Roman Reflections
One week on from my departure from Rome, I've had some time to reflect on my study abroad experience.
What am I going to miss about Rome? A lot of things come to mind. The city is bustling and full of energy, and I'll miss the amazing architecture and ancient archaeological gems which are casually integrated into the city. At the same time, the city was very peaceful, and I'll miss wandering through the narrow streets, getting sprinkled with water from the people watering their plants in the apartments up above and smelling the pungent scents from the alleyways. Early mornings were my favorite time to explore the city, especially on an electric bike. I also enjoyed being able to walk almost anywhere in the city. This goes without saying, but I'll also really, really miss the food! Though I ate enough to satisfy my Italian food cravings for a while, I'm very sad to leave behind the brick oven pinsa romana, juicy caprese salad, homemade tonnarelli alla carbonara, and creamy pistachio gelato. More generally, I'll miss living "la dolce vita" (i.e. appreciating the little things and approaching life with a relaxed passion), which Italians take to heart. And, of course, I'll miss all of the people who made my time in Rome an absolute blast, especially my roommates.
Tumblr media
A view of the Tiber river on my last evening in Rome
I also realized that I was able to experience Rome in a way which I never would have been able to if I was just visiting as a tourist. For example, one thing which will really stick with me are the relationships I formed with some of the locals as a result of my daily routine. Whether it be the staff who used to greet me at the local gym, or the waiters at Lumiere who waited for our group of students to walk in and order our cappuccinos and croissants every morning, the repeated interactions with the locals allowed me to get a sense of what Italian people are really like and also made me feel like I truly belonged in the city. Forming these kinds of relationships was one of my goals before the program, and I'm glad I was able to achieve this to some extent. One more thing to add to the list of things I'll miss.
Is there anything I won't miss? There wasn't anything I really disliked in particular, but being able to communicate with people easily on a daily basis is one thing about home which I missed. Additionally (if I'm being picky) the weather, although clear and sunny, was an issue at times due to the extreme heat.
Tumblr media
One last look at our apartment
Overall, my time in Italy was amazing! I'm incredibly grateful that I was able to have this experience, and I would love to come back someday down the road. With that, I hope you enjoyed my account of my Italian journey, and I hope you'll visit Rome if you haven't already.
Arrivederci!

Time to say Arrivederci
I knew this time would come, but I didn't know it would be here this fast. As I write this, I'm sitting in the airport in Doha (on my way to India for a couple of weeks) and reflecting about my time in Rome. With that being said, I'll save the reflections for my last post, and use this post to give you a recap of my last week as a Roman.
The week started off with a visit to Castel Sant'Angelo, which my roommates and I hadn't gotten to tour (despite it being a five minute walk from our apartment). The "castle" itself has served many purposes over the years, including being a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family, a fortress, and a castle for popes before becoming a museum. Inside the castle were several interesting artifacts and rooms, and the top of the castle offers beautiful views of the entire city, from St. Peter's Basilica on one end to the city center on the other side.

Unfortunately, this week was busy in terms of classes, as we had our final projects and exams to finish up.
My roommates and I decided to have a "goodbye" dinner on Wednesday at a nice Italian restaurant. We settled on Tonnarello, which is located in Trastevere and is rated as one of the best restaurants in Rome! We got there early in hopes that the locals would not be eating dinner yet, but we forgot to account for the fact that it was prime dining time for all of the tourists! The restaurant was packed, but luckily we were able to get a table inside without a wait. For antipasto (appetizer), we ordered caprese salad (which was very good, although not on the level of the one we had in Capri). I ordered tonnarelli alla carbonara and a glass of the house red wine, a very fitting farewell meal. It was wonderful to have one last "roommates meal" and look back on the fun time we'd had in Rome.
Tumblr media
Our final roommates dinner at Tonnarello
This week was truly a week of "lasts." On Thursday, some friends and I got our last gelato from our favorite gelateria, called Gelateria del Monte (right next to our apartment). I went for my go-to mango and pistachio combination, and savored the best gelato in Rome one more time. For dinner, CEA had organized a farewell dinner for all of the students, professors, and staff at a local pizzeria. Meeting my friends and professors one last time before leaving was definitely bittersweet, but we had a great night and celebrated more after the dinner as well. All in all, it was a great ending to our study abroad saga.
Tumblr media

On Friday morning, two of my friends and I woke up very, very early (I seemed to be doing this a little too often) and took electric bikes to the Trevi Fountain and Aventino Hill (which I wanted to show them). It was a very nice start to my last day in Rome, and on the way home, we stopped at Lumiere (our favorite cafe) to say goodbye to the waiters who we saw everyday between classes. I spent the rest of the day packing, cleaning up, going to Silver Gym for the last time, doing some last minute shopping near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, and saying goodbye to friends. And with that, as soon as my Roman adventure had began, it was time to leave.

Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri, and More!
Ciao! This week was full of exciting experiences that I can't wait to share with you, especially our CEA trip to Campania.
Before getting to the trip, a quick detour – my roommates and I figured out (a little late, unfortunately) that we can go up onto the roof of our apartment building for a beautiful view of the Vatican City and Rome! We had dinner on the rooftop when the sun was setting, and it was a great time.
Tumblr media
The rooftop views of St. Peter's Basilica
Friday and Saturday was our CEA trip to Campania (a southern region of Italy) , which was super exciting! We took a high-speed Frecciarossa train from Rome's Termini station to Napoli around 9 a.m. on Friday morning. Once we got to Napoli, we took a bus to Pompeii. The city of Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The entire city was blanketed by several feet of volcanic ash, and thousands of people tragically lost their lives. We took a tour of many of the city's ruins which have been excavated and preserved. We saw remains of food stores, houses, and even brothels.
Tumblr media
The main forum of Pompeii (with Mt. Vesuvius in the background)
After the tour, we had a quick meal, and then took the bus to our hotel in the town of Sorrento (which is right on the coast of the Bay of Naples). We went swimming in the hotel pool and then explored Sorrento afterwards. Unfortunately, it started pouring rain as soon as we went out, but that didn't stop us from getting mango and lemon gelato from Raki (supposedly the best gelato shop in Sorrento), checking out some interesting shops, and looking out on the bay! One store in the town I would definitely recommend going to is Limonoro. Sorrento is famous for its lemons, and Limonoro has all things lemon (limoncello, cookies, candy, etc.). On top of that, we got SO many free samples that we weren't even hungry for the dinner at the hotel. The weather thankfully cleared up later in the evening, and the view of the sunset from our hotel was absolutely beautiful.
Tumblr media
Sunset in Sorrento, as seen from our hotel
The next day, two of my friends and I were determined to see the sunrise, so we (painfully) woke up a little before 5 am and walked to a viewpoint on the coast. The struggle was most definitely worth it and the view was an amazing start to the morning.
Tumblr media
Sunrise in Sorrento (ft. Mt. Vesuvius)
We then took a ferry to the island of Capri, a tiny island which is just off the coast of Sorrento. Without a doubt, Capri is one of the most beautiful places I have visited. A big group us CEA kids went on a boat tour around the island, and we were even able to jump off of the boat and swim in the sea at one point! Overall, it was an amazing experience and I would highly recommend it. Once we got onto the island, we walked up too many stairs to the top of the island (where most of the action is) and explored around the area.
Tumblr media
Picture from the boat tour around the island of Capri
We ate lunch at one of the best restaurants in the island, Ristorante Pizzeria Verginiello, and it was one of the best meals (if not the best) I've had in Italy. Being in Capri, we ordered the local caprese salad (a simple appetizer of buffalo mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, and olive oil, which tasted so good that I can't put it into words). I then had a shrimp and tomato pasta dish which the restaurant is famous for, and it was the BEST pasta I've had in Italy. If that wasn't enough, the restaurant also overlooked the water. In other words, it was a 10/10 meal, and anyone who goes to Capri needs to go to this restaurant. Afterwards, we explored the island further, and walked to the other side of the island and up more stairs to Belvedere di Punta Cannone for the best view of the island and the water. Soon it was time to head back, and after a combination of the ferry, bus, high-speed train, and metro, we were back home in Rome. This weekend was one of my favorites in Italy, and I wish we could've spent more time in Sorrento and Capri!

Hope you enjoyed my recap of the week, and looking forward to filling you in on my last (unfortunately) week in Italy!

The Vatican, Rome's Hidden Gems and a Biking Adventure
Ciao! I'm officially a little over halfway through my time in Rome, and I can't help but feel a little sad that I'll be leaving soon. I've definitely become attached to the city and the Roman way of life. This past week was a little more relaxed than last week but still very exciting: I ventured inside St. Peter's Basilica, found some beautiful new places throughout the city, and went on a nice bike ride down the Appian Way.
Though I live less than five minutes from St. Peter's Square, I hadn't gotten the chance to see the inside of St. Peter's Basilica, so some friends and I decided to go early one morning. Luckily, we were able to avoid the worst of the lines. Of course, I knew that the basilica was big, but it wasn't until I went inside that I realized how enormous and ornate it really is. My friends and I also climbed up a LOT of stairs to the top of the dome, and were rewarded with an incredible 360 degree view of Rome.
Tumblr media
The Basilica from the inside: HUGE
Tumblr media

