Note
I actually would consider Lysithea as Houses! Claude's other best friend rather than Lorenz just like I wouldn't say Ferdinand is Edelgard's other best friend(I'd say it's Dorothea tbh). Lorenz inherently splits on Claude in most Houses! timelines unlike Lysithea & Claude's A support with Lysithea is Claude expressing that Lysithea is very uniquely dear to him whereas with Lorenz it's more about mutual respect. There's stronger feelings at least from Claude to Lysithea versus Claude to Lorenz. What do you think
I think that each character in the Deer in uniquely close to Claude in their own way. I don't think best friend is the best way to have described Lorenz's relationship to Claude, but it's hard to come up with another descriptor that describes their closeness without putting rank into play.
I mentioned it before, but when Claude faces down Dimitri in Three Hopes he takes Hilda and Lorenz to do so, which to me indicates that Claude relies upon him greatly. Each house has sort of a "right and left hand man" kind of deal with the retainer and a rival? Hubert and Ferdinand and Dedue and Felix, being what comes to mind for me. It's different for Claude, purposefully, because Hilda is a retainer in name only and again more of a friend (not to say that Dedue and Hubert are not their Lord's friend, they very much are, but that for them "retainer" is an actual role with duties while Hilda's just prevents recruitment in all routes) and Lorenz's rivalry with Claude ends up with them being equals.
When you say "split" I assume you mean endings and not recruitment? I think that Lorenz and Claude build up that respect partially because of the mutual fondness they develop for each other during Three Houses. Their A support shows off the high opinion they have of each other; the way Lorenz is able to be critical in good faith and fondness while Claude is able to be trusting and open. The whole conflict between them initially was Claude appearing out of nowhere to take the reigns of the Alliance, and the A support shows just how far they've come--that while Lorenz would not hesitate to step up to the plate, he refuses to let Claude disappear or die on him so that they can shape the future together.
Even though their A support ends up with them physically separate from each other, the fact that they're both strong leaders meeting on equal grounds to shape the future they both want.
I think the relationship between Claude and Lorenz and Claude and Lysithea is very different, and thus hard to compare. On the surface, it seems similar; they both have fond antagonism and worry in their supports, but politics and dreams of the future really define Claude and Lorenz's support chain in a way it doesn't for him and Lysithea.
Actually, I think the most interesting thing about that support chain is the fact that Claude never tries to sus out Lysithea's secrets. At least three other support chains with Lysithea involve heavy discussion of her two crests (Lindhardt comes to mind, as well as Edelgard), but Claude, who's entire support chain with Marianne centers around her secrets (and eventually apologizing by revealing one of his own), isn't particularly interested in what she's hiding.
(Although, and not to tangent--Marianne's secret and Claude's own are much more similar in that if they get out they would both fear for harm coming to their person's. Although Marianne's makes her feel like a monster and Claude's does not even though other people might want him to be.)
I think Claude and Lysithea do have a very close relationship! I think Lystithea is uniquely dear to him, but I think all the Deer are. Lysithea definitely holds a special place in his heart (and in my soul I think any child of his with a Fodlan name would probably be named after her), but I don't think there's much to get comparing her relationship with him to Lorenz? Even putting their support chains aside.
Lysithea is a character who very much believes she is going to die young, and is desperately trying to wrap up her affairs before she does so. Despite this, it doesn't really have a baring on her relationship with Claude aside from the fact that it's her unseen motivation to work herself so hard.
I will say, their A support ending is adorable and super romantic. I think Claude abandoning his post for her says a lot about their relationship--he's not entrusting his dream to her, but rather taking it out of his own hands in order to ensure that she will be apart of the future he envisions. Insane. I love love.
All of Claude's paired endings involve him working with the person he loves to achieve his dream. While some are comparable (while I don't ship them, I think Hilda working hard to be good at diplomacy so that she could help Claude improve relations between Almyra and Fodlan is absolutely adorable) in their intensity, I think Lorenz and Lysithea's actually really are not. Because, really, while Claude is trusting an unknown family member to his throne in Almyra when he abdicates to be with Lysithea, who is he trusting Fodlan to but Byleth and Lorenz (and all their other friends of course).
Again, as I've said before, it's hard to compare some of the relationships (particularly romantic ones) in three houses purely based on the fact that a big feature of this game is that every character needs to be able to end up with Byleth or another one of their friends
It's really hard to discern where exactly the relationships between Lysithea and Claude and Lorenz and Claude differ in closeness, but I think I've come to this conclusion:
Lorenz is Claude's other "best friend" in the Deer, not because he's closer to Lorenz then anyone else, but because Lorenz is the one meant to fill the rival role of left-hand man, in the way Ferdinand does for Edelgard.
I agree with you, Lysithea and Claude are very close in a way that differs from their relationships with other people. I just don't think that Lysthiea fills the narrative role that Lorenz does.
(I do think Claude names a kid of his after her, if you don't chose their ending.)
