‘Are you alright?’
Kamilah stood in the doorway beside Adrian, her brows furrowing with concern as she watched the commotion unfurl around them. It was the annual Christmas party at Raines Corp, and the staff had pulled out all the stops to ensure that the party went off without a hitch, much to Kamilah’s dismay.
Adrian leans against the wall, nursing a glass of scotch. ‘Of course,’ he hesitates, his eyes focusing on something as he takes a sip, savouring the taste before continuing, ‘I’m just enjoying the festivities, that’s all.’
‘Right...’ a defeated sigh escapes her as she edges closer, giving his arm a reassuring squeeze. ‘Well, I wouldn’t exactly say hiding in the shadows is your usual idea of fun.’
She watches him intently as she locks her eyes on the cause of Adrian’s distraction; Amy. She seems happy, a content smile resting on her face as she maneuvers through the crowd, her emerald dress swaying with every step as her golden locks cascade down her back. She stifles a laugh, her cheeks turning a shade of crimson.
‘You’re worried about her, aren’t you?’
He smiles wistfully.
‘I’m always worried about her.’
‘She’s safe, Adrian,’ Kamilah turns to face him, her calm demeanour shifting into concern. ‘She will always have our protection, you have my word.’
‘I never doubted that for a moment.’
A brief silence encompasses the pair as they watch the festivities from the shadows, though it isn’t long before Kamilah breaks that silence. ‘Well...’ she pauses, adjusting her blazer, ‘I’ve had more than my fair share of wallowing in self pity this evening, so I’m going to locate the bar,’ she lays her hand on his shoulder, ‘nothing soothes my spirit more than....well, spirits.’
Her eyes fixate on Amy, who has since started heading in their direction, her brows knitted with worry. She turns to Adrian once more, lowering her voice to a whisper. ‘Plus, it looks like a certain someone is heading in this direction, so I will bid you Adieu and take my leave.’
She pats him on the back, the corners of her mouth curving into a mischievous grin as her eyes dart between the pair. ‘Take care, Adrian... try to enjoy the festivities, won’t you.’
He shakes his head with reluctantcy, a soft chuckle leaving his lips, ‘Goodnight Kamilah.’
Within seconds, Kamilah has blended in with the crowd, her attention set solely on the bar as she draws away from the pair, disappearing out of view as quickly as she came.
As soon as Kamilah is out of sight, Amy appears before him, a soft hum eminating from her lips as she matches her tone to the beat of the music.
She wraps her arms around his neck with glee, placing a delicate kiss to his cheek as she narrows her eyes in suspicion. She speaks, her voice filled with intrigue.
‘Is everything okay?’
‘Yes,’ he holds her close for a moment, savouring the warmth in her touch, before his eyes drift to the top of her head, where a flourescent red Santa hat rested, its body covered with sequins and felt snowflakes.
Adrian grimaced, his grin widening as the hilarity of the situation became apparent.
‘What....is that?’
Amy adjusted the headpiece, her fingers running along the sequinned end as she smiles proudly at him.
‘It’s my new fancy hat - do you like it?’
He pauses for a moment as he reaches towards her, cupping her cheeks in his hands. He meets her with a soft kiss. ‘It’s gorgeous.’
He curves his arm around her, his hand resting at her waist as they watch the party. They remain like that for a moment, wrapped tightly in one another’s embrace before he speaks, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple.
‘Are you having a good time?’
‘Oh it’s the best! Probably the best Office Christmas Party I’ve ever been to!’
He smiles fondly at her, their fingers lacing together as he takes her hand.
‘Oh? Have you been to many before this?’
‘....no?’
He begins to chuckle to himself as she pokes him playfully in the chest, though this only seems to intensify his laughter. ‘Stop laughing at me! I’m trying to make you feel better.’
‘I never said that I,’ he composes himself, a stoic sigh escaping his lips as he looks at her, ‘what did Kamilah tell you?’
‘Kamilah didn’t have to say anything,’ she runs her hand through his hair, ‘I could see it on your face when I walked over.’ She gives him a soft smile as their eyes meet once more before she rests her head against his chest, pulling him closer with every breath. ‘What is it?’
‘Nothing it’s just...’ he squeezes her hand tightly, as if he is afraid that she will disappear. ‘I’ve never been one for parties, that’s all.’
‘Well....’ she pauses, lowering her voice to a soft whisper.
‘What can I do to change your mind?’
He glances over her shoulder; the party continues to thrive around them, the bright lights enveloping the room as his guests celebrate the festive season, almost oblivious to his presence.
