Oh! A combo of 8 and 9!
Hunted down and "til death do we part", huh?
I tried, but I eh, I have mixed feelings on this one ^^" it's meant to kinda be like a continuation of sorts for this fic that I wrote a while ago. "Til death do we part" is more of an implied thing, and I hope that's alright!
"Come on out, Honey... It's ok, I promise. If you come out now, then your punishment for running won't be as bad."
You pressed a hand over your mouth, trying to remain as quiet as possible while you hid behind a large tree. Being as careful as you could, you peeked around it's trunk, watching the lanky skeleton as he continued to search for you. Clad in nothing more than a pair of shorts, a tank top, and his oversized orange hoodie, you curled in on yourself, trying your best to preserve your body heat. It'd been a cold night, and it wasn't long after you'd fled from the cabin that it began to rain. You had no idea where you were and everything looked the same, but you were determined to escape and make it back home. You had to tell everyone that you were ok... While you had no idea how long you'd been gone, you had a feeling that your friends and family were missing you dearly.
A twig snapped, bringing you back to the present moment. You peeked around the tree at him again, taking note of where he was. Papyrus was much too close for comfort, and you glanced around, squinting your eyes as you tried to see in the gradually decreasing light. Carefully crouching down, you felt around the ground for a moment before your hands closed around a rock. If you threw it far enough away, maybe he'd go toward the noise and give you enough time to make a run for it. You knew he was incredibly smart and that the chances of it working were slim, but you needed to try anyway.
Peeking at him again, you waited for him to turn his back to you before throwing the rock as hard as you could. Papyrus' body jerked in surprise as the rock landed in some thick brush, before he relaxed again and cooed, "Awe, sweetheart... Won't you please come out? I know you're scared, but things will be ok, just you wait and see." As he began to stalk toward the brush where the rock had landed, you sprang into action, practically throwing yourself away from the tree and bolting in a random direction. Papyrus wasn't the least bit surprised as you ran from him again, and he sighed, slipping his phone out of his pocket. He unlocked the device and typed out a quick message before pressing send and pocketing it again.
Soon enough, you'd have bigger problems than him to worry about.
As you darted through the trees, you saw a road in the distance, and you nearly let out a relieved sob. Your feet ached and throbbed, and you were fairly sure you'd stepped on something and cut one of them, but you pressed on. When you finally approached the road, you nearly collapsed, your lungs burning as you desperately sucked in breath after breath. Your legs shook, and you were freezing, despite all the running you'd done. The rain had almost soaked all the way through the hoodie you'd stolen from Papyrus, and it was rapidly losing its ability to retain heat. You looked around, hoping beyond hope that you'd see a nearby town, or maybe even someone who was out for a drive.
While there weren't any buildings or cars in sight, you noticed a familiar jogging suit, and your eyes watered up as you took in the person who was wearing it. Feeling like you'd been saved, you finally let out a sob and ran toward the person, calling out to them and hoping they'd notice you. Registering your voice, they paused, turning to look at you. Breaking down into a fit of loud, messy sobbing, you threw your arms around them, "I'm so happy to see you, oh my god! What are you doing out here? Where are we? We need to leave, we need to leave now, please...!" Your unexpected savior instinctively wrapped his arms around you, letting out a deep breath in shock, "Y/N? IS THAT REALLY YOU?... WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?! I'VE BEEN SO WORRIED... IS PAPYRUS WITH YOU? I HAVEN'T SEEN OR HEARD FROM HIM IN A WHILE EITHER, AND I HAVE NO IDEA WHERE HE COULD BE!"
At hearing the elder skeleton brother's name, you whined and stole a quick glance around, making sure that he hadn't followed you. Upon finding that he was nowhere in sight, you shook your head, clinging to Sans, "No, I don't know where he is. You have to get me out of here though, please! It might be hard to believe, but your brother kidnapped me, and he's been keeping me in this cabin against my will. I need to get away from here before he finds me!" Sans' brow bones furrowed, "PAPY KIDNAPPED YOU? WHY ON EARTH WOULD HE DO SUCH A THING?!" You cried, your knuckles white as you continued clinging to him, "I dunno! He thinks we're gonna be a family or something. It doesn't matter though, please just help me get away from here!"