#twila talks#twila answers#fe3h#lysithea von ordelia#claude von riegan#lorenz hellman gloucester#thank you for the ask anon i really enjoyed writing this#i'm not sure if i came to an acceptable conclusion but i think it's important in three houses esp#to acknowledge the frame work and narrative aspects of the gameplay#jeralt is as they say: doomed by the narrative haunting the narrative narrating the narrative lmao#I can't really compare claude's relationship with anyone to hilda and lorenz because they are his narratively assigned right and left men#and do a great job at it considering the golden deer have much more non traditional versions of that role compared to the other houses#in a world with just platonics i think claude and lysithea are more likely than claude and lorenz to just hang out in a non formal setting#alone i mean#trying to establish that i think they're besties while also clarifying the narrative role i meant in my previous post lol#i also don't want to diminish how much lysithea is relied upon by claude both in universe and out of universe#out of universe i mean me specifically using the leonie felix lysithea stride dance warp combo to one turn post timeskip levels with claude#or lysithea just casually nuking people in one hit when you play her in any stage of the game i love her#even at the roundtable i think the ordelia's probably provide Claude with a support due in part to lysithea herself#although again her family is similarly to lorenz cautious about the empire during the war since they're a border territory and well. you kn#TO CONCLUDE. FOR REAL THIS TIME I SWEAR#lorenz is claude's narrative assigned best friend (left hand man) and does a good job of that and i didn't fully clarify that in the previo#post. Dancer Class Advices
Who to avoid
Characters who are not available on a certain route should not partake in the White Heron Cup if you plan to play that particular route. (Duh!) These are as follows:
Flayn on Crimson Flower
Edelgard on Silver Snow
Hubert on Silver Snow
There are also characters who will have to be re-recruited after the time skip and they only appear several chapters in, meaning you can make them your dancer, but you won’t have access to them for 2-4 chapters. These are:
Dedue
Ashe on Silver Snow & Verdant Wind
Lorenz on Silver Snow & Azure Moon
Dedue is a special case. If you did not complete his paralogue during the school phase he will not return to you at all.
Things to consider when choosing a dancer
There are pros and cons to every character but it ultimately comes down to what your average combat situation looks like.
If your dancer is used purely for support and kept out of trouble most of the time their bulk does not matter.
But if you need your dancer to take multiple hits because you throw them into the thick of battle along with your best units you might want to use somebody with decent bulk or avoid. Mind that the dancer class has -5% growth rates in Str, Def and Res.
If your dancer spends a lot of time trying to catch up to the rest of the party, because you have only horses and fliers, using a unit with long range attacks or assists might be a good idea. However, that issue can be avoided by equipping your dancer with a March Ring and giving them the Shoes of the Wind stat booster.
Relevant Skills & Stats
Swords - The dancer class grants bonus experience to Swords, the Sword Avo +20 Skill and the Sword Dance combat art, making them the weapon of choice. Moreover, it’s the only weapon they will make a little dance with after a kill or level up.
Authority - The other skill this class gives an experience bonus to. The lowered growth rates make equipping a strong battalion a good idea. In case you want to equip your dancer with one of the dancer battalions, the Opera Co. Volunteers require a B rank and the Blue Lion Dancers an A rank.
Faith/Reason - Dancers can use magic and if a class can use magic you should consider utilizing it. Some of the utility spells in Faith can give the dancer an opportunity to do something even when they cannot reach an ally in that turn. Physic, first and foremost.
Riding - Upon reaching an A+ in Riding you get the Movement +1 Ability. This is useful to patch up the previously mentioned movement problem in the late game.
Charm - A character needs at least 13 Charm to win the White Heron Cup. Beyond that, a dancer needs Charm for 2 things: avoiding Gambits and Sword Dance. Getting hit by a Gambit means the dancer won’t be able to move, which is something you should avoid at all cost. You get 5 Gambit Avoid for every point of charm you have. The value of Charm increases with difficulty. The damage of Sword Dance scales off of Charm. Don’t fret about this too much, though, since you probably want to dance most of the time anyway.
The Candidates
Flayn - Squishy type (below 40 Spd growth and at least one poor defensive stat). The original “I don’t know what to do with them so I might as well make them a dancer“ character. Has a talent in Faith and a budding talent in Reason. Boosting her movement by leveling Riding will prove difficult since she has a weakness in it. Might need some stat boosters to patch up her middling Spd. But has the highest Res in the game. And a pretty high Charm, too. You could give her a Levin Sword and go Sword Dance on the opponents’ collective assess. Oh, wait, we were supposed to be dancing.
Black Eagles:
Edelgard - Balanced type (40 or above Spd growth with good defenses). Has bonkers stat growths, therefore the -5% to Str/Def/Res don’t hurt her too much. Has talents in Swords, Authority and Reason. Personally, I’m biased against Armored classes due to their bad movement, cruddy Spd and Res, so I’d say her unique endgame class should be changed for something more worthwhile. Dancer is a valid option.
Dorothea - Speedy type (40 or above Spd growth with at least one poor defensive stat). Tailored to be a dancer, with talents in Swords and Magic. Her budding talent gives her White Magic Avo +20 and she learns Physic for that ranged heal in case she can’t dance. Has a weakness in Riding, though.
Ferdinand - Speedy type. Has a talent in Swords. His personal skill gives him Avo +15 at full HP. His talent in Riding can make it easier to get that +1 Movement ability. The ability to use magic is wasted on this guy. But he 11/10 wants the job just so he can do the Sword Dance.
