Seeing characters in romance stories just jetting between countries at a moment's notice with no thought for visa; seeing airports as sites of triumphant climaxes and romantic denouements instead of places of fear and danger where a sword hangs above your head— it all breaks off little pieces of my heart. They're constant reminders that my people will never be human enough in the colonial world order to be allowed to move freely around it. No matter what your race, those non-refugees living in the Global North will never understand what it's like to be part of a global ghetto where your passport is nothing but a trembling supplication and humiliation.

Korean Vox HCs

TW: Mention of sexual assault(not anything related to the characters, only related to Korean history & Japanese occupation)

Korean name Nam Hyeon Chul(남현철)- I chose this because Hyeon(현) means "smart" and Cheol(철) means "iron/metal", and the last name Nam(남) because it fits well with the name. "Smart metal".. Get the pun?

Forced Japanese name being Minami(Nam) Kentetsu(Hyeonchul)- He absolutely hates being called this.

Normally speaking fluent English but slipping up once in a while(e.g. Quietly saying '..잘생겼다' instead of 'handsome' when first seeing Alastor, occasionally swearing in Korean instead of English, etc.)

Born in 1931 in Korea, grew up under the Japanese government until the independence(1945). He was frequently bullied by the Japanese children and though he had an aptitude for technology, he was ignored and ridiculed because he was Korean.

His mother died after his brother was born and his father got arrested for disobeying the authorities. They're both in Heaven.

He had four younger siblings- three sisters and one brother- and always dutifully cared for them. Two of his sisters got captured by the 위안부(An association Japan made to "relieve" their soldiers, they kidnapped young women and got r*ped by them) and only one of them came back. He absolutely loathes Japan even more for this. All of his siblings are in Heaven.

He is fluent in Japanese as well as Korean but highly dislikes speaking it.

He learned English in school but became fluent after falling in Hell.

As the Korean War broke out(1950), Vox, resenting it deeply, immigrated to Japan. With his skills, he worked as an electrician and specialized and was captivated by TVs. One day, one of his clients, completely unaware of his nationality, bragged about how "back in the day" used to be associated with the 위안부(the place his sisters got dragged to). Out of rage, he killed him by electrocuting him and was surprised by how amazing it felt.

From that day, he started to murder Japanese elders he knew were affiliated with abuse towards Koreans. This got him involved in shady businesses.

A malfunctioning TV killed him when he was 28.

He listened to some of Alastor's recordings before he died, learning some English with it. He thought the timbre of his voice was very nice.

He cooks. Since both Velvette and Valentino are unable to function like a normal demon he cooks breakfast, lunch, and dinner for them. He used to secretly gift food for Alastor as well- though he didn't say so, Alastor actually appreciated those.

He only started dating Valentino because of similarities with Alastor- did not work out well but he hides his troubles deep down.

He celebrates seolnal and chuseok by himself;)

Some thoughts on Kim "Horangi" Hong-jin (and why he is my favorite Kortac operator)

König/Horangi shippers DNI.

Here's some thoughts and a bit of analysis on South Korean operator Horangi with some simpery sprinkled in from a Korean-American perspective:

There's a lot of small details in his uniform that tells some things about his character.

The circled area includes an uncomplete heart (likely a taegeuk [circle part of the South Korean flag] heart and also his own callsign "Horangi" written in Hangul. This in translation reads as "tiger" which is also the meaning of his callsign.

And tbh, it's pretty cute that he wrote his callsign on his own vest right above a little drawn heart.

On the back of his vest are tally marks (which likely indicate kills or the amount of gambling debts he owes) and a colored taegeuk heart, which is the circle part of the South Korean flag (not to be confused with pepsi's logo, which is also amusing).

What's interesting about this detail of the taegeuk heart on his uniform is that it shows a pretty clear sense of patriotism in his character despite him being a former gambler turned mercenary.

Another interesting little detail is that Horangi keeps pens on his vest and those pens are the same colors of his writing and drawings on his vest (the hearts and Hangul).

His uniform has all these little details which helps show the personality of his character.

2. His callsign, "Horangi"

There's a lot of thoughts I have about his callsign. As I said earlier, his callsign means "Tiger" in Korean. The tiger is the national animal of South Korea (which probably also says something about Horangi's patriotism). And well...it's almost like if an American operator took up the callsign "Eagle". Although, in a Korean context, it's a bit cheesy in an amusing and endearing way in my opinion haha.

Furthermore, "Horangi" as a word doesn't sound very fierce in Korean normally. It actually kinda sounds a bit cutesy when said in Korean correctly. So while having a callsign meaning "tiger" probably sounds badass, it isn't quite as badass in Korean.

3. Horangi's bio and backstory

The intro paragraph in his operator bio is just so hilarious to me. It literally starts off with all this dramatic and edgy speculation about why Horangi is wearing his mask only to reveal uneventfully that Horangi really is just a dogshit gambler and hiding from his creditors.

No wonder the man's a merc despite his patriotism... He has to make the big bucks in the mercenary business to work on paying off debts while the creditors are trying to track him down.

His backstory actually stands out to me a lot in how unexpected and amusing it is. There's no edgy drama, k pop references, or any typical stereotypes about Koreans. It's just a man who's a dogshit gambler turned mercenary. Sadly, it's kinda rare to see Korean characters in Western media being depicted without any stereotypes or k-pop references.

Anyways, in other words, I'm part of the Horangi Simpery club! I'll be posting more Horangi content over time.

Korean history inspired Tiefling designs.

Bottom right was the original idea, a Joseon era Tiefling artificer alchemist named Peril, using a mix of herbal medicine and mean yet motivational commentary to keep everyone (mostly herself) safe.

Then, I wanted to try and draw versions for other periods of Korean history and other social classes, so we’ve got a Goryeo-inspired hairstyle on the top left, and a Joseon noblewoman on the top right.

I love getting hyper-focused on random shit in my free time, I guess. Currently painting the Goryeo version in acrylics! Patreon | Commissions | IG
