2024 Winter Three-Episode Check-In
This has been a season of reversals so far, with strong premieres stumbling and wobbly starts finding their stride. Check out the shows in need of a second look!
The team split up the three-episode reviews between staff volunteers, with one person putting together a short(ish) review on each series. Like we do with our check-in podcasts, we started from the bottom of our Premiere Digest list and worked our way up.
If we didn’t watch a show for at least three episodes, we skipped it, and we’ve used nice bold headers to help you quickly jump to the shows you’re interested in. We’ve also excluded shows that are continuing on in basically the same vein as our premiere review to conserve space. Unless specifically noted, we will not be mentioning overt spoilers for anything beyond episode three.
We don’t have the time to keep up with everything, so please let us know about any gems we might be missing in the comments!

Tales of Wedding Rings is a rather fun series so far (anime-only), but it bums me out how upset Hime gets when the subject of the other wives comes up, and the way Satou clearly values Hime above the other girls. The wives don't really have too much camaraderie with each other so far either, so it does feel more like a regular "harem" with a coat of "polycule" paint on top.
I hope that changes as the series goes! lol

Assorted Thoughts on Random Premiers (Part 1, maybe)
None of these are likely to get anyone's recommendation for the season (unless nothing good that we haven't seen comes out, which would be very sad but also par for the course for winter) but I still have Thoughts and Opinions.
These aren't all the ones I've watched so far, just the ones I have more to say about than "this is fine" or "this is ass".
Tales of Wedding Rings: I enjoyed this one so much more than I expected I would based on the 'oh this is one of those isekai' OP. It's truly greater than the sum of its parts, since nothing really stands out as being particularly good or original. I liked that Our Hero voluntarily isekai'd himself and it doesn't have any of the cynical jabs at its target demographic or genre that plague the vast majority of bargain-bin isekai shlock. It does itself a lot of credit just by not being embarrassed to be exactly what it is.
The Wrong Way to Use Healing Magic: Holy shit the animation is rough. There were a lot of jarring cuts and weird camera angles and having characters talking from off-screen in order to cut down on the amount of actual animating they had to do. And this is the first episode, which is one of the ones where they're supposed to showcase some of their best work. It's fucking dire, y'all. I feel so bad that the staff on this production had to work under what looks to be the god-awfulest of conditions.
As for the actual content, it's fine. I liked that the red one reacted to being kidnapped like a normal person, but he also reacted in similar fashion to the protagonist of the isekai novel I'm writing so now he's got me feeling competitive. I also like the scary lady. She's tall.

My end-of-the-winter-anime-season rankings:
1. The Wrong to Use Healing Magic (one of the best isekai in a long time)
2. A Sign of Affection (really picked up after Itsuomi and Oushi became friends)
3. Chained Soldier (fun)
4. The Foolish Angel Dances with the Devil (surprise of the season)
5. Surgeon Elise (Linden and Elise are my couple of the season)
6. Classroom of the Elite (idk why but the episodes felt like they ended fast, but still entertaining)
7. Solo Leveling (fantastic if you like action)
8. The Witch and the Beast (Ashaf is my favorite character of the season)
9. Villainess Lvl 99 (started off strong, but the stupid misunderstandings and the CGI dragon dumbed it down)
10. Banished from the Hero’s Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside (wholesome, but Ruti having feelings for Red is not so wholesome)
11. Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki-kun (although I’m fine who he ended up with, the latter half of the season was pretty boring)
12. Tales of Wedding Rings (ok harem, but that’s it)
13. 7th Time Loop (I know this may be quite the unpopular opinion with this being this so low, but I honestly found it boring for the most part; also falling in love with the guy that’s killed you multiple times is wild)
14. My Instant Death Ability is Overpowered (introduced way too many characters before the watchers could give a card about them before they died)
15. Demon Prince of Momochi House (weird, boring, not a lot of it makes sense to me)
