but they are not doing a show. He disappeared from IG and only posts stupid dogs videos on Twitter and she, is photoshopping yoga certificate. //
She is doing a show because every time fans come up with something/speculation on what they think is to come or on what AB is lacking, she does what she can to “prove fans wrong”. That WDW trip was a set up for her- she showed up the last day or two to prove she was there, that “fan” that got footage of them together (with Alba’s back tattoo in the camera roll) was used to get that footage/sighting because Alba wanted to rub it in the fans’ faces. I’m pretty sure Chris didn’t even know that footage was being taken of him. And those family pics that “leaked”- out of all the pics why did the only 3 pics of that include Cho’s and AB leak, what about him with his family and not AB. AB and her team wanted to show that “look his family does like her”. C’mon y’all I ain’t buying it. She may be young and naive, but she is also immature and manipulative. I know a lot of girls just like her that will do anything to get on the come up.

hey! i’m talia (25, pst) and i’m slowly getting myself back into writing following the break that life forced me to take. i’ve mostly roleplayed in groups but in wanting less restrictions and the hope to be able to write more varying stories i’ve decided to jump back into 1x1 and indie rp. i do write on discord but i honestly prefer tumblr. i’m a creature of habit, what can i say?
here are my favorite fcs to use:
priscilla quintana, melisa pamuk, nathalie kelley, ana de armas, yara shahidi, julia dalavia, melissa barrera, kylie bunbury, phoebe tonkin, im jinah, rachel mcadams, jessica chastain, ozge yagiz, alicia vikander, and rebecca rittenhouse
casey deidrick, ryan gosling, kendrick sampson, manny montana, can yaman, chris evans, henry golding, jesse williams, jon bernthal, jamie dornan, paul mescal, lewis tan, and theo james
note: there are more fcs to love this is just the short list and tend to be my go-tos!
when it comes to wanted opposites i am fairly open. i much prefer you use an fc that you have the most muse for. that said, i will happily take any of the fcs listed above as opposites!
if you’d like to interact, please like or comment on this post or shoot me a message! continue reading below the cut for more information including my rules!
writing style: i do use legacy editor and prefer it. however, i am all good with using beta editor should you need to as i understand that not everyone has access to legacy editor. my writing range tends to go from a small paragraph to multiple and i do love the utilization of gifs. i would prefer replies not be excessively formatted and if possible please use small/medium gifs — accessibility!
plotting style: i love to set up a plot and release the muses lol. it’s much more fun to just let the muses figure things out and see where the writing takes us and how things develop and progress naturally. that said, i love tossing around headcanons and setting up backstories and all that good stuff. i prefer not to overly plot. i think random starters and tossing whomever you’re musing in is great fun! its great to see what we can come up with!
characters: i do have a roster of muses that are ready to go and love your muses down. but i am also more than happy and willing to create muses specific to plots!
Adria Arjona as Milena Solis, a 30 yr old vertex cinema owner
Alicia Vikander as Beate Hellström, a 34 yr old clinical psychologist
Ana de Armas as Benita Montero, a 34 yr old lounge singer & amateur art dealer
Can Yaman as Taner Dursun, a 33 yr old former bodyguard & security company owner
Casey Deidrick as Cash Henley, a 34 yr old musician
Casey Deidrick as Greyson Hendrix, a 35 yr old construction contractor
Casey Deidrick as Matthew Sullivan, a 34 yr old beer maker & owner of Sully’s Tavern (looking for baby mama & longterm ex-girlfriend plots)
Chris Evans as Samuel Harrison, a 38 yr old novelist
Henry Golding as Sean Lim, a 36yr old art restoration specialist
Im Jinah as Nari Moon, a 30 yr old hacker and hotelier heir
Jamie Dornan as Conway Dowling, a 42 yr old restauranteur
Jesse Williams as Ezra Maverick, a 41 yr old professional poker player
Jessica Alba as Kassandra Solano, a 42 yr old real estate agent
Jessica Chasten as Shay Westwood, a 45 yr old ATF agent
Jon Bernthal as Nathan Ford, a 44 yr old former cop, trust fund baby, and now barista
Julia Dalavia as Noa Santana Teixeira, a 28 yr old podcast host & creator
Kendrick Sampson as Nolan Kingston, a 34 yr old investigative journalist
Kylie Bunbury as Simone Burke, a 34 yr old medical examiner
Lewis Tan as Alexander Hou, a 38 yr old real estate developer
Lucas Bravo as Jonas Ernshaw, a 38 yr old private investigator with a new identity and dark past
Manny Montana as Romo Beltran, a 40 yr old tattoo artist
Melisa Asli Pamuk as Ela Aydin, a 31 yr old author
Melisa Asli Pamuk as Serra Kavas, a 32 yr old actress & artist
Melisa Pamuk as Halide Demirci, a 31 yr old publisher
Melissa Barrera as Mia Franco, a 32 yr old private investigator
Nathalie Kelley as Angelia Paredes, a 35 yr old book cover artist & voice actor
Özge Yağız as Reyhan Saylak, a 28 yr old disgraced ballet dancer
Paul Mescal as Keith Buckley, a 28 yr old coder
Phoebe Tonkin as Cheyenne O’Hara, a 32 yr old theology professor
Phoebe Tonkin as Genevieve Bardot, a 31 yr old professional photographer
Priscilla Quintana as Andrea Romero, a 30 yr old drug manufacturer & bartender
Priscilla Quintana as Antonella Ibarra, a 30 yr old chef
Priscilla Quintana as Lucía Socarras, a 30 yr old heir to a horse racing farm/business & bloodstock agent
Rachel McAdams as Selina Vale, a 43 yr old spy / mercenary
Rebecca Rittenhouse as Shay Howard, a 34 yr old real estate attorney
Ryan Gosling as Joshua Lincoln, a 33 yr old MotoX racer & Flat track racer & bank robber
Theo James as Ethan Elmore, a 40 yr old thief
Yara Shahidi as Nima Sanaz Abbasi, a 25 yr old aspiring filmmaker
themes: town/city, slice of life, crime/gang, espionage, mature
these are my rules for interacting/writing:
please be 21+
all muses must be 25+
please be patient. i work a full-time job and have my family to take care of so i will be slow to do replies during the week. most of my activity will be on the weekends.
extension of #3 — i tend to do replies in the order i receive them unless i have insane muse for a particular thread and i need to get it done and out of the way because it’s all i can think about. please please please do not assume this means disinterest if i do not do your thread first or if i do replies out of order. muse is weird and these actions do not mean i do not enjoy or love our threads.
communicate! i cannot read your mind and you cannot read mine so i appreciate communication if something is off or wrong or if you have questions or would like to chat and plot about threads. i love talking headcanons too btw so feel free to hit me up any time!
if ever you’re not feeling a thread, muse, connection you have all the right to drop the thread/connection. again, i would appreciate communication or a heads up but i also understand.
i do not chase down replies. if your reply doesn’t show up in my activity or if i’ve missed it on my dash then it will not end up in my drafts. please don’t take this personally. i do not have the time to go hunting for things usually. if you feel a reply was missed i’d appreciate a nudge or a link. that said, i will do my best to stay on top of things!
i have adhd. concentrating and focus is a challenge for me. i can also be forgetful. just a heads up is all.
basically, i love long replies and writing novels back and forth but at the same time they can also overwhelm me fairly easily. i do tend to write long replies but never ever feel the need to match me. write what works for you and your muse.
discord is available upon request!