Linhardt - Balanced type. Has a talent for both types of magic and comes with Physic. Not a bad choice in terms of overall stats, except for his horrendous Charm. May be better off as your main healer.
Petra - Speedy type. Oh, boy, is she! Has a talent in Swords. But also a weakness in both types of magic and her stats reflect that, both offensively and defensively. So, that’s wasted potential there.
Hubert - Speedy type. Talent in Reason and Authority. Weakness in Faith. Great Res. Probably your main magic nuke and would likely hate you for making him a dancer.
Bernadetta - Speedy type. Weakness in Swords but a budding talent in Riding, which gives her Pass. Learns Physic (with a 20% Mag growth, PFFFT!). ngl I’d just let her stay in her room and forget about her.
Caspar - Speedy type. Weakness in Magic and Authority. No relevant talents. Cruddy Charm stat. He’s bad but he’s bad at everything else, too. (This is going to be a trend with the “Heavy” of each house.)
Blue Lions:
Dimitri - Speedy type. Has a talent in Swords and Authority but a weakness in Reason (and magic in general). A little more hurt by the negative growths of the class since his Res is already bad. Budding talent in Riding. He might be better off as your main damage dealer, though, because he’s such a beast and the movement of his unique class is at least okay.
Felix - Speedy type. Talent in Swords and a budding talent in Reason (though his Mag growth isn’t all that great), but weak in Authority and his Charm is below average. You’ll likely want to equip him with his Relic, which means you cannot equip him with the March Ring.
Sylvain - Balanced type. Has a budding talent in Reason from which he gets Black Magic Avo +20 (his Mag growth is below average, however). Talent in Riding. Learns Physic. Amazing color scheme. “This is what a real man looks like.“
Ingrid - Balanced type. Has a talent in Swords and Riding and comes with Physic. High Charm. Great pick due to above-average defenses and godly Spd. She doesn’t hit all that hard anyway.
Ashe - Speedy type. No relevant talents. Bad Charm stat. Physic. Looks adorable. You are better off giving him a bow and putting him on a pony.
Annette - Squishy type. Talent in Reason and Authority. Makes an okay dancer in my experience but you should keep her out of harm’s way.
Mercedes - Squishy type. With great Res. Talented in both types of Magic but weakness in Swords. Learns Physic. She’s better off as your healer.
Dedue - Meh type. Weakness in Faith and Riding. Highest Def among all characters but abysmally slow. His Res is horrible and so is his Charm. If you want to make him a dancer then, ironically, this wall of a man will have to stay in the back most of the time so he won’t get picked off by bird men with jazz hands.
Golden Deer:
Claude - Speedy type. Has a talent in Swords and Authority but weakness in Faith. His personal skill gives him Pass. Best personal endgame class! Why would you want him to be anything else? He looks great as a dancer? Fair point. Has a ridiculous Charm stat, second only to Edelgard.
Lorenz - Balanced type. Talent in Reason and Riding. Has the same defenses as Ingrid but trades Luck and Spd for HP and better offenses. i.e. he won’t dodge as often but is pretty durable. Makes up for lack of Charm with excessive tea parties. Gets disowned over losing the dance competition.
Ignatz - Speedy type. Talent in Swords and Authority and budding talent in Reason. Learns Physic. His Charm is pretty bad. I had trouble even promoting the guy.
Lysithea - Speedy type. Has talents in both types of Magic, Authority and a budding talent in Swords. However, her Charm stat reflects her personality. Better off as a magic nuke. I mean, how else are you going to collect those Dark Seals?
Marianne - Speedy type. With great Res. Talented in Swords, Faith and Riding. Comes with Physic. Has a sword Relic. Has good Charm. Not a bad choice but, admittedly, looks 60% better as a Gremory. (That dark blue dress looks so nice!)
Leonie - Speedy type. Talent in Riding and learns Physic. Statwise, very similar to Petra. Her Mag and Res are horrendous. More Charm-ing than people will give her credit for. Still wants to bang my dad, probably.
Hilda - Speedy type. Weakness in Faith and Authority. No relevant talents. Bad with magic. Highest Charm stat of all non-lord characters. A delicate maiden who should really just cheer on her class mates from the sidelines and is totally not better off being sat on a flying lizard to one-shot people.
Raphael - Meh type. Weakness in Reason and Riding. No relevant talents. Statwise similar to Dedue.
Conclusion
For Black Eagles my top picks are Dorothea,  Edelgard or Ferdinand. For Blue Lions definitely Ingrid. Followed by Sylvain or Felix. And for Golden Deer I’d honestly go with Flayn. But for students I’d pick either Lorenz, Marianne or Hilda.

Fire Emblem Three Houses: School Clubs
(sorry this is so long)
Black Eagles
Edelgard: Debate Team Captain, but she has to remember to keep up her cover; some of those debates hit home and she gets a little too passionate. She’s also a Volunteer Animal Caretaker, showing her soft side for cats.
Hubert: Considers joining Edelgard on the Debate Team, but he doesn't want to seem suspicious so he joins the Paranormal Investigation Club and ends up being unanimously voted Vice President. To everyone’s shock, he’s also a Volunteer Animal Caretaker, having a love for the pegasus.
