I think people need to realize that it was sheer luck that they have been born in developed countries with decent living conditions, away from the threat of war or civil conflicts. It is by pure coincidence at times that you end up being a citizen of a developed country, rather than one with an impoverished population experiencing man-made (because it is man-made in this day and age) famine, diseases that have been long eradicated or war (be it a civil conflict or due to selfish interests of developed nations who profit from these, at the cost of civilian lives). You could have been born into these conditions.

The point is: NO ONE should ever be made to witness the horrors of war, famine, poverty, disease or any other trauma inducing situation in which they have no free will or say about its outcome.

Seeing characters in romance stories just jetting between countries at a moment's notice with no thought for visa; seeing airports as sites of triumphant climaxes and romantic denouements instead of places of fear and danger where a sword hangs above your head— it all breaks off little pieces of my heart. I’m thinking about The Hunger Games. It … it somehow manages to represent the world we live in and more specifically the Global North - Global South power dynamics and oppression systems in a truthful and insightful way that no other media does, and yet it completely mischaracterizes the power dynamics within the Global South and the class and race hierarchies that characterize the internal power structures in the Global South. The prequel also horrifically mischaracterizes immigration, the immigrant experience, and what immigrants are like. To the point where that book literally psychologically triggered me and I had to stop reading it because it was such terrible representation, dear gods.

So like, the thing is, there is not and never has been and never will be solidarity between the poor and the comfortable in the Global South. Yes, the North oppresses the South and the North exploits and profits from and metaphorically and often literally enslaves the South. But the well-off in the South do all of these things too. And from what I’ve seen and experienced in my personal life and what I’ve heard from other people who grew up in or live in the South, the well-off Southerners are probably worse than the North when it comes to oppressing and exploiting and profiting off of the poor people of the South. You can say that America is the Big Bad and everything bad happens because of it. But the fact of the matter is that without comfortable Southerners doing all the direct things required to keep the poor in line, the international and intranational hierarchies of the world would fall apart. Global Southern police officers and military members and government and businesspeople and employers and bosses and moneyed people are directly the reason the poor people in the Global South are being exploited, even if the North benefits from this all a whole lot too.

And … what the hell was the mountain scene in District Two? Those guys were peacekeepers. They were COPS. The poor people of the Global South don’t need to and should not feel any sense of solidarity with the COPS that keep them held down. And I’m not only saying this because I’m anti cop but because the people in that mountain benefitted from harming and oppressing the poor people, they benefitted from keeping the poor people from gaining power, and they benefitted from the system that kept the poor people poor. Those peacekeepers and peacekeeper-adjacent were not oppressed in any way, despite being from the Districts (aka Global South). They were the oppressors. You could argue that actually they were oppressed because their kids could be reaped. But two kids get reaped a year and there’s thousands of kids in the district. But even ignoring that fact, the point is that the mountain scene was meant to parallel real-world dynamics. And no real world cops are oppressed. Even ones in the Global South, or perhaps especially them to be honest.

And we need to talk about TBOSAS and the way it paints immigrants. Immigrants are not worse than non-immigrants, but they’re not better either. They are not would-be rebels full of empathy and compassion for the poor people they left behind. They are not brave heroes who will die for the Global South. I’m saying this from experience, I have moved in immigrant circles all my life. Immigrants are no better than anyone else in the Global North, they are only tied to their homelands in the most superficial and shallow ways possible, and they ally and align themselves with the Global North and against the Global South most of the time, just like most Global Northerners do. They’ll wear traditional clothes but those clothes will be made out of fabric the cost of which could feed a whole family back home for a month. Yes, there are immigrants who are the brave hero-martyr with undying loyalty that the book showcases. But those cases are really rare, they are really more of an anomaly than anything else. And I’m not saying this to say that immigrants are bad. I’m saying this to say that immigrants are far more part of and loyal to their adoptive countries, and cannot be expected to act differently from non-immigrants in any way that substantially matters.

