Interlude 3 - Drew
Tumblr media
Drew finally makes his debut! But who is he and what’s his role in the current situation? How much does he knows about everyone? check it in this new chapter!
Make sure to check the Story Archive for past chapters!
TW: abusive relationship (around the last bit of the chapter)
My parents named me Drew, but I have been called by many other names in the past, derogatory terms in general. I have only been called “friend” by only one person; the only one that I like to call me by it.
People don’t like me, that’s a truth I learned to live with.
I have been called by many names in the past due to my lack of interest in social interaction, right now the other employees call me “Cold-hearted Emperor” behind my back, but I don’t care, they are not there to be my friends, they exist near me because of mutual interest: they need money to live, a job, and my friend and boss needs the people with the knowledge to develop the experiments and inventions he needs.
Other “warm” relationships are not needed, I don’t need it.
I don’t need feelings, they are complicated. Life is simpler without them.
I don’t need more friends, as long as I have my only friend and my Pokémon I will be fine.
I will be fine.
I am a Dragapult hybrid, so I guess it was only natural for me to forge a bond with a couple of young Dreepy. They are called Sucre and Sodium, I named them like that based on their favorite flavors, no matter how much I tried I can’t let Sucre eat salty food, and the same is for Sodium.
Lunch is never something that I look forward in particular, I ate alone and then go out of the office to get something for my Dreepys, no matter where I could be I know exactly where to find something for them, things would be easier if I could find something for both in the same place but that’s almost never a reality. That day I wasn’t in the office, I had a meeting early that morning with some businessmen at Wyndon city, usually I take care of meetings while my friend focus in the development of the different experiments but in rare occasions two important meetings can happen at the same time and day so we split the work and I end up doing a short travel like today. Everything went smoothly as always.
Once the meetings were over, after having my own lunch at the hotel restaurant I went to my daily mission to find a treat for my Pokémon. Normally I would made the decision for them but since I was given the rest of the day free since the next appointment showed up earlier than expected at the office, I let Sucre and Sodium out of their poke balls and check by themselves what they wanted to eat. Sodium was the first, he flew to a fast food restaurant as usual and after a short while he was happily enjoying his fries with melted cheese, I never understood the appeal of cheese but if he wants it, I don’t mind. Sucre was always harder to please, once something was on his head he wouldn’t be quiet until he got it, and sadly for him it was one of those bad luck days. We passed through a café and after seeing the picture of the cinnamon buns outside he knew what he wanted to eat, but when I asked inside the owner said that they were sold out by the day, in fact all of the donuts were gone, apparently someone went a few minutes ago and bought everything.
I tried to calm down Sucre while we walked by the riverside, unless we took a flying taxi to another city it was very hard to find more cinnamon buns, after all we checked all the other cafes in the city already, but as we walked he noticed something and flew out of my shoulder in direction to a person sitting in a bench.
I knew who that person was; it was my job to do so.
His name is Crescente, he came all the way from his home in Kalos to Galar with his boyfriends and friends, but the group got divided soon after they arrived. I had read Trevor’s note about his change in appearance but it was still shocking to see him so slim in comparison to previews sizes I was aware of, he was closer to how he looked the time he spent shrunken than any of his other sizes, he was even shorter than I expected, being almost my own height, but no one could deny the larger size of his hips, that was a surprise.
Sucre flew to him because he was about to eat a cinnamon bun, looking at his surroundings it was very clear that it was him who bought all of the donuts, half of the boxes by his side were empty already but he doesn’t look satisfied or happy, just concerned as he rubbed his flat stomatch. He was taken by surprise by my dreepy, who stole the cinnamon bun from his hand, I immediately ran to apologize, not that I really cared but it was what I was supposed to say by social norms, I explained the situation and he laugh. We introduced ourselves and I sat down by his side, I was a bit tired of walking after all.
“I see, don’t worry don’t worry, he can have it, I have plenty” – He said, as he opened another box and picked up another cinnamon bun – “I don’t blame him for wanting one so bad, this is all so delicious I can’t stop eating! I wish my own baking were this good.”