Caspar: No doubt, he joins the recreational Brawling Team. He and Raphael hit it off and become great pals and rivals, often eating together with...concerning voraciousness.
Lindhart: Philosophy Society, but he tends to just rant and immediately pass out whenever it's someone else's turn to speak. He considers joining the Mindfulness and Meditation group but gets sleepy just thinking of it...and is actually pretty terrible at yoga.
Dorothea: Of COURSE she's in the Theater Department! It's canon! She tries to take a junior director role so other students can have a chance at big roles. She also assists the Choir and Dancer Society
Petra: She's one of the few non-Golden Deer students on the recreational Archery Team. She's excited when the other students ask for her to demonstrate Brigid archery techniques. And when Claude establishes the International Culture Society, she joins to give first hand information.
Bernadetta: She wants to stay in her room clubless, but when she hears about the Crafts Club, she gets a little excited and decides to check it out. Mercedes' comforting aura is perfect for making Bernie comfortable enough to participate, and she even convinces Bernie to check out the Gardening Club despite her fear of Dedue, and even joins the Writing & Literature Club...anonymously, by submitting her work when nobody is around to see her. She wanted to be a Volunteer Animal Caretaker, but was too intimidated by the sheer number of other members.
Ferdinand: Debate Team Vice-Captain...and mad about it. Starts so many "example debates" with Edelgard for the other members that it tends to get out of hand. Also joins the Dancer Society, much to Dorothea’s displeasure.
Blue Lions
Dimitri: At first he considers some of the more intense clubs, like Debate or the Young Knight’s Union, but after encouraging Dedue to be in the club he really wanted, Dimitri joins the academy's Mindfulness and Meditation group. He's kind of nervous at first, but Claude helps him relax. It does wonders for his mental health.
Dedue: With Dimitri's encouragement, he becomes President of the Gardening and Cooking clubs. Just being a regular member of more than one club is usually a handful, but these are both super chill, so his job is easy.
Annette: Another multi-club student, she participates in Choir as well as the Young Mages Society. She also stops in to check on Mercedes in the Cooking Club, but was...discouraged from joining by the dining hall staff.
Mercedes: She’s balancing quite a few clubs! She’s the founding member and President of the Paranormal Investigation Club and Crafts Club, as well as the baking expert of the Cooking Club and a member of the Young Mages Society. And on top of all that, she’s a Volunteer Animal Caretaker.
Sylvain: He jokingly suggests a Singles Club and is immediately turned down by Seteth. So instead he ends up joining the Writing & Literature Club, much to the surprise of everyone. Ends up being Bernadetta’s biggest fan.
Ingrid: Of course she joins the Young Knight’s Union! She loves being surrounded by others who value chivalry and honor codes as much as she does. On that note she also joins the Writing & Literature Club, gushing about her favorite knight tales.
Felix: At first he declares he wants nothing to do with recreational activities, claiming it distracts from training. But then the academy’s recreational Fencing/Dueling (swords) Team tells him that if he joins, he can participate in competitions with other academies from across Fodlan. He becomes their star member in no time.
Ashe: Absolutely the President of the Writing & Literature Club, as well as Vice President of the Cooking Club. He wanted to make an Animal Appreciation Club to help care for all the cats, dogs, horses, and owls on campus, but the number of applicants to join got so out of hand that Rhea decided that it was just gonna be a proper volunteering position instead, called Volunteer Animal Caretakers.
Golden Deer
Claude: As ever, Claude is a busybody, a jack of all trades. He tends to be a regular “drop in” at certain clubs like the Mindfulness and Meditation group and even the Paranormal Investigation Team, but not a proper member, However, he’s a true member of the Writing & Literature Club, Debate Team. Archery Team, Philosophy Society, and even the creator of the International Culture Society. Nobody knows how he manages to balance it all, plus everything else.
Hilda: “Joining a club sounds like too much work”, she said, until she hears about the Crafts Club and immediately joins. It’s refreshing to have some other appreciators of handmade accessories to hang out with! Claude convinces her to join the Mindfulness and Meditation group too, since it’s the perfect place to chill out.
Lorenz: He wanted to make a Young Nobles Society, but was told no clubs were allows to purposely not allow commoner students. So instead be joins the Debate Team, Young Mages Society (even though his magic is pretty average compared to the rest of the group), and the Dancers Society (to Dorothea’s even greater displeasure). He also submits his poetry to the Writing & Literature Club...anonymously, just like Bernie.
Marianne: She would consider being clubless, but the moment she hears about the Volunteer Animal Caretakers she signs up right away. It would be her only club, but it would open her up a little more.
Ignatz: He would definitely join the Crafts Club, which is technically for any soft of craft or art, painting included. It would give him a space where his passion was accepted, which he desperately needed. He’d consider joining the Young Knight’s Union to save face with his family, but feels bad at the thought of not putting genuine effort into it.
Raphael: As mentioned before, he’s on the recreational Brawling Team! He and Caspar are both the stars of the team, but Raph is the one everyone can come to for a bear hug.
Leonie: Definitely part of the Archery Team. She’d be pretty competitive even with her teammates, which Shamir scolds her for straight away. Since she tends to have a narrow focus on only one or two goals, I doubt she’d join anything else.
