It's the final day of the year and, like the final day of last year, we're on a plane flying away from home.

Last year it was family. An emergency. And we were on a plane the same morning we got the call. And we were on the ground within twelve hours of that call.

This time around there's no emergency, simply an urgency. A window in our schedule of which we can take advantage.

Last December 31 we were on a plane late morning arriving early afternoon in southern California. This time, we're on our way to the Netherlands. A nine hour fifty-five minute flight arcing over northern Canada, continuing over the south tip of Greenland, over the North Atlantic off the coast of Iceland nearest to Reykjavik, down over Scotland near Edinburgh, across the North Sea into Schiphol airport in Amsterdam.

The plane in which we're flying is an Airbus 330-300 and the pilot immediately adopted a nighttime attitude on take-off, requesting everyone close their blinds. We left the ground around 230 and by 4 you'd swear it was night already with assorted passengers adopting a bedtime attitude as they would be were we already in Holland.

Right now it's 7:12pm back home but feels like we're flying through the middle of the night. We're in the GMT -4 time zone where it's 11:12pm. By the time we cross into GMT -3, the good people living in most of Greenland will already be a half hour into the New Year (which actually happened 18 minutes later for us). Over in Holland (GMT +1) most everyone's already gone to bed since it's 4:12am there.

So that's us, running away from the sun. Running... running...

We're making this trip for much the same reason we did this very thing on a December 30 nearly twenty years ago: to say goodbye to someone we love.

When we land in another four hours, we'll enter an alternate reality, one in which we have a super large family that, hand to God, includes great grandkids. Not awesome grandkids. A fourth generation of our family as it presently exists.

There are a lot of us in Holland, it turns out.

And tonight we go to join them.

Journalists set to accompany Joe Biden on his first overseas trip as president were delayed on their outbound flight to England on Tuesday night — because of cicadas.

A swarm of the noisy insects ― members of the billions-strong Brood X that emerges across the United States every 17 years ― flew into the engines of the chartered White House press plane as it was on the runway at Dulles International Airport, reported The New York Times.

The pilots were forced to return the aircraft to the departure gate. The bugs were to blame, a spokesperson for Delta Air Lines told The Washington Post.

A different charter plane was set to leave early Wednesday, when Biden will also depart on Air Force One, reported CNN.

I would prefer the old 747 all times. I was seated on 71B (there are 72 in all) so it was in the back. The chairs feels smaller. I can not say in what way. I looking in seatmap guide they actually are wider. But feels smaller than old 747 anyway. The seat pitch is less too than 747. I think the difference is 2 inch less. All this together makes me feel that the all together seat comfort was better in 747. And not to forget, the seat recline is really bad! It was much more loud in the back of the plane than in the middle when I was walking around. Otherwiase the food was same thai airways style as always. The cognac is still some unknown brand that tastes shit. Same for the other liqour brands. They are all some unknown brands except the gin. But hard to complain if it is for free, But I would gladly pay for a cognac brand that is drinkable. The service is as always very good on the thai flights. There was a lot of heavy turbulens on the flight as well. I have never had that before when flying with 747. Can this be related to the aircraft?? OK, every seat has its own screen. I can not say anything about the movies i only listen to music and that was OK I guess. Not so many known artist there though so after I while I took out my ipod anyway.

In my opinion, the buying of 777 is a step down. The screen opinion is maybe nice for families with kids but nothing for me. Who want to see James Bond on a badly 10 inch screen? Not me anyway. Better try to sleep.