“I see” – I replied, looking at the boxes around him. As a normal person would ask about the situation, so I did – “I’m sorry if I’m being too intrusive, but is there a reason why you are eating so many donuts?”
“Oh, donuts it’s only today’s dessert, you see, recently I lost more weight than I wanted and I don’t like it, so since I came to Galar why not try all the local cuisine? All my friends are busy anyway, and mom wanted me to travel and experience new things after all.”
“I see, so you are not from here, where did you come from?” –I couldn’t risk looking suspicious. My job was to be friendly, to look like a normal person who casually found an odd situation, no matter how annoying was listening to and answer I already knew.
“I’m from Kalos! I own a café but damn, my sweets can’t compare to this!” – He said, showing a jelly-filled donut – “But it’s weird… I have eaten a lot of food since yesterday but I just can’t get myself to feel filled or getting fatter… well, besides my hips and butt ahahah…”
It was due to the potion he drank, Trevor has sent samples of every potion Sven has done, we haven’t been able to replicate any of them but we are aware of all the effects these have. If I wasn’t in my position I could just let him know that all that fat he had is gone, it’s not coming back, and eating all these sweets will only make him look like a dracozolt. If he wanted to get as fat as he used to be he would need to eat a lot but of different tastes: sweets for lower body, salty for belly and spicy for his chest, everything else would go to the arms, or at least those were the results we got from our test subjects, I don’t know if it would have 100% the same effects on a person who came from another world, but by his current look it was kind of the same. It would be very easy for me to tell  him to check all kinds of restaurants across Galar…
But I couldn’t say it, but not really because of my position.
I just didn’t care.
“How odd” – I said, continuing with my farce – “I hope your situation gets better soon.”
“Thanks, but I guess I’m glad it’s happening because this way I can eat all that I want! I wonder where I should go tomorrow…”
“If you allow me to give you a suggestion, check Ballonlea town, they have a very nice coffee at the Pokémon center and I’m sure the town will remind you of home-” –Fuck, he didn’t mentioned what city he came from in Kalos, but I quickly came up with a cover-up – “Isn’t there a town with a lot of giant mushrooms around there too?”
“Oh, I have heard about that place! I’m really looking forward to visit it, but I’d like to go with my boyfriends…”
“Is something wrong?” – I asked politely, and glad he didn’t seem to suspect anything.
“It’s nothing, they are just very busy at the moment. Petrov with the guild and Koh making those repairs and new uniforms… I wish his father wasn’t in such a bad state when we found him; there was a lot of work he left without taking care… Sorry, please ignore what I just said.”
“Don’t worry, I don’t mind” – I said, as Sucre finished eating and flew back to my side – “I guess snack time is over for him”
“Yeah, I’m happy he found me and got to enjoy the sweets he wanted”
I received a message from my boss asking to go back to the office, and in the right time, I was already exhausted of all this forced social interaction. I explained Crescente the situation and I called a flying taxi, it didn’t take much to arrive.
“Again, sorry for the trouble my pokemon caused you” –I said as I got in the taxi.
“Don’t worry, you can pay me back next time~” – He said, happily as the Corvinight got ready to fly – “And maybe next time I will get to meet the real Drew, not this façade you are showing me…”
I couldn’t reply because the taxi was already going upwards, but I can say that it has been a long time since I felt so much terror. How long was he aware of my farce? Was my act so bad? No no, I know how to fake interest very well, after all if that wasn’t the case our company business wouldn’t go as well as it does, I take care of a good percentage of the deals. My dreepys noticed my anxiety and patted my head to calm me down. It was ok, he saw trough my lies but he still didn’t know who I am or whom I work for, and I doubt we will meet again.
 When I arrived to my workplace it was almost sunset and went straight to my boss office. He was there, half naked and in the floor as usual, after that day when the two became one he always gets really horny at this day of the week and hour, I haven’t been able to investigate the real reason since his dual personality and true nature is a secret from everyone except me, but in his words “we are like day and night, so it’s only natural to be a mess when both collide, right?”