Lysithea: She joins the Young Mages Society right away, and impresses everyone...as well as becomes the unofficial “mascot” of the group, which she hates but accepts after being bribed with sweets. Stays far away from the Paranormal Investigation Team.
Church of Seiros & Faculty:
Flayn: Once she’s officially a student of the Academy, she’s enthusiastic to join a club. She definitely signs up to be a Volunteer Animal Caretaker, and joins the Writing & Literature Club (which makes Seteth very happy). She considers joining the Dancer Society but takes one peek in on their practice, sees Ferdinand and Lorenz in the dancer outfits, and leaves.
Seteth: He’s the faculty adviser of the Writing & Literature Club, since he himself enjoys writing children’s stories. He also acts as the moderator for the Debate Team, and is part of the Faculty Fishing Group.
Byleth: Along with being a member of the Faculty Fishing Group, they would be the faculty adviser for the Volunteer Animal Caretakers, as well as the Mindfulness and Meditation group. Someone’s gotta give these kids therapy, might as well be the half-feral, weirdo mercenary
Jeralt: All Knights of Seiros are required to help out with the Young Knight’s Union, but since he’s more merc than knight anymore, he spends more time with the Faculty Fishing Group. Though he does pop in on the Paranormal Investigation Team from time to time. His kid’s basically a cryptid after all.
Rhea: While being the Archbishop would take up 99% of her time, Rhea is resolute on wanting to contribute to at least one of the Academy’s student clubs. And she chooses to be the faculty adviser for the Gardening Club. Staff and students alike are shocked, since Dedue is the leader of the group, but Rhea likes flowers and wants to encourage the small collection of students who have chosen to work in the Greenhouse.
Manuela: Of course she’s the director of the Theater and Choir! She’s also the instructor for the Dancer Society. Her former experience in the Opera make these three clubs near and dear to her heart, so she and Dorothea put their all into them.
Hanneman: The faculty adviser of the Young Mages Society and Paranormal Investigation Team, as well as the Philosophy Society. He wants to challenge the students to think critically.
Catherine: As a Knight of Seiros, she helps out with the Young Knight’s Union, and is popular with the students there. After Jeritza...leaves, she takes over for him as the coach for the Fencing/Dueling Team as well.
Jeritza: Coach for the Fencing/Dueling Team, he’s a great teacher but awkward when the students try to talk to him outside of practice.
Shamir: Coach for the Archery Team, and while she’s technically a mercenary she still has to help a little with the Young Knight’s Union. She also decided to be the faculty adviser for the International Culture Society, occasionally telling the students about life in Dagda.
Alois: He LOVES helping the Young Knight’s Union, since he used to be a member himself. He also coaches the Brawling Team and is an avid member of the Faculty Fishing Group...even if he never catches anything.
Cyril: He’s not a student, so he can’t technically be part of any clubs, but Rhea often has him come with her to the Gardening Club, and Shamir has him practice with the Archery Team...and try to reconnect with his Almyran heritage in the International Culture Society.
Gilbert: While he tries to keep a low profile (Seteth pls force this man to pay his overdue child support), he does help the Young Knight’s Union, and is a regular at the Faculty Fishing Group. He also acts as the faculty adviser for the Cooking and Crafts Clubs, since he enjoys cooking and woodcarving himself. Although there are some repeated issues of him not being too keen on working with Dedue.

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.
A guest post from Scott Huntington to The Prepper Journal.
Life is unpredictable — you never know what kind of curve ball it will throw at you. But if you can’t roll with the punches, you’ll have a hard time surviving. Sure, there are “proper” tools for hunting. But sometimes you just don’t have them with you. Sometimes you have to work with the things you have on you. Here are four alternative hunting weapons that may end up being life-savers later on. We’ll start small and then work our way up.
The Spear
We’ll start off at the times where you don’t have anything but what’s around you. The spear is an age-old weapon that is easy to craft, and deadly to use. While it can require a good deal of strength to use, and may not be the most accurate — spears are great to use for their relative stealth, ease of construction and utilizing the materials most likely at hand.
You’ll need to work on your stalking and still hunting skills if you want any success. Stick close to tress, brush, and whatever can block your silhouette. Try as much as possible to find an area that blends in with what you’re wearing. Search for animal trails and consider waiting in an overhanging tree.
The spear you use makes a difference as well. For a stronger spear, put the tip near a fire and slowly roll it so it’s slightly charred. Don’t keep it too long in the fire or it will break. You just want a golden-brown color, like cooking a marshmallow. This hardens the tip. Attaching a knife to the end with paracord is also an option assuming you have paracord, ow other string material AND you are willing to lose your knife.
The Slingshot
While likely not your first choice in hunting tool, the slingshot is a portable, easy-to-make weapon that could help you take down small game.
Slingshots are made of basic materials such as wood and leather and have been used for thousands of years. While they may not be the most accurate of weapons, there is something to be said about mastering the art of stalking prey because of this shortcoming. If you’re able to get close enough to prey to effectively hit and kill it, you could use pretty much any weapon you want.
A slingshot is a reliable weapon because it’s one of the more affordable and compact options, making it easy to acquire and take with you anywhere — just in case. Sometimes it can be the only thing you have, so you better learn to use it.
