Ruthless Sinner by AJ Adams

A Zeta Cartel Novel #6

 Compelling story that left me flipping pages as quickly as possible as I eagerly read each word to find out what would happen next. I love this author’s glimpse into a life I would never personally enter but thoroughly enjoy hearing about and enjoying vicariously.

 With a gritty beginning I was hooked as I met Coop and those he was with. I was grateful he survived and then managed to thrive as he moved forward in life. Meeting Spirit was interesting…a “naughty” girl with a heart of gold and, in the end, a perfect partner for Coop just as he was for her.

 What I liked:

* The unflinching look at child slave labor

* Coop: strong, silent, lethal, scarred and yet still able to care and see his own version of right and wrong

* Spirit: strong, resilient, positive, caring – despite what happened in her life

* Seeing old friends from the Zeta Cartel

* Rip’s look-see to help Coop and the Zeta team find The Torturer

* That there were few hints prior to the unveiling of The Torturer’s identity

* Being reminded that no matter what a person may suffer it does not have to define them

* Realizing how resilient some people truly are

* That love can thrive in the darkest times

* That the bad guys were dealt with

* Pretty much all of it…

 What I did not like:

* The treatment of Spirit by more than one person in the story

* The treatment of Cooper, Thando and those he was with in the beginning

* Having to say goodbye at the end of the book

Video game concept

A “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot”-style, first-person shooter focused on Frank Castle/The Punisher. The game will be extremely dark, drawing elements from the Punisher MAX books and the Netflix Punisher series. Details of this game:

1) This will be a “modern” take on the Punisher, so at least one level will be a flashback to Frank’s tours in Afghanistan. Enemy faction will be the Taliban.

2) One level will be the massacre of the Castle family. Although Frank does his best to kill the gangsters trying to kill his family, the end of the level has Frank getting shot and being put into a coma.

3) The main enemy faction is a drug cartel that is responsible for the deaths of the Castle family (they’re meant to be a parallel to real-life cartels, like Los Zetas or Sinaloa). Other enemy factions that Frank comes across includes the Taliban, far-right white supremacist militias (Neo-Nazis/Neo-Confederates), biker gangs (real life parallel would be the Hells Angels), the American Mafia, the Yakuza, and a gang meant to represent the Bloods/Crips. 

4) David Lieberman/Micro is the deuteragonist. Kathryn O’Brien (a major character from the Punisher MAX series) is the tritagonist and Frank’s love interest.

5) This game POSSIBLY takes place in the same world as Spider-Man PS4 and Miles Morales. 

6) Billy Russo is the secondary antagonist of the game. In this universe, he is a former Delta Force operative-turned-mercenary hired by the drug cartel. Russo survives the game but his face is left badly disfigured by Frank (I imagine that Frank tossed him face first into a greenhouse, expecting him to die). The next game will feature Russo as the main antagonist, under his “Jigsaw” persona.

7) Even though this is separate canon from the MCU, Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank.

U.S. refugee admissions (Foreign Policy) The number of refugees allowed into the United States in the coming year will be at its lowest level in modern times, after the White House announced just 15,000 refugees would be allowed settle in the country next year. According to a White House memo, 5,000 of those places will go to refugees facing religious persecution, 4,000 are reserved for refugees from Iraq who helped the United States, and 1,000 for refugees from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras; 5,000 open slots remain, although refugees from Somalia, Syria, and Yemen are banned unless they can meet special humanitarian criteria. The future of U.S. refugee policy hangs on Tuesday’s vote: Former Vice President Joe Biden has promised to increase annual refugee admissions to 125,000, while the Guardian reports that a second Trump administration would seek to slash such admissions to zero.