I will never know which Noah said those words.
I closed the door behind me and got closer to him, he was all sweaty and playing with his long silver hair.
“Don’t worry, everyone should be going home right now, I gave them the rest of the day free” – He said, barely turning around to see me.
“A good and charming boss as always” – I said, as I picked up the report he wrote and left on his desk – “I see, so the chespin not only turned into a hybrid, but it also evolved to Chesnaught in the process…”
“Yes…!” – He moaned – “And his memory is completely wiped out too, I made sure of that… he… he only looked at me for a moment and- and thought I was his master… that miserable thing, he never had a trainer to begin with… haha… some animals think the first thing they see is their mother but that weirdo thought I was his master…”
Only caught to be used and discarded, no one will know the truth, and even if he was found, there will probably be someone willing to take care of him, after all it has happened already with the scorbunny of a couple of years ago.
“This time it was sooo much better and perfect” – he said – “His body barely got a few scratches, 2% I’d say? Such an improvement from last time, right?”
“That’s good to know, but I guess he wasn’t good enough to be dynamaxed, right?”
“Yeah, I abandoned him because of that, I don’t need failures” – He said as he got up, as the light of the sun was no longer to be seen, his hair turning dark as the night too – “Don’t worry about it, little Drew, we can count in Horacio for that research, after all his new partner should already be with him.”
“I don’t like that guy, he is dangerous, what happens if your plan fails because we let him-” – I said, immediately regretting letting my feelings be seen, as Noah put his big hand on my mouth
“You don’t need to worry about that, little Drew. Trevor finally caught up to Sven and he and his new friends have no clue, everything will go as I planned, I don’t need doubts.” –He said, grabbing me by the neck, my feet couldn’t feel the floor as he walked through the office and opened the secret door to the hidden room. I was thrown to the bed as usual as he started to strip down.
I didn’t care what Noah was in front of me, I wanted to be useful to him.
It was like this for a long time, after That Day, I take care of him
No matter what, I will do what he wanted, in the office, in the bed.
I will take care of him.
No matter how much he has moaned calling me by Horacio’s name
My heart and body belongs to him
After all, without Noah…
…I have nothing.

Romantic Idiots
How to confess to your crush(es)?
Option 1 : Do not let your brain and heart clashes together and give you mixed signals. Then confess.
Option 2 : Give him/her/them an Applin or any shiny Pokemons. Then confess.
Advice : Panic if fail.
“Panic if fail? What’s that supposed to mean, Grandpa?” Hop glanced up hesitantly as he finished noting down the old man’s advice. His ex-champion brother nervously clenched around his Charmander plushies.
The grandfather smiled coyly as he went to the kitchen to pour himself a cup of tea while the brothers tried to follow behind him. Their mother chuckled at this silly scene before the grandmother answered for her husband, also smiling coyly.
“Panic as in running away like an idiot. I swear to Arceus, when I was at your age, Leon, your grandpa over there tried to asked me out by throwing a Poke Ball at my window. Poor Appletun dearie got a fright that time and refused to acknowledge him for a decade.”
“Hush, sweetheart.” the blushing old man ruffled his wife’s hair before settling down. “Our daughter-in-law got it worse than you. Am I right, Helen?”
The said woman just sighed blissfully before snorting out loud, almost making the brothers laughed if they weren’t asking for some love advices. Standing up, she shuffled through the living room to picked up her wedding photos and was reminiscing the moment.
“Mom?” the older brother asked gently as to not interrupt the moment.
“Yes, Leon?”
“How did Dad confess? It can’t be worse than Gramps’ attempt.”
“Yeah!” the younger brother butted in while grinning at the offended-looking man, “What was it like? Could it be he try to serenade? Bet he sounds goofy and passed it down to Lee!”
“Hey! I sound amazing, Hopscotch! You are just jealous!”
“Boys,” the mother smiled at her sons’ playful banter. When they finally stopped, she smiled even wilder as she recounted the fateful evening.
