Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
Tumblr media
Birdman is one of the most unique pictures I’ve seen. It says so much without spelling any of it out. It’s unforgettable. Do I love it? I’m not sure if I can go that far. I do admire it as a whole and am fascinated by the elements that combine to make it, however. That's probably just as good.
Riggan Thomson (Michael Keaton) used to be the superhero movie guy before superhero movies were what they are now. For twenty years, he’s made every effort to distance himself from the role of “Birdman” and now, he's about to unveil his production of a play based on Raymond Carver’s “What We Talk About When We Talk About Love”. Unfortunately, things are not going well for the writer/producer and star, his mess of a daughter (Emma Stone) and the brilliant but egotistical actor he's hired to play against him (Edward Norton). The voice only Riggan can hear isn't helping. Oh, and he may or may not have superpowers.
Birdman is shot in one long, continuous take (some trickery was used, but essentially, yes). The camera becomes a character as it constantly follows the various people working on What We Talk about When We Talk About Love. It goes into dressing rooms so we can hear the actors complain about the technical difficulties and then will turn around and chase back after Riggan who is being torn asunder by Mike Shiner's latest antics - Norton plays the brilliant performer who takes everything just a little bit too far. It makes the film feel less like a film than a play, which gives it this weird metaphysical appeal. It’s actors playing actors in a movie about a play that’s shot like the behind-the-scenes of a play. Far from being a gimmick, this approach makes everything intense. As the premiere approaches, every mistake feels increasingly catastrophic. Everyone is worried that critics will blast the show. On top of that pressure, you grow frightened that an actor - I mean the real Norton, Stone or Keaton - will flub their line and ruin the entire take. You know it won’t happen. This is a movie, not a live stream, but that feeling is still there.
There’s so much to be said about what Birdman makes explicit, and what it doesn’t. There’s clearly a commentary about actors wanting to break free of their past roles and the way superheroes are the myths of the 21st century. Edward Norton played Bruce Banner/The Incredible Hulk, Keaton was Bruce Wayne/Batman, and Emma Stone was Gwen Stacy. Advertisements for blockbuster films like Iron Man and Man of Steel are found in "blink and you miss them" moments. There are so many things going on in this picture – the use of music, for example – that there’s no way you can catch it all in one go. Alejandro G. Iñárritu has crafted a unique masterpiece that demands to be watched more than once.
Each time I’ve seen Birdman, I’ve told myself that I like it, but don’t love it. Then, I start discussing its various elements and wind up convincing myself otherwise. It’s magnificent. (On Blu-ray, March 9, 2018)

