It was finally Christmas and I would be happy normally, but since Archie and I broke up I and I was so heartbroken about it. I really wanted him back but I couldn’t bring myself to tell him that. I couldn’t, not when I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t tell him I loved him. I thought I did but honestly, I wasn’t sure anymore…
Betty came over and Veronica and I were wrapping gifts for our friends. This was the only time I actually enjoyed being rich. I loved giving to other people, unlike my family who only gave when it benefited them.
“Kevin’s Secret Santa had a strict 20 dollar limit guys.” Betty said as she saw all the gifts.
“Kevin needs to relax.” Veronica said.
“Also, these aren’t just for Secret Santa.” I said smiling.
“I got a Hermes scarf for my mom, a leather passport case for my dad, now that he can travel again, something for my sister, obvi, and a little something for my best girl.” She said showing a box to Betty.
“Yeah, I got stuff for my family and you guys as well.” I said with a smile and Betty shook her head but she was smiling.
“And a bauble for Archie…” I said with a sigh.
“Because you’re getting back together?” Betty asked hopeful.
“Because it was purchased pre-breakup. And haven’t you heard? We’re still friends.” I said with a smile.
“You know ex-boyfriends and friends never work out Y/N/N.” My sister said and I rolled my eyes.
“I’m not just gonna cut him out of my life.” I said and Betty nodded.
“And you shouldn’t.” Betty said and I smiled at her.
“Come on, we have to get to school.” She said and we nodded. We all grabbed our things and left for school. Once we got there Kevin gathered everyone up and started the Secret Santa.
“Y/N it’s your turn.” Kevin said sitting next to me. I grabbed my gift which was an envelope and I looked at it.
“Hmmm.” I hummed.
“Oh. A gift certificate for a couples’ massage.” I said and looked at Archie.
“Thanks, Josie.” I said with a smile.
“You can go with Betty, or your sister, or your mom…” Josie said.
“Or I can go with your mom, if you want.” Reggie said and I rolled my eyes.
“Dear God, can we please get this torture over with?” Cheryl said in her usual Cheryl way.
“Betty, you’re next and mercifully last.” Kevin said and she smiled.
“Well, I think I know who picked my name based on these wrapping skills.” She said and looked at Archie with a smile. A part of me looked at them jealous but I quickly covered it up, of course my sister noticed though.
“Archie…” Betty said with a smile.
“My dad and I were cleaning out the garage and I found it.” Archie said and Betty giggled.
“Swiss Family Robinson?” Veronica asked.
“Yeah, it’s this old read-a-long record we used to listen to when we were, like, five.” She explained and Archie smiled at her.
“Oh my god, I love it Arch, thank you.” she smiled. I didn’t really have time to be jealous because Moose and Midge walked in with smiles on their faces.
“Hey, Merry Christmas.” Moose said. Reggie got up and hugged him as did Kevin. Everyone else smiled and said ‘Hi’. Josie got up to hug Midge. The secret santa was over and everyone sat around talking. Archie and Betty ran off somewhere and Jughead went to school I guess. My sister pulled me away from everyone and gave me a look.
“I told you being friends with an ex-boyfriend doesn’t work out.” She said crossing her arms and I rolled my eyes.
“Oh hush! Betty and Archie are best friends, there’s nothing there.” I said and she shook her head.
“Whatever you say little sister.” She said and then the bell rang. We all went to class and I was slightly dreading it since I had class with Archie. When class ended I decided that I needed to talk with Archie.
“Archie…” I said stopping him.
“I got you a little something.” I said handing him the black box with a red bow.
“Thanks. I didn’t realize-”
“Oh, no, no. It’s all good. Just opened it.” I said cutting him off with a smile. He opened the box and there was a watch I knew he’d love.
“Y/N/N, this is-”
“Turn it over.” I said cutting him off again. He turned it over and read the inscription ‘Mad about my Archiekins XO. Y/F/I’
“I got it before… I don’t want thing to be forced between us.” I said and he sighed.
“What?” I asked and he shook his head.
“No. Did I… Did I make it worse?” I asked worried.
“I just, I wanted you to know that I still care about-”
“No, you didn’t.” He said cutting me off and I looked up at him.
Things at home aren’t great right now. It’s my dad.” He said and I nodded.