“Well, he didn’t serenade, for starters. But he did tried to make an A Capella with Rotoms and Dittos. Never worked out since he first practised it at the Lake of Outrage. The Rotoms snitched on him with the Dittos were making ‘He love You’ letters while I saved his arse.”
“Oof, ouchies.” Hop scrunched up his face jokingly while Leon laughed as he imagined the scenario over and over. They pulled out their own RotomPhones when they were done though.
“You better not snitch on me, dude. I must do this myself.” The ex-champion pleaded with his little bro nodding beside him.
“You got it-Roto! Don’t stutter when you confess-Roto!”
“We make sure to taped you guys so we can see who’s got the worst end of the stick-Roto!”
“ROTOMS, NO!”
The purple-haired brothers panicked as they chased their cackling phones, leaving the amused adults behind.
“I bet two thousand PokeDollars that they would failed terribly and cutely at the same time.”
“No need to bet, Mother. It’s obvious that their ability to confess is still strong in their blood.”
“Rude, ladies. Very rude.”
~~~~~~~~~~
Now back at their shared apartment at Wyndon City, Leon was pacing around. His little bro had already went out to find his crushes. The new chairman wished he had this kind of courage. He wished, just not gonna happen. He and Raihan are just friends with a healthy rivalry of ten years! How is he going to react if he just confess out of the blue?! That’s why he got a perfect plan! Sonia had helped him devised a lot of plans. Plans related to shiny Pokemons were quickly rejected due to him being a natural shiny repellent. Flowers were also a big no, Raihan’s Pokemons tend to gobbled up flowers from his fans. Chocolate was supposed to be part of the plan, but Sonia rejected that idea because it was overrated. So this is the result. Just ask Raihan to go out with him and make sure he knows it’s a date and not a Valentine’s Day hangout. Solid A+ Plan! “Over a phone call? So outdated, Master Lee. Not gonna lie but that’s so last season,” the RotomPhone floats around in front of Leon while showcasing the contact details of his master’s dream man. “I don’t want Raihan to see my face if I ask him face to face! It’s too obvious!” “Ain’t that the plan?” “No!” “Okay, okay! Geez, you humans are so overly complicated. What happen to mating calls? It’s so much easier.” “Shut it, Rotom...” With a heavy sigh, he slouched over the single-seat coach. Maybe it’s a bad plan, but it’s the only foul-proof plan he could ever execute. “Okay,” Leon sat up and slapped both side of his cheeks to concentrate, “I’m ready! All I have to say is ‘Go out with me this evening’!” Snatching RotomPhone from the air, while apologizing, the purple-haired man pressed ‘Call’ with confidence. It rang for a few times before the Dragon Gym Leader picked up with his smooth, husky voice. The voice he should still get used to but still melt every time he heard it. “What’s up, ex-champ? Feeling lonely on Valentines?” Let’s be boyfriends. Leon’s mind went on short circuit for a bit. He didn’t respond for a minute, making the silence unbearable. “Uh, Leon? Are you there?” “LET’S DO BOYFRIENDS’ DATE!” Unfortunately, his mind ended up fusing what he initially going to said and his current thoughts. Freaking out, he ended up the call without hearing the reply. He just screwed up. He managed to screw up the only foul-proof plan. This is not what it should happen and yet, here he was. Leon stomped his way to his bedroom, slammed his door open and threw himself onto the bed in frustration. He really shouldn’t take Option 1. ~~~~~~~~~~ Arriving at the Hammerlocke Gym, Hop quickly strode towards the lift, and quickly slid his access card. He went in but not without getting bumped by Raihan, who never seems to noticed him as the top Gym Leader dashed outside with the biggest grin plastered on his face. Leon succeed, huh... The lab assistant shook his face to focus on his mission. He really put a lot of effort finding these Pokemon after all. Gramps’ advice always worked! Reaching his destination, he walked out slowly towards his so-called Rival Gang. They were grooming and playing with Zacian and Zamazenta. The Legendary Pokemon was really ease up on Victor and Gloria real quick. Hop let out his own Legendary Pokemon partner, Eternatus, scaring the occupant in the room, especially the albino-haired boy. “Hop! You idiot! Are you trying to scare me half to death?!” I wanna smooch you