Enter the Portal of Self-Love
Tumblr media
Definition of portal Merriam Webster
1 : door, entrance especially : a grand or imposing one
2 : the whole architectural composition surrounding and including the doorways and porches of a church
3 : the approach or entrance to a bridge or tunnel
Everyone stumbles upon the body positivity movement in their own way. Props to Lizzo for being a modern and hyper-visible voice, but shout-outs go, as well, to the LGBTQQIA umbrella family, tattoo and body art world, and sex workers, who all remind folks about the importance of autonomy and choice in presenting, describing, transforming, sharing, denying, withholding, and protecting our bodies as they are and as we want them to be.
Some people land on body positivity almost effortlessly. There are those that land on it as children - blessed with some kind of self-esteem compass that guides them through the dark times or looks and aesthetics that match the approval of the social norm. Some people find it emerging from the torture chamber many call adolescence. Others find it as intimate encounters turn into better relationships with one's own body and movement, or as we encounter peers who teach us directly, and indirectly, other definitions of self-love.
For those who grew up watching stars like Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Alba or Halle Berry being praised as curvy, who watched and heard girls in our class participating in rituals associated with anorexia and bulimia at the same time as the rise in the waif aesthetic in Hollywood and Milan, and whose souls were shamed when outsiders commented on certain parts of their (our) bodies or the way clothing fit them (us), today's era of visibility, as far as different kinds of bodies, is the oxygen mask many of us needed. Yes, there is room for additional representation and subversive attacks on auto-norming "thick/thicc" bodies, - such as only featuring plus-sized models with flat stomachs and round hips despite bellies, guts, and fupas being common in women wearing similar sizes, but I still call it progress.
Tumblr media
I am one of those people who grew up taking in, internally battling, and, to this day, working to fight the demons singing toxic songs about better bodies, inept beauty, acceptability, and respectability. But I scored a victory, recently, when I walked through a digital doorway and entered a new world, from which I haven't turned back since: The Pink Portal. I think I know the person who posted the first announcement or promotion I saw. I think. Either way, as Merriam Webster describes in one of its definitions, portal means "the approach or entrance to a bridge or tunnel," and this couldn't be truer of the black women-owned lingerie shop. From the moment I saw the first graphic, I saw thighs that looked mine - or that of my friends and family members - breasts that fit bras and bodysuits in ways similar to mine - or that of my friends and family members - and intimate-wear outfits, makeup, and styling choices that reflected those I sometimes choose - or those chosen by friends and family members.
Like walking into a family reunion or popping up at a homie's cookout, arriving at The Pink Portal page has a unique way of hugging you with a sense of familiarity, while also beckoning you to take bigger strides in loving yourself. It is because of this very personal reason that I have decided to use 3 AM IS THE NEW BLACK to highlight the work they're doing, the product they're selling, and the event where you can see it all for yourself. Enter the portal, and join the founders, models and supporters for “The Pink Portal Experience,” a gathering that will “showcase pieces and styles from [their] collection as well as other designers and boutique owners.” The event is scheduled for September 24, 2021, from 7:30-10:30pm in Providence. Tickets are available through Eventbrite (https://bit.ly/2WNalXp) or using the attached QR Code.
Tumblr media
Browse their merchandise and read testimonials on www.thepinkportal.com. And follow @3amblack on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook all month long to follow our partnership with The Pink Portal, and to catch fun tidbits leading up to their September 24 event.
Sunshine and laughter,

5 Tattoo Trends That Will Be Huge in 2021
Just like haircuts, hair colors and makeup, there are big trends that go in and out but really, it’s all about whatever makes you feel great. The tattoo trends for 2021 are the same. Sure, there are celeb-favorite types that get more and more popular and that’s what we’re here to show you. But since it’s unlikely you’ll get the exact same tat, use these looks as inspo to inspire your new ink. Celebrities including Chrissy Teigen , Ashley Benson , Miley Cyrus, Halle Berry, Jessica Alba (and on and on) get some of the coolest tattoos from major artists such as Dr. Woo, Mr. K and JonBoy. In case you can’t get in to see them, use these stars’ ink to help you decide on your next tattoo. There are a few big trends that have been blowing up as of late. It seems like everyone is getting tiny tattoos and meaningful writing on places including fingers, the ribcage and on the neck—especially behind the ear. Just think about Rihanna’s back of stars and Selena Gomez’s ‘RARE.’ Take a look at some more killer tattoos. You might want to save this page. Source: Instagram Tiny Tattoos Ashley Benson got snacks like ice cream, Kaia Gerber the number 23 on her elbow, a lady with a bird on her arm and ‘Strawberry Fields’ on her back, and Bella Hadid got a rose. Tiny tattoos will always be trending thanks to their affordability, ease and ability to cover up. But it seems like lately, instead of getting one major tattoo, stars are getting 5-10 mico ones. Source: Instagram Writing 2020 was a difficult year for many, if not all, of us. It would only make sense people would want to get meaningful phrases on their body, maybe even to honor someone they lost. Bella Hadid has dainty designs that read “I love you,” and “my love” in Arabic, Miley has ‘I’m proud of U, yoko’ on her shoulder based on a note written by Yoko Ono, and Chrissy Teigen has a wrist tattoo in honor of her late son. Source: Instagram Finger Tattoos Although finger tats can be a little high-maintenance (you have to get them touched up or they’ll fade away from rubbing), they’re also really cute. We especially love Hailey Bieber’s ‘J’ (for Justin, of course), as well as Sofia Richie’s cross, Demi Lovato’s smiley face. Source: Instagram Ribcage Tattoos The ink placement might seem sexy—and it is—but a ribcage tattoo is often a great choice if you want to easily cover it up. Or, like Vanessa Hudgens and Lily Collins, you can reveal the ink in a glam dress or, you know, nothing at all. Maisie Williams and Ashley Benson have them, too. https://ift.tt/1X1wOZA ? Neck Tattoos A tattoo behind the neck can be just as sexy as the ribcage but a little easier to get done—and show off. Selena Gomez accomplished two trends by getting ‘RARE’ on her neck. Ariana Grande also has neck tattoos—two, actually: a bee and a half-moon. The former tattoo is to mark the one year anniversary of the Manchester Arena terror attacks. Of course, not all neck tattoos are tiny. Justin Bieber has multiple, including a large rose, and Demi Lovato has a butterfly. 5 Tattoo Trends That Will Be Huge in 2021 published first on https://healthandstyleinstituteblog.wordpress.com