“Anything I can do to help?” I asked and he shrugged.
“Come on. We’re still friends.” I said.
“He just, he got his hospital bill and he owes 86,000 dollars, Y/N/N, and it’s like we’re selling Christmas trees, just for extra money so we can keep our heads above water.” He said.
“Oh my God, Archie. I want to help. I want to hug you.” I said grabbing his hand but he pulled away.
“It’s okay. I shouldn’t have said anything. The watch is great, Y/N/N. Thank you.” He said and walked off.
“Yeah…” I said with a bit of a sigh.
School finished and Veronica and I went home. I was stuck in my room doing my homework and thinking about Archie and his dad. How the hell could this happen? And I’m sure our break up didn’t help much either… Ugh! Why the hell must everything be so difficult!? Finally it was time for dinner and we were all sitting together, like a family.
“Hiram. Was that a Spiffany’s bag I saw coming through the lobby earlier today? Looked about the right size for a Glamerge egg.” My mother said.
“That depends, mi amore. Have you been naughty or nice this year?” My father asked back and my mother giggled. Ew.
“Don’t worry, mi hija. Santa has your list too. And please, don’t go snooping for the gifts this year. He hates that.” My father said to me.
“Santa can rip up my list for all I care. I mean, look at us, throwing money away on bejeweled eggs like we’re a family of Russian oligarchs when there are people in this town who can’t even pay their own medical bills.” I said.
“Y/N, we go through this every Christmas. We know you don’t like spending money like you’re rich unless it’s for other people, but mi hija, we’re not communist.” My mother said smiling at my father.
“Well we should be! Archie told me that he and his dad are drowning in Fred’s medical bills. To the tune of $86,000. Which is why I was thinking-”
“Absolutely not.” My father said cutting me off.
“Sweetheart, that’s a lot of money.” My mother said and Veronica looked at me shocked.
“The Lodge Charitable Trust has made its donations for the fiscal year. Fred Andrews will have to tighten his belt.” My father said and I narrowed my eyes at him.
“Said Ebenezer Scrooge! Fred’s selling Christmas trees for extra cash, dad. I mean, that’s the kind of man, the kind of father he is.” I said and my father stood up.
“You know, I believe I’ve some work to finish in my study.” He said and left. My mother shook her head at me and I sighed.
“Well, I think dinner is finished.” She said and got up. I sighed and got up to go to my room and Veronica followed me.
“Are you insane?” My sister asked as I sat on my bed.
“Are you? Fred and Archie and in an ocean of debt and mom and dad don’t want to do anything!” I said looking at her like she was crazy.
“Because you and Archie aren’t together anymore. They’re not just gonna give money out.” She said and I scoffed.
“Get out.” I said and she looked at me.
“Y/N come on-”
“Get out!” I shouted cutting her off. She sighed and left.
The next day when everyone was out, I snuck into my dad’s study and sat at his desk. I started looking through his draws and found the egg my mother wanted.
“Merry Christmas, mom.” I said and then saw a folder that was under it.
“Pop’s?” I said confused. I opened it and saw that my father had bought Pop’s… I grabbed the folder and left his study. I grabbed my mom’s credit card and went to my room. I grabbed my phone to make a call.
“Yes, hello.” I said when someone answered.
“I’m calling to settle and account for one of your patients, Fred Andrews.” I said.
“Of course. I’m his business partner.” I said.
“Uh-huh. I’d like to pay the bill in full and keep it anonymous, and angel donation.” I said and they asked me if I knew how much it was.
“Yes, I’m aware of the amount. My name?” I asked.
“Hermione Apollonia Lodge. And it’s a Black American Excess card. Number 29572300…” I gave them the information they needed and the job was done. Fred Andrews wouldn’t need to worry about the money anymore. I moved into the living room to work on homework and gifts for my friends, when my parents and sister walked in.
“Hey guys. Finishing up some last minute shopping?” I asked.
“We were, but hen we got the most fascinating call from our bank, confirming a charge that was made to my credit card in the amount of $86,000.” My mother said and I looked up at them.
“Oh, so that went through. Great. Yeah, I decided that you would cover Fred’s medical expenses. I mean, if you can afford to buy Pop’s, and then lie to my face about it. So, how is it that we can suddenly afford an entire diner?” I asked and my parents and sister sighed.
