Broadway Divas Tournament: Round 1A
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(this poll breaks my heart)
Six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald (1970) holds the record for most Tony acting awards a person has ever won. She is one of five actors to be nominated across all four respective acting categories and the only person to win every one (and the only actress out of the three who is still living...). Her stage work includes: Ragtime (1998), Porgy and Bess (2012), and Lady Day at Emmerson's Bar and Grill (2014) among so much more on Broadway and far beyond. All this woman needs is an Oscar to EGOT, and what are we as a society doing to make that happen? Audra debuted on Broadway as a replacement in The Secret Garden, and yes, Rebecca Luker was still there.
Rebecca Luker (1961-2020) was known for her luminous work in The Secret Garden (1991) as the original Lily Craven, The Sound of Music (1998), and The Music Man (2000) where she was nominated for a Tony alongside an iconic lineup (Audra McDonald, Marin Mazzie, Toni Collette, and Heather Headley). She had an extensive regional theatre and concert career and had four solo recordings. In February 2020, she was diagnosed with ALS, and by October her beautiful voice was all but gone. Rebecca passed away in December of 2020. She was 59.
PROPAGANDA AND MEDIA UNDER CUT:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
"Is any propaganda really needed? Is saying six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald not enough for you people? Just listen to this woman's voice and tell me your soul doesn't ascend to a higher plane of being. And just listen to her do Lady Day. Audra McDonald, what the fuck? How are you this talented? Audra McDonald is THE Broadway Diva and a true triple threat. She has ten Tony nominations to her name, and is right up there alongside the legends that were Julie Harris and Chita Rivera."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
"True operatic sopranos are a dying breed in the most literal sense. Rebecca was a gift to this world, and I miss her dearly. Her Marian in The Music Man was everything, and I refuse to acknowledge that we live in a world where we had her revive Barbara Cook's role after over forty years, only to get a second revival barely two decades later with a fucking belter in a soprano role. Go listen to Rebecca Luker's "My White Knight" and cleanse yourself, and watch how she somehow finds the bootleg camera and sings right to it."

If you dig into Orwell’s work, you find a lot of sentences about flowers and pleasures and the natural world. If you read enough of those sentences the grey portrait turns to colour, and if you look for these passages, even his last masterpiece, Nineteen Eighty-Four, changes complexion. These sentences are less ringing, less prophetic than the political analysis, but they are not unrelated to it, and they have their own poetics, their own power, and their own politics. Nature itself is immensely political, in how we imagine, interact with, and impact it, though this was not much recognised in his era. The German corpse has something to tell us, and it’s about war and nationalism, and about an encounter with death. The flowers also have something to tell us in that sentence, perhaps that there’s something beyond the war, just as there’s cyclical time, the time of nature as seasons and processes imagined until recently as outside historical time. A human being lives in both, as a political actor, a citizen of this place or that, a seat for a mind with opinions and beliefs, but also as a biological entity, eating and sleeping and excreting and breeding, ephemeral like flowers. Emotions arise from bodily fears and desires, but also from ideas and commitments and culture.

What are other australian actors/tresses you like that you don't usually talk about?
hello! gonna keep the obvious big names rn (robbies, hemsworths, jackmans, snook) outta this list. stick with ppl i think deserve more hype!
steph tisdel! she's an Aboriginal comedian and her on-screen presence is utterly delightful. her comedy is so brilliantly observational, nerdy and human without being fatphobic. also, I need her and rob collins in a rom-com NOW their chemistry in season 2 of total control made me insane!!!!!
claudia doumit! one of the most beautiful women on earth. most people know her as victoria neuman in the boys and don't realise she's lebanese-australian. i think its really sad she couldn't book work here at home because she's so fucking good!
rebecca breeds! my girl becs was CRIMINALLY overlooked for an emmy a few years ago for her performance as clarice sterling in clarice!! she was so fucking good!!! aside from that, she's in one of my fave Australian comedy films three summers (2017). she has an insaneeeee range she deserves so much hype!
nakkiah lui! more a writer than an actor but if you haven't seen preppers 2021, go watch it now! she's a huge inspiration to me honestly! same for miranda tapsel!
keiynan lonsdale!! most ppl probs don't know that Bram from the love simon movie is Australian and they should because keiynan is bonkers multi-talented. dude makes drops bop after bop on spotify, dances like a maniac, and is such a warm unforgettable screen presence. i am once again begging people to watch my fake boyfriend 2022 on amazon
pallavi sharda! you just don't understand how much i need her to play chloe fraser in a proper uncharted film adaptation. also, pleaseeeeeeee watch wedding season 2022 on Netflix its such a sweet rom-com and i am in love with her
remy hii! another aus actor i just love seeing in things because he was INSANE RANGE. i've seen him thrive in rom-coms, period dramas, crime, whatever, he's a stand out. and he often does work at home too which i love! i got to see him on stage in sydney last year in the tenant of wildfell hall and he was so fun!
geraldine viswanathan! that's my wifeeeee. i know i mention her a lot already but you don't understand she's from the same city as me i love her and she's so talented and she means so much to me!
hunter paige-lochard! incredible Aboriginal actor who really shoulda blown up after leading 2 seasons of Cleverman. he's so handsome and i was ECSTATIC to see him in the newsreader season 2 trailer!
rob collins! i absolutely have talked about this man but you will hear it again!!! please watch firebite on SBS on Demand! but do not watch queen of oz!
i also have particular love in my heart for bigish name actors in a lot of stuff that aren't as well known like miranda otto, david wenham, noah taylor, eric bana, rose byrne, etc but they need no introductions!! also, please just watch Black Comedy on ABC and assume i stan every Blak actor in it because i do.