BDRPWriMo Task #21 -- A list of 10+ characters you’d like to see in the RP
Any fc ideas I put are ofc hypothetical lmao
SO HEEERE is a list of 10+ characters I selfishly want to see here! Yes a ton of the open Elena of Avalor characters are on the list but! That’s not all!
1. Olivia da Silva (fc suggestions by McKala: Marina Nery, Bruna Tenorio, Barbie Ferreira, Cierra Ramirez)
I made this skeleton woowoo! Come play an Avaloran character! A young sorceress honing her craft! Worldbuild Avalor with me, yaaaay! I put Brazilian-preferred on the skeleton for fc suggestions because the Avalor we’ve crafted in game is a bilingual society in South America with Portuguese and Spanish influence about equally. It’s not requiiired, like you can change her last name to be Spanish and not Portuguese, but! I tracked down a ton of Brazilian fcs with resources so you don’t even have to hunt! Below the list of Brazilian fcs, I also have non-Brazilian fcs listed.
Tumblr media
2. Professor Guadalupe “Lupe” Mendoza (fc suggestions by McKala: Gina Torres, Charo Bogarin, Jessica Alba, Velina Hsau Houston, Lana Parrilla)
COME PLAY A COOL AVALORAN WOOOO
Join me in Avalor world! Lupe Mendoza is so cooool, she’s a professor, a scholar, a genius, a really cool lady forced to flee Avalor because of the new dictatorship.
Tumblr media
4. Jasmine (fc suggestions by McKala: SO MANY. including Claudia Doumit,  Njoud Al Shammari, Dalal AlDoub,  Adila Sedraïa, Sonita Alizadeh)
I’m honestly shook Jasmine’s not taken yet y’all! She’s a great character, you can go so many diff directions with her and HEL-LO worldbuilding!
Tumblr media
5. Aladdin! (fc suggestions by McKala: Derrick Monasterio, Toni Mahfud)
Y’all again! Think of the worldbuilding you’d get to do with Agrabah!
Tumblr media
6. Li Shang (fc suggestions by McKala: Shawn Dou, Lewis Tan, Osric Chau)
Y’all how do we not have all the Mulan characters yet??? But I would pay someone physical money for a Li Shang ahhhhh
Free URL for you - thetimes-theyare-ashangin
Tumblr media
7. Jafar (fc suggestions by McKala: JOHN ABRAHAM omfg, Omar Lofti, Adrian Pasdar)
Swynlake needs a new evil sorcerer! And it’s a chance to do some cool worlbuilding for Agrabah, like Team Avalor’s done with Avalor!
Tumblr media
8. Star Butterfly (fc suggestions by McKala: Prilly Latuconsina, Kiana Lede, Rola, Liza Koshy, Normani Kordei, Anastasia Tsilimpiou, Zara Larsson)
Y’all, again. The worldbuilding! Potential! Here! you can make her a magical princess from a another dimension how DOPE
Tumblr media
9. Alonso Cordoba (fc suggestions by McKala: Taylor Zakhar, Diego Tinoco, Maluma, Rafael De La Fuente)
Come play the snobby Avaloran noble turned refugee, childhood frenemy/pain in the ass of Princess Elena! Join Avalor Squad and get a piece of Avalor worldbuilding. Help me develop the Avaloran nobility, the pop culture, the youth culture. Being from Avalor is a cool enough plot, with the coup and civil conflict now, but being nobility? With a potential connection to the princesses? Woooo!
Tumblr media
10. Armando Salinas (fc suggestions by McKala: tricky, bc he has to be Latinx and body diverse, but I have three possible ideas in mind and I can make gifs for them! They’re Harvey Guillen and Erik Griffin.
Wow there HAS to be more body diverse Latinx men out there. But!!! Join the Avalor party y’all!
Tumblr media
11. Cristina Elizaga - FCs by McKala: Tamara Mena, Annie Elainey (non-binary, so must be non-binary), Kallyna Sampaio
I actually made the gif packs for 2 of 3 of these suggestions! Since Latinx fcs who use wheelchairs are very sparse, I went ahead and made gifs for two potential fcs. Join team Avalooooor!
Tumblr media
12. QUEEN CLARION, Y’ALL. FC ideas by McKala: Deborah Mailman, Otsuka Nene, Gabrielle Union, Kulap Vilaysack
I canNOT believe Queen Clarion is still open y’all
who doesn’t wanna be a nearly immortal fairy queen!
Tumblr media
13. Hay Lin!!!! (fc suggestions by McKala: Janice Wu, Lauren Tsai, Jelly Lin, Lai Meiyun)
Play a Guardian! Travel across diff dimensions, weeeeee! Have the power of WIND, WOW
Tumblr media
14. Taranee Cook!!!! (fc suggestions by McKala: Karidja Touré, China Anne McClain, Sammi Maria)
H O W are the guardians still open omg.
Tumblr media
15. WILBUR ROBINSON !!  (fc suggestions by McKala: Aedy Ashraf, Yoon Sanha, Laïs Salameh, Boo Seungkwan, Odiseas Georgiadis, Anuarbekov Nurgisa, August Vachiravit, Đoàn Thế Lân, and more)
someone bring me and Mary our SON omg! Wilbur’s adopted so literally any ethnicity works - I think his skeleton says he has to be POC so as long as he’s POC!

I've been depressed for years and didn't take care of myself at all. Showering and brushing my hair was a chore, let alone keeping up with skincare or any form of grooming. Now I'm on anti-depressants and for the first time I want to take care of myself. I want to learn to wear a little makeup, style my hair and dress nicely to make myself feel put together and nice. Do you have any tips for someone just starting out with this stuff or any product recs? You always look so beautiful and neat
Awe thank you so much darling. And congratulations on taking that step to get to that place! I know first hand that going on anti-depressants isn’t an easy decision to make but they’re amazing when you find one that works! I’m so proud of you :)
I generally like to keep my routine really simple, mostly do to sheer laziness. You don’t need a lot to look “put together” because a lot of it is just about confidence. My skin care is easy peasy. I wash with the Zen cleanser from Sage Naturals, tone with a little mix I made of organic apple cider vinegar, water, and some drops of tea tree oil, and then i moisturize during the day with alba botanicles jasmine & vit E moisturizer (SMELLS SO NICE!) and at night with organic jojoba oil :)
My makeup, I use anastasia beverly hills dip brow (a jar lasts me like a year so it’s worth the money!), mascara is the tarte gifted one, and concealer is the tarte maracuja creaseless concealer. i wear a bit of blush or bronzer and recently bought a becca pressed highlighter because it was SO PRETTY even though it was SO EXPENSIVE. i also recently love the tarte so fine liquid liner, moreso than the kat von d tattoo liner tbqh.
For hair i usually just do the norm. wash with lush Big shampoo (jar not bar) and condition with lush happy happy joy joy mixed with a bit of Ion purple conditioner. i either style my hair straight or curl it... or i might try to wear it more natural of late because all this heat is damaging my hair and i want it to be long and healthy! so in that case i just let it air dry.
but yeah, those are the products that i use. it sounds like a lot i guess... but i don’t do wild things with my hair or makeup or anything. i kind of just play around with what i like and go with that. i like my makeup pretty simple looking... just kind of polished. i find a nicely shaped brow, some mascara, a bit of blush/bronzer and concealer go a looooong way.
as for my hair, i also keep products to a minimum. i use a bit of spray in conditioner/heat protector and a bit of hair oil but that’s about it.
as for dressing nicely, just wear what you like! sometimes i’m into wearing dresses and stuff, but sometimes i just like to wear leggings and sweatshirts. I think a nice pair of sneakers can really pull an outfit together. personally, i love my white converse (even though they’re kinda dirty now from going to shows in them lol). and even walking around with my converse, leggings, and a sweatshirt i still feel pretty put together. jeans and a t-shirt also look cute with them. same with shorts. honestly everyone should own a pair of white converse because they go with everything (including dresses).
i think that being “put together” is all about what makes you comfortable. i don’t tend to stray too much outside my commfort zone with clothing because I find when i do... i feel awkward and out of place and it’s visible on me. whereas if i wear clothes that i like, i feel a lot more confident and project this air of being put together! i also get a lot of inspiration from what other people are wearing. like if a girl has a cute outfit on the street i might try to replicate it with my own clothes.
anyway, i don’t know if this was any help at all. i’m sorry if it’s kind of a muddled mess! i wish you luck on your journey though and i hope you find the look that you’re going for xoxoxo