Sans nodded, gently patting your back, "OK, OK, I WILL. CAN YOU WALK ALRIGHT? I WOULD BE HAPPY TO CARRY YOU IF NEED BE." You shrugged, drawing in a deep, shaky breath, "I think I cut one of my feet on something when I was running, and I can't feel my legs." The skeleton made a sound in acknowledgment, carefully hoisting you up into his arms, "THAT'S OK, HUMAN... THERE WE GO. NICE AND EASY... WILL YOU BE COMFORTABLE LIKE THIS?" You nodded, wrapping your arms around him and making a weak sound in confirmation, "I'll be fine, just please get me out of here, Sans." He nodded again, "WILL DO. I'M GOING TO USE A SHORTCUT, SO YOU MAY WANT TO CLOSE YOUR EYES FOR A BIT."
You obliged, your bottom lip quivering as your eyes fluttered shut. You felt the world around you shifting, and for a very brief moment, it was as if you existed in zero gravity. Once Sans had reached his location of choice and you felt things settle around you, you carefully cracked open an eye to peek at the new surroundings. As he began to walk, you opened your eyes, your brows becoming furrowed, "Sans?... Where are we?" The skeleton stole a quick glance at you and smiled warmly, "WE'RE HOME, Y/N! DON'T YOU RECOGNIZE IT?" You looked around for a moment, and as everything began to look familiar, your eyes watered up again and you began to panic, "This isn't my home! PLEASE, I'm begging you, Sans, please help me get out of here! I need to get as far away as possible!"
A floorboard creaked and your attention snapped to an open doorway, where a tall, lanky figure waited for you. As his gaze bore into you, he smiled sweetly, "Angel, c'mon... This is your home now, and you just don't realize yet that this is the safest place for you. Sans even agrees with me on that one, too." You looked up at Sans with wide eyes, "Sans, you KNEW about this?!" The skeleton in question hummed, "THAT WOULD BE CORRECT, MY DARLING HUMAN." The nickname caught you off guard, and you stared at him in horror as he stopped walking and shifted his full attention to you. As his eye lights locked onto your terrified face, you continued to stare, your blood running cold as they shifted into large hearts and he purred, "NOTHING HAS TO CHANGE, YOU KNOW... IT CAN BE JUST THE THREE OF US, THE WAY IT USED TO BE. WE'RE ONLY DOING THIS TO KEEP YOU SAFE, LOVE. YOU KNOW THAT, RIGHT?" You began to thrash in his hold, tears dripping down your face as you screamed. Papyrus moved closer to you and Sans, chuckling to himself, "See what I mean, bro? They make the cutest noises." Sans grinned, almost appearing genuinely lovestruck, "THAT THEY DO, PAPS... I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR WHAT OTHER SOUNDS THEY MAKE." Sans' grip on you tightened until you could no longer move, and Papyrus reached out, delicately touching your face, "Well since you're here now, we can go find out." You frantically shook your head and began to protest, and Sans laughed softly, choosing to ignore you, "FOR ONCE, I CAN FINALLY SAY THAT THAT'S A GREAT IDEA."
Papyrus made a sound in agreement, his own eye lights shifting into hearts as he leaned down and pressed a kiss to your forehead. His teeth lingered for a moment and you shivered as he mumbled against your skin, "I'm glad... The sooner we start, the better~"

WayV as Water Park Employees
Tumblr media
Warnings: none? I can’t believe it
AN: hey....hi....how y’all doin.....I meant to post this so long ago but I kept loosing inspiration for it :(( thank you to everyone for being so patient. I hope you enjoy this fun little headcannon!
