*big fucking eye roll*
So, I am playing Stoneshard which is in early access and a kind of Fantastic Art But We Wanna Be Demon Souls kind of game. Meaning, it's pretty, but hard as fuck.
Fine. I signed up for that. I do like to play rogue-like games sometimes. I mean, Hades is the best rogue-like I ever played in all my years (*cough* I'm not old I'm seasoned. *cough*) of gaming. But, with this game, in the classical sense of rogue-likes, I expect all the brutal deaths and stress to get back to town while you're on your last leg.
Their balancing issues can be attributed to being in early access (I know people have a beef with early access, but I'm okay with supporting new devs...unless they get greedy and charge fucking $60 for an early access game...I'm looking at you Baldur's Gate 3.)
But, I have a big beef that is common among a lot of fantasy-type RPG writing:
CAN WE GET RID OF THE CHAUVANISTIC "WOMEN AREN'T NORMALLY ALLOWED TO BE A KNIGHT/MAGE/FUNCTIONAL HUMAN BUT THIS ONE IS DIFFERENT" BULLSHIT?
That shit has been done and overdone for decades. Gamerbros (TM) can come after me, and I couldn't actually give a shit, but enough with this bullshit. You are writing a European-based, fantasy medieval game. First of all, you need to study your fucking history because a lot of medieval things writers like to throw around were NOT acceptable. Like marrying teenage girls. Yeeeeeeah, some royalty did that, but it wasn't exactly acceptable to the normal populace. Royalty are inbred dicks and shouldn't be trusted with your view of normal medieval life.
I digress.
Look, women, especially women of color, put up with this shit Every Day. And, before you start in with "Well, actually..." Women still get "women can't be gamers," "women can't be president," "women can't be programmers"... Like, women still get treated like shit in all sorts of jobs and hobbies just for being female. SO CAN WE STOP PUTTING IT IN OUR FUCKING FANTASY?
Whenever I see this "normally women can't be BLAH but she is different" in games or writing, I immediately assume that not only is the person writing it male, but someone who has some sort of beef with having to include women in whatever they're doing.
Yes, I get that it can be a writing thing, like "this world has a beef against women not being in housemaker roles, and I wanna show them breaking the mold," I get that, but honestly, guys, seriously, there are better ways to write it, and frankly, again, IT'S BEEN DONE TO DEATH. Women, ESPECIALLY women of color and trans-women, already see it all the fucking time, and we really just want a break from it, ya feel me?
So, you know, break your own mold.
I still like this game very much, but...that...yeah...enough of that shit, thankyouverymuch.