Latine/Hispanic Plays and Musicals
As if I'm not loud enough about being Latina already, but IT'S HERITAGE MONTH, FRIENDS!!!!
Here are some plays and musicals I recommend in honor of Latine/Hispanic Heritage Month. (Please, note I'm not including things set in Spain). Most of these I have seen, read, or been in (or auditioned for). Obviously there are more than I list here, but here's a starting point! Feel free to reblog with your favorites :)
Plays
Ghosts of Bogotá by Diana Burbano--Three Colombian-American siblings return to their family home in Bogotá after the death of their abusive grandfather and must face the literal and metaphorical ghosts of their generational trauma. (stage rights, buy the play)
Welcome to Arroyo's by Kristoffer Diaz--"Alejandro Arroyo owns the newest (and cleanest) lounge in New York City’s Lower East Side. His sister, Molly, has a nasty habit of writing graffiti on the back wall of the local police precinct. Officer Derek is a recent NYC transplant with something to prove. Lelly Santiago is a socially awkward college student who may have discovered that the Arroyo siblings’ late mother was one of the founders of hip-hop music" (From the synopsis on the Dramatists Play Service website).
La Gringa by Carmen Rivera-Tirado--"Maria Elena Garcia goes to visit her family in Puerto Rico during the Christmas holidays and arrives with plans to connect with her homeland. Although this is her first trip to Puerto Rico, she has had an intense love for the island, and even majored in Puerto Rican Studies in college. Once Maria is in Puerto Rico, she realizes that Puerto Rico does not welcome her with open arms. The majority of the Puerto Ricans on the island consider her an American – a gringa – and Maria considers this a betrayal. If she’s a Puerto Rican in the United States and an American in Puerto Rico, Maria concludes that she is nobody everywhere. Her uncle, Manolo, spiritually teaches her that identity isn’t based on superficial and external definitions, but rather is an essence that she has had all along in her heart." (From the synopsis on Concord Theatricals).
In the Time of the Butterflies by Caridad Svich--An adaptation of the novel of the same name by Julia Álvarez. A fictionalized version of the lives of the Mirabal-Reyes sisters. "The sisters inspired resistance cells throughout the country against the dictatorial regime of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The ‘butterflies’, their secret code name, were brutally murdered by the regime in 1960. With immersive video and animation dispersed across the stage, this epic production paints a visual dreamscape of the interior lives of the activist sisters, the beauty and ferocity of the natural world, and the music heard on the radio of the time." (From the show page on the Teatro Vista website).
Anna in the Tropics b Nilo Cruz--"In Florida in 1929 in a Cuban–American cigar factory, where cigars are still rolled by hand and “lectors” are employed to educate and entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector is a cause for celebration, but when he begins to read aloud from Anna Karenina, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners, for whom Tolstoy, the tropics, and the American dream prove a volatile combination." (From the synopsis on DPS)
Musicals
In The Heights by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Algeria Hudes--Set in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York, In the Heights follows a few days of one summer in the neighborhood. The show explores themes of family, purpose, legacy, and what it means to be Latine in the US.
Temple of the Souls by Dean Landon and Anika Paris, Anita Velez-Mitchell, and Lorca Peress. (A note, this show as far as I know has only been performed at the New York Musical Festival) Set just after the Spanish conquest of Puerto Rico, Temple of the Souls follows the story of a young Taino man and the daughter of a conquistador as they become entangled in an ill-fated romance.
On Your Feet by Alexander Dinelaris Jr, Emilio Estefan, and Gloria Estefan. This is a jukebox musical about the life of Gloria Estefan following her from her childhood to the accident that nearly cost her her life and career.
West Side Story by Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Arthur Laurents. I'm a bit loathe to include shows not by Latine creators, but it feels like there are so few musicals about us. WSS is a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. The noble houses of Verona have now been recast as warring street gangs of New York's West Side, the two star-crossed lovers now a best friend of one side's leader and the sister of the other.
Evita by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. A biographic musical about the spiritual leader of Argentina, Eva Peron. Following her life from a driven and ambitious teenager to one of the most powerful women in the Western Hemisphere. Narrated by Che (imagined as revolutionary Che Guevara in the original production, though really intended to simply be a stand-in for the everyday Argentinian), the show follows Eva's rise and subsequent illness and her impact on her people.