‘Take me away from here.’
She tilts her head in acknowledgement, tucking her hands into the pockets of his suit jacket.
‘Won’t you be missed at the party?’
He grasps at her skirts and pulls her towards him, their faces resting mere inches apart. ‘I think your presence will be missed more than mine.’ He pauses, entangling his fingers in her hair. ‘So.... what do you say?’
She responds with a smile, lowering her voice to a hushed whisper.
‘Let’s get out of here.’
The pair retreat to the sanctuary of Adrian’s penthouse, treading carefully as they stumbled through the dark and into the open space, the light of the moon illuminating their silhouettes as Adrian fumbles around for the light switch.
‘It’s around here somewhere...’
As the lights flicker on, Adrian is overloaded with an array of green, red and gold; the apartment is littered with festive decoration; trinkets and festive candles laid about in an orderly fashion as a long tartan garland hung above the window, a blanket of glitter covering each feature. Adrian’s eyes widened as he caught sight of the tree, a tall 7ft pine decorated in gold and copper, before he turned his attention back to his girlfriend, an excitable smile gracing his face.
‘What is this?’
‘Ah....’ she loops an arm around him, resting her head on his shoulder, ‘it was going to be a surprise for after the party but... I guess it couldn’t wait.’
‘Did you do this all by yourself?’
‘Well....not entirely,’ she wonders over to the Christmas tree, turning on the lights at the base of the trunk, ‘Lily helped, and I would be lying if I said that Kamilah didn’t have a say in our choice of decoration.’
‘Kamilah knew about this?’
‘Of course!’ She outstretches her hand towards him, gesturing for him to come closer, ‘how do you think we managed to get all of this past security without your knowledge?’
She looks at him inquisitively, wrapping her arms around his chest as she leads him to the tree, his eyes twinkling in the bright lights.
‘Do you like it?’
He runs a hand along her forearm, before it rests at the nape of her neck.
‘I love it this....’ he pauses, his gaze drifting around the room, a radiant glow enveloping his face, ‘this is amazing, truly.’ He places a delicate kiss on her forehead. ‘Thank you.’
‘What are you thanking me for?’
His fingers tangle themselves in her hair as he leans forward, pressing his nose against hers. He can hear her heartbeat quicken as he brushes her hair away from her neck, placing a soft trail of kisses on her skin.
‘For being you.’
She smiles warmly at him, running her fingers through his hair as they hold one another for a moment, the vibrant beams of light reflecting on her cheeks as they gaze lovingly at their surroundings, a comfortable silence resting between them; though it isn’t long before a sharp intake of breath breaks this silence.
‘Oh I almost forgot!’ Amy wonders over to the kitchen counter, retrieving a small bag from the countertop. ‘There is one more thing.... but I need you to close your eyes.’
‘Close my eyes?’
‘Just do as I say, mister!’
Adrian holds up his hands in defeat, the corners of his mouth curving into a childish grin as he composes himself, ‘alright.’
He closes his eyes, raising his brow with curiosity as Amy opens the bag and places the mysterious object above his head, a smooth material grazing his forehead as she taps him on the nose.
‘You can open your eyes now.’
Adrian’s eyes refocus in the light as he looks up at her hand, his gaze fixating on the small branch that lay between her fingertips.
Mistletoe.
‘Ta Da!’
She smiles mischievously at him, resting the branch above her head as she meets his gaze.
‘You really have no idea how hard it was to get ahold of some of this - it seems to be quite popular this time of year!’
He shakes his head giddily, a small chuckle leaving his lips. ‘You never cease to amaze me, you know that right?’
She leans into him, her thumb trailing along his bottom lip as she speaks with a melodic tone, ‘Well...’ she places the mistletoe above her lips, ‘would you have it any other way?’
She composes herself before clearing her throat, edging closer as she dangles the branch between them with a wistful smile.
‘Well, whaddaya say?’
He takes the mistletoe from her, positioning it higher above them.
‘I would be a fool to say no.’
Adrian leans towards her, tilting her chin upright, before capturing her lips in a soft, sweet kiss, the mistletoe dangling loosely above their heads. The kiss deepens as Adrian’s arms constrict around her, his hands gripping her waist protectively as he pulls her closer to him, before reluctantly breaking apart.
She nuzzles her face into his chest, meeting his gaze with a sweet smile.
‘Merry Christmas, Adrian.’
He rests his chin against her temple, placing a loving kiss on her forehead.
‘Merry Christmas, Amy.’