What’s the best part about using a slingshot when you’re in a pinch? Ammo is everywhere. Rocks and pebbles may not fly straight, but they are easy to come by. Slingshots are really only meant for smaller critters such as squirrels, rabbits and birds, so be sure you’ll be able to get a head shot to avoid internal bleeding and spoiling the meat. Practice on small targets at home to improve your shot.
The Crossbow
An upgraded spear and slingshot combo — the crossbow packs a lot more punch than a spear and has more accuracy than the slingshot — all without sacrificing the stealth. The portability is most of the problem with this weapon — however, if you’re lucky enough to have packed a crossbow and ammo, or bolts, you can hunt prey quietly and take down medium to large game.
One of the best crossbow perks is that you can reuse your ammo. A surplus of ammo is a perk of the slingshot, and may even be what makes survivalists use them, but reusable ammo that is accurate and reliable can help bring in more meat over time.
The AR-15
Let’s say it’s deer season, but your hunting rifle is out of commission. The AR-15 can be configured to shoot like a rifle with superb accuracy and enough punch to take down prey such as deer.
The AR-15 is almost like comfort food for military vets. It’s a weapon that’s understood, efficient and versatile, and it’s becoming much more common as a method for hunting deer. If you’re looking to take down deer quickly and without spoiling the meat, the AR-15 perfect for the occasion.
You can set it up with the ideal 6.8 Remington or 6.8 Remington SPC caliber, and it’s powerful enough to take down deer without having a recoil that leaves you rubbing your shoulder afterward. Even an AR chambered in the NATO standard 556 will do the job when you have to put meat over the campfire.
Endure and Survive
What you prep for and how you react to life’s little tests will make all the difference for survival. If you’ve trained yourself in firing non-traditional hunting weapons, you’re already ahead of the curve. If not, go out and try something different.
Take the time to learn how to craft weapons out of raw materials and see how they fire — that way, you’ll have an easier time persevering if you find yourself caught in the cross hairs.
Editors Note: Preaching again but do note that if you have to make the first three weapons you can NOT make them if you are not carrying a knife, your EDC staple.

CTN WRAPUP I've spent the last three days visiting with people at CTN-X. CTN is an amazing thing. It's kind of like the invasion of Normandy except with portfolio cases instead of guns! Platoons of people being dropped off to storm the beachhead of animation in an endless stream. It's a bit daunting and exhausting. My voice today is a croak from all the conversations! I'm going to start with a general note... I refer to young animators as "kids". That isn't meant as a pejorative thing. When I was in college people like Frank Thomas and Mike Lah and Grim Natwick would refer to me and my aspiring animation friends as "kids" too. They were honest and straightforward with me. They spent time sharing important information that I still use. I'm here today because of their generosity and kindness and the reason I do what I do is to "pay it forward" to the new crop of kids the same way they did for mine. If I call you a kid, it's a compliment. I'm telling you that you have what it takes and are worth investing into. That said, here are some of my reflections on CTN... When I would sit down to talk with a young artist, I would always start with a few questions to find out who they were and what their experience at CTN had been like. I learned some very interesting things. A lot of young artists were fresh out of college and were eager to show their work. They lined up to get their portfolios reviewed by studio recruiters, but when I would ask them what the reviewers had told them about their portfolios, they all said that they got very little time and feedback. The reviews were brisk, pretty general and the critique was not specific enough to be helpful. Most of the time the feedback was "Not yet. Keep working on it." That shouldn't be surprising. It's the job of a studio recruiter to identify artists who are qualified to fill their available positions. It's not their job to let applicants know how to become qualified. More and more schools are offering programs in animation. I met a lot of recent graduates who were looking for their first job in the business. I would always ask them if they were finding that their education had prepared them to find their first job in animation. Every single one of them answered the same- no. That also shouldn't be surprising. It's possible to give a student an overview of the general points of what it means to work in animation, but learning the specific skills is their responsibility. School isn't a place where you buy an education off the shelf. It's a forum for learning. The self study students do in school is even more important than their classwork. It takes self study to get the fundamental skills to land the first entry level job. It takes self study to advance those skills to get promoted to a better job. If you want to advance and grow as an artist, that self study is what gets you there and it never ends. Grim Natwick was setting aside two hours of each day to study when he was 95 years old. It's important to develop that drive and focus to learn on your own early in your schooling. If you wait until after you've graduated to figure that out, you've wasted four of the most valuable years of your life. I see kids with the "deer in the headlights" look on their faces all the time, and events like CTN just remind them of all the things they should have done but haven't made the effort to do yet. I met a lot of kids that "get it" and a lot of kids that don't. I sat down and talked to them and helped them as best as I could and gave them the time it took to get to the point where I asked, "Do you have any more questions?" and they said "No, I understand." My other AR Board Members Taber, JoJo, Pez, Paul and Mike were all there generously doing the same. After one of us had spent a half hour or more helping explain what is needed to work in animation and how to acquire those skills, every single aspiring animator said the same thing to us. They told us how much our honesty and clarity meant to them. No one else at CTN had given them the same kind of help that we had. That shouldn't be surprising either. Companies at CTN are there to serve their own purposes- to sell their product, advertise their services, recruit candidates for employment- no one is there specifically to help and support artists... except for Animation Resources. When I explained to people what Animation Resources was all about, I would see a look of puzzlement in their eyes. They would be trying to think of another group to compare us to. There's the Union