til I melt though. Grinning characteristically, he settled himself down between the girls, who now switched their focus on Eternatus. Victor, the new chairman’s secretary, smiled gently at him as greeting. Arceus, I would love to see your smile everyday, every time. “So, how’s the research coming up, Hop? Having such a rowdy Pokemon like this dragon must have damage the lab a few times.” Marnie smirked at Hop while throwing a Heavy Ball for it to catch. Such a graceful badass. With a super effective smirk. “Natus can shapeshift to a smaller size to roam freely so it’s not a problem,” the lab assistant answered before side-glancing his Legendary partner, “the problem would be giving Sonia a hard time to examine it.” “Typical. Seems like giving you Eternatus is the right choice. After all, I don’t think I can handle two huge responsibilities at the same time. Am I right, Zacian?” Gloria, the newly-crowned champion, winked at the Sword-wielding Warrior Pokemon. Zacian huffed out a pleased grunt, almost indicating it agreed with her. Are you trying to faint me with your adorable wink?! Finding the right time, Hop waited for the opportunity as they talked and played around. Occasionally battling or betting matches, making curry at this unusual location, talking about work. Hop had to thank Arceus when Victor popped the question. “So... today’s Valentines Day, ain’t it? You guys got some confession to make?” Silence taking over the room. Marnie and Bede tried to hide their blush but failed miserably while Gloria was looking embarrassed for once. Hop took a deep breath. “I do.” Shocking his gang again, he took out four Love Balls. Each of them had their unique designs that Hop took the time to do. “It makes me sound crazy but I think... I have a crushes on you guys. Super, duper big ones,” he slowly exclaimed as he handed them each of their own unique Love Balls, which they took it gladly. A good sign. Victor had Sobble with heart-shaped eyes drawing; Gloria had Scorbunny with its ear forming a heart-shaped drawing; Bede had a heart-shaped Solosis drawing; Marnie had Morpeko with heart-shaped cheek pouches drawing. “Hop, I hate you,” the Fairy Type Gym Leader started scowling. While Hop thought he was already damaging their friendship, the blushing albino head also threw him and the others a Love Ball. “You make me look so underprepared that it hurts.” “Me too.” The Dark Type Gym Leader joined in as she too had four Love Balls. “Me three.” The secretary chimed in, also with another four Love Balls. “I’m an idiot,” Gloria was flushed red as she took out four boxes of chocolates. The gang bursted out laughing at their rightfully-called lover. Lovers... that rings nicely to my heart. Our heart.
Fade In
This was inspired in-part by a scene in the music video for Fade In/ Fade Out by Nothing More. I have an OC for SwSh, and if I ever actually write a full story with her, I’ll likely end up using this scenario for it. But, since I don’t know if that will ever happen, I’m leaving her name out of this for now. I mean, it is kinda weird not mentioning a name in this, but I figured it would be easier for people to project their own OC’s onto this if they want to if I didn’t.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Piers and his girlfriend had been together three years now. They had met during the end stages of that year’s Gym Challenge when her booth outside of Wyndon Stadium had caught his eye. There were always a lot of booths set up out there every year because the event drew people in droves from all over Galar and even some from other regions, and Piers would use some of what little free time he had to browse through each one because he enjoyed supporting people trying to do their own thing. She was selling some of her paintings at her booth, and Piers was seriously impressed with her work. They ranged from realistic to surreal and expressionist, but they were all dark in nature and done with immense skill and detail. They certainly weren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but they drew Piers in immediately. The two of them ended up spending a lot of time talking about the various pieces she had on display; her inspirations for them, the message they were trying to convey, what techniques she used, and so on. He ended up getting so wrapped up in their conversation that a member of the League Staff actually had to come find him so he wouldn’t be late for his match.
