth! Who the fuck disinherits their kids when they’re the heir of a throne in a feudal order? He even had a boy named Aegon already! WHAT THE FUCK
The power of love compelled him to say “fuck all” to the line of succession and piss off the entirety of Dorne? Ragger is kind of lucky the war broke out…
”They were in love.” Good guy Ragger doesn’t kidnap 15-year-olds…he makes sure to woo them first (god the power differential there)
Now for boatsex itself, which was shown over this crapshack montage. Deadpan and Jonny didn’t even SPEAK before this. They’re just like…bored, and then they fuck. There’s sweet music and a voiceover *about* love, so it must mean they’re IN love?? How does that work? All I could think of was this.
Where was this love supposed to have been built? The caves? That time Missandei shipped it? I’m so confused.
Then as if to confirm this was just Jonny and Deadpan trying to fuck away the hours (why not, honestly? Get some.), we are treated to Tyrion outside their door looking like…hurt that this means they’re not going to play Scrabble with him or something
Tumblr media
And the Wall came tumbling down
Ice magic + fire-made-flesh = blue fire that’s super hot. Okay.
This looked nice? I think? Kind of hard to take dragonriding Shogun seriously, but the effects were good
Whatever fear I used to have of the Army of the Dead is gone. They showed it to us too early or it’s become too similar to “generic forces of bad” a la orcs in ROTK or something. They’re just dudes, shuffling over. With percussive music.
I have to find a way to cut this to the Curb Your Enthusiasm theme like I did last year.
What a waste of a season.
Top 3 nitpicks:
Zombie!Gregor’s mere existence in a scene about the danger of the walking dead
Dothraki are a two week ride from Winterhell. Just…don’t give us numbers D&D. It’s not helping
Grey Worm and the Unsullied being TOTALLY FINE after Euron’s fleet had shown up at Casterly Rock like, weeks ago? Is this even a nitpick??

“It’s hard to navigate through a woman’s pride.“
-          Arsène Lupin III, Lupin the Third Part IV (Ep. 11)
“What is it…the dream of Italy?”
-          Rebecca Rossellini
The Toonami Trending Rundown for September 9-10, 2017. Perhaps to have a “blast from the past” hour to complement Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop returns for another run. And among the many moments with our current shows, the Tournament of Destroyers would begin, while Lupin goes on a double date with Fujiko and Rebecca, and Nagato tells the story of his troubled past to Naruto.
On Twitter JoJo’s and every show from Hunter x Hunter to Attack on Titan with the exception of Shippuden would successfully trend in the US during their respective East Coast airings. Meanwhile on Tumblr, Toonami would trend as with JoJo’s and Hunter x Hunter.
And while we didn’t see any Dragon Ball related trends on the night, Dragon Ball Super did make an impact regardless as the series would make it to Nielsen Social’s top 5 most talked about shows on the day on Twitter and Facebook, making it to the #2 spot.
This week’s feature was a game review of Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. It received 8.5 out of 10 score.

It’s been a banner year for Samurai Jack with its long awaited conclusion back in May, and the Emmys have rewarded Gennedy and the crew for their amazing work, as Samurai Jack season 5 has received 4 awards for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation for episodes XCIII, XCIII, XCII, and XCV. A big congratulations and a job well done for Gennedy Tartakosvy, all of Cartoon Network, and the Samurai Jack and Toonami fanbase as a whole.
Not much else to say other than we’ll see you tonight for another round of the better cartoon show. Later.

Recap time!!! And I'm not just talking about this post being a recap-view, because really, Kyuranger episode 27 is indeed a RECAP-episode! A journey back in time, both literally and figuratively...
