THE ROARING TWENTIES (1929) | Written + Directed by Taylor Swift *ALL-TALKING PICTURE* Flapper Clara falls in love. With a Princeton sophomore. Every night they spend together feels like a dream. All the social occasions, the scent of wine she tasted on his lips, dance floor reflecting broken mirrorball lights, tossing pennies in the pool, sneaking in campus, night walks around the Nassau Hall, joking about school dorms, long dinner that seems never end and sophisticated conversations. His innocence and passion. Her wide-eyed gazes. Breathes that felt too close in the dark. Finally, one day, the kid went down on his knees and pulled that damned rock out of his pocket. Will Clara say "yes"?

Holy shit, reading that anon (Jamie is son-shaped to Ted, but Ted is not father-shaped to Jamie) and your answer (how and why Ted fails Jamie every single time) I realized just how much, on the other hand, Jamie and Roy GET each other.
Roy gives Jamie direct instructions on how to become better and win his praise, not only with the training and diet regimen in S3, but back in S2 when Roy comes up with a literal signal, to tell Jamie exactly what to do and when. That's what Jamie responds best to, what he'd been seeking all throughout S2, and somehow Roy just knew.
And Jamie, he never pushes Roy to speak when he senses something is wrong. What he does is, he offers himself up first, honestly and openly, expecting nothing in return, but creating such a supportive environment that Roy naturally starts to open up (ironically, very similar to Ted's approach to Roy lmao).
In Amsterdam he knew that Roy was just taking his negative emotions out on him, and instead of challenging him, Jamie just went along with it, apologizing for being a dick first, sharing his memories of Amsterdam (good and bad), and finally calling Roy out lightly ("you're just taking it out on me"), in passing. And it did not make Roy defensive because until that point Jamie had offered Roy so much of himself, that instead of closing up, Roy naturally let go and was finally honest, with himself and with Jamie (if briefly).
I mean, Jamie taught Roy to ride a bike "for grandad!" but that wasn't enough, he still apologized for being a dick when he made fun of him. Our boy has become so emotionally mature 😭 (ep 12 doesn't exist, thank you very much)
These bitches get each other in a way no other character does. Even Keeley, as much as the fandom likes to ignore all her flaws and paint her as perfect, had serious communication issues with Roy, where she did not respect his privacy (airing dirty laundry in front of his literal boss and colleagues), and pushed him to talk when it came to something very delicate (the funeral and death in general). And Roy was the one to apologize, which made me very upset (particularly in the first instance).
I honestly can't see something like that happening with Roy and Jamie.
Fingers crossed for a spinoff, but even if it never becomes a canon romantic ship, Roy & Jamie would work extremely well in a Ted & Beard dynamic.
They just belong with each other.
(again, ep 12 where Beard leaves Ted's side and Ted doesn't even attend Beard's wedding doesn't exist ☺)
you're sooo correct. Jamie and Roy innately understand one another <3 Amsterdam is the perfect example of this because Jamie absolutely knows Roy is using him to air out his negative emotions, but Roy also knows Jamie's hyper-positivity is masking something else. They both have the right read on one another there, I think, and they both have the patience to draw the other out until they're ready to talk!
And the scene where they finally open up to one another is just soooo good from start to finish. Like, not only does Roy handle Jamie's tragic backstory reveal perfectly (i cannot say that enough, because god he does a really great job there), but then he finally opens up about what's bothering him, too! And I think because we focus so much on how majorly vulnerable it was of Jamie to tell Roy his red light district story, we don't ever talk enough about how majorly vulnerable Roy let himself be afterwards, too. Like, I think after Jamie dropped something so traumatic, it would have been particularly easy for Roy to have dismissed his own stuff as like, 'well I can't hardly say what's bothering me is just that the ex I broke up with has moved on and it's upsetting me. Not after he just dropped that, can I?' Like, especially given Roy's personality, I think his first instinct there was probably to minimize his own feelings and to dismiss his problems with Keeley as being so trivial and irrelevant compared to Jamie's Real Problems, and then to not talk about it at all and quietly simmer. So it's a true sign of just how much he trusts Jamie (as well as feels bad for using him as his punching bag all day) that he doesn't do any of that but instead properly opens up to him for the first time. And then Jamie realizes how monumental that is right away, and he's not dismissive either!!
