Entry 3: The African Woman Archive (Social Media)
The African Woman Archive is a research and online repository based in Ghana, dedicated to documenting historical images and works of black women across the African diaspora. By showcasing historical images and works of black women across different cultures, it emphasizes the multifaceted nature of the African diaspora and underscores the fact that black women's experiences are not monolithic.

Race is a social construct that categorizes people based on physical attributes, such as skin color, hair texture, and facial features. Racial categorizations are not grounded in biological reality but are instead products of historical, social, and cultural factors that have been used to classify and differentiate human populations. (Sesardic) In the context of the African diaspora, "black" is a racial category that encompasses people with African ancestry. However, it's crucial to recognize that race is not a determinant of culture. People who are categorized as “Black” can belong to a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and traditions.

Race and skin color are often mistakenly conflated with culture, but they are distinct concepts. It's essential to understand the differences between these terms to avoid perpetuating stereotypes.  Through this curated collection, the archive not only highlights the richness of African culture but also the ways in which it has evolved and adapted in different regions over time. This representation of diverse cultures helps break down stereotypes and misconceptions about the experiences of black women and fosters a deeper understanding of their historical significance.
Multiculturalism is the recognition and appreciation of different cultural backgrounds, promoting coexistence and understanding among diverse groups. The African Woman Archive contributes to multiculturalism by fostering a deeper understanding of the shared experiences and distinctiveness of black women from different cultures. It encourages people from various backgrounds to engage with each other's histories and celebrate their shared heritage.

Leo Antony “Tony” Gleaton (August 4, 1948 - August 14, 2015) was an African American photographer, scholar, and artist who is known for his photographic images capturing and documenting the African influence in the American West and Central and South America. The youngest son of an elementary school teacher and a police officer was born in Detroit. His family moved to California. He played football in high school and briefly at East Los Angeles Junior College before joining the Marine Corps. While on his first tour of duty in Vietnam, he became fascinated with the camera. After serving in the Marine Corps, he enrolled at UCLA. He took a photography class that revealed his talent for shooting photos. He studied for a semester at the Arts Center School of Design before venturing to New York to pursue his aspirations of becoming a fashion photographer. He hitchhiked throughout the American West, photographing cowboys first in northeastern Nevada and then in Texas. He captured the lives of Native American ranch hands and African American rodeo riders. His photographic ventures in Texas, Colorado, Nevada, Idaho, and Kansas formed the essence of his project titled Cowboys: Reconstructing an American Myth. This collection featured a series of portraits of African, Native, Mexican, and Euro-American cowboys. He moved to Mexico City, he resided with the Tarahumara Indians in northern Mexico. He began Tengo Casi 500 Años: Africa’s Legacy in Mexico, Central & South America. He photographed the present-day descendants of African slaves brought to the region by Spanish conquistadors in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. The collection was placed on exhibit by the Smithsonian Museum and toured throughout Mexico and Cuba with the sponsorship of the Mexican National Council of Art. He had expanded his project to include Central and South America. He became a visiting professor of photography at Texas Tech University. He finished a MA in Art at Bard College. He became a scholar in residence for the Texas Tech Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library in Lubbock. The collection houses the Tony Gleaton Archive. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg1axlJuyN5Ey0gnvzrn5eB7bR8AjrdOzTnegk0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