There Will Be Facepaint: Picts vs Romans on the Antonine Wall
Tumblr media
By Adrián Maldonado
So it’s World Heritage Day next week, and to mark the occasion, Dig It! 2017 and EventScotland are hosting Scotland in Six, unique celebrations on all six Scottish World Heritage Sites. Much to my nerdy glee, one of these will be Pictish themed, on the Antonine Wall at Callendar House, Falkirk.
I have kind of an unhealthy fascination with the Picts. I will definitely be going.
The Event
Tumblr media
The big event is a Romans vs Picts 5k race, for which participants will be given free blue facepaint or Roman helmets. To sweeten the deal, this will be followed by a Great Roman Bake Off (what, no Pictish cakes?). Medals will be won, costume prizes will be awarded. The event is free but ticketed so make sure to sign up online. Did I mention there will be cake? Why haven’t you registered yet? What kind of monster are you?
Who Were the Picts?
Tumblr media
The Picts inhabited large swathes of modern-day Scotland from at least AD 297, when the Romans first started to grumble about them, to around AD 900 when they re-branded as the more inclusive kingdom of Alba. They started off as one of the Roman Empire’s least favourite dinner guests, yet they carried on inviting themselves over to dinner at Hadrian’s Wall until the Romans eventually found it easier to just move out. They later became notorious for their tattooing and graffiti skills, and left their mark by tagging numerous ancient standing stones in northeastern Scotland.
Since then, they have become one of history’s most colourful stock characters, spontaneously generating from behind any depiction of a Roman wall, appearing in thinly-veiled form in movies about any part of the Iron or Middle Ages, and even popping up in fantasy and sci-fi visions of the past and future. I used to complain about historical inaccuracies in their portrayal in pop culture, but now I just go hoovering these appearances up (in the name of research). They are timeless and weird and Scottish and great.
Stand By for a Message from Prof Buzzkillington
If you’ll excuse the interruption, I have to put in a word from my stuffy academic side here. Of course, the Antonine Wall was built, staffed and abandoned well over a century before the first mention of the Picts in historical sources. As such, there is no real evidence that a Roman ever chased a Pict (or vice versa) across the Antonine Wall. That said, it is also the case that the Antonine Wall remained visible in the landscape after its abandonment, as it does in places like Rough Castle nearly two millennia later, and it would have been well known to any Picts living there in later years. Indeed, it was for a time considered to be the border between the Pictish and Northumbrian kingdoms, and Bede reports local Pictish names for the wall in the 8th century. So there. You can read my very serious thoughts about the wall’s curious afterlife here, as I stuff Prof Buzzkillington back in his box.
How To Go Full Pict
Mostly what I want to see next week is glorious anachronism, like the movie Brave, but in trainers. Not enough Picts on Instagram, folks. I know there’s plenty of Roman love out there but I do hope there will be enough facepaint to make them think again. So to help things along, here follow some of my favourite Picts and pseudo-Picts to use as your inspiration for next Tuesday.
1.       The Noble Savage
Tumblr media
The classic way of depicting the Picts is to graft tattoos and symbols onto a stock Native American archetype. This smashing together of the ‘primitive’ from different continents has a long pedigree, from the famous 16th-century watercolours by John White just after his first visit to colonial Virginia, straight the way through to more recent neo-colonial action films such as Centurion and The Eagle (above). Pros: may include trousers. Cons: all that cultural insensitivity.
2.       The Ginger Maniac
Tumblr media
The kind of Pict that appears when all you need is a herd of howling, naked antagonists in a battle sequence. The name comes from a classic Blackadder special (above) in which we go back in time to Hadrian’s Wall just in time for a raid, with hilarious consequences. Pros: keeping cool during a race is easier when naked. Cons: being arrested for public indecency.
3.       The Braveheart
Tumblr media
The most anachronistic, and yet most beloved, use of Pictish-style facepaint in pop culture is not even on a Pict at all, but on the late medieval army of William Wallace according to history expert Mel Gibson. No reason was given for the facepaint other than, you know, Scotland? Pros: just look like you’re going to a Scotland football match. Cons: the sound of history crying.
4.       The Goth
Tumblr media
The type of pseudo-Pict often used in contemporary fictional allegories for the Roman walls, from Game of Thrones’ scarified cannibal Thenns to the hyper-Goth biker-Picts of the film Doomsday (above; they are also cannibals, natch). Pros: stylish leather trousers. Cons: think of the chafing.
5.       The Superpict
Tumblr media
My newest favourite depiction of a Pict is Saltire, the Scottish superhero from Diamondsteel Comics, set in a pseudo-historical Pictish past. According to creator John Ferguson, “He’s big, he’s blue and he’s ginger”. Nuff said. Pros: looking like a badass. Cons: that’s gonna take a lot of body paint.
Next post will be reporting from the event - and there will be facepaint.

13 Things Most Fans Have Never Noticed About NCIS
Every time I go over to my mom’s house, I know I can count on watching at least a few episodes of her favorite show,NCIS.
However, even after all the times she’s worn out her DVDs with repeated viewings, I bet there are still a few surprising facts about NCIS she missed likely because she’s often a bit distracted by the handsome leading man, Mark Harmon.
Whether it’s a subtle reference to one of the actors’ personal lives, a slipup in the plot’s continuity, or someoverly accurate attention to detail, there are more layers to the drama series than most fans realize.
Of course, this is exactly what makes a TV show that much more fun to to watch!
Take a look at some of these facts about NCIS we were able to gather up and see if you missed something while watching the episodes.
You can also let us know in the comments if we missed your favorite tidbit, and be sure to SHARE with your friends!