Days From Election, Police Killing of Black Man Roils Philadelphia (NYT) There is a grim familiarity to it all. In the final days of a bitter election, it is a reprise of the terrible images that the country has come to know all too well this year: The shaky cellphone video, the abrupt death of a Black man at the hands of the police. The howls of grief at the scene. The protests that formed immediately. The looting of stores that lasted late into the night. It began on Monday, when two officers confronted Walter Wallace Jr., a 27-year-old with a history of mental health problems. A lawyer for the family said that he was experiencing a crisis that day and that the family told officers about it when they arrived at the scene. In an encounter captured in video that appeared on social media, Mr. Wallace is seen walking into the street in the direction of the officers, who back away and aim their guns at him. Someone yells repeatedly at Mr. Wallace to “put the knife down.” The officers then fire multiple rounds. After Mr. Wallace falls to the ground, his mother screams and rushes to his body. Mr. Wallace later died of his wounds at a nearby hospital, and the neighborhood exploded in rage. In the days since, dozens have been arrested, cars have been burned and 53 officers have been hurt. On Tuesday, Gov. Tom Wolf called in the National Guard. On Wednesday, the city declared a 9 p.m. curfew. Zeta soaks Southeast after swamping Gulf Coast; 6 dead (AP) Millions of people were without power and at least six were dead Thursday after Hurricane Zeta slammed into Louisiana and made a beeline across the South, leaving shattered buildings, thousands of downed trees and fresh anguish over a record-setting hurricane season. From the bayous of the Gulf Coast to Atlanta and beyond, Southerners used to dealing with dangerous weather were left to pick up the pieces once again. In Atlanta and New Orleans, drivers dodged trees in roads and navigated intersections without traffic signals. As many as 2.6 million homes and businesses lost power across seven states, but the lights were coming back on slowly. Many Cubans hope US election will lead to renewed ties (AP) Not so long ago the tables at Woow!!! restaurant in Havana were filled with tourists ordering mojitos and plates of grilled octopus. But as President Donald Trump rolled back Obama-era measures opening Cuba relations, the restaurant grew increasingly empty. Now entrepreneurs like Orlando Alain Rodríguez are keeping a close eye on the upcoming U.S. presidential election in hope that a win by Democratic challenger Joe Biden might lead to a renewal of a relationship cut short. “The Trump era has been like a virus to tourism in Cuba,” said Rodríguez, the owner of Woow!!! and another restaurant feeling the pinch. Few countries in Latin America have seen as dramatic a change in U.S. relations during the Trump administration or have as much at stake in who wins the election. Former President Barack Obama restored diplomatic relations, loosened restrictions on travel and remittances and became the first U.S. chief of state to set foot in the island in 88 years. The result was a boom in tourism and business growth on the island. Trump has steadily reversed that opening, tapping into the frustrations of a wide segment of the Cuban American community that does not support opening relations while a communist government remains in power. The hospitals are filling up, as the cafes are shutting down. Governments are threatening to cancel Christmas gatherings. As new coronavirus infections surge again in Europe, breaking daily records, the mood is growing dark on the continent—and it’s not even November. The reprieve of summer feels a long time ago, and Europe is entering a serious funk. Germany and France announced national lockdowns Wednesday to try to get the virus under control. The new measures are less restrictive than in the spring, and yet they face more resistance. People are no longer so willing to remain confined to their homes, venturing onto balconies in the evenings to applaud health-care workers. Many people remain scared of covid-19, but they are exhausted and frustrated—and growing angry and rebellious. 3 dead in church attack, plunging France into dual emergency (AP) A man armed with a knife attacked people inside a French church and killed three Thursday, prompting the government to raise its security alert status to the maximum level hours before a nationwide coronavirus lockdown. The attack in Mediterranean city of Nice was the third in two months in France that authorities have attributed to Muslim extremists, including the beheading of a teacher. It comes during a growing furor over caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad that were republished in recent months by the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo—renewing vociferous debate in France and the Muslim world over the depictions that Muslims consider offensive but are protected by French free speech laws. Other confrontations and attacks were reported Thursday in the southern French city of Avignon and in the Saudi city of Jiddah, but it was not immediately clear if they were linked to the attack in Nice.

Germany does not believe Thai king has breached state business ban: source (Reuters) Germany does not believe that Thailand’s king has so far breached its ban on conducting politics while staying there, a parliamentary source said on Wednesday, after lawmakers were briefed by the government. Following a meeting of the Bundestag’s foreign affairs committee, the source said the government had briefed lawmakers that it believes the king is permitted to make occasional decisions, as long as he does not continuously conduct business from German soil. When asked about the status of the king, the government told the committee he has a visa that allows him to stay in Germany for several years as a private person and also enjoys diplomatic immunity as a head of state. Thailand’s political crisis has made the king’s presence a challenge for Germany, but revoking the visa of a visiting head of state could cause a major diplomatic incident.

