Random tips for writing a martial artist!
The ruleset for the competitive form of their style (ie Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Wrestling, etc...) will inform how that character approaches fighting. For example, Karate where points are awarded based on how many hits you land means that fighter might prioritize keeping someone at a distance, whereas in Knockdown Karate where victory is achieved through a KO that fighter may prioritize trying to pummel someone with close range attacks
A mixed martial artist will often have a "base" style. This is usually their first style and then they build around it by taking techniques from other styles in hopes of creating their own effective blend. Common base styles in MMA include Boxing, Wrestling, Brazilian Jiujitsu, and Muay Thai. In the last decade there's also been a wave of Karate practitioners joining MMA as well.
Related to the first two points, no two styles are fully comparable and no style is better than another. However, styles that pressure test their practitioners with a healthy dose of sparring and competitions will generally produce more competent fighters. After all, you don't get good at what you don't practice! So if you're writing a fight, the fighter with a more pressure tested background will probably come out on top more often than not.
Disabled martial artists exist, and also compete in tournaments. For example, in Paralympic Judo, the only difference is the fighters start off grabbing each other's uniform and the referee saying certain commands outloud so the fighters know to return to the center or avoid the edge of the arena.
In real life, fights between two experienced fighters are less like in movies where two characters are constantly rushing each other with few pauses. Generally, two fighters will try to feel each other out, making on the fly risk assessments with periodic high intensity exchanges. This is generally known as "explosiveness" in martial arts. Those on the higher end of explosiveness tend to resemble all out brawls more but the characters are still doing risk assessment with periodic lulls in the action. That said, this is a stylistic choice for the author, so you don't really need to consider this one if you're more interested in Rule of Cool.
A blackbelt in Japan typically does not mean the same thing it means in the West. In Japan, the first degree blackbelt is usually just a sign that you are now competent (and thus tourney-ready). It is not uncommon for a Japanese martial artist to get their shodan (first degree blackbelt) at an early age based on how many training hours they clock. Furthermore, most Japanese martial arts only have white and black belts. The colored grading system is largely a western invention to serve as a motivational tool.
Size matters. You might hear a lot about how size doesn't matter but that's just not true. A larger person has an advantage that can't be ignored. However, there are ways around this and a smaller fighter can still win. Typically, this requires the smaller fighter to keep larger foes in mind when they're training. It also requires them to strategize around their larger opponent's advantage. This applies specifically to two trained fighters. A smaller well trained person is still much more likely to defeat a larger, untrained enemy.
I want to stress these aren't rules or a do's and don't list, it's just tips for writing martial artists. You can also just disregard everything here because you're free to go hog wild. That said, I hope this can be useful to people wanting to write fights.