The Gilded Age's Broadway Divas: Susan Blane (Laura Benanti)
Newly widowed Susan Blane has one purpose on this show, and apparently it's to get railed by a younger man and then get chased off by his mother and have her heart broken. Again. And then we never see her again. The end. Justice for Susan.
Tumblr media
Now, I will preface this by saying that Laura Benanti lands outside my scope of interest--she's a little young for my tastes. However, I've always been amused and delighted by her performances, and I appreciate how raunchy she is, even if the quirkyness can be a bit...much at times. Laura is a five-time Tony nominee who won in 2008 for her role as Louise in Gypsy alongside Patti LuPone.
Starting off young, Laura Benanti made her Broadway debut at eighteen as the understudy to the late great Rebecca Luker's Maria in The Sound of Music, and eventually replaced her. She's had roles as Cinderella in Into the Woods (2002), Candela in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and Eileen Sherwood in the Encores! Wonderful Town opposite Donna Murphy, our beloved Mrs. Astor.
#1: "Wouldn't it be Loverly?" My Fair Lady (2018)
youtube
Lincoln Center is soprano territory. As one of the classical soprano dying breeds, Laura took over the role of Eliza Doolittle from Lauren Ambrose in the recent Broadway Revival. Her Eliza was older than most (Laura was on the cusp of forty when the took the role), and a delight, I must say. This show is, of course, a classic, and as such is dated like a classic. The production did attempt to give Eliza more agency, and it seemed to go over fine.
As Susan Blane spends most of her time in the white clothing of Newport, I just kept thinking about the Ascot Gavotte the entire time. The ladies of Newport would fit right in at the racetrack.
Fellow soprano Kelli O'Hara has also played this role in a different Lincoln Center theater back in 2007.
#2: "Model Behavior," Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (2011)
youtube
A critical failure despite its stellar cast, this show closed in less than three months, but nevertheless earned Laura a Tony nomination and a Drama Desk. Watching this masterclass of a breakdown, you can see why. Set in 80s Spain, the show features Candela, played by Laura, who's freaking out because her romantic interest might be a terrorist. But other than that, he's perfect. She sure knows how to pick 'em...
Tension behind the scenes between leading lady Sherie Rene Scott and Diva Patti LuPone made things a little...well. Anyway.
#3: Laura Benanti & The Skivvies - Passion Massion (2014)
youtube
So, I'm gonna be honest, I was going to go with a different Skivvies video, but then I saw Sexy Fosca, and I am baffled, horrified, and delighted.
The Skivvies is a hilarious cabaret group that performs, as you can imagine, in their underwear, and they have guest singers come on, also dressed in lingerie and other underthings. Most of their guest singers are working theatre actors, but sometimes we get Laura Benanti. She was a Skivvies regular for a time, and has a collection of comedic clips you can all enjoy on your own time.
#4: "Vanilla Ice Cream," She Loves Me (2015)
youtube
Broadway sopranos pass around roles like hot potatoes. Kelli O'Hara played Amalia Balash in the 2001 concert, and while some members of the cast transferred to Broadway five years later, Kelli was already in The King and I, and since Broadway has like four sopranos of this age that they rotate around, enter Laura Benanti. Though the show and her role was largely overshadowed by a little show called Hamilton that season, the production has a PBS proshot I'd recommend watching.
She Loves Me is yet another adaptation of an early 30s Hungarian play that was also the inspiration for You've Got Mail, so if you've seen that, you know the plot of this. (Side note: Gilded Age's Katie Finneran had a small role as Maureen, the Nanny who runs off with the kids' mother(?) I've never seen it, and that plot wasn't in the musical.)
#5: "So Many People," Saturday Night (2010)
youtube
If you thought we were going to get through Laura Benanti without a Sondheim, guess again. While Audra McDonald and Donna Murphy were part of the Ladies in Red, Laura Benanti instead gave us the other oft-sung cabaret number of Saturday Night in the Joanna Gleason dress, only reversed in color. Look it up and you'll see what I mean.
Laura was the last person to perform before the Ladies in Red segment, and thus isn't often remembered. But I remember. (Incidentally, "I Remember" is the song she sang for the Sondheim 90th.)