I also think that Primrose is an example of all that is wrong with Collins’ understanding of the South. Prim looks like and can be said to symbolize the more affluent parts of the district. She resembles her mother who is from the more wealthy part of town while Katniss represents her father who is from the Seam. Now the moderate wealth of the Town does not hold a candle to the extravagance and excess of rich parts of the South. I’ve been there, I’ve seen it, there are penthouse vacation homes blocks away from shantytowns. Literally. But still, the Town in District Twelve represents what Collins thinks is the wealthy part of the South. (And in my opinion the Town is also very guilty for not sharing what they have and not helping the literal starving people of their district. If you saw someone with no food and you had money and you spent that money on a party dress instead of food for them then guess what? You’re completely fucking evil and going to hell. But anyways, back to the actual point.) Prim has the Town genes and Katniss had the Seam genes. And who is good and pure and innocent and must be protected? Prim. And who is able to withstand inhuman amounts of hardship and do child labour? Katniss. Who has to sacrifice her own innocence and goodness and childhood to protect the other one? Katniss. Whose life and safety is considered not quite as valuable? Katniss.

And Gale and Peeta. I couldn’t care less who Katniss got with. She can pick who she wants. But just like Prim and Katniss, Gale and Peeta represent the rich and poor sides of the South. Despite Peeta not being nearly as rich as the most rich people in the South actually are. He’s still richer. He still fits into the metaphor and symbolism. And who is more kind and reasonable and right? Peeta. Who is more good and pure? Peeta. Who is shown as not being able to see past their emotions and grudges? Gale. Who is seen as stubborn and overly violent? Gale.

There are ways in which The Hunger Games is revolutionary and amazing. But there are ways in which it feels like some kind of disguised psyop.

So today I watched Nilce and Leon's cut video from one of their lives and they were talking about AI and its avance from the last year to 2024. Spoiler alert: it's scary. It's still not good enough to fool most people, but it's getting there, and faster than we thought.

But the point was: they were commenting about the absolute need for digital education for our society and how we need it desperately in the face of AI advances because otherwise, we would never be able to disentangle the reality from the lies AI have the power to create.

Then I remembered about 1984, by George Orwell, and Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley, and then Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury, and I was thinking about how right they all were in their predictions of a futuristic society.

So, for those how don't know those books, I'll quickly explain:

1984, by Orwell, is a distopia in wich people are watched every minute of every hour of every day by who they call the "Big Brother" (the origin of the reality show's name, yes, it's that creepy). Anyway, in the new society of 1984, Orwell reveals a deep fear that the truth would be hidden from was, our History and the world news kept from us by an authoritarian regime that would know everything everyone was doing at all times every minute of every day.

Brave New World, by Huxley, is a distopia in wich people are so overwhelmed with both useful and useless information all the time, when wouldn't be able to CARE about the truth. In this book, Huxley denounces a deep fear that our humanity would be suffocated by a tsunami-worth of information (oh, look at this new Iphone, nevermind it's created by slave work of people in Congo; look at this constant stream of repeated, poorly made movies, books, songs, etcetera), he feared that we'd be so distracted by everything, we wouldn't be able to see the shackles around our wrists.

In Fahrenheit 451, by Bradbury, on the other hand, we have a society in wich every published work became digital, so why would we need the published version of it anyway? Except that's the catch: everything in digital mode has been slightly modified to spread a series of small lies that changed society so deep, people were unaware of their own unhappiness. In the first chapter, for example, the MC's wife tries to commit suicide and then denies it ever happened once she wakes up —and we discover as she is saved that this is not uncommon thing to happen, to the point there's a squad of medical aid for that alone.

My point is, all those authors saw in the middle of the 20th century what our society would become, at least some aspects of it.