China’s New Confidence on Display (Foreign Policy) The Chinese leadership is currently meeting in Beijing to set economic and political goals for the next five years. In the run-up to the plenum, speeches by President Xi Jinping and others have demonstrated a bold confidence that this is China’s moment. As economic policymaker Liu He put it, “Bad things are turning into good ones.” Despite the damage to China’s global reputation this year, its leaders seem to believe that Western economic weakness and mishandling of the coronavirus have created opportunities. That may be true, but it may also encourage dangerous overconfidence, as happened in 2009, when the Chinese leadership was convinced the economic crisis had significantly weakened Washington. That overconfidence is most frightening when it comes to Taiwan, where recent saber-rattling has again raised the specter of an invasion. Distinguishing signal from noise on Taiwan is difficult, but the traditional restraints on Chinese military action—fear of U.S. intervention, reputational damage, and corruption inside the People’s Liberation Army—have weakened. La década oscura de Los Zetas: el ascenso y la caída del cartel más implacable de la historia

Los Zetas. A principios de la década de 2000, cuando Los Zetas se convirtieron en la facción armada de Osiel Cárdenas Guillén, no parecían diferentes de sus predecesores o contemporáneos. Sin embargo, desde el principio, hubo indicios de que no se trataba de una organización ordinaria. Nacieron en el Grupo Aeromóvil de Fuerzas Especiales (GAFE), que ya no existe en el ejército mexicano, y en la famosa Escuela Americana operada por el Ejército de los Estados Unidos, lo que les da un ambiente diferente al de sus pares. Desde finales de los años noventa algunos capos mexicanos empezaron a reclutar ex militares y antiguos policías federales para contratarlos como sus guardaespaldas. Noticias Internacionales. El guardaespaldas es la única persona con un arma, por lo que el capo no puede ser acusado de portar un arma. Algunos de ellos fueron Alejandro Lucio Morales, Z-2; Heriberto Lazcano, Z-3 o el Lazca; Rogelio González Pizaña, Z-4; Jaime González Durán, Z-5 o El Hummer; Matero Díaz López, Z-6 o Comandante Mateo; Jesús Enrique Rejón Aguilar, Z-7o El Mamito; Óscar Guerrero Silva, Z-8 o El Winnie Pooh; Galindo Mellado Cruz, Z-9; Omar Lormendez Pitalua, Z-10; Flavio Méndez Santiago, Z-11; Luis Reyes Enríquez, Z-12 o El Rex; Raúl Hernández Barrón, Z-13 y Efraín Teodoro Torres, Z-14. De esta manera el surgimiento de Los Zetas también supuso un nuevo desafío: los elementos más capacitados de las Fuerzas Armadas ya no solo eran incapaces de contener la rápida expansión del narcotráfico en México, ahora también se habían pasado al bando contrario. El nombre de la organización tiene que ver con las claves de radio que utilizaban en aquel entonces y en las que la letra “Z” tenía varios significados. Uno de ellos era el color del uniforme que vestían como cuerpo de élite: ”Azul Zeta”. Con la muerte de Guzmán Decena en 2002 y la detención de Osiel Cárdenas al año siguiente, los Zetas se quedaron sin un patrón que los supervisara directamente. Este vacío de poder provocó el ascenso de Heriberto Lazcano como líder de la organización. Durante este período, Los Zetas defendieron a sangre y fuego la plaza de Tamaulipas, su bastión principal, ya que Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán y el Cartel de Sinaloa amenazaban con arrebatarles el control. A partir de entonces los Zetas cobraron un nuevo significado, convirtiéndose en uno de los grupos criminales más temidos en todos el país. El lugar donde se establecieron con mayor fuerza fue en la ciudad de Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, en la frontera con Estados Unidos. A finales de 2006, el ex presidente Felipe Calderón inició la Guerra contra el Narco, y aunque su gobierno se centró al principio en la Familia Michoacana, no pasó mucho tiempo para que una buena parte del ejército se enfocara en Los Zetas. Al final del mandato calderonista, los funcionarios de seguridad afirmaban a la prensa que los Zetas eran la principal prioridad del gobierno. En 2010, cuando ya se habían establecido en al menos 405 municipios de México, se desligaron del Cártel del Golfo e iniciaron una guerra que afectó a todo el estado de Tamaulipas, aunque principalmente a La Frontera Chica. Esta disputa entre los dos bandos propició más enfrentamientos, narcobloqueos y sobre todo un aumento repentino de la violencia y la inseguridad en la región. El clima hostil obligó a muchos a desplazarse. Heriberto Lazcano, entonces líder de Los Zetas, tenía un sicario al que le guardaba cierto favoritismo con respecto al resto. Ese hombre era Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales, alias el “Z-40”, quien debido a su fama de asesino implacable ascendió rápidamente en la organización. Alfredo Corchado, periodista del Dallas Morning News, aseguró que el Z-40 mordía el corazón sus víctimas cuando aún estaban vivas con la firme creencia de que eso lo haría invencible y reclutaba a sus sicarios obligándoles a disparar a una persona al azar.