that's focused on the business aspects of animation. There's ASIFA which has become a professional organization, but they don't really address the needs of aspiring artists or independent animators. There are schools, but they are focused on a tuition based curriculum. Women in Animation do good things, but they are focused on women who work in the business. Animation Resources is different. We're a non-profit group that is dedicated to serving artists. We are "artists for artists". Nothing more. Nothing less. You would think there would be a lot of that, but there really isn't. It's just us. I kept seeing that expression of puzzlement as I would explain that we were an educational group that supported self study- meaning no formal lessons, tests or grades. Our charter is to pile up golden reference- the best of the best- so people who want to study can study from the best. Animation students generally didn't know they even needed that, and many professionals I spoke to had never considered that they might need to focus on objective analysis and study if they want to sharpen their skills and advance. But as I talked to them, I would see the look of realization form in their eyes as they began to understand. Then they would get excited and grab a brochure with our website link so they could sign up as soon as they got home to their computer. We live in an era of social media. Everything is bite sized. I understand that. This article I'm writing now is too long for Facebook. Very few people will get to the end of it. But you can't get the ideas across that Animation Resources is trying to get across in 140 characters or a five minute portfolio review at CTN. I'm counting on the people who are serious enough to want to become animators to take the time to absorb the treasures all of us at Animation Resources are taking the time to digitize and share with you. Two professional animators came up to me at CTN and said that they follow us on Facebook and Instagram. They raved about how great the frame by frame breakdowns are- the ones Nicholas John Pozega posts for us every day. They said they are always amazed by the images we post. I asked them if they had ever clicked through to the website. They admitted that they hadn't. They are on their phone and not on a computer, and it's hard to read articles and view galleries of images on a phone. I told them that as professionals, they should have enough of an interest in their art form to figure out a way to bookmark important reference and follow up on it. The purpose of Animation Resources isn't to entertain. It's to inspire and facilitate learning. The lesson for students is the same as the lesson for professionals. The responsibility for learning, growing and advancing as an artist is up to you. We're willing to help you with that, but ultimately it's still up to you. Seeing the spark of understanding and enthusiasm in young artists' eyes is a great thing. I finished up my conversations with all of them the same way... I pointed out that Walt Disney pushed the art of animation forward light years between Steamboat Willie and Snow White. In that short period of ten years, he set the standard of quality and expressiveness that we all look up to. The way he did that was by instituting a program of self study under Don Graham that taught artists how to analyze and break down reference and apply it to their work. We look up to films like Fantasia and Pinocchio to this day. Some people talk about a "second golden age". But we shouldn't go backwards. We should build on the knowledge of the past and apply it to creating a future that is relevant to today and reflects who we are as a society. Reboots and aping style won't do that. Mining the past for technique and observing our world for personalities and things to talk about will create something better than the golden age. I would end our conversation by saying "Make cartoons that I want to watch." I also have to say that speaking to professionals was gratifying as well. I met a few folks I worked with twenty years ago and haven't seen since then. They told me how much they enjoyed working with me back then and that was very nice... but they also said that they have kept up with what I'm doing now with Animation Resources and thanked me for it. I had a gentleman come up to the booth and put his hand on my shoulder and say "Are you Stephen Worth?" I said yes, and he said, "I'm here to thank you and apologize." I was a bit taken aback because I didn't recognize him. He said, "I've been following the Animation Archive for many years. I've used your material and appreciated everything you do. I thank you for that. But I apologize because I've never sent you any money to help you support the project. When I get home, I'm going to correct that and send you a check." I told him, "Don't send a donation. Join as a member. That's the best way to show that we are helping you." "Done." he said. I asked if he was an artist. He said, yes I'm a director... and then he told me a couple of the films that he directed. I knew instantly who he was. He was one of the keynote speakers at CTN. I had never met him and didn't recognize him by sight, but I sure knew all about his great work. I was floored that he knew all about me and my passion project. Sometimes those of us at Animation Resources don't know if the messages in a bottle we're packing up and sending out through the WWW and social media are getting out there over the vast ocean of the internet. I thank Tina Price and all the people behind CTN for creating this great opportunity for the family of animation to get together and celebrate our art form. For me, CTN this year was like thanksgiving. Now I can make my turkey and have another one! -Stephen Worth

Harry Potter: 5 Best Dragons (& 5 Worst) | ScreenRant
The world of Harry Potter has dozens of fantastic creatures, but perhaps the most iconic is the dragon. Dragons have made several appearances in the series, from the time Hagrid tried to raise one, to the time Harry and his friends freed one.But not all dragons are considered equal. You likely already know that there are several breeds of dragons – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire did a solid job of showing us that. But you might not know about all of the dragons to be found. So here we've gone ahead and listed the best and worst of the dragons.

10 Best: Chinese Fireball
Tumblr media
The Chinese Fireball is one of the dragons that famously made its way into one of the books. During the Triwizard Tournament, Victor Krum faced off against an angry Chinese Fireball mother. Krum succeeded in getting the dragon, but he also made her crush her eggs by accident. As the name indicates, these guys are native to China and are beautiful shades of red and gold. Their flame attack is the true reason for their name; these dragons can shoot balls of fire from their nostrils – so don't get on their bad side!