"I wish I could write 'weird sh*t' as a diagnosis"
I love my General Practitioner. My last one retired, and it took me over a year on a wait list to get into this one a girlfriend recommended, but it was so worth it.
Today I received my formal Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome diagnosis. Not vascular, in my case, but does cause me quite a bit of daily pain and I'll be off to PT shortly.
But what is often my least favorite part of visiting the doctor became a revelation today—the weigh-in.
TW: miscarriage, bleeding, pregnancy
The year was 2020. It was late February and I was getting ready for what would become my last Tae Kwon Do belt testing before the Pandemic shut the world down. I didn't love my weight, but I felt strong.
See, after I had my twins, I went back to pre-pregnancy weight in 17 days. Yup. 17 days. And for a 30-year-old, I was shocked and pleasantly surprised!
But after my daughter, three years later, I had 20 extra pounds that I couldn't shake. This was partly due to a rough pregnancy (almost lost her at 12 weeks, placenta previa, couldn't work out) and then complications after her birth (trapped placenta, bled for 5 months, hemorrhaged, etc).
I started Tae Kwon Do in 2019 mostly because I'd been told my whole life that I couldn't do it. I wanted to prove that person wrong, but also show myself that I was capable. I had to work hard, but I wasn't bad. That last belt test, I earned my blue-stripe (mid-level belt).
And I was strong. I didn't lose a single pound doing Tae Kwon Do, but I turned it into strength. Into muscle.
It was when I stopped weighing myself. I realized that the number on the scale didn't reflect the body I had.
But, when the world shut down, everything shifted for all of us. I was sick for 10 months of 2020. I lost 40% of my income. I had to balance working from home with homeschooling three children, and I barely ate.
Now, I am not one of those people who loses weight when they don't eat. My body goes into preservation mode, and it all goes to my stomach, arms, butt, and hips.
I gained 20 pounds, and since 2020, I haven't been able to get them off.
Six months ago, I went for a weigh-in as part of my physical. I tried to ignore the number, but I knew it well. No changes. Today, I went in for a follow-up—and 18 of those 20 pounds are gone.
I knew I felt different. I felt stronger. I felt healthier. My clothes felt different. But I don't get on scales anymore, so I didn't realize the difference of having the stress gone.
You see, 5 months ago, our lives changed. After a year of trying to keep up with medical debt by taking every extra job I could, working all hours and not sleeping, I finally put up a GoFundMe in shame and desperation.
In 48 hours it raised $8,000 and we erased all but two medical payment plans—one that is now down to $300, and the other has a few thousand to go for my braces.
I went back to working normal hours. I started being able to afford groceries again for me and not just for the kids. Everything shifted in a beautiful way.
I haven't gotten into a workout routine, yet, but I started walking several times a week for Mental Health Walks.
Life changed for us radically because a bunch of people (some of whom I've only met online) rallied around us in our darkest hour.
And for the first time in years, I am getting back to a healthier me. I cannot express my gratitude. There aren't enough words.
It's a reminder that sometimes we can't do it alone. We need our community. We need people who love us. And I am humbled and honored by the love showered on me.
And you. Yes, you! If you don't feel loved today, I hope you know that I love you. I value you. I am proud of you. You are beautiful. And you are loved.

Omori Martial Artist’s AU
An AU where the Omori Characters are Martial Arts Practitioners.
Featuring a small summary on the style they use.
Sunny: Bak Mei
Info: White Eyebrow Kung fu (Bak Mei) is a close quarter method of Chinese boxing. Known for its explosive power and effective techniques, It is one of the treasured kung fu systems of Southern China. Open hand whipping strikes for Bak Mei consist of hammer fists, finger jabs, palm strikes and elbow strikes. Kicks are mostly to the waist or below, and often target the knees, groin or shin, though striking with the hands is preferred over kicking. Bak Mei practitioners seldom use the regular fist, preferring to use the leopard fist or the phoenix- eye fist to concentrate power in a small area to the body’s most vulnerable points such as the throat, temple or eyes.
Mari: Capoeira
Info: Capoeira is a fast and versatile martial art that combines elements of martial arts, dance, acrobatics, music and spirituality. It is historically focused on fighting outnumbered or in technological disadvantage. The style emphasizes using the lower body to kick, sweep and take down their aggressors, using the upper body to assist those movements and occasionally attack as well. It features a series of complex positions and body postures that are meant to get chained in an uninterrupted flow, to strike, dodge and move without breaking motion, conferring the style with a characteristic unpredictability and versatility.
Kel: Taekwondo
Info: Taekwondo is a Korean form of martial arts characterized by punching and kicking techniques, with emphasis on head-height kicks, spinning jump kicks, and fast kicking techniques. The literal translation for tae kwon do is "kicking", "punching", and "the art or way of". They are a kind of martial arts in which one attacks or defends with hands and feet anytime or anywhere, with occasional use of weapons. The physical training undertaken in Taekwondo is purposeful and fosters strength of mind through mental armament.
Hero: Jeet Kune Do
Info: A hybrid martial arts system and life philosophy founded by martial artist Bruce Lee with direct, non classical and straightforward movements. Due to the way his style works they believe in minimal movement with maximum effect and extreme speed. The system works on the use of different 'tools' for different situations. These situations are broken down into ranges (Kicking, Punching, Trapping and Grappling), with techniques flowing smoothly between them. It is referred to as a "style without style". Unlike more traditional martial arts, Jeet Kune Do is not fixed or patterned, and is a philosophy with guiding thoughts. It was named for the concept of interception, or attacking your opponent while he is about to attack.
Aubrey: Muay Thai
Info: Muay Thai, sometimes referred to as Thai boxing, is a combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This discipline is known as the "art of eight limbs", as it is characterised by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins. The style uses the human body to mimic the weapons and combat of centuries gone by. The fist takes the place of the sword and daggers, and the elbow emulates the crushing mace. The feet and knees take the place of the axe and staff. The shins and forearms are specially trained and hardened to play the role of armor and shield and are used to block blows. In practice, the style uses a combination of punches, elbow strikes, kicks and knee strikes, to create one of the most exhilarating and bloody combat styles today.
Basil: Drunken Boxing
Info: Also known as Drunken Fist, is a general name for all styles of Chinese martial arts that imitate the movements of a drunk person. Despite its name, the style does not require its user to consume alcohol. Many aspects of drunken boxing are specialized towards deception: continuous bobbing and weaving and slipping, feigning instability and lack of focus, attacking from unusual angles and seemingly weak positions, sudden changes of momentum, compounding multiple attacks with the same limb, use of blind-spots and visual distractions, changing game plans in mid-fight and employing concealed or improvised weapons. Like many styles of kung fu, drunken boxing employs a wide variety of attacks, including striking, chin na and wrestling, with trapping range fighting as a default skill.