- If you didn't see it coming, then well... you're not alone. Me neither! The show isn't even actually pulling off something 'new' here, because it IS that time of the year for mid-season recap (for comparison sake, Zyuohger had theirs in episode 27 as well). I guess Kyuranger has been so fast-paced and its plots are so tight, that I honestly didn't expect a clip-show to land on my feet. Especially following a melancholic cliffhanger that involves one of its member turning evil. - Then again, this IS TOEI we're talking about, so it's not like they're going to abandon their annual pattern, right? Inspite of that, the company almost always (mind you, not every year fares the same) finds a way to make a Super Sentai clip-show to be... FUN to watch. In the case of Kyuranger, it's through an unexpected occurence within the ORION, during its 'Time Travel' journey: stowaways onboard the spaceship!!! Fun fact: In my opinion, it's a fitting episode to do a recap. The team reviews their adventures so far, while onboard the ORION as they travel back in time? Coincidence? Not really. Clever writing, if you ask me. Oh and yeah, we're getting twice of them a year now. The second clip-show will usually take place later after the New Year break. - Just to refresh our memory, the 'Time Travel' team consists of (in numerical order) Stinger, Champ, Raptor, Spada, Commander Xiao, and Tsurugi. Everyone immediately splits up to apprehend these intruders. Who are they? The lesser Indavers, a.k.a. the Jark Matter cannon fodders. Oops, I mean grunts. How did they come onboard? Apparently, Akyanba told them to infiltrate the spaceship during that Barbeque moment. Yeah, another good proof of her cunningness. - Oh, before you wonder why ORION had such poor security, the answer is too obvious: Balance was alone in the spaceship at the time. And he was also tweaking the system to integrate Holorogium. That's probably why the security didn't alert their presence back then. Holy Moly indeed! Gotta love Tsurugi's 'holy moly'-s hillarious outburst though... XD - Stinger and Champs apprehend the Yellow-striped Indaver in what seems to be the Private/Training Room. Xiao and Raptor catch a White-striped one in the Small Engine Room. Tsurugi and Spada corner and interrogate the Blue-striped in the Kitchen. The fourth is a feminine-looking Purple-striped one. This one (he? she?) is chased by Xiao... who then clumsily hurts his back, forcing Stinger and Champ to take over, but is later chained-down by Spada using the #40 Andromeda Kyu Globe. - These Indavers bring their own surprise to the story. First of all, they can actually SPEAK. Turns out, they have been wearing masks/helmets all these time! So they are basically the show's equivalent to the... StormTroopers, right? With one key difference: these helmets prevent them from communicating, hence why we haven't heard them talking until now. Second, they are lifeforms called Inda. 'Blue' claims that they are fed up of being poorly treated by the Shogunate. That's the reason why they sneak into the ship and wants to join the Rebellion. Hmmm... is that the honest truth? Third, two of them have showed up in previous episodes before. A clever twist that provides an excuse to include footage from past episodes, even if it might merely be an afterthought. - Speaking of past episodes, here's a quick list of what the clip-show includes: 1) Kyuranger's debut episodes. The core ones are from episode 1 to 5. The extra members are from episode 9, 10, and 21. 'Blue' reveals he was one of the Indavers who got hit by Lucky's 'meteor shower' when he first used Leo Kyu Globe on Planet Jugjug. While 'Yellow' was among the Indavers who got kicked by Ursa Minor Skyblue when he utilized the 'giant' power of Ursa Major Kyu Globe for the first time. 2) Voyagers. Along with their various mecha combinations for Kyuren-Oh, Ryutei-Oh, Ryutei Kyuren-Oh, Gigant Phoenix, and of course Kyutamajin. 3) Kyu Globes. The Change and Skill varieties, including what categories they can be classified into. According to Spada, there are ones that can be used for attacks, for utilitarian purposes, for plain fun, as well as... strange ones. No kidding, that's his actual words! Oh, and yes, there are plot-related ones, like the Argo Navis components. 