JUST,,, PLEASE </3 I want Gigi lore. Her character is delightful, and there's so much potential for interesting backstory. They've set up all these little threads [her working her whole life to get where she is but still being unsatisfied, 'I could get used to being unremarkable', feeling ignored] now I just want them to elaborate on them.

I might be biased bc I love Gigi to death but COME ON, IT FEELS LIKE SHE'S GETTING SHELVED SO MUCH!! I'm so glad she got to do more this season, esp w/ Reagan, but I'm yearning for lore

I need spoilers for episodes 5 and 6. They've got to be out there. I can't take two more weeks of this.

I think what's giving me this vaguely ill feeling, right now, is the sinking realization that there was no grander plan behind Loki's getting drunk, breaking the Timepad, just general kinda incompetent behavior. There were theories and there were hints and subtext and it amounted to nothing.

Cut for spoilers/negativity, sorry.

Basically I'm getting major "that opening scene in IW was just too full of holes, the-sun-will-shine-on-us-again, one little dagger, Loki has to have something up his sleeve - oh .... no, no he's really dead, there was no greater plan" flashbacks.

It's so incredibly frustrating for Loki's narrative to come so close to something profound, again and again, only to swing and miss at the last second. The pieces are there. The threads are there. And tptb keep choosing to just ... sit on them, bc idk, it's easier for Loki's complexity to remain unexplored?

Tom says that episodes 4 and 5 are where the series takes off and I'm just like, you can't wait until the second to last episodes to have something happen! You've been dropping breadcrumbs since episode 1 - episodes 4 and 5 are where you start to sweep them up! You've only got 6 total!

Also, I was really interpreting Loki having confused friendship with romance, bc that's what makes the most sense for his character but then there was this, and the aforementioned 'oh so this really is just surface-level material and I shouldn't even waste my time examining the subtext and context clues' feeling occurs. (Note - this article isn't overly flattering to Loki, bc of course it isn't, so just be aware of that before reading.)

So, yeah, it's just - it's not exactly the content of this episode that has me so upset. I can live with bad plots and dangling threads. Lord knows I tolerate other, arguably much more terrible tv shows for the sake of the parts I like (Reign, Once Upon a Time, a few seasons of Pretty Little Liars, just to name a few).

It's not the content. It's the refusal of tptb to take Loki's character to the depths he deserves, especially since they promised us that this series would really explore his identity and his gender and all of these things that the fandom mostly has wanted. It's frustration in the overall way the surface-level plot makes Loki's characterization suffer. And it's definitely the trigger of those feelings of heartbreak and fury and denial and grief that followed IW. I practically have ptsd from that death scene.

(I realize that these are hefty words to use to describe one's reaction to fiction, especially in the sense that an emotional downward spiral is being legitimately triggered by a tv show, but - look, everyone already knew I was cringe, okay, so leave me alone with my feelings.)

I think that if the show had more episodes, there would have been hope for it? Like all the breadcrumbs that have been dropped implied lots of fascinating things to be explored, but they just didn't have room to explore them as thoroughly as they'd need to in order for all of it to have an impact. Loki/Sylvie does not feel earned. Mobius turned on the TVA super quickly (so did B-15, for that matter). Ravonna went from kinda sus to outright villain in, like, ten minutes. And Loki and Mobius's friendship didn't exactly come out of nowhere, bc it was set up as the outcome from the first episode (in my opinion) but it did happen much too quickly. It wasn't earned, either. And the reason I'm harping on this is because these are all really good character journeys that could have been done so much better - yeah, even Loki/Sylvie - if they had just paced them better, used more of their own subtext, and had a few more episodes in which to develop the characters alongside the complicated plot.

(Yeah, there may be a season 2, but I'm not here for waiting a whole nother year or so for it to be filmed, produced, and released only for it to continue to ultimately not meet my expectations.)

