grace pls tell me what strictly come dancing and the discourse around it is 👀
hello akira welcome and do sit for I shall now tell you all about a classic british institution
Strictly Come Dancing (better known as 'Strictly') is a BBC dance contest similar to Dancing with the Stars (or Let's Dance is the German version I think?) Although Strictly was the original blueprint starting in 2004.
Basically, you've got 15 celebrities each paired with a professional Ballroom/Latin dancer, and every week they perform a routine to a Latin or Ballroom (or more recently, a 'couples choice' which can be either contemporary, theatre/jazz, or street/commercial). The public vote for their faves and the two with the least votes compete in a dance-off where the four judges (currently Craig Revel-Horwood, Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke, and Motsi Mabuse who is also a judge on Let's Dance I believe) save their favourite couple.
LOTS and lots of discourse over the years but the one I am referencing atm is that one of the celebrities this year is known terf Amanda Abbington, who has now pulled out for 'health reasons'. Obviously a lot of people wishing her well but the cynical part of me believes she's running away from the backlash she's been facing for being, well, a piece of shit
some other controversies include the notorious 'Strictly curse' where every year at least one celebrity will break up with their long term partner to start dating their dance partner instead. Some of these relationships end up lasting years but some fall apart before they even leave the show lmao
back in 2010(?) there was a lot of talk about ageism as one of the judges, Arlene Phillips, who was in her late 60s was replaced with 30 something year old Alesha Dixon but obvs the BBC deny that. I remember it received literally hundreds of complaints from viewers tho
Anton du beke also used a racial slur during rehearsals once which obvs got a lot of press attention but he's considered a national sweetheart so everyone forgot about that (!)
it also took them 16 years to allow same-sex couples to dance together and turned multiple celebrities down before 2020 for asking to dance with a same sex partner soooo
a classically problematic British reality show really. and one of the best to criticise because it is watched mainly by 60 year olds who can't cope with anyone pointing out its flaws, so it's a lot of fun to lurk in Facebook comments in particular

I’ve just re-watched the episode of Law & Order: UK that Jemma Redgrave was in and goddammit Jemma! I’d totally forgotten how good she looks all bewigged and gowned for court. Gah!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I mean, good gods, woman do you HAVE to be so fucking sexy?
Then she took her wig off and she STILL looked mighty fine!
Tumblr media
And she’s got that lil’ smug half smile on her face too.
And even in civvies, she looks excellent!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bloody hells bells, woman! Are you TRYING to kill me?!
Tumblr media
And this scene with Freema Agyeman’s Alesha Phillips contains probably my favourite line of the episode in which Alesha points out that Helena would up there ‘on her Zimmer frame’ still prosecuting if she was allowed.
Then there’s the final scene of Helena sharing a drink with opposing counsel, James Steel, again. He offers her a second glass of wine and she refuses saying she should’ve been home for the babysitter an hour ago. Then she offers to share a cab with him and he refuses saying he’s meeting Alesha. She tells James to be careful because Alesha’s single and over 30 (’tick tock, James’) - which is utterly hilarious because in the show James and Alesha aren’t a couple! I was one of quite a few people who did ship them, and the show eventually hinted at them getting together, but it didn’t actually happen. Yet here Helena is, apparently shipping them on behalf of the audience!
Tumblr media
Anyways, Jemma Redgrave is a sex goddess.

Content note for some gross victim blaming, explicit references to such as well as child sexual abuse.
“The knowledge of exactly what had happened to Thomas Cromwell was not explicitly written down by any who knew the story - that something happened was apparent in private letters and journals but it was never spelled out - likely because Thomas himself was a deeply private man and his loved ones wished to keep his secret out of respect. Perhaps more likely he also felt the shame of it - as did those around him. He was already a commoner - this further stigma would have been a further taint to a man in a shaky position.”
M.L.Featherstone-Jones ‘Properly English: The Decline Of The Idea Of England From Henry VIII to Prince Taran
“There is speculation that if Henry had known he would have discarded - he would have dropped Thomas immediately for having being touched before their marriage but sorry, no that’s fucking ridiculous. That’s my official legal opinion by the way, you can write it down as such. One of his letters to Thomas after Norwich was executed says “love, you bear no shame or taint for the reach of most wretched evil. My raven and my swan are the pure light of my soul” and then later we hear “the great evil that is done when the world sees shame in those who have been so vilely treated” and that’s before we take into account the Act Of Crimes Against The Person of 1540 and 1560 which if you read them is an extraordinarily modern and compassionate reform of the laws around sexual abuse and abuse of children.”
“No Shame My Love - Henrician England, Sexual Crimes & Law Reform” (A lecture by Alesha Phillips-Devlin-Steel QC at the A&W Museum)
Norwich kept records because offenders of that kind and depth keep records - he needed to have a testimony to his ‘genius even if it was only for the benefit of himself and history and he absolutely believed that history would vindicate him as a genius who deserved to reap rewards and repayment for his ‘charity’ which is something else we see - a justification, a defence - they wanted it, it’s love, they are so mature, so advanced - it was only what I was owed - it’s sickeningly repetitive and familiar. Norwich wasn’t unique - he only thought he was.
Monsters Of History Documentary: John Norwich
Most of the Earls writings were destroyed - but there were some that were missed, hidden in what was essentially a storage locker for centuries until they were discovered during works to replace the plumbing in a pub that had been built over the original Tudor Cellar - it is due to a fluke of conditions that we have these documents at all and they are not documents that leave any doubts as to what happened to Thomas Cromwell in his hands.
The rest of what we know about what happened and how King Henry and Queen Anne reacted we only know indirectly through piecing together allusions in letters and diaries - the rest is left to the realm of fiction.

Oh thanks =). It was my favorite show to watch during my freshman year of college -- Friday Nights on BBC America. But then timeslots changed, etc and I lost track of the show after Freema left
Alesha Phillips is my bae and the episode Alesha destroyed me
my friend @sapphichymns watched the US version of that episode to compare them and it didn’t nearly have the same hitting potential as Alesha did
not sure if that was because I love Freema though
I do know the writing to ‘Alesha’ was a woman though which makes me glad to be honest