I think from the three of them, Huxley was the most obvious one: we are so constantly bombed with information by our social media it's hard to catch up. Just today I saw a woman on TikTok talking about all the things she was supposed to do as the internet says (eat healthy, go to work, earn enough to pay for rent and food and bills and so on, exercise regularly, keep up with political issues, fight for them, having at least 8 hours sleep on the right time, and so on) and I mean, it's incredible if we manage to do half of it (my Elizabeth Bennet moment here lol).

Now, we are constantly bombarded with information, both useless and useful, all the time. We cannot escape it: we wake up and look at our phones full of notification of several apps; we go to work and pass through several outdoors and commercials of every kind; we go to social media, there's merchandise everywhere, influencers posting that you HAVE to have this purse/make up/jewelry, have this of that life style, if you want to earn N money, and on it goes.

And it's such a powerful pull, we became to WANT to be the ones doing what they're doing and we expose our lives on social media like it's candy, completely ignorant, or choosing to ignore, the dangers of it and how exposed we are. As Orwell said, we are watched, every minute of every day. Just not by one single regime. We are policed through ourselves in a game of "find a motive to cancel N celebrity/influencer" and we forget that the things we are policing are rooted on a very specific system and while this system exists, there will always be people that will need to be canceled.

Because they are not the problem, they are the symptoms of a larger problem.

Anyway, I digress.

Finally, when we talk about Fahrenheit 451, that's when the AI technology enters the conversation by a full. In a capitalistic society, I doubt that people would just give up an entire market (publishing industry) to spread a new social order, however, with AI, they don't have to.

Let's be honest, how many of us use the internet and social media to find information? Do we go through scientific data and/or published content such as books when we want to know something or do we go to TikTok, Twitter or Google?

They don't need to bane and burn books to make us ignore that truth in the digital world is relative, they don't need to force us to do anything because we'll do it willingly if we allow ourselves to be distracted by the constant distractions and dispersement of what's really important: liberation.

Liberation for us all.

The shit you claim ai is doing now. It's not. And i've seen some truly unhinged shit that's either 1. been disproven or 2. is just fully illogical.

Example A: The ai is stealing actual furry art scam that was REPEATEDLY proven to be false. But this sure went around on twitter and tumblr and then the people who literally faked it tried to pull some bs "it was a social experiment" "It was to show how it could end up" nonsense. Fuck you.

Example B, the only case i've seen a job "stolen", word used FUCKING loosely: In a comments section i saw a dude explained that for his souvenir photography shop, their boss is using an ai to colour correct the photos and the photographers aren't allowed to change the settings on the camera (implied: because the ai won't work unless it has specific camera settings).

So this dude thinks the photographers job got stolen because the photographer can't adjust the camera settings and because his job description changed from colour correcting to checking that the ai hasn't messed up. Homeboy wasn't fired/ctx

To explain to you, in case you genuinely have no knowledge of history or how things work in job markets /gen:

These things have been happening since the industrial era and yet i'm not seeing a single one of you arguing for us to go back to pre machinery sweat shops for young girls. Cus y'all do realise that pre machinery, in history, the norm was FUCKING SWEAT SHOPS in the global north, right?

Job loss is bad, yeah, and it was super fucking bad for the people who had typewriting jobs when the computer came. SUL GLOBAL / NORTE GLOBAL - É cada vez mais comum ouvir falar do Sul Global. Muitas vezes, o termo é usado de forma contraditória e confusa. É usado, por exemplo, ora para se referir exclusivamente ao sul geográfico ou para substituir a denominação de países em desenvolvimento, ora para falar das comunidades mais vulneráveis, independentemente de onde estejam. Portanto, é importante avançar para uma definição que permita uma elaboração narrativa do termo que contribua para a mudança sistêmica. 

 Existe o risco de que o conceito de Sul Global seja usado para obscurecer e esconder desigualdades e injustiças dentro dos “países do Sul”. Esse conceito não pode se referir às oligarquias, empresários, latifundiários, administradores e representantes das transnacionais de um país do “Sul” ou em “caminhos em desenvolvimento”. 

