Verses 12.3 and 12.4 - Jnana Yoga

ये त्वक्षरमनिर्देश्यमव्यक्तं पर्युपासते ।सर्वत्रगमचिन्त्यञ्च कूटस्थमचलन्ध्रुवम् ॥ १२-३॥

सन्नियम्येन्द्रियग्रामं सर्वत्र समबुद्धयः । ते प्राप्नुवन्ति मामेव सर्वभूतहिते रताः ॥ १२-४॥

Those who worship the imperishable, the indefinable, the unmanifest, the omnipresent, the unthinkable, the unchangeable, the immovable and the eternal; (12.3)

Having restrained all the senses, even-minded everywhere, rejoicing ever in the welfare of all beings — verily they also come unto Me. (12.4)

These verses describe the characteristics and the destination of those who follow the path of jnana-yoga, or the yoga of knowledge, which aims at realizing the absolute reality beyond the material world. These jnana-yogis worship the supreme Brahman, which is the source of everything, but is also beyond the reach of the senses and the mind. They do not worship any personal form of God, but rather the impersonal aspect of the divine, which is eternal, unchanging, and all-pervading. They are detached from the material world and its dualities, and they control their senses and mind by practicing meditation and discrimination. They are compassionate towards all living beings and seek their welfare. By such devotion and renunciation, they attain the supreme goal of liberation, or moksha, which is to merge with the Brahman and become free from the cycle of birth and death.

Verse 11.46 - Vishwarup Darshan Yoga

किरीटिनं गदिनं चक्रहस्त- मिच्छामि त्वां द्रष्टुमहं तथैव | तेनैव रूपेण चतुर्भुजेन सहस्रबाहो भव विश्वमूर्ते ||

Wearing the crown, carrying the mace, disc in hand, I wish to see you as before, in that very form, four-armed, O thousand-armed, O Cosmic Form.

This verse is spoken by Arjuna, the warrior prince and the disciple of Lord Krishna, after witnessing the Cosmic Form (Vishwarupa) of the Lord. Arjuna is overwhelmed by the awe-inspiring and terrifying vision of the Supreme Being, who displays his infinite manifestations and power. Arjuna realizes that Krishna is much more than his friend and charioteer, he is the source of all creation and the master of all beings. Arjuna praises and surrenders to Krishna, but also requests him to resume his human form, which is more pleasing and familiar to him. Arjuna prefers to relate to Krishna as a friend and a guide, rather than as the Almighty Lord.

The verse expresses the dual nature of Krishna, who is both transcendent and immanent, both personal and impersonal, both human and divine. Krishna reveals his Cosmic Form to Arjuna to show him the Reality of his existence, which is beyond the limitations of time, space, and causation. Krishna also demonstrates his grace and compassion by granting Arjuna the divine vision (divya chakshu) to behold his glory. However, Krishna does not impose his Cosmic Form on Arjuna, but respects his free will and choice. Krishna agrees to revert to his four-armed form, which is the symbol of his sovereignty and benevolence, and then to his two-armed form, which is the symbol of his intimacy and friendship.

The verse also illustrates the difference between the paths of knowledge (jnana) and devotion (bhakti) in Hinduism. The path of knowledge seeks to realize the absolute and impersonal aspect of God, which is beyond name, form, and attributes. The path of devotion seeks to worship the personal and manifest aspect of God, which has a name, form, and attributes. Arjuna represents the devotee, who is more attracted to the personal aspect of God, and who finds the impersonal aspect of God to be incomprehensible and frightening. Krishna represents the perfect synthesis of both aspects, who can reveal himself according to the level and inclination of the seeker.

There are many verses from other Vedic texts that have a similar theme or message as the Bhagvad Gita Verse 11.46. Here are some examples:

- Rigveda 10.90.9:

In the Rigveda, there is a hymn (10.90) called the Purusha Sukta, which describes the cosmic man (Purusha) who is sacrificed by the gods to create the universe. The Purusha is said to have a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, and a thousand feet, and to pervade the earth and the sky. The hymn says:

तस्माद्यज्ञात्सर्वहुतः सम्भृतं पृषदाज्यम् | पशूस्तांश्चक्रे वायव्यानारण्यान्ग्राम्याश्च ये ||

From that great sacrifice, the all-pervading Purusha, was produced the clarified butter. He formed the animals of the air, the forest, and the village.

- Yajurveda 32.3

In the Yajurveda, there is a prayer (32.3) that invokes the supreme Lord (Ishana) who has five faces and who controls the five elements. The prayer says:

यो देवेभ्य आतपति यो देवानां पुरोहितः | पूर्वो यो देवेभ्यो जातः नमो रुचाय ब्राह्माय ||

He who is the source of light for the gods, he who is the priest of the gods, he who was born before the gods, salutations to him who is radiant and who is Brahman.

- Yogavashishta 6.2.125:

In the Yogavashishta, there is a story (6.2.125) of how the sage Vashishta shows his disciple Rama the Cosmic Form of the Lord (Vishnu) within himself. The story says:

अथ वसिष्ठो रामाय दर्शयामास तत्स्वयम् |विष्णोर्विश्वरूपं च तदन्तर्गतमात्मनि ||

Then Vashishta showed Rama himself, and the universal form of Vishnu, which was within his own Self.