One thing that I was determined to do in Rome was visit some of the tucked-away, "hidden gems" of the city. This week, I was able to visit two of them: Aventino Hill and Quartiere Coppedè. I woke up early one morning and rode an electric bike down the Tiber river to Aventino Hill, which is a beautiful neighborhood on top of a hill. It is known mainly for one very small but breathtaking attraction: a keyhole in a door through which you can see the dome of St. Peter's framed in a line of trees (my best attempt at a picture is below). There were also some beautiful parks and a terrace overlooking the city. At the bottom of the hill, I stopped by an enormous rose garden, which I later realized contained hundreds of types of roses which were judged in an international competition which occurs in Rome. I saw many of the vibrant, prize-winning roses. Walking around the peaceful neighborhood in the morning was one of my favorite experiences during my time Rome so far.
Tumblr media

This was the best photo I could get. If you zoom in, you can see St. Peter's Basilica beautifully framed. It's best to see it in person, so make sure you stop by when you're in Rome!
Tumblr media

My friends and I also went to Quartiere Coppedè, which is known as one of the quietest neighborhoods in Rome. We took the electric bikes (if you love biking, try using the Dott electric bikes/scooters to get around!). If you couldn't already tell, I love to just walk around and explore random places. The neighborhood is known for its unique architecture and the Fountain of the Frogs. The streets were almost empty when we went, and it was a nice, relaxing way to spend a morning.
Tumblr media
Walking down the streets of Quartiere Coppedè.
The last adventure for the week was the bike ride down the Appian Way, which was an event through CEA. The Appian way is a road connecting Rome to southern Italy, and at the time it was built (over 2000 years ago!), it was the only way to get to the southern parts from Rome. About 30 CEA students met up at Parco dell'Appia Antica (in the southeastern part of Rome), and went on a guided bike tour through the area. I love biking, so I was looking forward to this event, and it was cool to bike down the same road which had been used for centuries to connect Italy. Some parts of the road were a little bumpy to say the least (my chain came loose a couple times), but I had a great time.
Tumblr media

Hope you enjoyed this week's updates, and I can't wait to share the rest of my time in Rome with you!

Rome (vol. 2), Florence, and More Adventures
I'm officially two weeks into my study abroad experience, and just like the first week, this week seemed to go by in an instant.
I spent more time exploring Rome with my friends and saw some of the things I didn't get to see during the first week (in other words, I did a LOT of walking). A few of my roommates got up early one morning and walked up to Belvedere del Gianicolo, an elevated terrace at the top of a hill from which you can see most of Rome. Walking all the way up the hill in the intense heat was not fun, but the view was definitely worth the struggle.
Tumblr media
The view from Belvedere del Gialcolo
Another day, my friends and I wandered south towards Trastevere, a neighborhood full of old buildings, narrow cobblestone streets, and traditional restaurants. I was very excited for this because Trastevere was one of the places I wanted to visit before coming to Rome to get an authentic feel of the city. There must have been a special event going on, because the streets were MUCH more crowded than I expected. My friends and I had a nice dinner and walked along the Tiber river on the way home.
Tumblr media
A glimpse of the Trastevere neighborhood
I also finally got to see the Colosseum! Though I didn't get to go inside (planning to do that later), it was exciting to see such a famous monument. We rode the Dott electric bikes to get to the Colosseum, and riding through the busy streets of Rome was a fun experience.
Tumblr media
Took a pic in front of the Colosseum!
Saturday was an exciting day because we had our CEA day trip to Florence! We took an early morning train from the Roma Termini station, and arrived in Florence in an hour and a half. Florence is a beautiful city, and has a more historical look overall than Rome. After we arrived, our group went on a guided tour through the city, and saw several things including Michelangelo statues, Ponte Vecchio (an ancient bridge over the Arno river with shops inside of it), and the enormous Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (The Duomo). After having lunch, we climbed the cathedral's tower (up a narrow, winding staircase with too many steps to count) and saw the view of Florence from above, which was absolutely incredible! I wish we could've stayed in Florence for more time, but hopefully I'll be able to return sometime.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some pictures I took from Florence! From left to right: Florence viewed from the cathedral tower, The Duomo, Ponte Vecchio.
On a slightly less interesting note, class has been going along amidst my adventures in Italy. So far, Thermodynamics is going well, and next week my International Marketing class will start, so I'll have a little less time to do fun things.
Hope you enjoyed my recap of my second week in Rome, and I can't wait to fill you in on the week ahead!

