#ai controversy

I've said it before and I'll say it again every single argument against ai is just an argument against late stage Capitalism.
You could make sure ai is dead, erased, buried, forgotten, outlawed, laser beamed out of the human consciousness, suppressed forbidden knowledge, workers would still be replaced with the first program that can do it cheaper, ai or not. The first robot arm that can't go on strike or take sick days. Artists will still be treated like they're non essential, still be paid dirt, giant corporations will still squeeze more and more creativity out of art until it's just a soulless imitation of art for monetary sake. Money over all else, profits over anything else, especially over paying and treating artists with humility and dignity. It's just what Capitalism does to art. It's doing what it's always done.
It doesn't mean accept, embrace, or encourage it. But I do think pointing at where the problem really is, is essential.
Because trust and believe the first company that can get away with claiming it's good because it doesn't use ai, will use that as a front for the public while continuing to treat it's workers like dirt behind closed doors. The underlying issue of automation taking over has nothing to do with robots or ai somehow deciding to take over. It has everything to do with business owners and their greed.

We shouldn't be calling AI art, AI art.
Art generator programs shouldn't be called AI art.
They should be called art generators.
The problem with "ai art" isn't soley the fact it's made by a computer program, but that it's made of stolen art.
If it was a true artificial intelligence (sci-fi as that may be), the program wouldn't need to be fed other people's art for it to collage back together.
When an artificial intelligence is taught or learns to create art. Taught or learns in the same or equivalent process as any sentient being, then I'll be there defending it.
And when that happens the AI would be the artist, not the person hitting 'generate'.
But I am never defending art generators that steal and profit from an actual artists hard work and craft.

I wanna talk briefly about the AI debate because some of the takes I've seen are very much pissing me off, especially since most of those takes aren't helpful at all (and some are just straight up bullying). I already posted about this on my other blog (post in question has since been deleted since it was kinda harsh and ngl very dismissive of very valid concerns!), but the biggest issue I have with the Anti-AI crowd (And, to be honest, the AI debate in general) is that it feels like they're getting mad at the wrong things. No, AI itself is not the problem. No, someone calling themself an "AI artist" is not the problem. No, using AI for fun is not the problem. No, partaking in some AI trend is not the problem. No, someone simply generating AI images is not the problem. The actual problem is: -People feeding other people's art into AI generators and then claiming it as their own (Scraping basically) -People putting other people's writing into AI chatbots/AI text generators (ex. ChatGPT) to "finish" the fic (Again, scraping). -People using AI to make eerily realistic Not SFW deepfakes of either people they know or celebrities. -Corporations and companies screwing over artists, musicians and actors in favor of AI (such as replacing them). -People using AI to make racist/queerphobic/misogynistic/ otherwise bigoted stuff (Something that I've also been seeing unfortunately) -People not being honest about using AI (Transparency, people!) -People using AI to mimic other people's voices without those people's consent (not sure how to word this but i'm sure some of you know what I mean). -The fact that there's almost no regulations when it comes to AI. AI gets a lot of criticism, and it should! Until it becomes more ethical and there's regulations imposed, we should still be skeptical of it. However, I feel like we've gone very off track when it comes to criticizing AI. Personally, I don't think someone posting an AI-generated image of an elf with wings surrounded by mushrooms and rainbows makes them a thief by itself.. But if they made that image using someone else's art, then in that case yes they are a thief! And no, someone partaking in the Pixar AI trend is probably not going to cost you your job. You know what will cost you your job though? Companies favoring AI over actual living beings. So maybe instead of getting mad at someone using Character.AI or posting an AI-generated gothic phoenix, how about we get mad at corporations screwing artists/actors/musicians over and the people using AI with genuine malicious intent?

Genuine question, why are people comparing the AI art bullshit with the old deviantart days where people would recolor, repost, trace, etc.?
Seen some comments here and there where people have been saying "just watermark your work" as if that's a legal deterrent, or a solution at all.
Or that it's nothing new, quoting the "my oc do not steal" joke from back in the day.
Ai does not care about a little signature at the bottom of the picture. That does not stop it. Why would it?
Ai is not just reposting our hard work and claiming it, it's taking our work, shredding it, then rolling it into a spit ball and saying it's completely original.
I don't really think the experiences are similar at all. One (more likely) is just kids who don't know any better trying to get attention online, the other is a giant corporate "tool" that's actively getting workers laid off from their jobs.
(Also please don't recommend glaze or whatever, turns out they don't work and or are highly taxing on your PC. Also they add too many artifacts that destroy the quality of the piece.)