“You wanted a more active role in Lodge Industries and we let you have it. Then you break into my office and try to use whatever you find as leverage? Now I admit, there’s a lot you don’t know and that’s on purpose.” My father said.
“Veronica get to know everything and I’m lift in the dark? How can I be part of this family if you keep hiding things from me?” I shouted at him.
“Mija, you think you want to know everything but you don’t.” He shouted back.
“My name is on all of those documents in your desk, daddy, doesn’t that mean I have the right to know?” I asked.
“Yes. Yes, it does, Y/N. But that means the time for being daddy’s little girl is over. It’s time to work now, all of us, in lockstep.” My mother said and I crossed my arms.
“I think you’re confusing me with Veronica. I was never daddy’s little girl, daddy just trained me to use people like he wanted.” I said narrowing my eyes.
“Yes, I trained you because you’re like me. You have a gift for manipulating people and I wanted you to learn how to use it.” He said and I scoffed.
“I never wanted that!” I shouted.
“Alright, training, playtime, everything is over! She deserves to know the truth, Hiram.” My mother said.
“Alright.  Alright. Follow me to the study.” He said and I followed my family. My parents sat me down and spent an hour or so telling me everything.
“Well, Y/N, now you know. You know everything.” My mother said.
“So, mija, what do you think?” My father asked handing me a glass of rum.
“I’m in. But I have ground rules. Well, one ground rule.” I said.
“By all means.” My father said.
“I refuse to do anything illegal.” I said.
“Well, that’s fine, especially since we’re not doing anything illegal either.” My mother said walking over to my father.
“Let me share two words to live by. Plausible deniability.” My mother added.
“Also, that charge I made for Fred’s medical bills? I want that to stick.” I said.
“Mija, it’s gonna complicate matters, Fred’s a proud man. He’s not-”
“We’ll smooth that over though.” My mother said cutting him off.
“And truth is, we’ll need Fred for what comes next.” She added.
“Find. Assuming the Fred situation can me finessed, do we have a deal?” He asked.
“We do, daddy. We have a deal.” I said.
“Can I talk to you alone though?” I asked and he looked at my mother and sister.
“Of course.” He said and told my mother and sister to leave the room.
“What do you want to talk about?” He asked.
“I don’t want to manipulate people anymore…” I said and he looked at me.
“Mija, your skills will come in handy.” He said and I sighed.
“Daddy, I just want to have a normal life. I don’t want to keep being used by you!” I said and he got up placing his hand on my shoulder.
“I’m not using you mija, I-”
“Yes you are!” I said cutting him off.
“Relax Y/N, you’re skills will come in handy but we will talk about it before you are needed.” My father said and I sighed, that was the best I was gonna get…
“Fine…” I said with a sigh and then my phone rang.
“Hello?” I answered.
“Y/N/N, can you meet Betty and I at Pop’s? Bring Veronica.” Archie said and I furrowed my brow.
“Yeah, of course! We’ll be right there.” I said and then hung up.
“Um, that was Archie. He wants Veronica and I to meet him at Pop’s.” I told my father and he nodded.
“Go on.” He said and I nodded. I got up and told Veronica. The two of us got there and Jughead, Betty, and Archie were already in a booth. Veronica and I sat next to Jughead and they already got us milkshakes. They told us about what happened that night and we all stared at them in shock.
“Your instinct about Svenson was right, Y/N/N. You thought he was the Black Hood. We could have ended it right there at school where we confronted him. I didn’t see it. I didn’t, I didn’t see it in his eyes.” Archie said.
“Forget his eyes. I can’t believe he cut off his own finger.” I said shocked.
“The finger of accusation.” Betty said.
“So we know whodunit. Why did he do it?” Jughead asked.
“Mmr. Svenson accused an innocent man of murdering his family and got the man killed. So maybe, in some backwards way, he thought that targeting sinners would balance the scales somehow. I don’t know.” Betty said with a shrug.
“No, no, it makes sense. I mean, Svenson was always around, lurking in the hallways.” Veronica said.
“He could have seen me and Ms. Grundy in the music room.” Archie said and I nodded looking down.
