The Vaccines Inject A&R Music Bar With British Rock
The Vaccines played a lively show at the A&R Music Bar last night. It was the London-based band’s third trip through Columbus, and the reception from the crowd showed that they have created a loyal following in Ohio’s capital. The band played a fast-paced and compact set; going through their hits and new album, while not overstaying their welcome.
The Vaccines are touring in support of their most recent album “English Graffiti,” which was released in May. The title may have been somewhat tongue-in-cheek, as “Graffiti” is their most produced and polished album to date. Unfortunately, the production leaves the album feeling somewhat sterile, and moves away from some of the originality that set the band’s early work apart from other acts. The Vaccines’ debut album, “What Did You Expect From the Vaccines?,” provided a refreshing British post-punk sound, and the song titles alone revealed that the band weren’t taking themselves too seriously with their first LP (“Wreckin’ Bar,” “Post Break-Up Sex”). “Graffiti,” however, for the most part leaves the listener wondering whether the album was intentionally made to closely mimic the most popular Arctic Monkeys songs.
A&R Music Bar, however, seemed to be a venue that allowed the band to sound like their old selves. The set included the first four tracks off of “Graffiti” early on, and the live performance better featured Freddie Cowan’s guitar, and gave the songs a much more sharp sound than on the album. The crowd’s familiarity with all the songs in the show, including those from “Graffiti,” kept the energy high for the entire performance. The band seemed genuinely impressed with the audience, and seemed to build off the energy as the show went on.
The unquestioned star of the show was singer Justin Young. Young engaged the entire crowd immediately, and his deep voice filled the bar when he let it go. Young clearly thoroughly enjoys playing his bands songs, and his emotion on stage added another layer of depth to the band’s lyrics, which are generally uncomplicated on their face. While the performance didn’t leave much down time between songs, Young did take the time to ask how the Crew were playing, and whether the fans watching from the A&R balcony had to pay as much for tickets as the people standing inside. Young’s performance certainly raised the rest of the band, and made the Vaccines a great intimate show for a Wednesday night.
A shoutout also has to be given to the local opening band, Cliffs, who put on a very energetic show, and sold one of the coolest concerts tees I have seen in a while.