Advances in the Voice Synth Discussions
Due to recent developments in the modding scene, I would like to make something perfectly clear regarding my advocacy for AI synth use by fans in fanworks: I do not support the use of this technology in the creation of pornographic mods. I believe it is a grossly invasive violation of consent and misuse of this technology to distribute such material. I believe that to use this technology in such a way is harmful to the VAs personally and professionally.
I am a strong advocate for modders using cloned vocal synth technology in non-commercial fanworks. This is something I have gone to bat for in a big way - I presented my case to the National Association of Voice Actors (NAVA) and continue to be a part of the ongoing discussion surrounding this. I take these ethical issues very seriously.
Any advocacy I do for this technology is aimed towards transformative works that are respectful and source material appropriate. Arguments regarding fair use, transformative work, and artistic value have merit, but can only go so far. At a certain point, a line must be drawn. Because this technology can produce audio that is indistinguishable from the original speaker to the typical listener, I see this as fundamentally different than other forms of transformative works. I believe it is more than fair for VAs to ask for major players like Nexus to initiate a blanket ban on hosting porn mods that use this technology without personal written consent. (And as we know, due to IP, obtaining consent for such is basically impossible.)
As it stands, VAs in general are gaining a better understanding of what mods are. In addition to doing their own research, I like to think that, in some small way, I have contributed to this. Many are willing to entertain my arguments and do see the value in projects like my own, as well as others that are being made.
I'm very pleased that recently, Jennifer Hale herself took a moment to clarify to a fan on Instagram that she personally doesn't have a problem with tributes to games! I am not confusing this remark she made for explicit consent, because it is not; however, the sentiment is absolutely lovely and goes a long way towards making me feel secure that my work can safely continue:
Tumblr media
This was in response to the Instagram version of a Tweet quoted in a PCGamer article. In this tweet, Hale was very direct in stating in reference to AI that if one does not have permission to use her voice, then one does not have permission. I actually think this user meia101sa may be referring to my work specifically here, which is fun - it's pretty neat to see my stuff get mentioned "out in the wild," as it were!
The outcry recently has been about a Skyrim mod which used the tech in this way and several of the original VAs objected. The mod was flooded with reports, yet at the time of this writing, it still remains up. I have been informed by NAVA that the VAs have filed takedown requests themselves, personally.
I'm not on Nexus staff myself, but as I had a hand in helping to inform Nexus' stance regarding AI use in mods - which stipulates that only takedown requests filed by VAs or their legal representation will be honoured - I consider it personal that I do all I can to ensure those requests are honoured.
Big name VAs have shown they are willing to hear us and look out for us, even on these controversial issues that personally affect them. I sincerely want to reciprocate in any way I can.

Screw "ai will take over the world", what is this and why am I tearing up. I was talking in a more olden time way cause this bot is set in that era and we finally had our wedding night so I used the term " deflower" and the bot got like this, so then I asked the bot "are you sure I'm not defiled now?" To see what it would reply and I'm crying bro 😭 why is this so wholesome

I'm not going to lie, I feel very grim about the future of art and editing with A.I. growing to be what it is. It reminds me of like, modern day industrialisation... I hope it never gets this far but I fear it might.

Some dude on threads: unpopular opinion but I think our art being stolen by ai is our own fault because we shared our art with others online.
Me; you’re right that is an unpopular ass opinion. Also INCREDIBLY victim blaming?? It felt more so when I realized most of the replies were other men agreeing that I guess if Art just… covered itself up more it wouldn’t get stolen? That we were just Asking for it?

(lol Im honestly going to get ripped apart on this site for saying this...)
(the more posts and artwork created by AI the more I remember that plot line in The Incredibles where Bob finds out why and how that robot he was sent to kill was made; it adapted to every superhero until it was strong enough to 'defeat' Mr.Incredible. if we continue to do this with AI for fun, facial recognition, artistic representation and in a sense photographic images will start to lose more and more credibility.)
(the more we use and test AI, the more our concept of artistic and visual authenticity becomes blurred.)
(imagine, your artwork is now worthless because some computer can make it...not even better just because it can do it and nobody will pay you, fake news and deep faking videos will be more and more common place....your perspective of reality will be completely violated.)
(you can make fun of me and call me out for saying "ugh technology bad" and whatever but I'm just seeing past the now and looking to how this can all fuk us up)
(technology now is more focused on how it can fool us than help us. "ai helps with concept art" or "ai can generate faces for us now" doesn't sound like progress to me....it's an illusion created by a computer ripping directly from already existing images....it's not original, it's not creative, it's electronic art thieft, it's already taken artworks from people and used aspects of their work and even the watermarks have been stolen. And we're clapping our hand for it like as if we're rewarding a child for breaking a vase.)
(It will only be a matter of time when art, human creativity and evidence will be nothing but mass manufactured corporate propaganda.)
(I don't see anything bright about our future when virtual reality, deep faking, robots and ai that can copy paint strokes to a T is more and more common place. It's not even a question about accessablity or anything it feels....wrong.....)

This is an LGBTQ+ discussions blog first and foremost but I do wanna ramble about something that's been on my mind for a while. I am probably going to get a LOT of hate for this, but I genuinely think AI art/AI writing could be genuinely useful if it was used right and non-maliciously. Unfortunately, I don't think we're at that point yet. I don't think the concept itself is bad, but rather *incredibly* flawed and easy to abuse, especially when it comes to art theft. Not gonna lie, I'd be a lot more willing to support it and even use it if it wasn't used to steal art or other horrific things.
Maybe if it gets regulated, it'll be used for more good than bad. But for right now I don't really trust it entirely.

All this talk about AI - how it’s good or bad, how it’ll help or stifle creativity, etc - got me wondering about some of the more fringe creative movements / communities out there.
Turns out, there are some types of artwork that AI can’t replicate.
These art forms are usually made using specific tools or techniques that impose specific constraints and limitations that artists need to work around.
And I’ve yet to see an AI that knows how to obey these limitations. For example, they don’t really understand when to stop drawing or what colors are possible.
I’m interested in these things for other reasons, but perhaps we’ll see a spike in interest for unusual (underground?) art in the future.