1. Two Real NCIS Agents Have Made Cameos
YouTube / CBS
Special AgentDavid Brant appears in the season three episode, “Frame Up,” whileformer director Thomas Betro popped in “Identity Crisis” two seasons later, both going by their real names as characters on the show.
2. Abby’s Back Tattoo Disappears
YouTube / CBS
Though several of the quirky character’s tattoosare part of actress Pauley Perrette’s real collection of body art, the large cross that appears in a scene where she changes clothes in front of McGee is clearly a fake as it is never seen again despite Abby’s revealing outfits.
3. The Team Should Have A Stack Of Speeding Tickets
YouTube / CBS
Based in Washington, D.C., Gibbs and his crew commonly respond to crime scenes in places like Norfolk and Virginia Beach. In real life, the drive would take at least four hours, but they always seem to arrive in less than half that time.
4. They Keep The “Most Wanted” Wall Up-To-Date
YouTube / CBS
Eagle-eyed viewers may have noticed that the photo of Osama Bin Laden on the team’s “Most Wanted” wall was quietly crossed out with red tape following his death in May 2011.
5. Mark’s Real Son Plays Him In Flashbacks
YouTube / CBS
If you thought they just got lucky with casting an actor who looks remarkably like Mark, think again.
From 2008 to 2012, Sean Harmon appeared in six different episodes, including the emotional 200th episode “Life Before His Eyes” (shown above), playing a younger version ofGibbs.
6. The Agents Have Two Different Types Of Badges
YouTube / CBS
Did you ever wonder why some agents wear a gold badge while others wear silver? Well, the gold is designated for full-time agents, while the silver is for part-timers.
7. Gibbs’ Off-Duty T-Shirts Are Legit
YouTube / CBS
When shown taking a load off and working on his boat, Gibbssports several T-shirts sent to him from law enforcement agencies across the country, or a sweatshirt with “NIS” written on it.
Before being dubbed NCIS, the department was known as “Naval Investigative Service,” which is around the time he would have started his career there.
8. Abby Has A Musical Middle Name
YouTube / CBS
If you look closely at the paperwork Abby fills out in the season 12 episode “The Lost Boys,” you’ll see it reveals her full name: Abigail Beethoven Sciuto.
9. Michael Pokes Fun At His Real-Life Romantic Past
YouTube / CBS
In a season three episode, Tony jokes that he’s “got a better chance of hooking up with Jessica Alba than these guys do of infiltrating SeaLift.”
Michael was actually engaged to Jessica back when they co-starred together onDark Angelfrom 2000 to 2002.
10. Mark Uses His Own Tools
YouTube / NCIS
Being quite the handyman in real life, the actor brought in tools from his own workshop to use in the scenes with Gibbs working on his boat.
Mark also restored the 1972 Airstream his character uses.
11. The Co-Creator Keeps It In The Family
YouTube / CBS
Donald P. Bellisario cast his stepson, Sean Murray, as Timothy McGee. The character’s sister is also played by Sean’s real-life stepsister, Troian Bellisario.
Even Gibbs’ first names, Leroy Jethro, are a nod to Donald’s family: his brother is Leroy and his father’s middle name is Jethro.
12. Michael And Robert Wagner Already Have A Connection
YouTube / CBS
You probablycan’t tell by watching them onscreen, but the duo was already connected before NCIS.The resemblance between the two actors was noticed back in 2004 by the producers, who cast Michaelto play Robert in the TV movieThe Mystery of Natalie Wood, about Robert’s late wife.
13. Ellie’s OSU Gear Is Authentic
YouTube / NCIS
Before joining the show inits 11th season,Emily Wickersham attended Oklahoma State University and brought along some of her own mementos to her character’s desk.

Ecuador Claims It Lost The Bodies Of COVID-19 Victims
Jose Sanchez / Getty Images
A worker at a cemetery in Guayaquil.
Soraya Díaz had been waiting for this moment for two agonizing months.
On March 25, Díaz’s mother died in the hospital of what was likely COVID-19, which had cut a swathe through her city. Then, her body disappeared. Díaz was left despairing. Not only had she lost her 85-year-old mother, Enriqueta Razo, but the authorities then lost her body. Díaz was left with no way, or place, to grieve.
Then, on May 27, Díaz got a text message from a forensic anthropologist in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil who told her they had found her mother’s body and wanted her to go identify it. But when she went to meet him, expecting to be shown her mother’s cadaver, she found herself looking at photographs of the body on a computer screen.

Something’s not right, she thought. “I’m no doctor but if the bodies have been decomposing for so long, why do my mother’s cheeks still look rosy?”
Díaz demanded to see the physical remains, but the anthropologist, who analyzes human remains to determine their identity, told her that they had already been sent to the office in charge of forensic science. When she went there, employees waved her away, saying that her mother’s cadaver was at the prosecutor’s office. The body, Díaz recalled being told, wasn’t there either. Ninety-eight days after her mother died, Díaz has yet to recover her body, and give her a proper burial, albeit a socially distanced one.
Despite rising numbers of contagions, many parts of the world have begun loosening the lockdown restrictions and people are slowly returning to some kind of normalcy, streaming back into malls and bars. The pandemic, it seems to have been collectively and unofficially decided, is behind us now.
But for hundreds of families in Guayaquil, where disastrous state mismanagement led to bodies piling up on sidewalks and inside hospital corridors at the height of the crisis, the ordeal is far from over. At least 126 cadavers are still awaiting identification, stored in shipping containers at the National Service for Legal Medicine and Forensic Science’s Guayaquil office. On the surface, the city hums along almost to a pre-pandemic beat, but an unfortunate group of residents are left to stare at their phones inside malls, on public buses and in their living rooms, compulsively refreshing a government page indicating the final resting place of COVID-19 victims, hoping to see the names of their loved ones appear on it.
For many of them, most of whom live in the city’s most impoverished neighborhoods, that moment may never come.
“We lived through a war,” Guayaquil’s mayor, Cynthia Viteri, told BuzzFeed News. “Many bodies won’t appear because they’ve already been cremated.”
The others, by now, are decomposed beyond recognition.