Tumblr media
Kun is definitely the head lifeguard
though he hasn’t been there as long as Ten, he does make up for it in his dedication to the job
It’s not that he’s uptight, but the other employees are a little too relaxed for his taste, so he’s usually the one in charge (which is fine by Ten who prefers to relax by the lazy river)
His job mainly consists of walking around the park, making sure the rides are working, checking in with employees to make sure they’ve been drinking water and applying sunscreen, and helping guests whenever possible
Since is aura is so adult, he is easily trusted by everyone
This means that if a child is lost, they’ll most likely walk right past the other lifeguards and into Kun’s arms
(Which he’ll never admit out loud but it made him feel very wanted. And the look on Lucas’s face as they walk right past him is always priceless)
Though he does get sad when he hears people remark how mean and no fun he is, he knows that without him the park would be in shambles
The other members of the park thankfully know him well enough that they can tell when he’s feeling a bit down. On those days, the make sure to be good around with him, hype him up, and generally raise his mood
He’s always thankful on those days for his park family (though he could go without Hendery shouting that he has a nice ass over the megaphone), and repays them tenfold by carrying extra supplies with him
(In a fanny pack that YangYang got him as a joke that he didn’t understand and wears unironically everywhere)
This includes sunscreen, lip balm, eye drops, and ear cleanser
He values skin protection, so you’ll rarely see him without his job issued visor (the band basically gets hidden under his floppy hair)
Always wears the assigned uniform of red shorts and a white shirt with the park logo on it, his lanyard with a whistle and his keycard on it (which is hooked on by a safety clip so it’ll never strangle him), and some beat-up flip flops he’s had since forever
Ten works the lazy river
Ten is...well, let’s just say he’s a complicated character
Though Kun doesn’t doubt that Ten has the skill to step up and take charge
Ten just doesn’t have the drive to
He’s worked at the park for longer than anyone, but only because he started so young and just kept coming back after school ended
He started off being the Kun type, who looks so intimidating with his clipboard and yelling at people not to run
But that just got...exhausting
He hated being the bad guy
Kids would cry for being yelled at, parents would be upset at his words no matter what he said (company policy or his own), or older people would demand he brings them all types of crazy items (from sunscreen to a new section of the park)
He was just so...tired
What was the point of working at the Water Park, a place designed to be fun, if he hated every second of it
So, when Kun arrived at his interview in a button-up and a glittering watch, Ten threw his clipboard aside and requested to move to the Lazy River
Best. Choice. Ever
The water is too shallow for anyone to drown and too slow for kids to make a ruckus
Mainly, his job consists of lounging on his lifeguard tower, reading a book and softly playing music from the speaker he snuck up there
Sometimes, if the days are really slow, Ten steals an intertube and floats along the river for hours (until Kun yells at him to return to his position)
He doesn’t like kids so much, so most of his interactions with the guests are when he gets to join this one group of older ladies who frequent the park, linking up tubes so the can all chat and float together
(Ten has the hottest gossip in town)
Though he does like to push policy, he will wear the red shorts of the uniform (he claims they make his butt look good), but his top will rarely be the issued one
Depending on who he sees at the park, Ten could show up in a mismatched T-shirt and flip flop combo, or a nice swim shirt that defines his chest
(Lucas is always amazed that Ten always knows what days to look good because cute guests, and no one has the heart to tell him Ten packs both options in his bag)
Sicheng works the wave pool
Though newer to the team, Sicheng has almost more experience that Ten because he used to work at a different Water Park
When he moved, he figured he already had the experience, so why not go for the same job
At first, Sicheng was intimidating
He rarely talked to anyone besides Kun, and even then it was all professional
He almost looked scary sitting on the lifeguard tower, sweeping his eyes over the people below him
The first ice breaker was when he rescued a drowning woman, pulling her to safety and giving her CPR
Though the team was intimidated by him, the did admit that looked cool as heck
So, slowly, they started to talk to him more
And more
And more until finally, Sicheng was the one to start conversations and openly laugh at jokes
Turns out, he just likes to be razor focused when working so that he can ensure no one gets hurt
(After all, the Wave Pool is the chaos zone)
And it only made the team admire him more
He doesn’t like to wear hats because they always get lost when he has to dive in, so Kun installed an umbrella for his chair
(that act of kindness brought a blush to his cheeks, and he was teased for it the rest of the day)
He’s the type to wear sunscreen in an almost comical fashion - two thick lines under his eyes are always heavy with it
Even though he looks like an idiot, it’s endearing and makes his already large group of admirers like him even more
While he does wear the uniform, he prefers the wet shoe to sandal, and always takes off his lanyard when he’s on duty (which means he always has to make trips back to his chair to retrieve it later)
Lucas works in the Kids Zone
This one should be no surprise