El declive de Los Zetas

Asimismo, los Zetas respondieron a la ofensiva del gobierno de la misma manera, aunque el costo de reforzar su notoriedad fue a través de una serie de provocaciones que a la larga resultaron perjudiciales para la propia organización pues desataron una persecución contra ellos y la caída de varios de sus líderes. Una de ellas fue cuando lanzaron granadas en el centro de Morelia durante los festejos por la Independencia de México en Michoacán. El atentado dejó ocho muertos y 132 heridos, más de 20 de gravedad. También incendiaron un casino en Monterrey y acribillaron a sus asistentes. La cifra total de muertos fue de 52 y algunos medios de comunicación lo calificaron como el peor ataque en la historia del México moderno. Asimismo fueron los responsables de la muerte masiva de 72 inmigrantes en agosto de 2010 en San Fernando, Tamaulipas. Y en 2011, a raíz de una supuesta venganza por la filtración de información sensible a la Administración para el Control de Drogas (DEA), encabezaron una masacre en la comunidad de Allende, Coahuila, Después de que Heriberto Lazcano fuera asesinado en un enfrentamiento con la Marina en octubre de 2012, Treviño Morales tomó el control de Los Zetas. Cuando se interceptó el Z-40, se produjeron varias fracturas en su estructura. Así se mantuvieron por algunos años, hasta que algunos de los fundadores de la organización que habían sido encarcelados en el pasado, comenzaron a salir de prisión. Algunos de ellos fueron el “El Rex” (o “Z12”) y el “Bravo 01”, quienes fundaron el cártel de los Zetas “Vieja Escuela”, y cuyo objetivo principal era quitarle el control a los Treviño Morales. Es en ese momento cuando la organización se parte en dos y surgen los de la Vieja Escuela y el Cártel del Noreste. La presión del gobierno y de las bandas rivales empezó a dar frutos. Luego de la detención en 2015 de Omar Treviño Morales, el Z-42, esta organización criminal comenzó a disminuir su poderío hasta tener control únicamente en Tamaulipas. Actualmente todos los fundadores de Los Zetas están muertos o en prisión. Sin embargo, en su época de mayor prosperidad llegaron a operar en al menos 22 de las 32 entidades mexicanas y a tener presencia en Estados Unidos, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, América del Sur, Europa y Asia. Expandieron sus actividades ilegales más allá del tráfico de drogas, pues también cometieron extorsiones, robos, asesinatos, secuestros masivos, tráfico de personas y robo de combustible. Sergio Villarreal Barragán (A.K.A. El Grande) - Cartel de los Beltrán Leyva - Mafia México

Is a ex Mexican federal police officer who then worked as a lieutenant for Arturo Beltrán Leyva of the criminal organization called the Beltrán Leyva Cartel. He got his name El Grande ("The Big One") because he is 6 feet 7 inches (2.01 m) tall. 