It is known by its quick and complex moves, using mainly power, speed, and leverage for a wide variety of kicks, spins, and highly mobile techniques; at heart is the ginga (similar to native Brazilian dance until today), the back-and-forth, foot-to-foot movement that serves as the starting point for such leverage.
In the characteristics of Taekwondo, almost all kicks can be executed, such as jump kicks, spin kicks, jump spin kicks, or multi-rotational spin kicks, and can also be performed by either the front or rear leg in a given stance. Hand strikes are performed at a close distance in a number of ways: from standing, jumping, spinning, and rushing forward. Various surfaces of the hand may be engaged as the striking surface depending on which area of the opponent's body is being targeted.
Hero: Jeet Kune Do
Info: Jeet Kune Do (截拳道; "Way of the Intercepting Fist"), often abbreviated as JKD, is a hybrid martial art system and philosophy of life founded by the martial artist Bruce Lee. He often referred to it as "the art of expressing the human body" in his writings and in interviews. Through his studies Lee came to believe that styles had become too rigid and unrealistic, that real combat was spontaneous, and that a martial artist cannot predict it, only react to it. Lee stated that his martial concept does not add more and more things on top of each other to form a system, but rather selects the best thereof. The metaphor Lee borrowed from Chan Buddhism was of constantly filling a cup with water, and then emptying it, used for describing Lee's philosophy of "casting off what is unessential". The final result was what he considered to be the bare combat essentials: Jeet Kune Do. Every situation, in fighting or in everyday life, is varied. To obtain victory, therefore, it is essential not to be rigid, but to be fluid and able to adapt to any situation. Lee compared it to being like water: "Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes a cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot and it becomes the teapot. That water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend". Lee’s theory behind this was that one must be able to function in any scenario one is thrown into and should react accordingly: one should know when to speed up or slow down, when to expand and when to contract, and when to remain flowing and when to crash. It is the awareness that both life and fighting can be shapeless and ever changing that allows one to be able to adapt to those changes instantaneously and bring forth the appropriate solution. Jeet Kune Do teaches that the best defense is a strong offense, hence the principle of an "intercepting fist". For someone to attack another hand-to-hand, the attacker must approach the target. This provides an opportunity for the attacked person to "intercept" the attacking movement. "To reach me, you must move to me. Your attack offers me an opportunity to intercept you": this means intercepting an opponent's attack with an attack of one's own instead of simply blocking it. When confronting an incoming attack, the attack is parried or deflected, and a counterattack is delivered at the same time. This is more effective than blocking and counter attacking in sequence. Jeet Kune Do seeks to waste no time or movement, teaching that the simplest things work best. Economy of motion is the principle by which Jeet Kune Do practitioners achieve: efficiency (an attack which reaches its target in the least amount of time, with maximum force), directness (doing what comes naturally in a disciplined way), and simplicity (thinking in an uncomplicated manner, without ornamentation). This is meant to help a practitioner conserve both energy and time, two crucial components in a physical confrontation.
Aubrey: Muay Thai
Info: Muay Thai, sometimes referred to as Thai boxing, is a combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This discipline is known as the "art of eight limbs", as it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins. The style uses the human body to mimic the weapons and combat of centuries gone by. The fist takes the place of the sword and daggers, and the elbow emulates the crushing mace. The feet and knees take the place of the ax and staff. The shins and forearms are specially trained and hardened to play the role of armor and shield and are used to block blows. In practice, the style uses a combination of punches, elbow strikes, kicks and knee strikes, to create one of the most exhilarating and bloody combat styles today. The elbow in particular is an incredibly deadly tool included in the fighter's arsenal and can be thrown from many directions. Acting metaphorically similar to that of a knife, a swift and precise elbow strike can cause great damage, including cuts to an opponent and will usually result in a knockout. A known tactic is to deliberately cut the opponent's brow, resulting in the blood from the wound getting into their eyes and obscuring their vision.
Basil: Zui Quan
Info: Also known as Drunken Fist, is a general name for all styles of Chinese martial arts that imitate the movements of a drunk person. Despite its name, the style does not require its user to consume alcohol nor be intoxicated. Like many styles of kung fu, Zui Quan employs a wide variety of attacks, including striking, chin na and wrestling, with trapping range fighting as a default skill. Zui Quan techniques are highly acrobatic, and require a great degree of skill, balance and coordination. The postures are created by momentum and weight of the body, and imitation is generally through staggering and certain types of fluidity in the movements. It is considered to be among the most difficult wushu styles to learn due to the need for powerful joints and fingers. To excel, one must be relaxed and flow with ease from one technique to another. Swaying, drinking, and falling are used to throw off opponents. When the opponent thinks the drunken boxer is vulnerable, he is usually well balanced and ready to strike. When swigging a wine cup, the practitioner is really practicing grabbing and striking techniques. The waist movements trick opponents into attacking, sometimes even falling over. Falls can be used to avoid attacks but also to pin attackers to the ground while vital points are targeted.