Lucas is a giant kid himself, so it was a no brainer when he was hired that he should work amongst kids
That and the fact that he is so tall he can easily rescue the kids should they climb too high on the play structure and get scared
Sometimes his height works against him, bonking his head as he tries to duck and weave through the elaborate play structure
And sometimes there are kids who get scared of him at first
But his happy personality and goofy nature usually work to calm the child and get them to trust him
(though this personality is why kids will run right past him to get help from Kun)
He isn’t too great in high stakes situations, as his worry for the kids sometimes overtakes his training, but he does have a standard procedure during this time
Blowing on his whistle three times in succession will have either Ten or Kun running over, taking over the situation while Lucas tries to calm the parents
He does have a steady group of followers who admire him, both young and older
The same group of kids can always be found scurrying around him, jumping on him, and playing with him
Sometimes the sides of the Kids Zone will be full of teenagers, just waiting for a moment to chat him up during his downtime
(though they’re usually disappointed because Lucas’s energy and stamina is ridiculous)
At first he was given the standard white top but poor baby was getting uncomfortable with all the staring so Kun got red shirts and white shorts for him to wear
Never wears his lanyard because he’s worried one of the kids will accidentally get hurt if it swings and hits them
His feet are always covered in electric green water shoes that his Mom got him, and usually his neck has long streaks of white sunscreen (bc he gets too excited about being in the water again he doesn’t take the time to rub it in)
Xiaojun works at the concession stand
Don’t get him wrong, Xiaojun absolutely loves water
The only thing is...he’s not a super huge fan of chlorinated water
He could spend hours upon hours at the beach just surfing up some waves and relaxing in the beach
Unfortunately, the nearest beach is over an hour away and he can’t justify going back and forth each day to work
(trust me, he tried. He loved working at the boardwalk but his old hand-me-down car just gave up on him and the bus doesn’t come frequently enough to take him down there)
So, he takes the next best thing
The concession stand is perfectly situated to where he can see everyone enjoying the water without it reflecting blinding sunlight into the booth
The shop is also air conditioned which is perfect for the blazing hot days of summer
His manager is a kid only a few years older than him that should be working in the office but will typically spend all day playing video games
Because of this, Xiaojun can practically get away with anything, including sneaking off during the down hours to hang out with one of his friends or giving them more than their allotted snack coupons can yet
Although he may look a little shy, Xiaojun is VERY good at his job
A customer will walk up only wanting a bottle of water and walk away with four hot dogs, a large soda, and novelty cup from the park
No one really knows how he does it - but YangYang likes to joke that his eyebrows hypnotize the customers into buying anything he says
He doesn’t wear the standard uniform, unfortunately
He can wear pretty much anything he wants, but he has to wear a bright blue apron with the park logo and slogan on it and the matching hat
(you bet your ass he’s wearing some cargo shorts)
Hendery alternates between the two-seater and single rider slides
Listen
The best part of Water Parks have always been the rides that whip you so hard and fast that by the time you reach the bottom the tube has come out from under you and your bathing suit has given you the tightest wedgie of your life
At least, that’s what Hendery thinks
So it was absolutely no surprise that when he was asked where he wanted to work at the park, he said the inner tube rides
Whether pushing people in or helping them out, he absolutely loves the job
At first, he was a little jealous
A “I wish I could be going on the rides” type of harmless jealousy
But it was only as the weeks went on that he realized that just seeing and interacting with the different types of riders made it so much fun!
Talking to the scaredy cats to help them calm down, assuring parents that the rides are safe, couples telling him about their date night, high fiving the kids who just keep coming back for more
It’s so unlike any job he’s ever worked before
Although he might not get to hang out with his friends and goof off as much as he likes, there’s a certain proud feeling of responsibility that makes those not so great moments better
He’s also the type of person who finds joy in the little things so even though his personality is more on the shy side with new people, he has that type of aura that somehow convinces other people to do all the talking and they leave new friends
Unfortunately…he’s also the forgetful type
Always forgets to bring his uniform shirt to work or gets it mixed up with one of his hundred other white shirt
Kun used to make his wear the rashguard of shame (the only item left from the old branding) but now he just makes sure to keep a pile of spares on hand
He’s also the most likely to have a sunburn by the end of the day if the older boys don’t keep an eye out for him
YangYang alternates between the group rides, and the kiddie slides
YangYang is many things, but the word most people like to use is versatile
He picks up new things very quickly and adapts to new situations with the ease of a veteran
Although he’s the youngest, the people around him put a lot of trust in him and his abilities