“Yeah, he could have seen Moose and Midge buying Jingle Jangle.” Betty said.
“Guys, this is starting to feel like that weird last scene in Psycho. The truth is…” Jughead paused and we all looked at him.
“I have nothing actually. Except that he’s in a body bag and we aren’t. I think that’s enough for tonight.” He said and we all nodded. We all went home later that night since tomorrow was Christmas.
Veronica and I woke up early to open gifts. I was under the tree getting a gift when I noticed a small one with my name one it. I picked it up and looked at it confused.
“Who’s this one from?” I asked my parents.
“Archie. He dropped it off yesterday.” My mother said and I walked to sit in one of the chair to open it. I opened it and it was a locket with our faces inside. I smiled and looked at my parents.
“Can I go thank him in person?” I asked and they smiled and nodded. I got dressed and grabbed a mistletoe then went to Archie’s house. I set up the mistletoe in front of his door and then texted him to come outside. He opened the door and I smiled at him.
“Hey.” He said walking outside.
“Merry Christmas.” He said with a smile.
“Look up.” I said and he did.
“Mistletoe alert. Hung by moi. Now we have no choice but to kiss.” I said stepping closer to him and wrapping my arms around his neck. I leaned up to kiss him and he kissed me back.
“Archie…” I said when we pulled apart.
“You are so good. It’s like you’re filled with it, and I know that I need goodness in my life. I need you in my life. In other words… I love you too, Archie Andrews.” I said and he kissed me. It was a Christmas miracle that I could finally allow myself to tell him how I really felt.

到啦!
yaaas finally made it to the hostel and set up uni internet account on both phone and laptop 👊achievement unlocked👊
So lots has happened in the past few days :O first moved into 中关新园 and caught up with a friend + her family in Beijing :D They helped me buy tons of stuff at local stores and organise registration at the uni etc.  (literally could not have done it alone omg like the bureaucracy involved with the process on its own is already a huge struggle but that alongside trying to sort everything out in a foreign language is just next to impossible). so massive thanks to them for being so patient and helping out 🙏 🙏~
top tip: if u have to buy a clothes rack, make sure you have someone with you at the time so you don’t end up lugging it across campus, nearly leaving it behind in a corner store, and hauling it over a walkway bridge up to the 9th floor of ur hostel all alone :)  Pros tho, your arms will get super ripped (unsteady shaking wrists for the next hour may or may not be a minor side effect tho...)
I’m in a double room on the 9th floor of the hostel, so the view is pretty decent. On the other hand tho no idea where my roommate is???? the 服务员 said she went back home to Korea for new year but that she should b back for the start of their classes on Monday .... but like she isn’t here yet?? what’s even weirder tho is that stuff on her side of the room has been moved since i got here 0_0 my friends back in NZ and i have this inside joke that she’s probably a ghost or invisible, which given the situation seemed like a pretty plausible explanation at the time ahaha 😂 but then another friend said that the room mate might’ve arrived back already, grabbed some stuff from our room, and then gone away again to stay at a friend’s place for a few days or something instead, which does make slightly more sense than the invisible theory i s’pose lol. From the books and notes on her side of the room it looks like she’s korean but proficient in English and chinese. So yay that’s a plus! at least communication shouldn’t be too difficult when we finally do meet ahahah.
Yesterday morning all the pre-uni students had a test to see which chinese classes we should be placed into 😱 NOTE: bring a 2B pencil to the placement test or face getting growled at by the supervisor. Mechanical pencils not okay either for some reason... 😒
NGL Personally i thought the test was pretty hard. the actual comprehension of the listening part wasn’t too bad, it was just really confusing because they had heaps of answers that were almost the same save for a few details, or multiple answers that COULD have been correct and it was just a matter of really getting the specific details to figure out which one fit best, which was something completely different to anything i’d ever done in NCEA before so yea saying it was a bit of a challenge would be an understatement lol. To put it in perspective i straight up guessed all the answer for the last few questions in the reading section and wrote an essay with every second character in pinyin for the writing part lmao 😓😬 somehow though despite all that still managed to make it into class 3! But don’t actually know how the classes are ranked in terms of numbering so could still be in the cabbage class after all lmao. Class lists came out in the afternoon on that same day, so it must have been a very quick marking process. Luckily a couple of friends i made are in the same class!!! :D One of those friends is the same age as me, arrived on the same day and likes the same song by this one chinese artist! plus a few other things the same as well~ it was just really nice to find someone with so many things in common this early on, especially after three days of practical isolation in the hostel lol.
