Era un 12 de Mayo de 1957 cuando Alfonso de Portago hizo una breve parada en la carrera Mille Miglia de F-1, en el.norte de Italia, para besar a su amada la actriz mexicana Linda Christian, una promesa que le había hecho y que decía sin importancia, porque recuperaría ese tiempo apretando.mas en acelerador.

Los mecánicos le advirtieron del desgaste de uno de los neumáticos y el hizo caso omiso arrancado a gran velocidad e incorporándose a la carrera.

Unos minutos más tarde y cuando iba a 250 km/h el neumático explosionó impactando el Ferrari contra un poste de teléfono quedando en dos mitades y falleciendo el joven piloto.

La carrera que formaba parte del Grand Prix de la F1 fue suspendida desde entonces debido a la alta peligrosidad del circuito.

Alfonso de Portago, fué el 1er piloto español de Ferrari.

Fallecido por accidente a los 29 años.

Morirono anche De Portago e Nelson, la gara non venne sospesa, ma le polemiche che scoppiarono portarono all’abolizione della corsa. E lo stesso costruttore venne incriminato per omicidio colposo plurimo.
