Finally catching up on the precure movies. Starting with the Star Twinkle movie: wish upon a song of stars.

Ok, so I finally got around to watching the Star Twinkle Precure Movie, Wish Upon a Song of Stars and, first things first, THAT WAS SUPER EMOTIONAL AND I’M STILL CRYING, OK ?!

But also, the Hikaru x Lala in this thing is BIG. Like, more text than subtext at this point.

They spend half the movie raising a CHILD together goddamnit !

And that child ? At the end of the movie ? When it grows up and takes a human-like form to say goodbye to its mothers ? Do you know what it looks like ?!

Which, let’s admit it, is just a mix of THESE TWO

Lala’s hair, Hikaru’s twintails, the face is the fucking same too but it’s always the same in these animes so let’s not dwell on it too much.

They spend half the movie raising the kid, developing their parenting skills, especially Lala, then the other half they fight to protect the kid and bring it back on the right path, singing a song about love in the middle of this where they join hands at the part that specifically says the word “love”-

THE SHIPPING IS FUCKING HARD IN THIS MOVIE, OK ?!

I used to believe that Elena and Madoka-

(yeah, these two disasters who almost kissed for a manga right there)

(where the FUCK is your hand, Elena ?! WHERE THE FUCK ?!)

-would be the gayest pair in the show and honestly, with all their sun and moon symbolism and how they’re always there for each other and when one has something on her mind the other is the first/only one to notice, they did go pretty hard on the gay.

But Hikaru and Lala ?

With their whole Tanabata theme going on ? (Lala is born on Tanabata, Hikaru’s parents are literally Orihime and Hiko-boshi in that they only see each other one day each year, Lala’s last name is Hagoromo which is apparently a garment that Orihime weaves on the Milky way, Milky also being Lala’s Precure name, anyway, I think you get the idea)

And now with their adopted child that they want to find again someday ? (after they’re reunited)

The shipping is hard. And I know now why we weren’t given the joy of seeing them properly reuniting at the end of the finale. Because they would have KISSED and promised each other ETERNAL LOVE and it would have been TOO GAY (and caused me to die, too, as a side note)

Favorite Space Songs

Just wanted to share with y’all my favorite kind of songs that either talk about the world beyond our planet or songs that have some (or one) very nice spacey lyric(s). The whole list would be longer so I’m only sticking with songs that have some kind of space object in the title. Been watching Asteroid in Love and Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun and it’s a little nostalgic to watch/learn about characters being so passionate about space. Though I don’t know why I feel nostalgic, my whole room has glow-in-the-dark stars and I have lots of books about stars!

Star Twinkle movie thoughts

I finally got around to watching the Star Twinkle Precure movie, “Wish Upon a Song of Stars”, and it gave me some thoughts, and by god I’m going to share them. This is not at all a full review, I’ll get to that on the main blog eventually, maybe. As you can see I’m not exactly making breakneck speed here.

Anyway. STPC movie.

It’s good! I liked the character development in it and I was actually surprised at how long it took for the conflict to be set up, usually they have an early fight, the main plot happens, and they transform again within about 20 minutes, but here the film begins with their battle and then they were pushing the half hour mark before they get ready to fight again. The villains were not very exciting but that’s fine, they’re more of a distraction, not the primary antagonists. The conflict is between Hikaru and Lala and their new friend Yuma, which I enjoy as something different. The song that recurs throughout the film is nice but not particularly memorable. The advertising may have overhyped the Horoscope transformations for me a bit, they didn’t end up doing much and some were barely seen.

The main problem with this film is one that the entire season had: it seems like the writers only want to write about the duo of Hikaru and Lala, while Madoka, Elena, and Yuni are written out for about half the movie (think of how Hikari got shafted in the first Max Heart movie, but this time there’s not even the excuse of a hasty character addition). Star Twinkle has never felt like a team where each member is equally important, it’s always the Hikaru and Lala show and the others are just around for the merchandise and to move the plot along. Maybe there was a disconnect between Bandai and Toei’s desires.

The final song and dance sequence (not the ending theme) winds up being a little visually confusing because it includes Cure Soleil, Selene, and Cosmo, who are shown to be somewhere else away from the action before and after this sequence. The CG in it is incredible, almost seamless with the 2D animation, and it’s only going to get better from here.

The space police dog character who was introduced in a tie-in episode of the series also feels a bit useless here. She’s just around for some exposition.

I was impressed by the Miracle Light handling though! Normally they go all out begging kids for help and to use the lights, even breaking the fourth wall. Here, though, they only ask once and it’s fairly restrained by this franchise’s standards. Keep that energy!

Oh also a good chunk of the movie takes place in Okinawa, showing off the island’s architecture and major tourist attractions. I suspect that a tourism board was a sponsor.

So yeah those are my thoughts, decent movie that could have been improved by balancing the characters out better. Hopefully one day Precure Daily will be advanced enough that I get to share more about it.

I know this is an anime movie but. This movie destroyed me in so many ways I can’t even begin to describe. The entire twinkle stars musical number always makes me cry. This is legit the one movie I always watch that just sticks with me forever it always makes me feel things.

Fantastic music. Interesting metaphors.

I became a hardcore Birdboy defender when my parents didn't like it because it "didn't make sense". Why does the mousegirl have a human dad who wears a mouse costume? Idk mom, why do you think? It's a wonderful Spanish movie (and with a much cooler original title, too), stuffed to the brim with poignant themes (Addiction. Environmental collapse. Christian fundamentalism. Coming of age in a dying world. Intrusive thoughts. Police misconduct and the war and drugs. The cycle of violence. Socioeconomic reasons for crime.) all presented in beautiful hand-drawn animation with talking animals. If you look up trailers to decide, make sure to watch both the original and US release trailers, each hits a different vibe (and the dubbed trailer has my favorite music from the movie).