CARMEN (2023)
Starring Melissa Barrera, Paul Mescal, Rossy de Palma, Elsa Pataky, Nicole da Silva, Tara Morice, Richard Brancatisano, Benedict Hardie, Kaan Guldur, Nico Cortez, Pip Edwards, Tracy "The DOC" Curry, Corey London, Ryan Oliver Gelbart, Kevin MacIsaac, Zac Drayson, Morgan Smallbone, Damien Thomlinson, Darvin Dela Cruz,        Alejandro Corsino and Marina Tamayo.
Screenplay by  Alexander Dinelaris Jr. and Loïc Barrère & Benjamin Millepied.
Directed by Benjamin Millepied.
Distributed by Sony Pictures Classics. 116 minutes. Rated R.
There is a certain risk to adapting – no matter how loosely – classic works of art.
Benjamin Millepied’s Carmen is only tangentially based upon Georges Bizet’s classic opera of the same name. Some of the basics of the storyline have been held onto, and the fact that music and dance are of great importance to the film, but in most other ways this new Carmen is a very different beast.
And sadly, it is a much more disjointed, eventually slightly disappointing one. It is often striking visually, but the action is often muddled, the music (which is original, only very slightly derivative of Bizet’s opera) is unmemorable and the characters and their situations are fairly unbelievable, despite a spectacular performance as the title character by Melissa Barrera (In the Heights, Scream).
By moving the story to the Mexican border and adding themes of immigration, racism, crime, violence and doomed passion, you would think Carmen would be much more intriguing than it ends up being. Instead it seems overwrought and melodramatic – which I suppose could be expected with something based on an opera. However, it doesn’t even settle into its melodrama in an interesting way.
Carmen is a gorgeous dancer in a dusty, backwater area of Mexico. Her mother is also a dancer, and once had escaped to the United States to follow her dream of dance. Now mother sacrifices herself to give her daughter the opportunity to escape the violent drug cartel which is on her trail and to track down her mother’s best friend, who still runs a dance hall she had started with mom over the border.
While trying to sneak across the border, Carmen is captured by two border patrol officers. One is racist and violent, the other kind and understanding. The kind one is Aidan (Paul Mescal), a Marine who is instantly taken by the gorgeous Carmen. When his friend attempts to kill her in the name of “border security,” Aidan goes on the run with Carmen to find her new home.
They end up crashing with her mother’s friend Masilda (Rossy de Palma), a fellow dancer who still runs the dance studio she opened with Carmen’s mother years earlier. However, Carmen is having trouble deciding between her dream of dance and her passion for Aidan. In the meantime, Aidan is suffering from PTSD from his time in Iraq and is trying to figure out how he could care for Carmen as a fugitive from the law.
Sadly, it all sounds much more interesting than it turns out to be.
Part of the problem is that you really never buy into the relationship between Carmen and Aiden. It happens too quickly, too completely, which I suppose is sometimes how love goes, but still it doesn’t really work as a narrative choice.
Therefore the good parts of Carmen – the atmospheric world, the sensual dance, the searing performance by Barrera – end up being overshadowed by the clunky and manipulative aspects of the film.
Plus, there is not a single song in this “musical” that is anywhere near as arresting and tuneful as “The Toreador Song” from Bizet’s original.

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), commonly known simply as Birdman, is a 2014 American black comedy film directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. It was written by Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris, Jr., and Armando Bo.
Former cinema superhero Riggan Thomson is mounting an ambitious Broadway production that he hopes will breathe new life into his stagnant career. It's risky, but he hopes that his creative gamble will prove that he's a real artist and not just a washed-up movie star. As opening night approaches, a castmate is injured, forcing Riggan to hire an actor who is guaranteed to shake things up. Meanwhile, Riggan must deal with his girlfriend, daughter and ex-wife.

If creativity is bound by rules, it’s not art anymore: ‘Birdman’ co-writer
An art form is a creative expression and cannot be bound by rules, believes Oscar-winning screenwriter Alexander Dinelaris Jr., who says if rules dictate it, it becomes a job of an employee rather than art by an artist.
Alexander, one of the co-writers of acclaimed American black comedy “Birdman”, was in India last month to conduct a screenwriting workshop with some budding talent, and for the…

This kid's emotional video about bullying has rallied the sports world and beyond