9 Worst: Antipodean Opaleye
Tumblr media

The Antipodean Opaleye dragon originates from New Zealand but has been seen as far from their homeland as Australia. This makes it a little bit difficult to keep them out of the eyes of muggles, understandably. As does the fact that this dragon is without a doubt the most beautiful of the dragons known to this world. They have pearly scales and glittering eyes, both suit the name perfectly. These dragons are relatively harmless (unless threatened or very hungry), preferring to eat the stereotypical sheep over humans.
8 Best: Hungarian Horntail
Tumblr media
The Hungarian Horntail is native to Hungary and is quite possibly the most aggressive and dangerous dragon known to wizards. Naturally, that means that this is the dragon Harry was forced to face during the Triwizard Tournament. The Hungarian Horntail black scales, with bright yellow eyes that have vertical pupils – much like a cat's. Because of these traits, the Horntails have a slightly lizard-like appearance. But it would be your death to mistake them for something as benign as your everyday non-magical lizard. If you're anywhere within fifty feet of these dragons, you've within their fire range. So stay far back from these ones.

7 Worst: Common Welsh Green
Tumblr media
The Common Welsh Green is one of two dragons known to commonly appear in Great Britain. Given that keeping dragon sightings quiet isn't an impossible task, this should tell you a little bit about these guys. The Common Welsh Dragon, unsurprisingly, is native to Wales. They prefer to live higher up in the mountains, and for the whole are not known for attacking muggles or wizards (without provocation, that is). There's a couple of famous examples of their attacks, but otherwise, they're content to live and let live. The Common Welsh Dragons are a beautiful shade of green and are particularly well known for their song-like cry. Fleur faced one during the Triwizard Tournament, with only a little bit of difficulty.
6 Best: Norwegian Ridgeback
Tumblr media
The Norwegian Ridgeback has cemented its name during the time of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Here we saw Hagrid desperately try to raise a baby dragon as his own – the infamous Norbert. Obviously, things didn't go quite as planned.Native to Norway, the Norwegian Ridgeback can be mistaken for a Horntail, though they're not quite as lethal, and have more brown on their scales. It's still best to keep a distance from these guys, as they can shoot flame from a very young age. And their bite doesn't seem to do humans any good either – just ask Ron.
5 Worst: Swedish Short-Snout
Tumblr media
The Swedish Short-Snout is a stunning silver and blue dragon that tends to live in the mountains of Sweden. Their fire is even blue – though we'd advise against taking too much time to enjoy the view. Cedric Diggory famously had to face a Short-Snout during the first challenge in the Triwizard Tournament. The Swedish Short-Snout is a dragon species that have a complex relationship with wizards. They prefer to live in uninhabited regions, which is the main reason why they haven't killed more muggles and wizards. Unfortunately, their hides make for excellent protective gloves and thus are hunted by wizards.

4 Best: Peruvian Vipertooth
Tumblr media
The Peruvian Vipertooth is a dragon that has earned its name – they are without any doubt the most venomous dragon known to man. They originate from Peru, and appropriately have a copper color in their scales. The Vipertooth doesn't have the best history when it comes to interacting with wizards (and muggles). They tend to enjoy humans as a tasty snack, for one thing. That made their sudden and rapid population increase a significant danger – forcing a team to be designed to track and hunt the dragon, in order to bring their numbers down. They are also the origin of the lethal Dragon Pox.
3 Worst: Hebridean Black
Tumblr media

The Hebridean Black dragons are the second species known to live within Great Britain. This species prefers to live in Scotland, specifically in the Hebrides. An island chain. They have beautiful purple eyes, ridges down their back, and darker colored scales. The Hebridean Black prefer to eat deer, as it is their favorite meal (we assume). But they'll settle for a cow when they're hungry enough. They are a bit more aggressive than the Common Welsh Green, but keeping people (muggles) out of their territory seems to do the trick.
2 Best: Ukrainian Ironbelly
Tumblr media
The Ukrainian Ironbelly is the largest dragon species known to wizards and prefers to live within Ukraine. The Ironbelly's claim to fame was set in stone back in 1799 – when one dragon carried off an entire ship from the Black Sea. Admittedly, the ship was empty, but that's not the dragon's fault. The Ironbelly is grey in color – hence of the reasons for the name. It has long talons and exceptionally tough scales. The Ironblly can easily crush objects, buildings, and people when landing, and can do so offensively when needed. And of course, the Ironbelly can also breathe fire. The Ironbelly made an appearance later in the Harry Potter series, as one was forcibly guarding the Lestrange vault. Here the dragon had been dealt with years of abuse, and thus we were not shown a healthy example of the species.
1 Worst: Romanian Longhorn
Tumblr media

The Romanian Longhorn, unsurprisingly, is native to Romania. It prefers to live in the Carpathian Mountains and has a dark green coloring to match their homes. They also have two golden horns, used to graphically gore their prey, which they'll then cook (via their fire) before eating. The Longhorns have long been hunted by potion makers, as the horn is used in many potions. Thankfully for the Longhorns, they have one of the largest territories available, and wizards and witches work hard at keeping muggles away.
