spent ages preparing to audition for a role I really really wanted and it's looking like (still unconfirmed) they might not even be holding auditions at all but have just given it to someone directly

ugh i really am kind of fucking devastated about shadow and bone. it's not even about wanting to see specific book moments with specific blorbos, even tho there were in fact So Many storylines that the varying actors never got to play with the way they deserved to..... i just.

I hate how now every time a discourse is being had about classic Disney movies, the godawful remakes (or retellings) have to be included in the conversation. It's no longer just the animated movie that is adressed. You can't discuss Aladdin without its 2019 remake, Sleeping Beauty without its 2014 remake, The Little Mermaid without its 2023 remake, Beauty and the Beast without its 2017 remake, The Lion King without its 2019 remake, Mulan without its 2020 remake, etc, etc, etc. I hate how they will be forever attached to these classic movies. It actually pisses me off to no avail.

i think the fabelmans and top gun will get oscar nominations (voting ended on tuesday anyway, before the baftas), but the bafta (and SAG in top gun’s case) snub(s) make it less likely they can be considered too contenders for best picture. HOWEVER…coda did not get a bafta nomination last year, and well! look what happened. unlike the fabelmans or top gun, coda was an underdog all awards season. top gun is an underdog as a less prestigious genre film, but it’s failure to secure a SAG nomination puts it out of step with coda (i think failing to secure BOTH is unprecedented for BP contenders in recent years). the academy loves spielberg, but he was just in contention last year, and the film secured a win in ariana debose for best supporting actress, but nothing else. are they really going to be eager to give him the top prize for this one?

it does look more and more - looking at wins so far (1 for EEAO, 1 for fabelmans, and 1 for banshees) plus nominations (5 for EEAO, 4 for fabelmans, 5 for banshees), that are two frontrunners may end up being EEAO and banshees. among those two, banshees - with a non-american cast, a non-conventional director/screenwriter, comedy genre - has many attributes of an underdog, but so does EEAO - majority minority cast, first time award contending filmmakers, and a male supporting actor frontrunner (moonlight, green book, and coda all had male winners in the best supporting category). however…BP is also a studio award. all the social media driven (and bought) hype behind a24 makes searchlight pictures look like bleecker street. and a24 has only won best picture just once, with moonlight, and back then it was a genuine underdog. nowadays? i’m not so sure. and i don’t know that in 2017 they threw as much money and hype behind moonlight’s canpaign as they are now with EEAO. but maybe EEAO is poised to have a parasite year where it dominates the water cooler, pop culture, and critical buzz and then dominates award season? hmmmm