(which sometimes stresses him out to the point that he bottles up his emotions until he ends up crying in the locker room during his breaks. His friends have gotten really good at noticing when he’s at his breaking point and will quickly get him away from the situation. It’s really the only moment of vulnerability they see from the usually happy-go-lucky boy)
This trust somehow got him working various stations across the park, and he’ll move pretty much wherever people need him
He’s currently working the group rides and kiddie slides, which is the craziest juxtaposition
His mornings involve splashing around near Lucas in the Kids Zone, helping kids through the various short slides for them to play with
After his lunch break, usually involved with hanging around with Xiaojun and his other friend who shares the same lunch break that day (M = Kun, Tu = Ten, W = Hendery + Sicheng, Th = Ten + Lucas, F = Lucas, Sat = Hendery + Lucas + Kun, Sun = Ten + Hendery), he’ll head over to the group ride, usually filing drunk adults into rafts and gently declining their offers of drinks
He loves the weird combinations of his day, and the new adventure that come when Kun calls him to the office to give him his new responsibilities
He likes to play the younger brother character that his friends have given him because it allows him to pull mischievous pranks with little to no repercussions
It’s not unusual for people to see him being chased around the park by his friends, big smiles across his face as he laughs with the biggest smile
It does sometimes give guests whiplash when they watch him shoot a fellow lifeguard with a water gun then five minutes later watch him give safety instructions with a serious expression
Unlike his playful personality may suggest, he takes his job really serious - especially because people’s lives are on the line
He always wear a clean uniform, including his lanyard with an embarrassing picture of his ID swinging from his neck
And only grimaces a little when Kun grabs his face to slather it in sunscreen

Resbang 2019: hot for the teacher (chapter two)
“I am not ready,” Maka groans, slumping in her chair as Blake gives her the look from where he stands in her classroom.
She finished setting it up two days ago. Her cork boards are draped in yellow butcher paper and bordered with different rainbow patterns. There’s various streamers and decorations across the top of her whiteboard, and a magnetic holder with rainbow expo markers waiting to be used. The student’s desks are arranged into groups of four with one group of five, all of them at a slant towards the whiteboard. Her whole room is on a slant in the same direction, but it still felt spacious.
She laid down some rainbow carpets in the library and a few yellow and orange pillows. There’s lap desks and yoga ball seats stacked in the back corner for students to use when needed, and she even had the standards for the first unit in all content areas written on the board.
“You’re ready,” Blake walks to her desk and sits on one of the stools she spray painted to match her theme, “what’s psyching you out?”
“I’m gonna fuck it up,” she groans again, “I just got the roster and I don’t know who to place where. I don’t know their levels, I don’t have data folders, I don’t know what to do.”
“Maks,” she peeks from under her bangs. Blake’s arms are folded and he had the look on his face again that basically says are you serious, “you’re a first year teacher. Everyone knows you’re just now getting ready and you don’t know everything and that is fine. That’s why you have Medusa,” Maka snorts at the mention of her teammate, “and you have a whole staff ready to help you.”
“But I don’t want to have to ask, I feel like I should already know what to do! I went through four years of college for it!”
“If you were supposed to know everything about your job, you wouldn’t be a teacher.”
She nods to his words and looks at the roster on her desk. Seventeen names, seventeen little minds in the palm of her hands. Seventeen futures she needs to teach and guide. Seventeen lives she is going to influence for forever.
“Don’t zone off,” Blake snaps his fingers in front of her, “I see it on your face. You’re going to be fine. Remember, I’m here if you need anything. And the whole staff.”
He leaves then, leaving Maka sitting in silence in her room. She takes one last look at the roster, takes a deep breath and goes to work.
She is sitting on the floor, feeding sheets of lamination filled with name tags, calendar numbers, and probing questions, when her door opens. She doesn’t even turn around, figuring it’s Blake, and continued doing her work. But the throat clear behind her is unusual and she turns around to see someone who is definitely not Blake.
He’s tall, taller than Blake. A t-shirt marked with an inspiring quote is taunt across his chest. His hair is bleach white, eyes blood red, and face grimacing from the smell of lamination. His eyes wander over the room before falling back onto her and his lips twitch into a smile, though it looked painful.
“Maka Albarn?” his voice is gravelly as he adjusted the one-strap bag across his chest.
“In the flesh,” she pulls the laminated sheet from the machine and stands up, knees popping from sitting for so long. “Are you the tech guy? My smartboard hasn’t been working properly and I’m not sure how to set it up to my laptop.”
“No, I’m not,” he walks into the room, the door closing behind him, “but I can help you with that. The name is Soul Evans.”
“Evans? Are you the music teacher?”
“No, that would be my brother,” he scratches the back his head and his eyes flick around the room again, “it’s pretty bright in here. Kinda hurts the eyes.”
“Well, yellow is a positive color,” Maka crosses her arms, “I don’t want to be rude or anything, but who are you exactly?”