A relative of a victim of the coronavirus cries next to a casket at the Hospital General del Guasmo Sur on April 4, 2020.
During the first days of April, a line of trucks holding empty coffins formed outside the Hospital General Guasmo Sur, Ecuador’s largest public hospital, as families waited to retrieve their dead relatives. Grief led to anger as the days stretched into nights and hospital staff refused to bring out the bodies.
By then, Guayaquil had become the epicenter of the pandemic in Latin America. In all, around 10,000 people have died since the start of the pandemic in the city of 2.6 million, according to Viteri.
At the hospital entrance, an employee saw a business opportunity in the desperate relatives. According to witnesses, he began telling people that for $300 he’d let them walk through the gates and retrieve their loved one’s body.
Díaz’s niece, Nayet Villota, volunteered to go in. The family agreed with the employee that they would only pay the $300 if they found the body and retrieved it. When Villota, 22, came back out, she was pale and visibly traumatized, said Díaz.
“It’s impossible,” Díaz remembered her saying as she described hundreds of bodies poking out of body bags heaped onto puddles of blood. Some were strewn across the hospital lawn and others were piled up inside shipping containers. People stepped on limp arms and legs as they frantically searched for their loved one amid the stench.
With only a handful of ambulances in the city, bodies were also rotting inside houses. Because of the countrywide curfew, people were forced to spend days next to infected corpses. Brokenhearted but fearful of the virus, many transferred the bodies to the street as 911 calls went unanswered.
When officials finally picked up the cadavers, they gave families a number with which to locate their loved ones on an online database. But, overwhelmed, these officials at times didn’t attach the identifying tags properly onto the body bags and many got lost. Soon, people began crisscrossing the city going from hospitals to morgues to cemeteries, begging to see the lists of the bodies that had been admitted to each.
There was such chaos that officials told some families that the remains of their missing relatives could be found in three different locations simultaneously, according to Viteri.
“There was the little box you had at home with ashes, the name on a tombstone, and the body that was lost in a shipping container,” said Viteri, meaning relatives were left confused whether they had their relative in their hands, if they were buried in a graveyard, or missing in a pile of bodies. As tension between the city and national governments boiled over, Viteri tweeted at Vice President Otto Sonnenholzner, demanding he reveal the location of the missing bodies.
Those who registered their missing relatives with the government awaited calls. Instead, they got messages on WhatsApp.
Roberto Escudero, one of three forensic anthropologists in the country, communicated with the families of many of the 216 bodies he was in charge of identifying through the messaging platform. His messages lit up their cellphone screens with questions about scars and tattoos, or the clothes their relatives were wearing the day they died.
The families and Escudero exchanged photographs of identifying physical marks to see if these were a match. His work, he said, was part science, part serendipity.
During a sleepless night last month, he turned on CNN in time to see the anchor interviewing a woman whose loved one had gone missing — Villota. A photograph came on the TV: It was Razo, Díaz’s mother. Escudero remembered working on a cadaver with a similar mole on her forehead and reached out to the family on Facebook.
Escudero talked to scores of distraught families around the clock. Even over the phone, “you could feel their pain,” Escudero said. “They call, they write, during the day, at night, at the crack of dawn.”
For weeks, it seemed like Escudero and his colleagues had hit a wall, and families of the missing grew restless. Corruption scandals erupted across the country: Prosecutors discovered a criminal ring that was selling body bags to hospitals at more than 12 times the real price; the prefect of Guayas, the province where Guayaquil is located, was arrested for corruption in the acquisition of medical supplies; and former president Abdalá Bucaram was taken into custody after authorities discovered thousands of coronavirus testing kits in his home.
These scandals made the families looking for the remains of their relatives even more distrustful of the authorities.
“With so much negligence, with so many lies, how am I supposed to believe them?” asked Marjorie Raza, whose 70-year-old father, José Gonzalo Raza, was hospitalized for what was likely COVID-19 on March 26 and has been missing ever since then.
After Raza, a tailor, got her father’s death certificate, she collected $200 from family members and asked for a $400 loan from an acquaintance to pay for his burial at one of the city’s cemeteries, including a coffin. For a moment, she grew hopeful that his body had been identified: One of the anthropologists called her to say they had found a man in his seventies wearing a white T-shirt, just like her father had been on the day she dropped him off at the hospital.
But when she saw the photo, Raza saw the emblem of a political party stitched on the T-shirt. It couldn’t have been her father.
Now, she’s waiting for officials to take a sample of her DNA and see if it matches any of the remains that have still not been identified.
“I feel humiliated. We were doubly hit: not given medical attention and not given the body of our father,” she said. “Imagine how I felt on Father’s Day.”

As the cases of missing bodies grew during March and April, Zaida Rovira, the vice president of Ecuador’s Ombudsman’s Office, began to collect their details.
Their stories added up to an image of absolute chaos across the city.
Alba Maruri Grande: Her family received a body allegedly belonging to Maruri and immediately cremated it. After a month with the ashes, health staff visited the family home and told them that Maruri was still alive, recovering in a local hospital.
Teófilo Velasco Ortiz: The family was not told that Velasco Ortiz had been moved from the Hospital General Guasmo Sur to a different hospital. Instead, medical staff told his family that he had died and gave them a cadaver belonging to another patient.
Yin Reynaldo Barrezueta: After being diagnosed with COVID-19 and trying to get help at two different hospitals, Barrezueta died at home. Police took his body away, but didn’t tell his family where they planned on taking him. They then lost the cadaver.
The poorest communities were the most affected, said Rovira. Many of the people there don’t have the money to travel from the suburbs into the city to report a missing relative, so she said the number of misplaced bodies is likely higher than what’s been reported.
On May 18, Rovira filed a complaint against the ministries of health, defense, and the interior, the national police, the social security institute, and three public hospitals over the mismanagement of cadavers during the coronavirus crisis.
In it, she demanded that the state investigate the locations of the missing remains within 10 days, reimburse families for paid and unused burial expenses, provide psychological support to relatives, and issue a public apology to the victims’ families.
“We are fighting against the state’s most powerful institutions,” said Rovira, saying the lawsuit is unprecedented in Ecuador. “These families deserve to close the chapter and live out their grief.”
Several hearings for the lawsuit took place, with relatives testifying before a judge. Meanwhile, families staged sit-ins outside different government offices in Guayaquil. Many held up handmade posters with photographs of their missing loved one: “Where is his body?”
As the date of the final hearing neared, families said they began getting calls from the group of anthropologists, saying their loved one had been found and asking them to go in and identify them. They were surprised to be shown photographs rather than the remains themselves.
Last week, the judge who oversaw the hearings issued a ruling blaming the Ministry of Public Health, the Institute of Social Security, and the three hospitals named in the lawsuit for violating “the right to human dignity,” and called on them to issue a public apology. He also instructed the national police to return the bodies of the missing people to their families.
Many families were disappointed that several institutions, including the Ministry of the Interior, appeared to have been exonerated. And they worry that it is not yet clear how the government will return their loved ones’ bodies to them.
Díaz ruminates over this at home, alone. She wonders if the scientists who claimed to have identified her mother simply took a photograph from her Facebook page or social media and tweaked it a bit before showing it to her so she would let up her fight.
“What if I get ashes?” wondered Díaz during a recent call. “I’ll never be certain they belong to my mother.” ●

Halle Berry has delivered her best lip-syncing dance performance to Destiny’s Child hit Survivor as part of a new social media challenge for Women’s History Month.
Black Panther’s Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter kicked off the new #WomenDancingTogether challenge on Wednesday, when she posted an Instagram video of herself miming dramatically to Beyonce’s song Run the World (Girls), using her Academy Award as her microphone.

“Ladies! Let’s have some fun for the rest of #WomensHistoryMonth and show the world when women unite anything is possible,” she wrote in the accompanying caption.