He ended up winning his first match, but it was pretty obvious his head wasn’t in the game. His reaction speed was slower than usual and he was making mistakes he normally wouldn’t. His second match was less forgiving and he ended up losing, but he didn’t really mind that much. While he wanted to show off how good his pokemon could be without dynamaxing, he didn’t want anything to do with that whole Champion business. If he had managed to make it all the way to the finals, he would have just ended up throwing the match in the off chance he got too close to winning for his comfort.
Now that he was free from the event and could do as he pleased since he didn’t care enough about anyone still participating to stick around this year, he decided he would go back to her booth and talk to her again. He usually wasn’t very talkative to people he didn’t know, but something about her made him feel so at ease that he had no problem at all talking to her as if he’d been friends with her since forever. Maybe it was because she was a fellow artist? He didn’t know, but it intrigued him greatly.
He ended up buying one of her larger pieces, a black and white painting that looked like a skull when viewing it from afar but was actually a forest scene when viewed up close, and talking to her until it was time to close up for the day. This time around, they ended up talking about themselves more than the artwork, and he realized that he really liked this girl. She was nice, funny, creative, interesting, and her looks were nothing to sneeze at either. He helped her pack up her paintings and lock them away in the space provided by the League for vendors, and once that was done, he asked her to accompany him to dinner. She was surprised, but happily accepted. They’d been together ever since.
After being together for a few months, Piers could tell that this relationship might actually be going somewhere, so he decided to introduce his girlfriend to his little sister, Marnie. The two girls got on like a house on fire, much to his relief, and his girlfriend became a great confidant for the younger girl when she didn’t feel comfortable going to him with something. After about a year, he asked her to move in with him and Marnie, and they became one happy family. When Marnie left for her Gym Challenge, she helped console him and kept his worries at bay as much as possible. When he handed the Gym over to his sister and he started to go on tour for his music career, she would switch off between staying back to support Marnie and traveling with him to support him and sell paintings at his concerts.
Piers hadn’t really thought much about having kids of his own before he had met his girlfriend, and even now they were being careful so she didn’t  end up pregnant. But, the more time went on, the more he thought about it. He decided he wouldn’t be opposed to it, but he probably wouldn’t go out of his way to make it happen. They’d talked about plans for the future from time to time, but they both had more of a “whatever happens, happens” attitude and they left it at that. They were happy as they were, just the three of them; why mess with a good thing?
Well, a few months ago, it happened. It came as a surprise to her because she had gotten her period that month, though it was much lighter than normal and the cramps were mild at worst, which was a bit odd. But, when that was coupled with an abnormal moodiness, unusual fatigue and the tell-tale vomiting, they both began to suspect what was going on. They weren’t entirely sure how it happened, and they were certainly nervous about the situation, but they weren’t displeased about it. As her idol once said “We don’t make mistakes - we have happy accidents.”
Today, she was going in for an ultrasound. Piers usually went with her to her doctor’s appointments, but he was busy packing for a tour in Alola, so she insisted he just let her go by herself this time. This wasn’t meant to determine the sex of the baby or anything anyway; that wasn’t due to happen until just before he left for his tour. This was something she scheduled because she had a major case of the “going good blues” and just needed this to put her mind at ease.
Of course, nothing about this pregnancy went as expected, and this was no different. She wasn’t supposed to find out the sex of their unborn child this time around, but here she was with this information now. The damn kid just HAD to be in the perfect position for the technician to tell with a great amount of certainty on the ONE occasion that Piers wasn’t with her. She was happy to know that the baby was totally fine, and knowing the sex of the baby early means that they can prepare even better, but she is kinda miffed that it happened when Piers wasn’t around. At least now she gets to think of a cute way to tell him though, and she’s got a great idea already.