As was before with the planes, I'm not too knowledgeable about martial art styles, but I'm very grateful and intrigued by the descriptions you gave on each pick! The only two things I would change/wonder about is Mari having a martial art style that relys mostly on lower body (AKA her weakest part of the body) and how Jeet Kune Do seems more like Kel's style rather than Hero's. I won't say more than that 'cause you do seem to know more than me about it, John!

Oooooooooo this is such a cool ask thank you for it!!!
I don't know anything about martial arts myself, aside from the minescule taekwondo I did in middle school and which i barely remember, but from the descriptions you gave these seem like really fitting styles for them to use.
Mari's style fits her very well I feel. The complex dance and music related style seems like something she'd gravitate towards. I also like how it pairs well with Hero's style aswell, since they both empathize defense and retaliation (since Capoeira is focused on fighting while outnumbered and Jeet Kune Do is focused on the concept of interception) rather then instigation.
Basil's style caught me off guard and, is a funny choice out of context, but I can see it working for his character. His nervousness and uncertainty used as an advantage rather then a weakness. [I'm playing through the game with a friend who follows me on this tumblr and is going in blind so I can't discuss how else it fits but I do catch that aswell lmao]
All of these are fantastic choices for each character and the explanations are greatly appreciated.

Bonus:
Hikko: Krav Maga
Info: Krav Maga is an eclectic martial arts style from Israel focused on winning in “real life” combat situations. It uses strikes, kicks, grappling and many other self-defense techniques, as it also specializes in disarming opponents. Krav Maga was developed to finish a fight as quickly as possible and therefore all attacks are aimed at the most vulnerable parts of the body (i.e. groin, eyes, etc.). This martial art is utilized by the Israeli Defense Forces. A number of the elite Israeli military units also use the martial arts system known as KAPAP. Krav Maga is a non-sport form of martial arts, which means it doesn’t care for rules and opponents' well-being. Due to its effectiveness, it is taught to civilians, military, law enforcement, and security agencies around the world.

This is really interesting! I've never read up on different martial art techniques, so this definitely caught my eye