Posted by Kimberly Jones on Friday, December 8, 2017
Kimberly Jones posted a video of her son Keaton after picking him up from school early because he was afraid to go to lunch. A group of kids have been mercilessly bullying her son by calling him names, pouring milk in his hair and putting food in his clothes. Keaton asked that she film his message to the world, and since Friday the video has gone viral. Here was her explanation of the video on Facebook:
“For the record, Keaton asked to do this AFTER he had he me pick him up AGAIN because he was afraid to go to lunch. My kids are by no stretch perfect, & at home, he's as all boy as they come, but by all accounts he's good at school. Talk to your kids. I've even had friends of mine tell me they're kids were only nice to him to get him to mess with people. We all know how it feels to want to belong, but only a select few know how it really feels not to belong anywhere.”
It didn’t talk long before the sports world took notice, and it started with Tennessee Volunteers players, who are going to visit Keaton this week.
Please let his mother know that we are trying to reach out. Keaton has some friends on the football team that would love to spend some time with him. https://t.co/tj1ZqDM4KD

The Tennessee Titans found out, and immediately got to work to find Keaton and his family as well. Delanie Walker wants to have Keaton and his family to the Titans’ Dec. 31 game against Jacksonville.
@DonteStallworth @Lakyn_Jones hopefully my video and the tweets that Keaton have been getting brings awareness to bullying and how serious it is in our school system http://pic.twitter.com/1Dujv3RxA5
— Delanie walker (@delaniewalker82) December 9, 2017
Offensive tackle Taylor Lewan wants to visit Keaton at school too.
Please help me and the @Titans get Keaton’s information. We will not tolerate bullying. I’ll be seeing you real soon Keaton.
— Taylor Lewan (@TaylorLewan77) December 10, 2017
But that is only the beginning, because as the video kept traveling more and more people outside of Tennessee took notice. Keaton’s story sadly isn’t rare, and it’s up to everyone to stand against bullying.
Meet Keaton Jones a very smart little boy who is being bullied at school. This video is heartbreaking!! I want to bring Keaton to Vegas and hang out at UFC Headquarters. If anyone knows how i can reach the family please let me know. Thank u everyone http://pic.twitter.com/BR8c4ldDFc
— Dana White (@danawhite) December 10, 2017
Someone tell Keaton to come visit me and my family in New York City. I’ll introduce him to a few great kids & we’ll take him to a few Broadway shows. Can anyone get him that message?? Help us out. We got you Keaton. You’re strong as hec. And you’re gonna win in the end. Promise.

@Lakyn_Jones Hello, Keaton (via your sister)! You may have heard of my parents, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (#MLK) and #CorettaScottKing. I try to honor them and their legacies. I’m so sorry about the pain you’re experiencing because of bullying. You matter. I love you.
— Be A King (@BerniceKing) December 9, 2017
Update: I’ve got in touch with his sister and I’ll be talking to my man Keaton real soon to show my support for him on behalf of Bama nation.... we don’t condone bullying by any means and he needs to know we have his back! #RollTide #TideAgainstBullying https://t.co/dAf8Tv5Nc5

Nah man not cool. Not cool at all. Stuff like this breaks my heart. Those kids and their parents need to be held accountable. Stay strong Keaton! They make fun of you because they are insecure about themselves. You’re perfect because you were made in Gods image. https://t.co/uaj7J7OAv9
— Damon Harrison (@BigDame900) December 10, 2017
I admire you so much Keaton, for speaking out against bullies everywhere. You are far stronger and tougher than anyone who thinks it’s fun to pick on and bully others for their differences. Stay strong, we are all supporting you! https://t.co/sMsVnGNAqj
— Asa Butterfield (@asabfb) December 10, 2017
Keaton, this is so accurate. Why do people do this? I think your sooo cool Keaton! I wanna be your friend ( but srsly) ur freakin awesome ❤️ https://t.co/LD7Q762bL9
— Millie Bobby Brown (@milliebbrown) December 9, 2017
People have set up a GoFundMe for Keaton, to set up a college fund. In less than 24 hours almost $20,000 has been donated — including a $2,000 donation from comedian Patton Oswalt.
This tweet really sums it all up:
Dear bullies of Horace Maynard Middle School, I have a feeling that Keaton Jones kid you make fun of is about to have the greatest week of school that any kid ever had. Signed, The Internet#StandWithKeaton
