A propósito del reconocimiento de los premios SAG a Sally Field por su trayectoria en el cine...

Las películas familiares cumplen el propósito de dar tranquilidad a los padres amantes del cine. Suponen casi una etiqueta para evitar los momentos incómodos cuando hay niños viendo. Momentos incómodos que den pie a preguntas trascendentales que comúnmente se busca evitar. No son películas infantiles, son espacios seguros para los más pequeños, pero están destinadas para los padres en compañía de sus hijos. Evitan normalmente el formato animado que tanto atrae a los más pequeños y en lugar de los llamativos colores creados por computador hay mensajes profundos detrás de estas narraciones. Este espacio destinado a un colectivo tan selecto como lo es la familia, pero que, como Rousseau afirma, es el primer ejemplo de sociedad, tiene una característica especial que tiende a ser un espejo de sus espectadores. Es decir, en la mayoría de casos la clasificación de la película es también su tema central: la familia. Un tópico tan concreto, pero a su vez con múltiples oportunidades para explorar es a lo que Chris Columbus apostó en 1993 con Robin Williams, el ícono del cine familiar, como su protagonista.

En esta concepción de familia hay una intención clara de hablar de lo no ideal. De evaluar el problema que no es creador de villanos. Esta película deja de lado los binarismos tan restrictivos del bueno y el malo, y abre la oportunidad para los escenarios realistas en donde los problemas no necesariamente tienen un personaje que actúa en contra de los protagonistas. En otras palabras, las cosas malas a veces simplemente surgen. Este largometraje de Columbus explora la figura del padre en un doble contraste con las expectativas de la sociedad sobre lo que debe ser un padre y las expectativas de una madre sobre esa labor compartida del liderazgo de la familia. En cuanto al aspecto social, se esperaría que el padre ejerciera la fuerza paternalista y autoritaria del hombre que trabaja todo el día y al llegar a casa inspira respeto, con tintes de miedo, en sus hijos quienes hacen la tarea y se reúnen a cenar y hablar del día. Mientras que, las expectativas de la madre quien, además de autoridad debe ser la comprensiva y a cargo de la casa, representan el instinto y el deseo secreto de tener un par que haga las mismas labores que ella con el mismo amor y siempre en pro de los hijos. Sin embargo, el personaje de Williams es todo lo opuesto a ambos ideales, es el hombre que trabaja en el arte como actor de doblajes y que estando en casa busca seguir siendo entretenido para sus hijos. Este padre no entra en ningún arquetipo previo, y a pesar de las dificultades que sabe que tiene a la hora de educar, quiere ser agente activo dentro de las dinámicas familiares. El personaje se enuncia desde la frustración de no poder llenar ese papel que su esposa espera y más aún de no poder encontrar la manera de conectar con sus hijos desde la figura de un padre en quien puedan confiar y ver un ejemplo.

Este juego entre las expectativas y la realidad hace que el film explique de manera implícita que existe una oportunidad para resignificar el amor desde la creación de un nuevo espacio. Entre los extremos del amor romántico entre padres y el filial hacia los hijos, se crea una nueva zona gris que habita el amor que se yuxtapone: el coincidir en el amor que le tienen a sus hijos. Ese amor que los lleva a un mismo destino. “No me gusta quien soy cuando estoy contigo”, dice el personaje de Sally Field en una de las escenas, haciendo referencia a la dinámica de ser madre que frecuentemente tiende por opacar la personalidad verdadera de la persona antes de su función como jefe de familia. Esta priorización del yo auténtico por encima de las responsabilidades no hace referencia a una actitud irresponsable de madre, por el contrario, busca educar desde quien es, y esta labor necesita del apoyo del padre. Al no contar con este aspecto, Miranda (Sally Field), toma agencia sobre su familia y hacia el final de la película resignifica el espacio del padre ya no como esposo pero sí con una nueva manera de entablar el amor. Este aspecto, por supuesto, conlleva el protagonismo de Williams pero el punto de quiebre está a cargo del personaje femenino.

La temática previamente presentada no es el centro de esta película, es la narrativa que se enuncia a través del padre que se disfraza para estar con sus hijos. La razón de este disfraz surge a raíz del juicio de divorcio en el que debido a que el padre no tiene un trabajo, ni un lugar estable en el que vivir, sus visitas se restringen al fin de semana. Motivado por el amor a sus hijos Daniel (Robin Williams) se disfraza de una mujer mayor para cuidar a sus hijos como empleada mientras que Miranda trabaja. El personaje decide tomar esta alternativa del travetismo debido a que su hermano se dedica a hacer estos maquillajes, e incluso se disfraza de mujer en ocasiones. Bajo el concepto del disfraz de mujer en el que el hombre deja su lado masculino momentáneamente para sentirse como una mujer, Daniel explora este espacio como una herramienta no solo para entrar en contacto con sus hijos sino para aprender de las expectativas de su ex esposa para que se haga responsable de sí mismo y en consecuencia de sus hijos. Esta sensibilidad adquirida le resulta útil para un proyecto televisivo, lo cual deja entrever que esta conexión con lo femenino permanece de manera valiosa en la idea de familia que tiene el personaje.