On November 9, 1960, Larch and Janiss appeared as Ben and Sarah Harness in the episode "The Cathy Eckhart Story" of Wagon Train, with Susan Oliver in the starring role. Janiss' last roles were in the 1978 CBS television film First, You Cry, a story about breast cancer starring Mary Tyler Moore, and in two 1979 CBS series appearances on Barnaby Jones with Buddy Ebsen  and House Calls, starring Wayne Rogers.  (Wikipedia)

Apple TV+'s 'Silo' is a look at a future of life underground
Tumblr media
NEW YORK
Dystopian storytelling goes underground this month with the arrival of Apple TV+'s “Silo,” a gripping, ambitious tale of Earth's last population living far below the surface.
Something terrible has happened to make the environment toxic so 10,000 people are hiding out in a massive, mile-deep underground silo until it's safe to come out. They grow food, maintain a huge generator for power and recycle everything.
But there's also a sense of dread down here, too, and secrets, mysteries and suspicious murders. What exactly happened to the Earth? What is this talk about a rebellion 140 years ago? Where are all the books? Can we trust what the government is saying?
“Life in the silo in many ways is pretty good. They’re part of this cause, which is basically just to stay alive until the day that it is safe to go outside. So they feel that they’ve got this common mission,” says creator and showrunner Graham Yost.
“Bu you just get a sense that there’s been a slight eugenic program to try and breed out curiosity, independence, obstreperousness — all those nasty human things. And you also get the sense that that’s not going to succeed.”
One of those rebelling is the 10-part series' heroine, a woman named Juliette, an engineer with a tragic childhood who seeks answers about the silo. She's played by Rebecca Ferguson, who says she was drawn to the work by its complexity.
Tumblr media
“If you and I right now have to be stuck in a silo and we have to evolve and survive, what would happen? It's sort of ‘Lord of the Flies’-meets-Greta Thunberg-meets-the people who question the status quo. It’ll be chaos,” says the actor, know for “Dune” and the “Mission: Impossible” films.
Based on Hugh Howey’s bestselling trilogy, “Silo” also stars Tim Robbins, Common, David Oyelowo, Rashida Jones and Will Patton. The first two episodes drop Friday.
This is world-building that slowly reveals itself. There are familiar things — tattoo artists, cops complaining about paperwork and ice trays — but also some different notes. Coins are square, suicide is a crime, and no one knows what a Pez dispenser is — a so-called relic of the before times and so illegal to own.
The series contains two opposite philosophic ideas — that mankind is good and it is society that makes it bad, and that men and women are born fundamentally bad and society tames them.
The people inside the silo are told that outside has become a wasteland and so they’ve formed a system of government that can charitably called a soft dictatorship, like East Germany in the 1980s. Anyone questioning the system is expelled — sent out into what seems to be a wasteland where everyone inside watches them crumple and die within minutes. Or do they?
“While life in the silo isn’t terrible, it’s not great. There’s something wrong and that battle between the truth and order is something that will play out over the whole series,” says Yost.
There have been previous attempts to get Howey’s books onto the big screen, but Yost thinks a 10-hour TV series is the best, including echoing the book by having Juliette only show up in the last few minutes of the first episode and take over.
“It’s bold. It makes sense,” says Ferguson. “It's a story being built up around a world where you don’t have to automatically see it through the lens of the character who’s going to pull you through it. I love that in storytelling.”
The look of life in the silo is carefully made, with most items made of metal and plastic, since growing trees for wood underground is hard. There is a grit and dirt, dim lighting and a grand curling staircase that connects the 144 concrete levels, with farming in the middle and working-class laborers in the bottom.
When audiences first meet Juliette, she is the chief engineer at the bottom keeping the generator running — “She pretty much keeps everyone in the silo alive,” an admirer says — and then events send her up to the top of the structure, where the bureaucrats and leaders are.
“We love the idea of the reluctant hero,” says Yost . “She didn’t set out to be a hero. It was thrust upon her begrudgingly. And that’s the kind of hero we like to write about.”
He hopes to be rewarded with a second, third and fourth season to flush out this underground world. He hopes fans will also turn to the books it is based on — with one request.
“As I told Hugh, I said, ‘I just want everyone who watches this show to read the books AFTER they finish watching the show.’”