4) Random scenes from various episodes, including that small crossover with Gavan and Dekaranger, and 'Rivalry of the Reds'. Mainly the ones showcasing the tumultuous bond between the members. - Speaking of bond, we get to see briefly how team 'Save Naga' is doing as well. Hammy is still feeling guilty and down about Naga, Kotarou is looking concerned about that, Lucky and Balance are both annoyingly optimistic and carefree as always, while Garu is still unsure about Tsurugi. Oh yeah, that last one reminds me. This episode confirms that Tsurugi still retains his self-centered personality! It's more tone-down than before, of course. He still doesn't like to be ordered, and even thinks the Kyurangers are being too kind and naive to show sympathy for the four Indavers. He firmly thinks, that they deserve to be thrown into the time hole instead. Ouch!! - And well, about that? Turns out he's right. There's a fifth Indaver, 'Red', who has been hiding in the Main Computer Room all these time. He reveals (albeit hillariously ignored with the Barbeque talk) that the Indas are created by Jark Matter, so it's completely unlikely for them to rebel. Those other four was merely a diversion so he can mess around with the system, and sabotage the 'Time Travel' plan. - The ORION is forced to land... in the Cretaceous Era! As soon as they step out, the team even encounters the real Gabutyra (notice the hair? And how it just plain ignores them as they bicker? LOL). After a failed-attempt to sway Tsurugi into their side, these Indavers go ahead and challenge the team. With the hope that their victory earns them a promotion into Tsuyo-Indavers or Malistrates, that is. Completely forgetting how they are also... lost in time. LOL. They even have their own roll call sequence, as Jark Sentai, Go-Indaver. - Team (sans Raptor, who stays behind to repair the ORION) decides to deal with them... without even transforming into Kyurangers. Yes, we're getting a very early (and clearly incomplete) suitless roll call!!! In the end, Tsurugi ruthlessly and selfishly (should we be surprised?) breaks the rule, and transforms into Phoenix Soldier to wipe out all Go-Indaver with his Phoenix End. The others are occupied with Xiao's back issue anyway. LOL. - The fact that Jark Matter tries (and fails) to stop them from going back in time, proves that something big DID occur back then. Can the 'Time Travel' team uncovers the secret behind Don Armage's seemingly immortality? Will the 'Save Naga' team be able to rescue one of their own who was lost in the darkness? That my Toku-loving friend, is the story for another day...
Overall: I know what some of you are thinking. A recap/clip-show episode already?! Then again, one would easily admit, that it WAS definitely enjoyable. Part of it was our classic 'Bad Guys turn Good' trope of the season, but the rest of it was just plain having fun. And I'm not any bit complaining about that. After a doze of emotional rollercoaster, this was one of the lighter episodes that's obviously aimed to be that way. After all, we DO need to take a breather every now and then, right? Today's episode is excellent to those who haven't been keeping up with the show. But the good thing is, even for a clip-show, Kyuranger still manages to 'shake things up' (easily reminded me of Go-kaiger). This episode still offered something new to its world-building/mythology, and progressed the story even if not in a major way. Of course, things are expected to be heating up again real soon. So hold on to your horses, and prepare yourself for another round of wild ride... Next week: Balance vs Naga. Oh Nooooo....!! And Sir Orion makes his official debuts!!! PS: Yeah, feel free to call me inconsistent, but I've decided to change Sir Olion's name into Sir Orion once again. Because... well, we'll likely get the answer to that this Sunday. Also, the spin-off series "Kyuranger High School Wars" will be arriving very soon on September 9th, 2017. It is directed by Koichi Sakamoto, and will be exclusively available on TOEI Tokusatsu Fan Club app. You can check out its first official trailer online! Looks fun, doesn't it?
Episode 27 Score: 7,9 out of 10

Weekly Review: Samurai Jack Season 5 Episode 6
Warning: Lengthy Post Which Contains Spoilers
Tumblr media
Previously on Samurai Jack…
The Scotsman leads three armies to the tower of Aku, only for the Shogun of Sorrow to almost immediately annihilate most of his men, including himself. His spirit persists, however, telling his daughters to regroup and find Jack. Meanwhile, the Samurai teaches Ashi the truth of Aku’s horrendous world and at the same time learns about a kidnapping that can still be undone. Ashi finds a way to free an army of children from a twisted form of mind control, only to have them fall to the ground unconscious. Jack, believing his interference has killed the children walks away into a green fog and vanishing alongside the Green Warrior.