So, yes. I'm sorry for the negativity; I realize I went from "hey I mostly liked this! It wasn't that bad!" to "I will ragequit and kill everyone in this story and then myself" in, like, a few hours but - well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'll most likely rewatch it again tonight. I may or may not cry it out and then do my best to enjoy the remaining two episodes for what they are, not for what they could or might be. Once the rawness of all of this fades, I'll focus on the things I liked and come up with my own headcanons, I suppose. Or maybe I'll overall change my mind again. Idk. Whatever. I just need a glass of wine and a few more xanax tbh. (Great. Now fiction is going to give me a drug problem as well lmfao.)

Also - it is actualy really, really funny that, if you think about it, it turns out that a fanfic by Tom isn't actually all that good. (I'm being facetious, but the general sentiment is true.) I'm sorry, Tom. I know you're excited about this and you said this episode was your favorite, so I hope you don't see some of these reactions (either here, or on twitter, or reddit, or wherever he may end up) and feel bad about yourself/your project. I guess there's just no universal cup of tea for everybody.

so I have some Thoughts and I fully accept it may just be that I’m so deep in my FF8 brain after Eden I’m seeing things, however,

those towers have got to be antennae or transmitters of some kind. They look like they’re pulsing regularly in a pattern, like they’re sending a signal. Thinking about the infamous Lunar Transmitter at Bozja Citadel and wondering what it was actually DOING. It was clearly receiving data (hence the entire point of the project as well as people getting tempered) but was it sending anything out? I hope we can have Cid take a look at one of these towers.

Speaking of which, I wanna chat with whatever architectural genius decided the towers were of Garlean origin, too. they just declare that at the outset and never mention it again. Can you please cite your source. We have next to zero examples of Garlean architecture that isn’t just Imperial shit so I find it pretty hard to believe at this point, especially when they look a lot more like something out of the Void Ark or the inner reaches of Mhach.

and this dude....this “Lunar” Bahamut, as opposed to OG Bahamut who despite being associated with “the lesser moon” Dalamud was never described in celestial terms that I can recall... what the fucketh is this thing. They’re calling it a dragon but I’m lowkey expecting Estinien to show up and be like “I know dragons and that’s no dragon” bc it looks much more like a voidsent or something to me honestly. Sure it’s overall shape bears a resemblance to Bahamboo, in fact it’s almost certainly using the exact same basic model, but the details are fucking WEIRD. Did you see it’s head? Did it even have a face, or a real mouth? What the hell did that fire blast come out of anyway? Dragons are from another world to begin with, so we already have THAT, and with the Void Sons teaming up in an attempt to not only reach but somehow maybe recover the 13th, I’m increasingly suspicious this is a literal void dragon which would, quite frankly, be pretty fucking awesome.

but back to my FF8 brain, all of these little scraps of paper pinned to the same conspiracy board are kinda giving me Lunatic Pandora feelings. Fandango never said anything about HOW he planned to recreate the Final Days (which is, honestly, a very vague concept to begin with. All WE know is Emet’s vision of it, after all) ....so I’m wondering if the upcoming smash hit “End of Days: Here We Go Again!” is going to be Lunar Cry-inspired somehow. Communicate with other worlds? summon monsters and overall havoc?

(Though it has rather hilariously minimal actual in-game consequences when it actually happens in FF8, the Lunar Cry is basically regarded as a “Calamity”... a calamity of red moon monsters, but a calamity all the same.)

I have zero legitimate theories but I have begun to fashion a tinfoil crown based on the above because why the hell not, right

1: What is your character’s biggest fear?

Hmm this is a tough one I think… a lot of their worst fears have come true, but I think the main one right now is betrayal. There are very few people in their life they trust and rely on or hold close, so the thought of losing the people they cling to is a lot. Their relationship with much of the world is disingenuous so the few people they can be honest with they have full trust for, and that trust is fragile and terrifying.

2: What is your character’s favorite memory?

This is an easy one! The sunflower isn’t just vague symbolism, it’s the direct connection to what is arguable Blake’s only good memory in life, the sunflower field a short distance from their house where they stayed all afternoon to escape the chaos of their household. They spent time there immersing themselves in the nearby forest, the natural beauty and writing in their journal. It was peaceful, quiet, and maybe bittersweet, but it was solace, and that was all they could ask for. Even now, those memories are fondly held close to them in the journal they’ve now retrieved.

5: Describe your character’s dream date.