Okay here it goes.
If we get another portrayal of Clarice Starling (and I do hope that we do someday) whoever is in charge needs to move away from the Silence film. I’m not hating on the film (it’s one of my favourites) nor am I hating on Jodie Foster (that performance is iconic) but it’s not fair on the actresses who play Clarice when adaptations keep trying to connect to the Silence film. Because then you have people going “nope, not as good as Jodie” in terms of acting and “hold on... how is this the same Clarice?” in terms of the writing. Julianne Moore and Rebecca Breeds did great jobs in their own way with what they were given but they weren’t allowed to stand on their own because their respective adaptations kept trying to connect back to the Silence film when they clearly weren’t acting like or written like the same Clarice from that film. Which from an acting standpoint is very smart. From a writing standpoint, it’s just confusing.
If Hannibal Lecter can have four different actors portraying him in four wildly different ways in wildly different canons and Will Graham can have three different actors portraying him in wildly different ways in wildly different canons, Clarice Starling should have that opportunity too.
Do something different and creative with our Agent Starling next time. That should be fun :)

Hi there! I think you are my first curious anon this year. Huzza!
Fair warning: This is probably going to be a rambling chaos.
From a narrative point of view? No. But I was also pretty sure that Aurora wasn't going to appear a week ago so what do I know?
Tristan has never exactly been a fan favorite character (except for me). At least with Aurora, Rebecca Breeds is coming from her starring role in Clarice. Oliver Ackland is big in Australia but not very well known internationally. I don't think the actor or the character would represent a big appeal for the general audience (Again: Except for me)
Then you have the small issue of being dead.
Resurrection has always been a thing in the TVD universe but each series approaches the issue differently.
Legacies has the Necromancer who can revive supernatural beings with unprecedented ease but not much is said about other individual witches or covens able to perform similar spells. That's likely a conscious choice because if they delve into the possibility too much it would generate questions that are difficult to answer.
Why isn't Hope, extraordinarily powerful as she is, seeking for a way to revive Hayley, Klaus or whoever else?
This universe also has a tendency to present bonds between siblings of unparalleled importance. But that doesn't mean the individual characters can't stand on their own.
It is perfectly possible to have a season with only Damon. He would just be incomplete without Stefan.
It is perfectly possible to have a season with only Klaus. He would just be incomplete without Elijah.
Even in Legacies itself. It is perfectly possible to have a season with only Lizzie or Josie. Same deal.
I would argue that Aurora and Tristan are the greatest case of this kind of bond. Elijah describes Tristan as pathologically devoted to his sister and he says that Aurora would do anything for Tristan. When Elijah Mikaelson, king of clinging to your brother no matter what, calls you out for how strangely close you are to your sibling, you know that you reached the top of the mountain.
Aurora doesn't require Tristan to cause tons of mischief. And I have no doubt he is applauding and cheering for her from whatever underworld he is in.
I would be concerned if they do return him to the stage. This is a different set of writers. I would be very cautious about what they might try to do with Tristan.
But would I feel cheated, insulted, mad as hell and heartbroken if they don't even acknowledge the relationship or mention it only to portray it in a negative light? 100%
And if Aurora feels like doing an intensive and fast course in the magical arts to reunite with his brother while she in in her new body....You know....Please go on?
Do I think they are going to bring him back? No.
Prove me wrong, Legacies.
No. Seriously.
Prove me wrong.
I dare you.
I double dare you.
Do it.