Tumblr media
We start 97 up in the sky, as Ashi rides an aircraft to Jack’s last known location. She has been desperately searching for her new mentor, and has thus made herself more conspicuous than normal. Two large, hooded figures attack her, proclaiming that the woman they believe to be a bounty hunter of Aku will not hurt the Samurai. Ashi insists that she doesn't want to hurt Jack, she only wants to find him before it is too late. The figures reveal themselves to be the Woolies, giant furry timid creatures from the earlier seasons. They tell their tale of how Samurai Jack saved them from enslavement, and how they have hailed him as a hero ever since. Afterwards, an employee aboard the aircraft tells Ashi they have reached Jack's last known location. Ashi gives her thanks before jumping off, and landing safely in the forest below.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, in a familiar looking pile of rubble, a set of robotic eyes blink open. It appears the robotic assassin from the very first episode of Season 5, Scaramouche has somehow survived, albeit as a decapitated head. He bounces with glee as he begins his long journey to Aku, anxious to tell him the news about Samurai Jack losing his sword. Remember, Aku does not know this, so if Scaramouche actually succeeds, Aku will destroy Jack with ease.
Tumblr media
Elsewhere, Ashi continues her search for Jack only to bump into a tribe of archers who have fought numerous Beetle Bots, some of which now scurry away. They warn her to run if she is in league with Aku, but Ashi once more states that she is looking for Jack. The archers extend a hand in friendship, as any friend of Jack's is a friend to them. Ashi reluctantly accepts the gesture, not wanting to upset them though still unsure if she is truly the Samurai’s friend. The archers show Ashi their civilization, formed on the spire of a mountain. The place is vibrant, colorful and peaceful in spite of the earlier conflict. The archers proclaim that this place would not exist if not for Jack, showing her a flower covered tribute to their hero. They too tell a tale of how the Samurai helped them, and it is here where my professional demeanor must briefly withdraw.
Tumblr media
*inhales*
OHMYGOD IT'S THE THREE BLIND ARCHERS! They are my earliest memory of Samurai Jack! For those not in the know, these guys found a well that could grant any wish. They wanted to be the most powerful warriors in the land, but the well made them blind monsters in the process. This was because the well was made by Aku as a trap for Jack. If the Archers didn't kill him, the well would. But, Jack managed to free the Archers from their curse and destroy the well with a pain-filled scream. That scene has stayed in my head for years and it is so awesome to see the Archers again after so long! This is of the the many reason why Season Five is so amazing to me, and it only gets better from here. But we’ll get to that in a moment.
Tumblr media
*ahem*
Back to the actual story. As Ashi once more sets off on her quest, Scaramouche persists in his. He manages to find a boat that is heading for Aku’s domain, and is finally accepted aboard after a few comedic attempts. This leads to a joke that comes far out of left field, one that I do not want to spoil for the sake of newcomers. Let’s just say Season 5 isn't on Adult Swim for no reason.
Tumblr media
Ashi, meanwhile, stumbles across a massive outdoor rave party. Once more she asks about Jack, only to be told of another instance of his heroism, only this time in song. Olivia, another character from the previous seasons, sings of how she and her people were once mind controlled through Aku’s twisted music, but were freed by Jack. Now she rebels with her people through music, as they dance throughout the night. Even Ashi is swept up in the beat for a brief moment before pressing on in her quest.
Tumblr media
As Ashi continues into the night, she comes across a river, and remembers another cruelty of her mother. The High Priestess claimed that Aku was born of darkness (molded by it), so his Daughters must follow suit. How do they accomplish this? By being pushed into a pit full of smoldering ashes, making their skin black. Ashi cringes at the memory, and plunges herself into the water, scrubbing and scraping away the ashes until morning. She lets her hair down and crafts a new outfit out of the nearby foliage before continuing on once more.
Tumblr media
Back on the ship, Scaramouche finds a phone booth, where he makes a collect call to Aku. Before he can tell his boss about Jack's sword, he is interrupted by a crowd of anthropomorphic dogs nearby. He rudely tries to get them to shut up, to which the dogs respond by tossing him overboard, which will no doubt hinder his progress if he is ever to make another appearance.