Villarreal Barragán was born in Torreón, Coahuila on September 21, 1969. He began his criminal career as a car thief in the state of Coahuila, and in 1990 at age 20, he was admitted to the Coahuila Judicial Police force. Several years later in 1993 , he was admitted to the Federal Police, which was led by the office National Security Commission and was stationed at Nuevo Laredo. Villarreal Barragán was then stationed at Reynosa, Tamaulipas, where he worked until 1996, when he established a business relationship with the Juárez Cartel.

Between the years 2007 and 2010, Villarreal Barragán left the Juárez organization to work along with the Gulf Cartel and for Los Zetas, but later incorporated into the Sinaloa Cartel, commanding a criminal cell of the Beltrán Leyva Cartel.

Allegedly, he was hired by the Beltrán Leyva Cartel and by 2007 he rose to the rank of lieutenant for Arturo Beltrán Leyva. Following Arturo's death in December 2009 during a shootout with Marines, infighting broke out for the control of the Beltrán Leyva Cartel. One faction is led by lieutenants Édgar Valdez Villarreal and Gerardo Alvarez-Vazquez, while the other is led by the current cartel leader Héctor Beltrán Leyva and his 'enforcer' lieutenant, Sergio Villarreal Barragán.

Tras la muerte de Arturo en diciembre de 2009 durante un tiroteo con los marines, estallaron las luchas internas por el control del Cartel de Beltrán Leyva. Una facción está dirigida por los tenientes Édgar Valdez Villarreal y Gerardo Alvarez-Vázquez, mientras que la otra está dirigida por el actual líder del cartel Héctor Beltrán Leyva y su lugarteniente 'ejecutor', Sergio Villarreal Barragán.

Al menos 6 muertos en choque entre policías y criminales en Coahuila

Al menos seis personas fallecieron en un enfrentamiento entre supuestos criminales con policías del estado de Coahuila, informaron este lunes fuentes oficiales. "La noche de este domingo 19 de mayo, en una acción de seguridad, elementos de Fuerza Coahuila enfrentaron a un grupo de civiles armados en un camino vecinal cercano a la comunidad de Mineral La Florida, en el Municipio de Múzquiz, que hasta el momento arroja un saldo de seis probables delincuentes abatidos", informó Jesús Carranza, portavoz de la Fiscalía de Coahuila. Carranza detalló que las autoridades recibieron el reporte sobre los hechos a las 19.00 hora local del domingo (00.00 del lunes). Tras recibir la información, ordenaron una intensa búsqueda a la que se sumaron un helicóptero de la Secretaría de Marina y agentes de la Policía Federal, así como miembros del Ejército. "Personal del área de Servicios Periciales se encuentra en este momento levantando evidencias. Sin embargo, por la nula iluminación así como por las complejas condiciones del terreno en donde sucedieron los hechos, aún no concluyen, por lo que no se puede determinar todavía el saldo final", precisó Carranza. Los informes de la policía del municipio de Múzquiz, ubicado a unos 100 kilómetros al sur de la frontera con Estados Unidos, precisaron que una caravana de vehículos con hombres armados emboscó a varias patrullas de la corporación estatal Fuerza Coahuila y de la Policía Investigadora de la Fiscalía. Las autoridades estatales no han informado sobre el número total de heridos y sólo confirmaron que el comandante de la Policía Investigadora Yunior Marcelino recibió un impacto de bala en la cabeza y debido a la gravedad de la herida fue trasladado en una aeronave a la ciudad de Saltillo, capital de Coahuila. Una fuente de la Policía de Proximidad de Múzquiz mencionó que la cifra total de muertos podría alcanzar los veinte, entre delincuentes y miembros de la corporaciones policiales del estado. Ο George (Johnny Depp) ζει με τους γονείς του στο Weymouth της Μασαχουσέτης όταν η εμπλοκή του με τα ναρκωτικά αρχίζει να εισχωρεί στην ζωή του. Με τις γνωριμίες και τις συναναστροφές του ο George είναι δύσκολο να ξεφύγει και ακολουθείται από μία σειρά περιπετειών. Το σενάριο της συγκεκριμένης ταινίας βασίζεται στο βιβλίο "Blow: How a Small Town Boy Made $100 Million with the Medellin Cocaine Cartel and Lost It All" του Bruce Porter. 5. Εντάσσεται στις αστυνομικές περιπέτειες που μπορεί να μην είναι τόσο γνωστές, αλλά στον χώρο του κινηματογράφου έκλεψαν τις εντυπώσεις. Μέχρι και σήμερα θεωρείται μία από τις σημαντικότερες αμερικανικές ταινίες κάτι που το Αμερικανικό Ινστιτούτο Κινηματογράφου ανέδειξε αφού την κατέταξε στην 70η θέση στη λίστα με τα 100 αριστουργήματα του αμερικανικού κινηματογράφου. Ο εκπληκτικός Gene Hackman (κέρδισε το Όσκαρ Α' ανδρικού ρόλου) πρωταγωνιστεί μαζί με τον Rob Schneider και καταλαμβάνουν την θέση δύο αστυνομικών της Δίωξης ναρκωτικών της Νέας Υόρκης, οι οποίοι προσπαθούν να εμποδίσουν ένα τεράστιο φορτίο ηρωίνης που ''απειλεί'' την Γαλλία. Προτάθηκε για 4 Όσκαρ, συγκίνησε αλλά και απέσπασε μοναδικές κριτικές από κριτικούς και περιοδικά μεταξύ των οποίων ήταν το Time, το Empire και η Guardian. Πρόκειται για ένα φιλμ γυρισμένο στις φτωχογειτονιές του Ριο Ντε Τζανέιρο, η οποία περιγράφει την ζωή δύο μακροχρόνιων φίλων που μετέπειτα διάλεξαν διαφορετική πορεία στην ζωή τους. Ο ένας και πιο τυχερός έγινε φωτογράφος, ενώ ο δεύτερος μέλος συμμορίας και έμπορος ναρκωτικών. Όλα είναι θέμα πορείας και ευκαιριών. 7. Τhe Basketball Diaries (1995)