Oh gosh… this is so difficult dhdkfj. I haven’t thought much abt Blake’s romantic life bc no romantic options are currently viable really, they wouldn’t date anyone who they aren’t already honest with and that list is two people long. They also have all that gender stuff to work through and that’s a big factor in it as well. When it boils down to it I think what they want in a romantic partner is similar to their wants in life, nothing grandiose, just… peace, calm, consistency and safety. A place where they can be themselves and feel home, feel like they belong there. A person who feels like home to them, I guess.

10: Would your character ever kill someone?

Yes! And they often daydream about it dhdjfjf. Blake hides their very-murderous intent behind the veneer of “I want to reopen the case to catch whoever ruined my life by framing me and killed my mother” but the subtext there is “I will absolutely take justice into my own hands” and they’ve potentially got the means to do it in Fractals. This is of course merely their emotional desire at the moment and as time goes on and events unfold, it’s possible that those feelings can change, or that they may not ever need to take matters into their own hands if things work out properly. Blindly killing someone isn’t really their style anyway, it would kind of ruin their integrity- it’s all about justice for them.

19: What is your character’s deepest, darkest secret?

Well I’d say no spoilers, but most of it is known in the existing backstory shdjdbdb. They keep a lot of things locked up but none of it is earth-shattering on its own. The abuse at home, the rampant abuse by police, the cultivating of a public image and stringing along their fans while hiding their true self, all of that. They tend to keep a pretty tight wrap on their past out of a lack of trust, but there’s nothing in that that isn’t already somewhat known I guess. Honestly their BIGGEST secret is probably the gender stuff, bc that’s all stuff they keep to themselves, sans a hint or two in the campaign.

28: What pet would your xharacter like to have?

A cat. For one, because I’m Jane, but also because they’d probably find a dog or other such animal too difficult. They already visit the cat café so often because they enjoy the company of cats who will just kinda chill with you and keep you company and hang out, and they’d probably like to have one around a potential house if they ever have their own.

30: Would your character have any hobbies?

Yeah. Obviously the biggest one is that they’re an avid reader, especially of detective novels. They’ve almost always got one with them. They’re also fond of games like chess, shogi, go, as well as a variety of card games. They also like to take care of flowers.

37: Do people have justified grudges against your character?

Haha yeah. Half the party has been directly insulted by them at this point in a passive way, in particular Lena, who they basically called a disaster while she was having a breakdown over the stress of probably dying in Fractals. Sakio isn’t really one to hold grudges but they definitely weren’t a fan of Blake taking advantage of Amil’s emotional state to get some information out of them. Small things like that, people who spend enough time around Blake probably get insulted once or twice and it’s entirely fair to dislike them for it. There are, of course, also unjustified grudges, like the police detective who hates Blake’s guts for complicating the open-and-shut murder case they were supposed to be framed for.

40: What would be your character’s favorite school subject?

English / Language Arts, of course, they’re the pompous know-it-all who’s gonna spend 40 minutes of classtime waxing poetic about the anticapitalist themes of the picture of dorian gray and they’re gonna enjoy every second of it. They’ll recite some bullshit quotes in the middle of battle just to prove they’ve read literary classics. Absolute fucking loser nerd.

48: How would your character type?

They’re actually pretty slow, on account of growing up poor without much access to internet or computers and subsequently spending much of their life in prison. They caught on quick once they were able to use computers and phones for schoolwork, but they’re not a whiz by any means, u can probably type faster than them.

60: If you could title your character’s life, what would it be?

I’m gonna stick with the name I gave their playlist which I’m very proud of, which is “Pretty Boys Don’t Have Scars”.

Offal Hunt Remaster Liveblog/Review Kinda Thing 1/???

Hey what’s up I finally did the thing. Friendly reminder that if you’re not reading Offal Hunt by @lionsenpai and @rontra then you’re missing out & you need to do so immediately. But if you have not read OH previously and intend to do so then you should not read this thing bc this contains spoilers.

Under the cut bc this got long.