Tumblr media
At a dingy bar on a rainy night, Ashi takes refuge from the storm. The bar is crowded with various warriors, all sporting their own kind of wounds. Ashi once more mentions the Samurai, but this time everyone around her laughs. It appears everyone in the bar was once an enemy of Jack's, even the bartender who was once known as Da Samurai, a wannabe warrior who once challenged Jack only to be defeated with ease. He has since hung up his blade and became a bartender. And then, another fangasm worthy cameo occurs…
Tumblr media
OMAIGAWD IT’S DEMONGO!! He’s back!!! He must have escaped the Pit of Hate due to Aku not caring anymore! Another lesson for those not aware of the character; Demongo was one of Aku’s most powerful warriors in the original show. His gimmick was that whenever he defeated powerful warriors, he would enslave their essence and have them fight for him forever. This is why he has come to Da Samurai’s Bar, to find powerful warriors to capture. But upon seeing the sorry state of most of the bar patrons, he leaves while saying he has come to the wrong place.
Tumblr media
Soon afterwards, Ashi steps out of the bar only to bump into a small girl with large eyes. She asks if Ashi is a friend to the Samurai. Ashi finally says yes, to which the girl points her in the direction of a graveyard before enigmatically disappearing.
Tumblr media
In the graveyard, Ashi finds Jack in a trance-like state. She tries to talk to him, but the Green Warrior intervenes. It seems he was not a hallucination, but rather a spirit who has brought Jack to this graveyard to perform his last honorable act: sepukku or a Samurai’s Suicide. Ashi tries to stop Jack, but the Spirit won't allow it, as he attacks her while Jack holds a blade to his chest. Ashi tells him of all the wonderful things she has seen, and how he is responsible for all of them. The Spirit retorts that Jack is also responsible for all of the deaths, especially those of the children from the previous episode. Ashi not only retaliates by saying that the children actually lived, but that Jack has also saved another lost child: her. As the Spirit prepares to silence her forever, Jack slices him in half, his warrior’s spirit finally back for good. He marvels at her new look and tells her that the time has come for him to finally find his sword.
Tumblr media
As you can no doubt tell, this was one of my favorite episodes of the season so far, which is saying a lot considering the quality of the previous episode being just as fantastic as this one. Not only were there so many easter eggs and cameos in this episode, but we also got the completed transformation of Ashi from blind assassin to enlightened ally. She has seen all of the good Jack has done in comparison to all of Aku's destruction, and has thus left behind her past both metaphorically and literally. One can say that her bath was like a baptism, washing away the ashes on her body and the sins of her past. Not to mention we finally get to see what the Green Warrior was after speculating for weeks, and I’m pleased to see that my theory about him representing Jack’s grief and pushing the Samurai to his death was at least partially correct. And now, with Jack’s fighting spirit truly here to stay, we're finally going to see what became of Jack's sword after the briefest of flashbacks in episode one.
Tumblr media
If I do have to complain about the smallest of things, there are two aspects of the episode that are a tad lackluster. As much as I liked Scaramouche, I can't help but feel like his scenes were simple padding to keep the episode at a minimum time length. Not to mention that joke he told still throws me off a bit upon remembering it. Also, the appearance of Demongo was far too brief, and I feel like we might not see him again in spite of his newfound strength. But I suppose his appearance was meant to point out that there are few warriors of notable merit now that Jack has hacked and slashes his way to the top, making for a chuckle worthy joke.
In either case, I absolutely cannot wait for the next episode, same Samurai Jack time, same Samurai Jack place.
In the meantime, never stop rambling, TM

Anime Review: Ninja Resurrection
This is kind of a weird choice for my first review, but it’s the most recently watched show for me.
Tumblr media
Ninja Resurrection is kind of a strange anime to exist for a few reasons, the least of which being that it was never completed.
Another thing that’s noticeable from the cover is that it was definitely counting on people confusing it for a sequel to Ninja Scroll. It’s kinda got the same font, and the main character had the same name, Jubei. Before the internet really took off, we didn’t have a lot of resources to find out that no, it definitely isn’t, so people like me in high school saw this on the shelf of their local Sam Goody and went “oh word? There’s more Ninja Scroll?” Even better was that these tapes were crazy expensive back then and $25 (imports!) was a lot of money for a high schooler, so I never even got to see the second one until much later.