Πολλοί είναι αυτοί που ακολούθησαν αυτή την πορεία λόγω των φιλοδοξιών που είχαν και της λάθος καθοδήγησης. Ο Leonardo Dicaprio σε έναν ρόλο έκπληξη, υποδυόμενος έναν νεαρό ανερχόμενο αστέρα του μπάσκετ. Βασίζεται στην αυτοβιογραφία του Jim Carrol που στα σχολικά του χρόνια εντασσόταν στην ομάδα μπάσκετ του σχολείου του αλλά μετέπειτα έμπλεξε με τα ναρκωτικά. Η ταινία δείχνει το πώς ένα παιδί με φιλοδοξίες και όνειρα στον χώρο του μπάσκετ κατέληξε να διωχθεί από το σπίτι του και, να μαλώσει με την μητέρα και να μπλέξει στον κακόφημο δρόμο των ναρκωτικών. 8. Saving Grace (2000)

Η Brenda Blethyn μπαίνει στον ρόλο μίας χήρας στην Αγγλία, η οποία αντιμετωπίζει ορισμένα σοβαρά οικονομικά προβλήματα. Όλοι ξέρουμε όμως ότι δύσκολα μία γυναίκα το βάζει κάτω. Έτσι, η εν λόγω κυρία αποφασίζει να καλλιεργήσει μαριχουάνα στο θερμοκήπιό της. Όλη η σκηνοθεσία ακολουθεί τις προσπάθειες της να μην την καταλάβουν οι γείτονές της και να μπορέσει να σταθεί στα πόδια της. Μία ταινία που σίγουρα δεν πρέπει να χάσετε. 9. Pineapple Express(2008)

Ο Dale Denton είναι ένας 25χρόνος συνήθης καπνιστής μαριχουάνας, ο οποίος γνωρίζει και συναναστρέφεται με κόσμο διαφορετικών κύκλων. Εκτός όμως από το άγχος της ανακάλυψης του για το εν λόγω ναρκωτικό, ο Dale βρίσκεται πλέον αντιμέτωπος και με έναν διεφθαρμένο αστυνομικό ο οποίος μπροστά στα μάτια του πρώτου, σκότωσε εν ψυχρώ.