 O Sul Global, então, refere-se exclusivamente às populações locais, comunidades indígenas, camponeses e organizações territoriais, vítimas dos impactos do capitalismo, do patriarcado, do colonialismo, da violência estrutural e da aplicação de políticas extrativistas de desenvolvimento. E às populações vulneráveis, deslocadas, sacrificadas, contaminadas, perseguidas, intimidadas e ameaçadas pelas corporações, pelo sistema financeiro e pelos Estados. Dessa forma, podemos encontrar comunidades do Sul Global nos Estados Unidos ou na Europa que atendem a essas mesmas condições. 

 Ao contrário, o Norte Global deve se referir a Estados, instituições fronteiriças, corporações, elites, agronegócios e oligarquias financeiras; indivíduos e instituições que facilitam ou se beneficiam da exploração, pilhagem e acumulação de riqueza. Desta forma podemos encontrar o Norte Global nos países do Sul.

Se usa por ejemplo algunas veces para hacer referencia exclusivamente al sur geográfico o para reemplazar la denominación de países en desarrollo, y otras, para hablar de las comunidades más vulnerables, sin importar el lugar en el que se encuentren. Por lo tanto, es importante avanzar hacia una definición que permita una elaboración narrativa del término que contribuya a un cambio sistémico. 

 Existe el riesgo de que el concepto Sur Global sea utilizado para difuminar y ocultar las desigualdades e injusticias al interior de los “países del sur”. Este concepto no puede hacer referencia a las oligarquías, empresarios, terratenientes, administradores y representantes de las transnacionales de un país del “Sur” o en “vías de desarrollo”. 

 Sur Global entonces, se refiere exclusivamente a poblaciones locales, comunidades indígenas, campesinas y organizaciones territoriales, que son víctimas de los impactos del capitalismo, el patriarcado, el colonialismo, la violencia estructural y la aplicación de políticas de desarrollo extractivista. Y a poblaciones vulnerables, desplazadas, sacrificadas, contaminadas, perseguidas, amedrentadas y amenazadas por las corporaciones, el sistema financiero y los Estados. De esta manera, podemos encontrar comunidades del Sur Global en Estados Unidos o en Europa, que cumplen con estas mismas condiciones. 

 Por el contrario, el Norte Global debe hacer referencia a los Estados, instituciones fronterizas, corporaciones, élites, oligarquías agroindustriales y financieras; individuos e instituciones que facilitan o se benefician de la explotación, saqueo y acaparamiento de la riqueza. De esta manera podemos encontrar al Norte Global en países del sur.

GLOBAL NORTH AND GLOBAL SOUTH - Currently in an upward trend, Global South is a term sometimes employed in a contradictory and confusing manner. It is sometimes used to exclusively speak of the south geographically or to replace the term developing countries. In other occasions, it alludes to the most vulnerable communities, irrespective of their geography. Therefore, it seems critical to develop a definition which constructs a narrative in favour of a systemic change. 

 The phrase itself may be employed to spread and cover inequalities and injustices in the Global South. The concept cannot allude to oligarchies, businesspeople, landowners, managers, and representatives of transnational corporations from ‘southern developing countries’. 

 The concept Global South designates a) those local communities, indigenous groups, country people and administrative divisions which are victims of the impacts resulting from capitalism, patriarchy, colonialism, structural violence and extractivism; and b) those who are defenceless, chased, intimidated and threatened by corporations, the economic system and the governmental system. Therefore, this definition encompasses Global South communities in the US and Europe as well. 

 Global North must then refer to States, territorial border institutions, elites, oligarchic agribusinesses, and finance agencies as well as individuals and entities which facilitate or obtain profit out of the exploitation, plundering and hoarding of wealth. Therefore, this definition encompasses Global North communities in southern countries.