Another scene I've been thinking about is the one where Jamie tells Phoebe that Isaac is his best friend and not Roy. Because like, on the one hand it's obviously mostly playful ribbing meant to rile up Roy (because Roy is quite obviously his actual best friend at that point). But I think there's also that underlying understanding from Jamie that Roy struggles with admitting how much he cares and loves people and he struggles to put a name to his feelings, etc. Jamie understands that, and he's okay with that, so I think his joke there is also his way of saying like, it's okay if you can't label this quite yet, whatever's between us - best friends or something else - it's okay if you're not ready for that. It's his way of giving Roy an out if he needs it. (this could also be bogus and me reading too much into everything lmao but like!!! something to consider)
Everything to me <33

lol anon back (same anon that listed why Rami is amazing)! I got more 🙃
He’s our clumsy king and owns it
He fell at the Oscars, fell/pushed off a side railing, did parkour only to fall when he started running on the ground (it was a Mr. Robot blooper), fell backwards in a fucking chair, and tripped during the Red Carpet at the Met Gala. This man literally trips over air and himself but we still love him ❤️
Spending time with Emma who is non-binary
Literally does make a difference because it helps non-binary people feel like they’re noticed!
Puts so much thought and consideration i to his characters and roles!
Just think about all he had to do for “The Pacific”, “Mr. Robot”, and “Bohemian Rhapsody”! Definitely lots of dedication and hard work and passion for his roles, like wow.
Rami’s hair
Never gets old and I love his curly hair era! Also wavy hair too! Wonderful hair lol
He has great expectations for his roles
In an interview, Rami was asked if he was happy about “Night at the Museum” casting a pharaoh correctly. Rami’s reaction literally said, “that shouldn’t be something to be super overly happy about, it should just be casted correctly”. Good expectations honestly.
Rami was the side character for so damn long and steals every scene he’s in
Rami is literally amazing in all scenes he does and even if he’s not the main character, all eyes are on him (at least mine are 😌)
He’s one of the best versatile actors I think I’ll ever witness!
This man has literally played: a gay teenager who was crushing on his best friend
traumatized war veteran who has a thick Cajun accent
an iconic and memorable lead band singer
Alcatraz prisoner who plays the violin
ancient mummy pharaoh that comes to life at night
hacker with d.i.d and ptsd
a doctor named Adam Terry
random dude in Battle Ship
a vampire with a cool scarf
a mountain man and in real life Rami gets the chance to squabble in a tiny boat with his identical twin lmao (best sibling fight we’ll ever witness, @the-real-ramimalekpeen have you used this scene for Twin Tuesday yet?)
a 6’0 tall guy in a video game who was said to most likely have schizophrenia
a dude with a beard
a weirdo guy in the literal fucking show “BoJack Horseman”
and like so many other characters I’m choosing not to describe
Already said he was a “bad boy” and pranks people but he’s literally really funny
Have you seen him in different interviews? Such a charmer and pretty funny as well.
Like the interview with Charlie Hunnam where there was a question about Rami’s eye color and he and Charlie were teasing each other and trying to find out Rami’s eye color. Then some pictures are also pretty funny.
Also the “DoLittle” game with Robert Downey Jr (Rami’s whole outfit and appearance during the Ellen Show with Robert Downey Jr 😩👌 literally here for his outfit, freaking immaculate lmao)
“wE sHot LiVe aiD oN dAy onE”
That’ll be in my head forever, thanks Rami
“A playful smooch”
I don’t think I’ll recover from the shocked looks on everybody’s faces when Rami exposed how he had a kiss with Daniel Craig.