Now, aesthetically this movie is very pretty and the animation is well done. It’s definitely fun to watch except the cringy edgelord scenes.
Tape 1: Revenge of Jubei
The story basically follows a real life rebellion in Tokugawa period japan of Christian farmers being persecuted by the shogunate, led by our main character Jubei. That’s about where it stops being realistic. Turns out the right hand man to the Christ-like leader is actually using him to bring Satan into the world (?) using some sort of black magic that is shown onscreen in a totally ‘90s 3-edgy-5-me supernatural rape scene featuring a severed finger. Yup. Also Jubei and his ninja team infiltrate the Christian compound by skydiving from a huge kite using cloaks as parachutes, but honestly that’s the type of dope anime shit young me loved.
Tape 2: Hell’s Spawn
Honestly it’s hard to believe this even comes after the first tape. It’s just Jubei lounging and fending off this young ass girl who’s all “you promised me you’d marry me when I was 8” and then there’s some more edgy rape and one kick ass fight scene. There’s a lot of political maneuvering for a 40 minute episode and then it ends up with that guy from the first one finally getting his Satan-rebirth-via-rape which leads up to....
Tape 3
They didn’t make a tape three.
This was definitely a cash grab by a studio looking to make something out of the late ‘90s anime boom in America and I’m a little surprised they even bothered to dub it since it wasn’t even finished. Definitely not required watching for budding anime fans, but if you wanna watch some ninja shit, it’s definitely got that.

Uchuu Sentai Kyuranger Episode 1 Review
As promised, the subs are out, so here’s my review of the first episode. I don’t know if I have more than one episode review in me, but we’ll see how much people like this review and if I have enough spare time when future episodes come out. If you like this review, please don’t hesitate in letting me know!
Anyway, our highly anticipated story begins by immediately following up on one of this season’s most ambitious promises: the scale. We get a brief scene of Earth being invaded by our villains, the Jark Matter Shogunate, but we immediately pull out to see that our little blue planet is just one of many planets in need of a saviour, and it’s left ambiguous whether or not we will ever see it again in the course of the series.
With no time to dwell, we are then taken to another planet that Jark Matter is invading, and we are introduced to three of our nine heroes: Hammy/Chamaeleon Green, Champ/Taurus Black, and Sparda/Dorado Yellow. These three are all well acted (to those of you who saw my earlier first impressions post, yes I appreciated Hammy’s actress more on a second viewing), and play off each other well with great chemistry. I would have loved to see them be the focus of the episode.
Unfortunately, tradition dictates that we need a guy dressed in red to be the leader, which brings us to our first negative of the show. Enter Lucky, another successor in the proud tradition of screaming, hot-blooded red rangers, here to assault your eardrums with his catchphrase “YOSHA LUCKY!!!” Honestly, on paper, the catchphrase sounds like such a minor thing to complain about, and really as far as catch phrases go, it’s really not that bad. Except that he says it nine times in the first episode. And he always screams it at the top of his lungs. No exceptions. Not only that, but he can also be a bit of a jerk, calling characters who don’t want to risk their lives cowards who don’t deserve to fight. Don’t worry, this attitude gets him punched later.
Now I’ve read some people comparing Lucky to Ninninger’s Takaharu, and I really don’t feel that’s a fair comparison. Takaharu’s actor (while really not a bad actor by any stretch) was clearly not at his best when trying to play up the character’s hot-blooded nature. Lucky’s actor is, and so his moments of screaming and rushing off seem less forced and generally make him an easier pill to swallow than Takaharu was. That being said, those of you who found Yamato from Zyuohger to be a breath of fresh air might be lamenting having to deal with another hyperactive leader for the next year.
Anyway, having crashed into the middle of a fight between the three Kyurangers and Jark Matter, Lucky immediately decides he wants to join their crusade against evil. The problem? Lucky doesn’t have a Kyu Tama, the magical device that allows the Kyurangers to transform. The “solution”? Lucky immediately sets out on his broken space scooter with absolutely no idea where to look or what he even need to do to earn a Kyu Tama, leaving the other Kyurangers to scramble after him before the poor sap gets himself killed.
*sigh* Only 49 more episodes of this guy to go.