Piers had gotten a text from her telling him that he had been right about her worries being unfounded and that she would be home in a few minutes. Sometime after, he had gotten another text asking him to meet her at her rented studio space about a block away from their apartment because she needed his opinion on something, which he found odd. She was so adamant that he stay home and get ready for his tour rather than go with her to her appointment, but now she was wanting him to stop and head over to her studio? Why not just send a picture if she wanted his opinion on a painting? What was she doing there anyway? He’d made it pretty clear that he wanted her to keep the painting to a minimum for the time being since he was worried that the paint fumes could cause complications if she were around them for long periods of time; he even got her a really nice sketchbook and professional-grade colored pencils so she could just draw any ideas she’s hit with in the interim. He’d have to talk to her about this.
“Babe, I thought we talked about this.” Piers said with a sigh as he entered his girlfriend’s studio.
“I know, I know.” She said walking over to him and taking off one of his gloves, which had him confused. “But this was important. Close your eyes for me.”
Piers raised an eyebrow at the odd instruction but did as she asked.
“Good. Now, don’t open them until I tell you to. Promise?” She asked.
“Yeah, sure. I promise.” He said with a chuckle. “You’re so weird sometimes.”
“Well, you picked me, so you have to deal with it.” She said, taking his ungloved hand and flipping it so that his palm was facing upward.
He smiled at her remark. “Wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Then, he felt something cold and wet on his hand as well as the tickling sensation of what seemed to be a paintbrush. He almost opened his eyes in surprise, but she scolded him and reminded him of his promise, so he fought the urge. Once his palm was covered in paint, she re-positioned it so that it was facing forward and pulled it down slightly as she pressed it against something.
“Okay, you can open your eyes now.” She said softly.
Piers slowly opened his eyes and looked down to where his hand had been placed and saw that she had placed it on her stomach. He furrowed his brow in confusion and slowly lifted his hand to reveal a light blue hand print. He stared at it for a few seconds, seemingly having trouble processing what this all meant, but when it clicked, his eyes snapped up to meet hers. She smiled and nodded, answering his silent question. He broke out into a huge grin and picked her up in a spinning hug, not caring, or really even noticing, that in doing that he had gotten paint from her belly all over his shirt and paint from his had all over her hair.
that’s a long way down, little alice.
As the night rambled on, I felt the familiar and slow warming of my skin. Shots no longer made me cringe, my thoughts no longer weighed me down. A smile on my face, I glided effortlessly between circles, adding a sparkling life to each one, hugging the people I knew with warm affection, and instantly adoring the new people I met.
The tall water tower that had always been present on the outskirts of the field became irresistible to Wyndon. He had to climb it, he said…and make his mark. This sounded like an amazing idea to me.
He began trolling the groups for spray paint, and, due to the endless amount of working rednecks, found some pretty quickly. He found me, and held it up. “I know you’re in, little Alice.”
Of course I was. I grabbed his hand and we ran to the water tower, everyone watching us, cheering us on. Smith shook his head and gave a half hearted, “don’t fall, please”, knowing full well that he would be unable to stop me.
We climbed clumsily up the stairs, me first, Wyndon behind. When we reached the top, I threw my hands up in the air, glancing down at the party below, relishing in the rush.
Wyndon shook the paint, scrawling his initials. I laughed at his attempts. “That is crooked as hell.” He lit a cigarette and handed the paint to me. “You do better, then.”  I accepted the challenge, carefully writing “Alice” in neat cursive, much larger than the initials of Wyndon. “You’ve outdone me!” He laughed, and I admired my name. “It will be here forever.” I sighed. Wyndon shrugged, having completed the task, and began climbing down. I stood above everyone for a while, just for the sake of being there, until I felt my buzz declining and needed another drink. I climbed down, and glanced back up at my name, my mind drifting to Maddox, wondering what he would say if he saw it.
It was Catherine, as usual, that broke my contemplation. She grabbed my arm, speaking quickly as if what she was about to say was the most important statement anyone would ever make.
“Come with me! Jake gave me Hypnotique!!” I followed her, sitting on the ground, our backs leaned against one another, sipping the blue liquid. “i’m so drunk.” I reported, to which Catherine laughed. “I know, you keep abandoning me. Everyone is going to know you wrote that shit on the tower. Alice the dare devil."