His fans are wonderful
This man has the best real fans. Which includes the fan artists, fanfic writers, and people who just appreciate him and/or his films! also people who stand up for him which is YOU Flipper and RamiPeen 👏
Photo shoots
How can you look at his photo shoots and NOT smile??? Precious but also sexy man.
Again he has a literal soft spot for children
That one time where I’m pretty sure he read a book to a few children
Best hugs
He seriously gives the sweetest and warmest hugs. Like can I get a hug?? 🫂
Oppenheimer moments
I don’t care what anyone says about his role in Oppenheimer. He had literally eight minutes of screen time yet still went for the fucking jugular and was successful.
The bulge
He has no shame and no, I won’t expand on this except… @the-real-ramimalekpeen 😉
Doesn’t give a fuck about haters
Lmao y’all hated Rami in Amsterdam and thought his character was stupid? Well he probably doesn’t give a shit (or is obliviously living his best life) lmao.
Ages like fine wine
God he looks like he’s in his fucking thirties in so many pictures. Raise your hand if you ever looked at a picture of him and thought, “oh a picture when he was in his twenties!” and it turns out the picture was taken in his fucking 40s… a few days ago… Unproblematic people age perfectly.
His smile makes me smile
Could he be any cuter??? His smile literally is so wonderful.
Most caring thing you’ll see all day and is husband material
When he was giving Emma his jacket, comforting the woman (friend) who was crying and thanking the waitress, and so many other events 🥺
Okay anyways got even more than this lol… sorry for rambling on about our Rami. I’m just so happy I finally get the chance to share my Rami findings and thoughts I’ve collected over the years.
I love your love for him!

obligatory 6am episode thoughts (and MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF TED LASSO SPOILERS)
so far it's ep2 > ep1 > ep3 imo. this episode was basically the start of various plotlines but didn't have any big moments for any of them, so it's a little 🤷
ngl, hated zava with a passion and all of his scenes were cringe and boring to me. we already went over the dick star player arc in season 1 with jamie, and zava purposely has less redeeming moments (because he doesn't have a three-season story ahead of him). this plot could only be interesting if it leads to a break in format or character development: ted yelling and giving up on a player / rebecca firing him despite the wins because she cares about the team / west ham drama.
I was SO FOND of colin and michael in this episode!!! they were sweet but not over the top and those moments were literally so far removed from the rest of colin's scenes in the ep, which just stresses how long colin has been hiding this. really liked michael coming to sam's restaurant and their collaborative cover story, because I'm pretty tired of gay relationship drama being one dude angry that the other one is "ashamed" of him. framing the media as their enemy and not each other is a good start.
speaking of which: trent. big sigh. could SO see that plot coming from all of the interviews mentioning trent as both a good and bad presence in richmond. idk if he'd actually out colin, because it'd be hard to come back from that in the eyes of the audience, but there's definitely drama coming and SOMEONE is going to either out colin or threaten him with it, leading to him coming out himself. could be rupert, and that'd be the start of nate realizing he's gone too far. either way that's one plotline I'm hella excited for.
that being said, if michael ends up outing then, I'm 🤡
I simply do not know what to make of tish's predictions. rebecca being upside down and drenched is foreshadowing the amsterdam episode, and whoever saves her (probably ted) would be the knight/shite. but being a mother? obviously not biologically, since hannah explicitly said it's no longer an option. so... tedbecca future???? I'm not even a shipper, I honestly can't see who else she could adopt. rupert's daughter somehow? idefk
jamie was my fave this episode, followed closely by roy. thank god for that bromance, and all of jamie's sudden vocabulary moments were laughing out loud funny. praying for a shot of him reading a dictionary and explaining his sudden word knowledge 😂 am Not Amused at the scene by the bar where keeley looks at them both, but we shall see. I'm actually kinda here for a jamie/shandy thing? their vibes sort of fit lmao. also YES to sam and his chef falling in love. let the man have some happiness and normalcy!
the ted/sassy ongoing hints confuse me, and their purpose escapes me even three seasons later. remind us ted can fuck? I don't feel like it's an endgame thing.