“They didn’t tell you?” he cocks a snowy brow. Maka shakes her head and shifts her weight. “Figures. This district sucks. I’m your new co.”
“Co?”
“Co-Teacher. They increased the class size and hired me to teach with you. We have twenty-six little demons to teach together.” He swings his bag around himself as the floor falls from under Maka’s feet. He digs inside his bag before pulling out of a manila folder and hands it to her. Inside is a class roster with both of their names at the top and the names of twenty-six students. Some of them were from her original roster and the others were names she didn’t recognize. If felt like the world had froze.
“Twenty-six?” Her voice hitches and she feels her heart pick up. Breathe, her mind tells her, but words are jumping around in her head and she can’t catch them.
“You had no idea,” Soul sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose, “okay, let’s go see the Doc and talk this out. We have time still to sort out some room stuff, discuss the lessons for the first week, maybe we can meet-up --,”
“I can’t teach twenty-six kids,” she clutches the papers, knuckles white, “I could barely wrap my head around seventeen kids. But twenty-six? That’s crazy! And now you need a-a desk?”
“Are you okay?” He knitts his eyebrows together, “I mean, we just have to do a couple trainings together to get the hang of what to do and how our styles work. I’ve co-taught in the past, so it won’t be too bad. Haven’t you worked with, like, assistants?”
“This is my first year,” she all but whimpers, looking at him. Then the tears start and she lets out a groan, spinning around and walking to her desk. She slumps behind it and looks at the list in her hands again, tears rolling down her cheeks. She lets out a deep, shaking breath and leans forward, fingers digging into the tightness at the top of her ponytail.
“Okay, so,” Soul’s voice is moving closer to her, more calming than his previous tone, “we’ll go to the Doc, see where the message got missed. Then, we’ll figure out where to go from there, right?”
“It doesn’t matter,” her voice is breaking, “it’s already done. It’s not like-like going back through files will prepare us for what is to come. I mean, look, I am already a mess and kids haven’t even shown up yet!”
“Every teacher has a messy spot.”
“You should check out our teammate,” Maka snorts and sits back up taking a deep breath and closing her eyes. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to have an … outburst like that. Just, just give me a second.”
“Okay.”
She hears the sound of chair feet moving across the carpet and feels his presence across from her. She wonders if he thinks she is a freak, some kind of crazy lady who shouldn’ be teaching. But, when she opens her eyes, now free of tears, he is simply sitting with his cheek in palm and eyes half-lidded as if there was no care in the world; as if he didn’t just see his now co-teacher ball her eyes out and whine for a solid minute.
His eyes catch hers and he smirks a little. “You okay now?”
“‘M okay,” Maka sighs, resisting the urge to allow more tears to fall, “okay, okay. Just ... I’m gonna run to the bathroom and try not look like I just bawled my eyes out for a whole minute.”
“I’ll meet you in the Doc’s office,” Soul makes the way towards her -- their classroom door. “And Maka? Don’t worry. It’ll be okay. We can talk about the details and whatnot later. We’re partners this year so, let’s keep it cool, yeah?”
“Yeah,” she smiles, eyes beginning to feel less puffy, “see you in Dr. Mortimor’s office.”
--
“The order came through about three days ago,” Dr. Mortimor is sitting in his office chair, looking at his dual screen computer, and twisting an end of his moustache between his fingers. “I requested another unit to be added because of enrollment, but the district decided to do a co-teaching classroom instead. So, I conducted some interviews and then told them my picks. They had the ultimate decision and then sent a message to our secretary. She then put the letter in Ms. Gorgon’s box to deliver to you, Ms. Albarn, because your mailbox isn’t set up yet.”
“What?” Maka feels her face go white, “But I never got that letter.”
“I’ll talk to Ms. Gorgon,” Dr. Mortimor turns in his chair and faces the two. “But for now, take the rest of the day as a chance to get to know each other and add some of Mr. Evans touch to the classroom! I am sure there only needs to be a few adjustments to make Mr. Evans comfortable. Isn’t that right?”
Soul puckers his lips slightly at Dr. Mortimor’s words but nods nonetheless. Dr. Moritmor smiles at both of them and then stands up, revealing that his bottom half is a pair of cargo shorts while his upper half dons a light blue button down and matching tie combo. His smile seems to get larger, upper lip twitching with his moustache. He excuses himself to go to a meeting and then disappears through his office door.