So yeah I put liveblog/review kinda thing in the title bc this isn’t really a liveblog? Like if this was a liveblog it would just be me copy pasting all the lines in the entire chapter here and some unintelligent screaming. But like I wanted to have at least some coherent things to say so I had to take some time with this to think and gather my thoughts. Anyway let’s get started.

And still, there was no sign of the witch.

Cinder, a witch??? Oh Glynda honey you’ve got a storm coming.

Not to mention, having Ironwood in the room was bound to worsen the situation.

Ironwood, ruining Glynda’s day with just his presence. Cinder Fall may have attacked the CCT tower but at least she was hot af.

From over the top of a monitor, Glynda had seen but the briefest flash of gold beneath her dark bangs, like a serpent nestled in the undergrowth

I am 100% always here for Cinder described as a snake.

“She was… Savage.” Insufficient. Glynda tried again. “Lethal. More so than anyone else I’ve ever fought.”

Merely alluding to the clash filled her with an uneasy prickling. When she blinked, she could see the woman still, wreathed in a corona of hellfire. Cinder was no Huntress, not like Glynda. In her, Glynda sensed only the capacity for annihilation.

Lethal & extremly dangerous? Not a huntress? Only the capacity for annihilation? So… kinda like… a grimm… would you say…???

Ozpin tried to look unaffected, even as one of his hands instinctively lifted to touch the brooch on his scarf. A nervous tick, and for good reason. Nothing and no one had been able to keep up with Glynda before this. Confusion crossed Ozpin’s face and then vague fear. Even Ironwood had been moved to silence by Glynda’s words.

I just really love how everyone acknowledges that Glynda is so fucking powerful like “nothing and no one had been able to keep up with her” SHE SO STRONK

Little remained of the place where Glynda and Cinder Fall had drawn first blood, and all of it was charred and broken.

Damn I just love this line I’m not good with metaphors and symbolism and that shit but like. This shit right here? This is something. Ahsdhiasudh I really wish I could properly tell u what this line means to me but I just can’t do words rn

“I understand that your forces have tangled with her before, but this cannot be personal, James. You won’t avenge any death by sending more of your people to the slaughter.”

The praise should have banished all doubts. It didn’t. A torrid mix of dread and uncertainty filled her to brim.

Alright yall offal hunt is canceled Glynda doesn’t want to leave her home and she’s an anxious mess so let’s not make her do that alright

Couldn’t—until she could. Like the ebb of a tide from some bottomless sea, calm overtook her, bit by bit, piece by piece, until there was nothing left of that fear.

ah yes there she is, void Glynda, making things weird and creepy since chapter one this time.

It hadn’t been intended as a challenge, but his words still latched onto her pride like bristling burrs, digging in deep to draw blood. Of course she could catch her.

Glynda was a Huntress. She could hunt.

Glynda already making things weird by making up some kinda of rivarly with Cinder.

“When does my mission begin?” she asked, a hollow note in her tone.

Just the mention of her sent a thrill down her spine, something vacuous and ravenous settling deep in the pit of her stomach. A smoldering on the edge of hunger, the heat of it making her suit glow softly. Glynda Goodwitch had exceeded all expectations; not simply meeting her in battle, but pushing her back, the tower around them warping with the force of their collision.

There were few who could make her sweat, even fewer who could make retreat appear attractive. Glynda Goodwitch had done both.

Cinder: *gets her ass kicked*

Cinder: holy shit that was hot

She’d felt the capacity for it in their first meeting, when Glynda Goodwitch had called down a storm of ice upon them. She was power and magic welded into human shape, and Cinder had suspected, had considered—but now she knew.

O shit Glynda. Busted.

“If I didn’t know better I’d say you actually liked the brats—”

“Beacon won’t be safe for very long,” she cut him off, all flashfire irritation. He wrinkled his nose, withdrawing.

Roman: *implies Cinder Fall likes someone*

Cinder, immediately: how fucking dare u

Cinder saw her reflection in the glass, a serpent’s smile curling her lips.

Still 100% here for Cinder=snake

Aaaaand that’s a wrap, but there’s more to come bc I am very late to the party and I’m very excited. Hopefully it won’t take me two months to get the next one done and I’ll be able to get caught up before offal hunt resumes from the break.