I'm not touching the jake thing with a ten feet pole, jfc. jake seems like a nice guy in theory, but going out with your patient/marriage counselor + not telling your co-parent that you're bringing a new man into your kid's life? no. michelle is on thin ice with me.

it just ocurred to me that we leyrens arent the only ones being let down. now i realize its not a matter of favorites or protagonists, its a matter of the writers being bad at making couples in general. aside from them cutting leyrens crucial dialogues and simply avoiding an earnest conversation about the bribe (dont get me started on the offscreen kiss i might as well pass out), we have sharpwin with a bunch of phone calls and everything being about max as usual, whatever the hell is going on with floyd, lyn and claude (rip evie) and the disservice they did to iggy and martin, who used to be the most stable pairing of the entire show. i kinda feel bad for sharpwins because i can feel the wedding will be all over the place (someone on twitter said helen might get married wearing a leather skirt lmao) and the fact that they exchanged a racist castle for a racist hospital rooftop is sad, helen did deserve something nice even if it was in ny. anyway, im happy/unhappy to realize that all couples in this show are equally built on unnecessary drama and crumbs of joy
there's a lot of inner peace and enjoyment to be found when we accept that new amsterdam is not a particularly well written show. like don't get me wrong, the writers definitely TRY their best but. the skill level is not there to execute the ideas they have sometimes lol (saved for my bias opinion of the stronger writers in the room but they're unfortunately relegated to story editors who only get to write one episode a season). but that honestly makes it easy to live with these storylines knowing that it's not out of malicious intent.
but yes, everyone's storyline and the overall cohesiveness of the show took a nose dive this season. of the main characters, helen taking the brunt of it since she went from her own individual identity to just being max's romantic interest and somehow London, which was suppose to be able her character backstory and development, was monopolized and then sidelined by max's story. Frankly I think of all the Bad Cards that were dealt out this season, lauren made it through decently. For as stupid as the donation plot and then the visa drama was, at least we saw some kind of consistency and end goal with what the writers had planned for her growth through this conflict. Tbh if the writers had allocated just a handful more scenes and screentime to lauren and leyla's story this season, it could've been a well done story. But the moments they chose to cut and be referenced in conversations instead (leyla coming to floyd about a rec letter, lauren tell leyla about her triggers, the additional money drop moments they had where lauren was more at ease) ended up making pacing feel rushed. Though I will say, I disagree about them avoiding earnest conversations about the donation because I think leyla said her piece in 4x10 and lauren said hers in 4x13. What's left and what I'd like to see is their conversation on how they move forward from it and I'm (probably foolishly) hopeful we'll get that in the finale.
ah well it is what it is. we've got one more episode left in the season and hopeful it's a good sign for better things to come in s5

Fascinating things that come to light in The Goldfinch (2019) movie and just things I liked
The most distinct thing to me was all of the parallels between characters in Theo’s life (mostly Boris and everyone else)
Theo wakes up alone in a nightmare both at his stay with the Barbours and during his engagement to Kitsey, paralleled with the scene where Boris comforts him and urges him back to sleep (a scene that is actually much longer than I would have expected Cr*wley to do)
Blurring Kitsey and focusing on Boris in the background at his engagement party
Theo finding out about Kitsey cheating on him, only to come to terms with the fact that neither of them loved each other and their relationship is a relationship of convenience, only to run into Boris-- someone he actually loves and knows that he does. Kitsey proposes they stay together to make other people (like her mother) happy. In the car that night with Boris, Boris can only focus on what would make Theo happy.
“I have no family, no friends-” vs. “I took conversational Russian. Because of you. It made me think of you.”
Pippa crying about how they can’t lean on each other and then Theo going off to Amsterdam with Boris based on pure trust, followed by literally being supported by Boris during his attempted suicide.
Ansel acting his goddamn HEART out for two and a half hours because book Theo is so fucking closed off  and always internally monologuing but the movie needs a way to indicate reactions to things, unlike book Theo who’s go-to is the this is fine meme
It’s much easier to see how Theo would get hooked on drugs when you watch the movie compared to the spaced-out incidents in the book. The morphine lollipop, the pill from Ms. Barbour, and the pills from Xandra. Boris’ encouragement was just icing on a cake that was already there.