She then nominated six other gal pals to follow in her footsteps, encouraging them to “upload a video dancing and/or lip syncing to your favorite Women’s Empowerment Song,” and then pass the challenge on by calling out three other inspiring females to do the same.
Ruth gave shout outs to celebrities including Berry, Gabrielle Union, and her Black Panther stars Angela Bassett and Lupita Nyong’o, and the Monster’s Ball actress was quick to respond.
“Oh wow,” Berry commented. “Ruth you gone (sic) make me bring out Oscar !!! Ok challenge accepted!”
On Thursday, she followed through with the challenge by posting footage of herself online, strutting her stuff down a smoke-filled alleyway as she pretended to belt out Survivor, the 2001 smash from Beyonce’s group, Destiny’s Child.
“Thank you @therealruthecarter for challenging me this #WomensHistoryMonth to dance like I d**n well please,” Berry wrote alongside the clip. “This one goes out to the incredible female survivors I have encountered in my life, the women who have the tenacity to live on their own terms. The ones who take risks, hustle hard and will stop at nothing to provide the best life for themselves and the people they love.
“Let’s keep this going! @ciara @kellyrowland @reesewitherspoon I wanna see what you got!!”

Berry wasn’t the only one to respond to Ruth’s lip-syncing task — Union also gamely shared her take on Mary J. Blige’s 1996 heartbreak anthem Not Gon’ Cry, from the Waiting to Exhale soundtrack, as she mimed along to the track while holding her baby girl, Kaavia James.
“So I stretched my hips and accepted this challenge of singing, dancing, and lip syncing to my favorite female empowerment song!” she wrote. “We have all been through something in this life. We’ve all fallen and didn’t want to get up. We’ve had our hearts broken. We’ve all experienced failures. All women share these common truths and we can ALL rise when we stick together and uplift each other. Let’s keep this going and laugh and have fun along the way.”
Union then called upon Chrissy Teigen, Tracee Ellis Ross, and her new L.A.’s Finest co-star Jessica Alba to “keep this challenge going” for the remainder of March.

Also, avoid creating too much tension on your locks from hairstyles that increase breakage over time, such as cornrows or high-tension braiding.
Hairstyle
A soft, smooth pillowcase can help you keep your hairstyle, as well as, your hair. Sleeping on a pillow covered in a textured fabric or low-thread count cotton pillowcase can actually pull your hair and cause it to fall out. Use a smooth pillow-covering, wherever you lay your head and help keep your hair where it belongs.
Many people spend a lot of time and money trying to make their hair look beautiful, to no avail. After applying the suggestions you read in this article, you will finally know exactly what to do to get the hair that you have always dreamed of. Just remember that it takes a little time and patience!
Style Is Key! Great Advice Regarding Fashion
Do you want to learn to dress a little better? There are a lot of people who would like to dress to look their best. Mehandi Designs  The following article contains some great fashion tips you can use when you want to find the clothes that work for your body and lifestyle.
If you are going directly from work to an evening out on the town, take a few makeup basics with you to change your look. Consider darker lipstick and some smoky eye shadow to transform your look. You may also darken your blush a bit, providing some contour for darker time. These three products will ease the transition.
If you wear stockings, keep a small bottle of clear nail polish with you. If you get a snag or run, a small drop of the polish will help stop it before it gets bad. Remember that it only takes a small amount to work so, do not overdo it, or you will have a sticky mess.
If you are not very tall, you should be careful about wearing sweaters that are too long. While you do not want to wear something that is so short that it resembles a cropped top, wearing something with too much length will only make you appear to be much shorter than you actually are.
Don't be afraid to go up a size if it means achieving the perfect fit. It can be quite distressing when you try on your usual size only to find it doesn't fit. Don't fret! Sizes vary from designer to designer and brand to brand, so it is perfectly okay to go up a size from your usual size.
Buy a variety of jewelry pieces. If you have a good number of colors and styles, you will always have something that matches your outfit. You then will not have to worry about purchasing jewelry to match every outfit that you buy. Think variety and you will have more than one option for an outfit.
You do not need to have too much makeup in your kit. Just choose a few colors that match the season. Consider your needs for day and evening applications. Makeup can rot like any other organic material. Germs can also congregate in opened products.
The best time to apply body moisturizer is directly after you shower. Use it before you dry off, or after a gently towel drying. This will help to lock the moisture from the shower into your skin, doubling the benefits of the moisturizer. It will also require that you use less of the product.
Build your wardrobe around basic staples that you can mix and match easily. Some key pieces include a little black dress, a fitted jacket and matching skirt, a tailored pair of slacks in a neutral color and a pair of dark, fitted trouser jeans. These items can take your almost anywhere paired with the right top and/or accessories.
One way to make sure that you look great is to find a specific cut or brand that fits you well and buy multiples of it. This is important because you will not always find that perfect outfit, especially if you are shopping at the last minute. Buy more than one of the same color even, just in case it gets damaged somehow.
Pack lots of neutral colored clothing for vacation; you will be able to wear them all interchangeably. You won't need to worry about mismatched clothes and with a few articles of clothing, you can have many outfits. You can pull your whole look together with a belt, scarf or some other colorful accessory.
Fuller, more defined lips can be achieved with the use of a lip pencil that has been blended with a sponge applicator to avoid hard lines. Apply lip gloss or a little petroleum jelly as the next step. Follow up by accentuating your top lip with a bit more gloss in the center for a pouty look. You can also bring out your lips by matching the color of your lipstick to the color of your eye shadow. You can add a dab to the center of the top and bottom lip.
If you are a mother, fashion is probably the last thing on your mind, But know that it is possible to look good and practical at the same time. Whether taking the kids to the park, sporting events or any other event, spruce up your look with a nice T-Shirt, knee-length skirt and a pair of flat sandals!
Looking your best not only makes you look good, but it helps you to feel better about yourself. It will also cause people to look at your differently and respect you because you look great. Use the tips shared in this article and you can learn to dress great and get the respect that you deserve.

