J&J are attempting to extend their patent for bedaquiline, a lifesaving tuberculosis drug, for another 4 years. If this happens, the estimated 6 million people who will get TB in that time will not be able to afford it, and will consequently die.

  Je travaille sur un projet personnel sur les minorités dans l’ex-monde communiste d’Europe, projet qui verra la parution d’un livre en 2000 « vents d’Est » et qui obtiendra en 1997 à New York le prix Eugene Smith.

  Mon troisième voyage me conduit dans l’enclave arménienne du Haut-Karabakh, enclave découpée par Staline selon un adage connu : diviser pour mieux régner, et  dont les résultats amèneront jusqu’à aujourd’hui des conflits après la dislocation de l’empire soviétique. Je loge dans la maison de MSF à Stepanakert, capitale du Haut-Karabakh.

Lundi 4 avril 1994.

 En allant au centre ville je vois un autobus arrêté devant le cimetière, et beaucoup de monde s’y rendant. Je suis le mouvement.

 Les funérailles sont quotidiennes et regroupent à chaque fois plusieurs enterrements. Beaucoup de monde, beaucoup de pleurs. Beaucoup de femmes qui perdent leur mari, leur fiancé, leur fils. Dans tous le conflits, ce sont elles qui paient le plus lourd tribut. On l’oublie souvent.

 Un violoniste joue entre les tombes un ultime Adieu aux morts. Les bouteilles de vodka passent entre les mains des hommes. Le Haut-Karabakh est un bout de monde où personne ne va. J’aime ces endroits loin de tout, difficiles d’accès, où le temps s’est arrêté.

 Boris Babayan était le violoniste sur la photo. Il est mort le 10 décembre 2020 des suites du Covid. Il avait de graves problèmes cardiaques.

 Vingt six ans après ce voyage, la guerre est revenue sur le devant de l’actualité. D’après une source citée par le journal La Croix du 4 décembre 2020, le bilan total de ce dernier conflit de quarante-quatre jours entre l’Arménie et l’Azerbaïdjan aurait fait aux alentours de huit-mille morts.