I’m sorry but Finn Wolfhard’s little “ha!” is so cute and there’s a scene where Aneurin does it too lmao
Finn’s accent isn’t even bad lmao the movie even mentions that Boris comes from all over. He’s gotta fucked up accent anyways.
John Cr*wley said boreo is reductive yet left out all the straightest parts about Boris??? No kotku, talks about sleeping with girls, or the weird ass scene about his “wife and kids” (put in quotes because there’s discourse about whether Boris was lying or not. Just a half-assed scene of Boris staring at Xandra and commenting how hot she is. Finn Wolfhard really tried with that one but boy was that awkward to watch.
In the movie the only people that kiss Theo are the people he actually loves and that’s Mrs. Barbour (on the cheek) and Boris send tweet
This is something that other people have already talked about on here in regards to book analysis but the parallels between all of the dead things, old things, lifeless things (antiques, the barbours, engagement to kitsey) and Boris being a feral yet tender force of motion is oof. Book Theo speaks about how he loves Boris because of how alive he really is, and how he doesn’t feel defined by his surroundings or his actions. Ansel Elgort's shy yet excited expressions really show the awe that Theo feels surrounded by so much life (Aneurin’s Boris).
“Theo. Swim.”
“Theo. Stand.”
Finn Wolfhard and Aneurin Barnard’s lonnggg looks at Theo bye Alexa play Codex by Radiohead
The hand touching by the pool.
Boris rubbing Theo’s back when he made him throw up.
Vibe check (the really long forehead touch thing)
Boris and Theo holding hands and crying during Boris’ good vs bad speech at the end. Ansel and Aneurin really said fuck John Cr*wley huh.
Playing Apocalypse by Cigarettes After Sex during the Pippa and Theo dinner scene is homophobic
Phenomenal casting. They all fucking killed it. But here are the scenes I felt everyone did the best in
Oakes: “It was my fault” scene by the pool
Finn: “I need to tell you something” and his trying to beg Theo to stay. Honorable mention from the strong switch from relaxed boy watching movies to angsty child facing his dad. That scene kicked my ass I wanted to throw up when his dad started literally kicking the crap out of him. God.
Ansel: He was truly great, I can’t imagine how hard it must be playing Theo fucking Decker. But he shined in the Civics Textbook reveal scene.
Aneurin: The car scene. Talking about how guilty he is then going from devastated to disbelief to anger to devastated again. Jesus christ. Also his little smiles in the movie? The small one that he uses only half his mouth for. Welsh excellence.
Ashleigh: The dinner date. Of course. Girl had me wanting to cry in the club.
The book talks about this in a way that might seem odd or strange for someone to hear, but the movie actually makes it make more sense
After the death of his mother, everyone treats Theo with a light touch and kid gloves and hushed voices. Like he is very fragile. You can tell he wants to pretend things are normal with the conversation he strikes up with  Tom Cable-- like nothing has happened. The way Boris responds to hearing about the death of Theo’s mother is very relaxed. He cares, sure, but Boris’ life is so equally fucked up that he’s like eh that’s life. He doesn’t think Theo is weaker for what has happened to him. He takes Theo’s trauma in stride-- seeing it as a way they’re connected rather than separated. In the book, Theo is grateful for Boris’ blasé way of handling the news and the movie really highlights that scene well, with Boris’ little “ha!” and subject change followed with Oakes’ little smile of relief.
I hope this doesn’t suggest that Boris doesn’t care about what happened to Theo, that is blatantly untrue and counteracted by Boris’careful listening of Theo’s “secret”, his gentle inquiring if Theo misses his Mom at their Thanksgiving, and of course with his patience and physical comfort regarding Theo’s nightmares.
I could talk even longer about the nuances that are missed in the movie without the book but I wanted to be positive :)