Panmela Castro: Brazil’s graffiti queen, delivering justice through the nozzle of a paint can
(CNN)“I was a victim, but that was a very long time ago.”
Panmela Castro casts her mind back to the day she was beaten.
Like her mother, like her aunts, like many of her friends, the Rio de Janeiro native had become a statistic within an epidemic of violence against women.
Castro remembers going to the police, but there was no law to back her up — at the time, domestic abuse was not a crime in Brazil. The incident was a private matter Castro was told, and no charges were filed.
She says psychological attacks had started shortly after she moved in with her partner. At the time she did not identify it as a form of abuse, but Castro claims the single violent incident was the final straw. She walked away, an act of defiance against Brazil’s cultural landscape, where countless women suffer in silence.
She had become a victim, but would not continue as one.
A trained artist educated at the University of Rio de Janeiro, Castro had been tagging walls using the nom de guerre “Anarkia Boladona”, but now she found herself painting more and more.
Castro recalls how her ex-partner would harass her when she left the house, but creating graffiti with fellow artists, who were overwhelmingly male, offered her a level of protection.
Unlike the calligraphy or macho symbols daubed throughout Rio, Castro’s work was feminine. Something of substance. Something empowering.
A relationship had ended but she’d found her voice.
Now Castro is helping a nation of women find theirs.
A global problem
Globally, 35% of women have experience physical and/or sexual violence in their life, according to the World Health Organization — and for 30% it was at the hands of their partner. In Brazil the problem was particularly acute, allowed to metastasize for generations, with no legal recourse for victims.
It took the case of Maria da Penha to shock policymakers into action. Da Penha’s husband had tried to kill her twice. In May 1983, he shot her in her sleep, leaving her paraplegic and hospitalized. A fortnight after his wife’s return home, he tried to electrocute her in the shower.
Tried and found guilty, he twice successfully appealed. Eventually in 2002 de Penha’s husband was convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison, but walked free after serving a fraction of his sentence.
A two decade-long legal suit filed by da Penha finally resulted in a landmark ruling, taking the Brazilian government to task for failing to prosecute perpetrators of domestic violence to the necessary degree. In August 2006, Federal Brazilian Law 11.340./06, known as the “Maria da Penha Law,” was brought into effect by Luiz Incio Lula da Silva’s government.

The law was not a panacea. It resulted in 331,000 prosecutions and 110,000 final judgments in its first five years, according to the National Council of Justice of Brazil, per UN Women. However, in a country where 41,532 women were murdered between 1997 and 2007, and 10 women were dying every day from domestic violence, systemic abuse was never going to stop overnight.
The new law needed help reaching the people most effected.
Panmela Castro was at hand.
Outlier
The artist turned professional in 2005, and after the summer of 2006 began collaborating with organization Com Causa (“With Cause”), campaigning for women’s rights and publicizing the new law.
“It was easy for me because I knew these streets,” Castro tells CNN.
As a female urban artist Castro was an outlier.
“In order to be accepted you have to pay a high price, because it’s very difficult for women to get into those sorts of groups,” she reflects. “(Men) don’t like the idea of sharing power and being equals with women.”
Despite male graffiti artistsoffering her a form of protection when she was finding her feet, Castro maintains that even today she suffers psychological abuse and sexual harassment from her male counterparts at times.
“One of the reasons I was accepted was because I was good at what I did — internationally renowned … They were forced to accept me.”
There’s a reason Castro has been dubbed “Brazil’s graffiti queen.”
Her murals, low on words but heavy on message, are things of beauty. Often featuring portraits of women, they’re feminine without sexualizing the female body. Sisterhood is frequently suggested in her figures’ intertwined hair, while mythical characters like the goddess Liberty look out across Rio. The biblical Eve, “that unreliable and treacherous woman,” as Castro drolly refers to her, is a mainstay.
Through Castro’s work, women are occupying public spaces in Brazil, reclaiming the streets.
Look close enough and in the corner of one Castro mural you can find an allusion to “vagina dentata” — a folk tale in which a woman’s vagina contains teeth.
The message is clear: this woman bites back.
Spreading the word
There is a limit to what paint alone can do, says the artist.
“My graffiti is talking about justice, violence, women’s advocacy,” Castro says, “but it’s not (going) to make a real change.” Her art has, however, given her a platform to launch what has become her main pursuit: Rede Nami.
Rede Nami was started by Castro in 2010 as a way to educate communities on domestic violence by running workshops for mixed groups of 14-19 year olds, and others for women of any age.
After spending an hour discussing women’s rights, and sometimes sharing experiences of abuse, the group uses the rest of the workshop to create a mural visualizing the issue — it is physical evidence that citizens are taking a stand.

“You can’t really entice people to just talk about their cases,” Castro says. “The graffiti is what makes them want to share. If it was just conversation, people wouldn’t come.”
Over 5,000 people have participated in the workshops so far, some taking place outside Brazil, while the initiative has received support from Amnesty International, Vital Voices and the Brazil Foundation.
Rede Nami has also created a program called AfroGrafiteiras, currently educating 180 Afro-Brazilian women about black feminism, gender and their own rights — as well as training them as street artists.
“All these themes help to fight the macho movement,” she adds.
Celebrity Castro
The initiative has brought Castro celebrity in Brazil, and she’s received numerous global accolades. Listed as one of Newsweek’s 150 Women Who Shake the World and noted as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, Castro can be found hobnobbing with influencers including Diane Von Furstenberg, Oprah Winfrey and Jessica Alba, as well as Brazil’s most famous son, Pele.
She’s been commissioned across the Americas and in Europe by the likes of Nike, Hublot and Avon.
Recently one of her murals in New York featured prominently in coverage of the Women’s March on January 21, she says. A classic Castro design, it depicted two women joined by braided hair, with the message “Women’s Rights are Human Rights.”

She describes a vast faade she has made for the upcoming Urban Nation gallery in Berlin (opening September 2017) as “one of my most special works.”
Performance art
In recent years, Castro has diversified into the field of performance art.
Carrying the flame of the Yugoslavia-born so-called “grandmother of performance art” Marina Abramovic and others, the new medium has allowed her to venture into transgressive territory in a way that her workshops cannot.
A post shared by My life for lovely stalkers (@panmelacastro) on Jul 10, 2016 at 6:24am PDT
For example, in a 2016 performance entitled “Por que?” (“Why?”), Castro — wearing an ostentatious Von Fustemberg dress — carved the title of the piece into her flesh. A similar bloody inscription materialized in “Gentileza Gera Gentileza” (“Kindness Generates Kindness”), when that maxim was etched into her back with a surgical scalpel.
Perhaps Castro’s most visceral act came in 2015. For the past four years she had been incorporating apples into her work, sometimes superimposing a vulva on the fruit, as an allusion to Eve.
Eve’s apple became a permanent fixture for Castro when she had one tattooed on her arm during a piece called “Ruptura,” performed as part of the “Eva” show at the Scenarium Gallery in Rio de Janeiro. The performance began with Castro applying lipstick, before being tattooed, having her head shaved by the audience, and changing into a sharp black suit. (Watch the whole performance here.)
Priscila Duarte, curator of “Eva” and consultant director of Rede Nami, described the performance’s intent: “Panmela breaks with the appearance of the princess girl, the good girl to marry and the exemplary daughter, to become another image that we can no longer define so much, but which I interpret as Renaissance.”
“When we talk about gender, we’re talking about freedom for people to deconstruct their status as women,” Castro explains. But gender, she argues, has become a forbidden word in Brazil’s classrooms. It means there has to be a clear distinction between her output as an artist, and her educational work for RedeNami.
“Most of the dialogue against women happens because people think that women have to be lower (than men). We think that women can be anything they want.”
Fortunately, the teenagers Castro educates, she says, are from a generation “open to learning and respecting women.”
“Before you’d have to fight for your rights, fight to be protected,” she says. “Today you fight to maintain those laws.”
Armed with a spray can and an indomitable persona, it’s hard to imagine Castro anywhere but the frontlines.