“So, what do you do in your free-time?” Soul smirks and Maka glares at him, crossing her arms.
“You can’t just joke at a time like this! And I can’t believe they just dumped you here, without telling me.” The two start making their way back to her -- their classroom.
“I guess they tried to,” Soul buries his hands into his pockets, “I mean, who is Ms. Gorgon that was mentioned?”
“That one teammate I mentioned even earlier. She’s, ah, kinda reserved. But she’s the team-leader because there’s only two classrooms. She’s also my mentor. She’s mostly just given me some extra books from her library to add to mine. That’s really it.”
“She’s supposed to give you resources and information from the different meetings she attends,” Soul opens the door for Maka to her -- their classroom, and she mutters a thanks, “let’s see if she put the letter on your desk. Or maybe just forgot?”
“You obviously haven’t even been in the same room as her,” Maka snorts, rubbing her hands over her face, “she drains the life out of any environment. She told me I was gonna screw up the kids.”
“That’s not a very helpful mentor,” Soul looks around the room, “so maybe we should move on from the letter. I’m here, I’m getting paid. You’re here, you’re getting paid. And, we can’t change what the district wants. So, let’s talk room arrangements. Now that there’s more kids, we need to straighten this place out.”
“And we need more desks.” Maka adds.
“And a group table for me.”
“And more materials.”
“Laptops.”
“Library books.”
The two look at each other and Maka feels a twinge of tension hit her. Her face flushes, with frustration or embarrassment, she isn’t sure. And, she isn’t sure if she wants to think too hard about which one it may be.
She sighs and rolls her shoulders before tightening her ponytail. The two scanned the room and almost naturally they both head for the desks and start rearranging them. She had originally made the desks into groups, but because of the increase of students, they adjust the desks into more of a row style, putting three desks in each row and then making two columns with a big aisle down the middle. Soul excuses himself for a moment after they arrange the desks and returned with the custodian and ten more desks.
They move the desks, change a group table to Soul’s desk, and set up the laptops into an accessible cabinet. While Soul ensures the laptops chargers are working, Maka moves bookshelves and creates a larger, wider classroom library. Slowly but surely, the room becomes a space that can comfortably hold twenty-six kids and two adults.
A list had been made of the additional things they needed, materials from the store for students and supplies the school needed to provide. They sit at Maka’s desk, hunched over and mumbling about who will take what responsibility when Blake shows up with a bag of take-out.
“You must be Wes’s brother,” Blake settles at Maka’s desk and starts digging for food in the bag.
“The one and only,” Soul takes a container of lo mein from the man with a nod, “it’s going to be a little weird working with him after all this time, but I guess it’s cool.”
“Did you guys use to work together before?” Maka asks, twisting a forkful from her own container of lo mein. The two of them had been so focused on fixing the room up they didn’t have time to actually get to know each other.
“No, when he got his degree he moved here. I stayed up north for a little longer and moved down here a few years ago. I was a reading coach at Brook Elementary but then Wes told me about your school, I contacted Doc about any positions and interviewed for here. District had the ultimate say though, as we found out.”
“So you’re a reading coach?”
“I have a Kindergarten through 5th Grade Bachelor’s Degree with Reading and ESE Endorsements. So when I got hired on at Brook, they used me for Reading.”
“I guess it must have been nice to focus on one thing,” Maka looks at her food, pushing it around, “thinking about planning for all four subjects gives me a little anxiety.”
“Aren’t you team planning?” Blake raises a brow, “Sid and I split the semester. I get K-2 planning and he does 3-5 and then we swap. Some classroom teachers will split the subjects.”
“Ah, no, I haven’t heard anything from Gorgon. She’s barely spoken to me.”
“You should talk to the Doc about that,” Soul pushes the remainder of his dinner forward, “A mentor is supposed to actually help you, you know. I’m gonna leave now, though. I’ll get here early to get some of the materials from our list. You guys have a good night.”
“You too,” Blake cracks a big smile, “look forward to working with you!”
“I’ll swing by the store tomorrow morning to get more notebooks and folders,” Maka smiles gently toward Soul who returns the gesture, “get enough sleep, long day tomorrow.”
Soul nods and leaves, closing the door gently behind him. Maka breaks her gaze from where Soul left and looks to Blake who was leaning back and smirking dangerously. She rolls her eyes and feels her cheeks flush before mumbling at him to shut up and help her clean up their dinner.