Got a chinese sim and data plan, set up a chinese bank account, had the medical exam, and bought text books for class. Still needa set up online + mobile banking though, purchase insurance and get a permanent residence permit. I was actually living off of 4g data on its own since friday because there was no way to connect to the internet without going to the computer department (which was shut over the weekend, of course... ). Also had to sort out a ton of stuff with my passport at the new sun centre and computer centre. Because during the actual application procedure months ago i used my old passport, so some stuff like my internet password and admission notice were using the old passport number while other things in the uni system were already using my new passport number. It got a bit messy to say the least... that’s just one thing to be aware of. You can get unlimited internet for 10 yuan a month which is very, very reasonable! originally it used to be 100yuan a month but apparently so many students complained about how expensive it was that they lowered the price. You need to pay for internet by going to this machine in the 计算中心, inserting your campus card and putting in the last six digits of your passport number (hence where many complications arise.. luckily there was another international student there at the time who helped me out and had the same old/new passport problem when she first came last semester. and as it turns out my new friend has that exact same problem too😂)
ALSO make sure to put money on your campus card if you want to eat at the school canteens. They don’t take cash. But most stores on campus only take cash, not your campus card, so really you just need to have both handy. You can put money on your card at the 中关新园接待中心 or machines on campus (but i haven’t quite figured out how or where to do that yet lol). if there’s no money on your campus card tho it’s not that big of a deal caus you can always just buy dinner from a convenience store on campus or go to the restaurants at 中关新园 and pay using your hostel card (but that seems to be more expensive than campus canteens so probs wouldn’t recommend it...although i haven’t actually eaten there before sooo). A normal amount to put on campus cards is around 100yuan. Any more than that and you’ll probably get laughed at by the receptionist. Plus it just makes sense not to put too much on at any one time in case it gets stolen or lost. Photos to come!!
sorry for the long post lmao too much to catch up on.

EDC as of the start of 2017
https://imgur.com/gallery/DJi3p
This is my first everyday carry post. I’ve cross-posted between the EDC subreddit and my Tumblr.
Photo #1: My current EDC when I'm going without my bag. Absolute essentials for when I need to hit downtown, run errands, or meet with a client for coffee and conversation.
Row-by-row:
Power bank: I actually took this from my girlfriend in Malaysia. She ended up taking mine, as sort of a trade until I return to her. I don't actually know its power rating, but I do plan to replace it with a 30,000 mAh with QC 3.0.
USB A-to-micro cable: For all my charging needs.
Google Nexus 6: My workhorse for when I don't have my laptop with me. I actually do a lot more work on this sucker than people think. If it looks like I'm intently texting, I'm actually composing emails or document drafts. I won’t be upgrading this phone until it dies or breaks, though I might pick up a backup phone to keep at home since this device is starting to glitch out.
RFID wallet: A cheap Air Canada labeled hard case I bought from Walmart. The plastic sleeves are a bit broken on the inside, but they still hold my cards well. Inside, I carry my primary bank card, credit card, Air Miles card, Petro-Canada card, and other random cards used for points and rewards that haven't been digitized yet.
SIM cards: Yes, you see a SingTel pay-as-you-go SIM, but I actually kept the packaging to hold on to my other SIMs that I've collected from Malaysia, Singapore, and Australia. I keep this in my travel wallet.
Backup AMEX: Beneath this AMEX, there are other cards like a secondary bank card and driver's license. All are kept in my travel wallet.
Bank notes: I have some loose cash in my wallet, but when I'm in Malaysia, I'm primarily cash as debit/credit isn't as popular outside of KL. I keep notes in my travel wallet.
Pacsafe travel wallet: This loops over my belt and inside my pants. It’s super secure with mesh material on the loop that can’t be easily cut by pickpocketers, but it’s inconvenient to access
Canada Passport: I don’t leave home without it just in case I make an unplanned trip to the airport. I keep it in my travel wallet, and it doubles as a separator for my cards and cash.