Good, I thought secretly. I want everyone to know that I was once here. I let out a sigh, prompted by alcohol induced euphoria. "Cat…I may be in love.”
She glanced over her shoulder, throwing me a look. “Love?”
I nodded my head, and took in a breath to explain to my best friend the experience of Maddox, when an unmistakably raspy voice, unaffected by changes in pitch and tone, lifted through the air. “Nice graffiti, Alice.”
I grinned, glancing up and exclaiming drunkenly. “Piper!” I felt Catherine tense and stand, sharply stating, “I thought I saw a dark cloud approaching. The air suddenly reeked of teen spirit.” Piper tilted her head and glared at Catherine. “Nice nails, Catherine. Whorish, fits you perfectly.” I stood between them, as I always found myself. “You guys have to stop doing that.” Catherine shrugged. “I was just leaving, enjoy your punk rock company. Wash your hands. I’m going to find Jake.”
She left, and I knew there was no way to stop her. “She’s drunk.” I muttered in explanation of my best friend’s actions. Piper laughed, throwing her arms around me, causing me to tip a bit. “So are you, it seems.” She ran her hands over my hair, smoothing it down. “I haven’t seen you in ages.”
I had recognized that girls usually shared characteristics. There were plenty of types of girls, girly ones, sultry ones, athletic ones…but most of them wanted the same things. Piper was different. She was the most interesting and intimidating girl I knew. Madeline had been the first to bring her into our world. She had posted several artistic photos of herself all over her website. These pictures actually made Madeline appear deep and complicated, and everyone adored them. Piper, Madeline explained, was the master behind the lens.
A part of the underground indie rock crowd, Piper dressed differently than anyone I had ever seen. She wore plain white t shirts and cargo pants, sported purple streaks in her pixie cut, and it made her look as if her whole existence was an unplanned, unintended, mecca of coolness. When I was around her, I felt like because her approval wasn’t freely given, it mattered. It wasn’t long before I became the subject of her photography, posing in scandalous ways I would usually shy away from.  I never felt bored with Piper, though I always wondered if she was bored with me.
I scrunched my nose and grinned as she smoothed my hair. “I’m a mess, I know.” She smiled and shook her head, “messy works for you, Alice.” She linked her arm in mine, and with snake-like movement, walked me over to the nearest tailgate, handing me my drink. She kept this strange smile on her face, causing my natural confidence to falter. “What?” She shook her head. “So, I hear you’ve met Maddox.” My eyes widened at the mention of his name by someone else, suddenly feeling my cheeks warm and flush. I replied as nonchalantly as possible. “Mhm. You know him?” Piper raised her brow slightly, her voice flat and unaffected. “Of course I know him. Great artist.” She pauses, sipping her drink, then looking me dead in the eye. “You know he has a girlfriend, right? Britney.”
Crash.
My face fell, and I couldn’t hide it. Piper tilted her head. “Oh…you didn’t? He didn’t tell you? Well, you didn’t like him or anything…did you? You aren’t exactly…well matched”
A feeling encompassed my being, one that I had never experienced. My veins ached from the adrenaline that rushed through them, my heart racing, my face incredibly hot. Piper, intrigued, I suppose, by a person near, stealthily walked away, leaving me alone and overwhelmed. What was wrong with me? What was this emotion?
It was rage.
Maddox had betrayed me. He entered my world and completely altered it. Left me wanting something that was already taken by someone else. I took deep breaths, staring at the ground, conflicted.
This anger was irrational. He couldn’t betray me, he had made no promises. But, weren’t those looks promises? No. Those looks may have been misinterpreted. Maybe it was all me. Maddox never explained his relationship status because he didn’t need to. But..that look..
I struggled to find logic, but was left wanting, nothing certain, nothing concrete, and feeling as if the ground beneath me was shifting.
There was one unmistakable truth that engulfed me. The thought of his name escaping another’s lips broke my heart.