Roma: l'iniziò (the beginning)
Ciao! I can't believe it's already been one week since I got to Rome. My first experience with Italy came before I even landed in the country. On the flight, I sat next to an Italian man who was eager to tell me about his complicated life story and the various aspects of Italian culture I could expect on my trip. I told him a little about my life, and it was very cool to bond with someone who was completely different than I was.
After arriving in Italy, I met my roommates, and we walked around the Prati neighborhood in the evening. My first impression of Rome: what an amazing city! I loved the energy of the bustling crowds, the beautiful architecture, and the sounds of the city. My first meal was pizza al taglio (rectangular slices of pizza that you can order by weight), which was delicious.
Tumblr media
My first meal in Rome: delicious pizza from Il Gianfornaio
The rest of the week consisted of walking, walking, and more walking. My new friends and I spent hours traversing the city, starting in Prati (where we live), and branching out towards the Vatican, the historical center of the city across the Tiber river, and Trastevere. So far, I have seen amazing sights like St. Peter's Basilica, Castel Sant'Angelo, the Pantheon and Trevi Fountain. I've really enjoyed walking through the narrow cobbled streets and exploring different parts of the city, particularly in the early morning or at night when there are fewer people outside.
Tumblr media

Of course, I can't write about my first week without mentioning the food! So far, I have tried a few different kinds of pizza and pasta. My favorite meal so far has been the tonarelli alla carbonara from Hostaria Ago e Lillo. I've also tried a few different gelato flavors, with my favorites being mango and caramel. Overall, the food has been absolutely amazing so far.
Tumblr media
3 flavors of gelato: caramel, custard, and mango!

I've been trying to learn Italian, though I'm still not even close to being proficient. One thing which surprised me was that nearly all of the shopkeepers, waiters, and other Italian people I have encountered have been able to speak at least a little bit of English, which has made daily life much easier.
In terms of classes, I only have Thermodynamics for the first half of the program until Marketing starts. The class is going well so far, but I'm expecting the workload to pick up in the next few days.
I hope you enjoyed my quick recap of my first week in Rome! I'm excited for the week ahead, and I'll be back soon with more updates from my second week.

Ready for Rome
Ciao! My name is Siddhant (Sid) Makkar, and I’ll be blogging about my time studying abroad in Rome. I just finished my freshman year and recently declared mechanical engineering. I’ll be taking Thermodynamics and International Marketing while abroad.
My first year of college was a blur. I still remember moving into my dorm room, my stomach churning, unsure of what experiences the year would bring. So many questions flashed through my mind. Would I make good friends? Would I succeed academically? Did I even belong at Michigan? Looking back, I can’t believe how quickly I found my place in the university community, and the things I was once so stressed about seemed silly in retrospect.
Tumblr media
Year-end photo with some of my friends
As I pack my things in preparation for the next step in my college journey, I’m gripped by the same mix of nervousness and excitement that I felt on my first day of freshman year. Many of the same questions I had at the beginning of the year are running through my mind, but I have a feeling that my experience in Rome will turn out to be amazing. The past two weeks, I’ve been spending time with my family, eating amazing food, and preparing for my trip by doing a little bit of research and trying to learn some Italian (which I had ZERO knowledge of).
Tumblr media
Packing things up!
I’ve come to realize that this trip will give me the opportunity to uncover the “true” Italy, not from the perspective of a tourist, but from someone who is being fully immersed into the day-to-day aspects of Italian culture. As an avid traveler who loves learning about new cultures, I couldn’t be more excited to be able to dive headfirst into exciting experiences in Rome. Of course, I'm excited to see the Coliseum and St. Peter's Basilica. At the same time, I'm just as eager to wander the narrow cobbled roads of Trastevere and Monti and explore the smallest, most humble, and most authentic corners of the city in my six weeks there.
Perhaps above all of the new cultural elements which I will be surrounded by in Rome, I am especially intrigued by the local people. I would love to talk with local shopkeepers and students about their daily lives and learn about their traditions and values (once I get a handle on the Italian language, of course!). How cool would it be to say that I made an Italian friend?
There’s no doubt that living in Italy won't be entirely smooth sailing. But where’s the fun without a little bit of a challenge? Sure, I'll have to cook, clean, manage my schedule, learn a new language, and get along with my roommates. At the same time, I know that I'll learn how to live independently, eat lots and lots of delicious food, and make amazing friends who will be going through this thrilling journey with me. I’m looking forward to sharing my experiences with you!