Este análisis de familia tiene como consecuencia una nueva resignificación ahora acerca de los finales felices. Hay una nueva definición de felicidad que surge de los eventos desafortunados como un divorcio. A un nivel menos trascendental, el mensaje es el que Hellen Mirren recita en la película de David Frankel “solo asegúrate de ver la belleza inesperada”. Los hijos, si bien se enfrentan a construir dos espacios diferentes bajo la misma noción de hogar, se encuentran ahora ante dos espacios construidos y seguros cuando antes solo tenían uno que estaba siempre en caos. Se alejan de las peleas maritales y se enfrentan a la admiración entre padres y el sentimiento de importancia al ser ellos la razón de ese amor resignificado entre sus líderes familiares.

En adición a este gran tema de la familia, hay una metalectura tácita sobre el consumo de televisión en la audiencia infantil. En la labor de actor del personaje de Robin Williams se presenta una crítica hacia lo vacío y carente de significado en los contenidos audiovisuales que se hacen dirigidos a niños y niñas. Daniel se rehúsa a darle voz a un personaje animado que fuma en un sentido divertido, ya que esto envía un mensaje erróneo. Pero tampoco disfruta o comparte el formato netamente educativo que imparten otro tipo de programas. Así, y como sucede con este film, el programa que protagoniza Daniel, educa a través de la risa y el sentido de familiaridad.

Sobre el título: El nombre del personaje de Daniel es un guiño divertido a la creatividad y la relevancia de este espacio imaginado. Es decir, la señora Doubtfire no tiene una persona a quien vincularse, se adjunta a una actitud de una persona y a la multiplicidad de oportunidades que existen en un solo ser humano mediante el mecanismo del arte y motivado por el amor.

Sobre el poster: En este póster a modo de retrato de familia el padre está en el centro de la fotografía pero disfrazado de la señora Doubtfire. Esto hace alusión a la conformación del rol que llena este espacio paternal a partir del sentido femenino que aprende con el personaje de la señora Doubtfire Además, los hijos son el centro de la imagen y ya no hay una postura de la relación marital de padres sino precisamente de este amor resignificado.

Movie Review!

Today's movie: Requiem for a Dream (2000)

This movie blew me away.. I loved the way it was filmed and edited. I loved all the cuts, they really worked into making the viewer feel overwhelmed. I liked how the mom's mental illness and hallucinations were presented. I liked how the drug use, highs and the uncomfortable euphorias were shown. I loved the way all the characters just spiraled into insanity, even if they were exaggerated it shows that at the end of the day drugs can have terrible outcomes onto people's lives. Requiem for a dream is in my top 5 movies for sure.

When one hears/reads the title they feel the movie is something about being stuck on something…and they are not wrong. For the unknowing “khajoor” is date and “atke” is stuck, literally meaning stuck on date tree…

The movie is a sarcastic comedy about some self centered siblings and their families who are stuck in and trying desperately to get out of a catch 22 situation.

It starts with a phone call to a family, where the caller; one of the kinsmen, informs the called one that there is an emergency. It is this call that leads to situations one after the other that results in hilarity laced with mockery.

What I liked about the movie is the presentation..It is as authentic and as relatable as it could be…Ofcourse being a bollywood movie..it is but expected that the movie would be just a little over the top and would just a little overdo it..But, “just a little”.

Having said that when one thinks about it people do have some kith & kin who do behave like the ones in the movie.

The sarcasm in the movie is not bitter and the comic element is not dark, despite the movie dealing with death and related issues. This is one more thing I like about this movie. A delicate subject has been handled with finesse.

Obviously, as I said earlier, the movie being a bollywood one…more often than not, there are morals in the story however they are not the preachy teachy kind and brooding kind, they are subtle and just roll over you smoothly.

All in all a delightful satire and some first rate acting so keep laughing all the way…

Movie Review!

Today's movie: 10 things I hate about you (1999)

Rating: 10/10

Let me just start off by saying I loved everyone's performance in this movie. From Keith ledger to Joseph Gordon. Awesome cast! The soundtrack was amazing, the story was pretty interesting and over the top considering it's a teen flick I think they did a great job presenting what it's like and what it feels like to be a teenager. I loved how the story starts off being about Cameron and Bianca but as the story unfolds it becomes more about Patrick and Kat which by the way have great chemistry. I enjoyed watching Bianca develop as a character and ended up liking her alot more after the events in the movie. This movie made me very happy and made me cry I loved every second of it. And I of course LOVED the way letters to cleo was in it as they're one of my favorite bands ever!