Anyway, I’ll stop the plot synopsis there before this gets too long, let’s instead talk about what didn’t work. Like almost every modern Sentai before it, Kyuranger feels the need to rush everything into one episode. Spoiler alert: we get 5 Kyurangers assembled this episode, as well as a megazord fight. And while I don’t think it was as rushed as Ninninger’s premiere there was a lot to shove into twenty-five minutes. So much so that there was no sense of world-building. We know absolutely nothing about this vast universe except that Jark Matter is taking over everything and that’s bad. But the Kyurangers are here to stop them and that’s good! Oh... and there’s apparently a space-weather station on the radio. That’s all we get, we don’t learn anything about what the Kyu Tama really are or where they come from, or how the Kyuranger got the equipment to harness their power, or anything about the culture or mythology of the universe we are supposed to care about our heroes saving.
On top of that, we know even less about the villains. We know the names of two of them, Don Almage and Eridron, but not much else. We know Almage is kind of a jerk who blasts his underlings with psychic power via hologram (not sure how that works) and Eridron is kind of a jerk who... is not as high ranking as Almage which probably means he’ll try and betray him later. With Zyuohger’s premiere, we knew Ginis was a lackadaisical conqueror who clearly thirsted for some real entertainment, Naria was his stoic second-in-command, Azald was the boisterous warrior, and Kubar was the scheming intellectual. None of those are very much I grant you, but it’s still more than what we got from Jark Matter. We never even hear the names of the enemy mooks or the elite mooks, making the battlefield look like a hodgepodge. Even during the megazord fight, when an elite mook is grown to giant-size to fight Kyurenoh, he comes completely out of nowhere with no explanation for why he’s giant.
So with all of this in mind, it probably sounds like I hated this episode, doesn’t it? Was there anything good to find here?
Oh, goodness, yes.
The special effect for this season are most certainly on point. For anyone afraid that this would be an Earth-bound season that just happened to have a space-them just because, fear not. We get fights on three different planets and in space itself, and the show makes sure we know it. Not once did I look at a planet the Kyurangers were fighting on and think to myself, “this is so clearly Earth”. No, this show is about world hopping, and it makes sure you know it. Either through impressive uses of CGI (though I would have liked to see more practical effects for the zords other than Leo Voyager) or practical effects and set designs, this show will definitely be visually distinctive.
And then there’s the fight choreography. While Zyuohger’s first episode still has me wowed the most for most impressive fight scenes, Kyuranger comes in close second with some incredible looking stunts and weapons. There are some obvious stock-footage scenes of special finisher set ups, but unlike in Zyuohger, the actual execution of these attacks is integrated into the episode footage rather handily, making the fights dynamic and eye-popping.
And then there’s the megazord fight. My goodness, the megazord fight. One of my concerns with Kyurenoh’s limb swapping ability was “Okay, if you’re going to have that, then each limb should have its own ability or function so you have a reason to choose a certain formation over the others.” Short version: they do. I won’t spoil the specifics, but there is no component of Kyurenoh that does not feel useful in some way, and the mech utilizes all of them to provide a deeply satisfying, eye-catching battle. Not only that, but the mecha fight takes place on a small ice-planet/moon, giving a welcome change of scenery from the usual cities. Those who look carefully will also see a tiny research facility on the planet, adding yet another impressive detail and adding a nice sense of scale to the fight.
And a final note: while I did criticize the show for rushing things, I do want to point out that, in a show where the selling point was nine rangers, it could have been much worse. Instead we get Lucky, Garu, Champ, Hammy, and Sparda joining the team this episode, with Raptor serving as mission control and Balance and Naga making a cameo at the end. Stinger didn’t even show up and while he is one of my most anticipated characters this season, I appreciated the show of restraint.
Overall, I complain a lot, but this really was a good episode all things considered. I’ve come to expect that the first episode of a modern Super Sentai be a half-hour toy commercial at this point, and as far as those toy commercials go, this one was pretty good. The second episode is usually the one that introduces the plot, so it will be the best judge of whether or not we have a good show on our hands. As it stands now though, I have no reason not to tune in next week to find out.