Android headphones: For listening to music, podcasts, or videos on my Nexus 6. I’m getting a Bose SoundTrue Ultra at the end of this week to replace this cheap Samsung.
Ben Sherman timepiece: It’s just a quartz timepiece I bought on the cheap while in Malaysia, but I like looking at my wrist to quickly check the time and date since pulling out the phone for that purpose wastes time. It might be nice to replace this with a Tag Heuer Aquaracer Chronograph, but I don’t have $2K lying around and luxury isn’t high up my priority list.
Photo #2: My current EDC when I go to work or social outings. I like having my computer repair tools for just-in-case moments when somebody wants me to fix their hardware. My DSLR essentials are for when I see something photo worthy that deserves better quality than my phone.
Column-by-column:
Pacsafe Camsafe V25: This anti-theft backpack has mesh lining all around it, including in the straps, to prevent bag cutting. Zipper pulls with clips ward off pickpocketers looking for a quick score. When traveling, I carry my MSI GS60 laptop inside, but not for EDC since it’s very wide and inconvenient to stow away.
Canon EOS 60D with 50mm f/1.8 and hood: My main DSLR, attached to a Pacsafe Carrysafe 75 GII strap, which also has the mesh lining. If I’m on a photoshoot, this is usually cross-slung on my shoulder.
Metal water bottle: For hydration.
Canon 20mm f/1.8: Spare glass for wider shots.
Canon battery charger: To charge the battery when it runs out.
Vello bounce cards: To help bounce on-camera flash when I need some extra light. I could have added a Speedlite to my EDC, but it added unnecessary weight to a situation I wouldn’t run into very often during the day.
Sandisk Extreme 32 GB SD card: My camera’s card glitched out once during a critical shoot, so I always carry a spare now.
Canon battery: Spare battery in case the camera dies, held in a small resealable bag I got from IKEA in Malaysia to meet with airline standards.
Zebra Sarasa 0.7 Blue: I love these pens. They’re inexpensive and write really smooth. I have a whole box of them at home.
Revlon nail file: Working with computer repairs means I sometimes rip or sharpen my nail by accident, and I hate it when they get snagged in my clothes or other fabric, so I keep a nail file in my bag. One side buffs and the other smooths for that days-old feel. My mom swears by this so I got one for myself too. Girls like how I’m secure in my masculinity to have such a “feminine” product, but I seriously find it practical.
Details foldable bag: My town instituted a no plastic bag by-law, so I carry a fabric bag by default in case I have to grab groceries downtown after work. This one folds in on itself, making it very portable.
Revlon nail clipper: Another “feminine care” product that I swear by. It comes with a removable plastic shell that catches all the clippings inside that’s easy to empty. It’s hecka useful, especially when I’m traveling or on-the-go.
Various USB flash drives: Part of my IT kit, I keep various bootable drives to install Windows, Linux, or OS X, with rescue and data drives for good measure. I keep them together in a Skullcandy drawstring bag that came with an old pair of around-ear cans that broke a long time ago.
Not shown:
Winchester utility knife: I keep this in my pants pocket for box or package cutting purposes. However, I can’t take it on flights with me, so that kind of sucks. I either need to buy a second one to carry in Malaysia or look at a Kubotan, tac pen, stainless steel Sharpie, etc.
Loose change: I don’t know a lot of people who keep their loose change in the tiny pockets of their jeans, but I’m one of those rare breeds.
Keys: Almost everybody has keys unless they’re homeless. Sorry if I offended any homeless people.
EDC is one of my favorite subreddits. I like seeing what people consider an everyday carry.
Some people have unbelievable items as EDC. However, instead of ridiculing them, it helps me decide what I consider to be practical EDC.
I like to be able to pick up and go at a moment’s notice. So my EDC is centered around that.
Integrating apparel from SCOTTeVEST might help me achieve freedom from bags in my EDC. I'm being particular about it, as there are many varieties and I have to consider things like climate, value, and style.
While I’m living in a dry/cold climate at the moment, I will be moving to a humid, tropical climate later this year, so wearing several layers now won’t be feasible and I’ll have to make do with something light. I have my eye on the Camp Shirt, Featherweight Vest, or Pack Jacket.
